So slow it sometimes isn't worth it! On the other hand, I really like the food. I simply wish that Chipotle had built a bigger place; I wish that they trained their staff better; and I wish that they could have some control over what happens in their restaurant (this place can be more boisterous than many bars) This is my second time visiting here. The first went ok-- kind of slow, very noisy, fairly friendly staff. This time they took longer than most real restaurants, the staff was surly, and the other customers were a distraction.
ORDERING ONLINE--
Thinking I could avoid the crowds and the wait-- I ordered and paid online in advance. This DID NOT HELP AT ALL. Here's the story:
I ordered online from home. I then waited the 20 minutes for my order to be ready. I arrived at Chipotle 7 minutes after my order was promised to be ready. Not only was it not ready-- they had not even started assembling it. Strangely, the place was not busy. There were only a handful of customers in line, and yet they decided to not make my order. After I showed up and saw very few people, I thought to myself, "Hmmm, maybe I should have just come here instead of ordering online. But at least my order is already ready." Turns out I was wrong.
When I went to the register to pick up my order the "asst manager" seemed somewhat bored by my request for my online order and slowly looked around for a receipt showing what I had ordered. When he found it, he shouted out to the line staff exactly what I had ordered. They took a few more customers and then made my order while I waited-- They actually took a few other customers before making the already very late order. (At the time I didn't find this irritating because I was so bemused by this experience. Writing about it, I'm starting to think that this is another example of bad management).
Eventually the order was given to me. This actually took longer than if I had simply gone to the place and waited in line. Before leaving, I asked the manager why the order hadn't been started before I got there and why it wasn't ready at the promised time. He replied with a blank look. I then changed the question to, "Do you usually wait to make online orders until the person arrives to pick them up?" He answer was-- "sometimes." Not helpful. Moral of the story-- online ordering doesn't help much at this place and actually can cause more of a wait.
NOTE ON THE PHOTO--
The photo that Yelp uses is an accurate representation of this Chipotle. Fully accurate. That means that it is a view of basically the entire restaurant. A small drinks station is not pictured. That's it. Bottom line-- the place is REALLY SMALL!!!
A NOTE ON THEIR PRICE INCREASES FOR "EXTRA" REQUESTS--
This is a tough one. I feel their pain. A good portion of their clientele comes in an requests multiple extras of everything-- more chicken, more cheese, more guac, more salsa, etc. I've watched this happen a few times, and I've found these customers to be extremely irritating. There is no doubt that they are trying to get more food than everyone else for the same price. A number of these people-- strangely the 4-5 I've seen have all been women-- are clearly sharing these meals with a friend. Others just seem really hungry-- we'll leave it at that. Moreover, each time I've seen these requests occur, the customers also argue with the staff about having to pay for other things (like extra tortillas or ... why do chips cost money).
On the other hand, the line staff here sometimes clearly skimps on the food and you can see that the salsa that they give isn't a full spoon-full and isn't enough salsa to "cover" the burrito. In a normal situation, one would simply be able to ask for a bit more since they haven't given you the Chipotle-determined amount (i.e. a spoonful) to begin with. It would be no big deal. But it seems that this Chipotle has taken to charging some customers extra for simply asking for what they should have gotten to begin with. That is not a good business practice. Additionally, sometimes a customer may just want some extra salsa-- or two types of salsa. Is that really something that Chipotle wants/needs to put a price on? I suppose it is their business and customers can simply not come back (and tell their friends to stay away... or Yelp about it).
I'm interested in whether anyone has ideas about how Chipotle can stop the offenders (and I promise if you watch one of these people try to get their extras, you'll agree that they are offenders) and not hurt/offend others?
UPDATE--
I've been back twice times since writing this review. Why, you might ask? Because I'm a glutton for punishment? Or maybe just a glutton for Mexican food?
Well... they've gotten a bit faster. The clientele can still be very loud, and there are always lots of people, but the staff seems to have gotten slightly more used to being busy, and I've even encountered a somewhat friendly staff member. read more
