I will start off by saying I was reluctant to even go get checked out because of bad experiences with chiropractors in the past and frankly I was nervous. Dr. Helton and his staff are nothing but a blessing. After a short 2 weeks I feel significantly better. Dr. Helton is extremely skilled, knowledgable, and most importantly kind and caring. Chiropractic Healing Hands For You 4615 SE Woodstock Blvd, Portland, OR 97206 I am posting this review for prospective patients. Wish I had known! Please be warned that you will have a start time for your appointment, but the end time is open ended and could be 3 to 4 hours. I was his patient for weeks before I had an adjustment and became very frustrated by having to wait in the room while he took phone calls, Interacted with his staff and other patients. It was the most chaotic practice I've ever experienced. Sadly, not only did I not improve but on my last appointment he injured my elbow, which I later found would not improve with chiropractor adjustments because I had tennis elbow. I could not use my arm and it was very painful for three days. They do not value your time and this doctor does much more conversation than proper treatment. After several appointments with my new chiropractor (Laurel Hurst- Trolly Bldg), I am so much better with traction, heat wirh a one hour massage before my adjustment for better results. The best thing about this office is the staff and the amazing massage therapist. read more

I have been looking for this kind of care for years. Someone who looks at the whole picture of your health and lifestyle and doesn't just treat symptoms. Someone who can intelligently explain to me what they are doing and how things are connected in my body, as well as point me to studies about topics of interest. As someone with an academic background in neuroscience, lots of doctors and therapists have failed to impress me with their knowledge of the nervous system, but Dr Helton actually knows what he is talking about, keeps up on the science, and I generally learn something each visit. Best of all he has relieved pain in my lower back that I have lived with for over ten years. Also, when I injured my foot during the course of my visits with him he also successfully treated my foot injury and saved me a trip to the doctor. I truly love Dr. John and owe him so much. My husband and I had been in a car accident back in July and after several months of consistent therapy, we had been told by our physical therapists that there was no more they could do for us and that the level of healing we had achieved was the best we could hope for. We were both in pain every single day and we could hardly do any of the normal activities we used to enjoy, which made no sense to us. In fact, I had painted my bedroom and ended up in so much pain, I was stuck on the floor for two days straight....and I'm a personal trainer!!! We were both fed up with always being in pain and after the bedroom painting incident, we called Dr.John. I have to be honest and say that I traditionally do not like or trust chiropractors. I have had a couple of bad experiences to bring me to that conclusion. But when I did research to find a practitioner of a particular kind of body work, Dr. John came up. In fact, he has a long, long list of modalities he has studied over the years...and that really spoke to me. That showed me that he is the type of person to always continue learning new things, and there is no greater sign of wisdom to me than to be a perpetual student. Dr. John started my husband and I with an incredibly thorough and lengthy round of testing. He ordered x-rays...even our doctors didn't do that. He took the time to get a true understanding of where our bodies were in the present and where they were in the past. He has a massage therapist who works alongside him in the office and he immediately prescribed soft tissue work for the both of us. The massage therapist is truly terrific...I cannot say enough wonderful things about how caring she is with what she does. She is truly a healer and I never truly realized the importance of consistent soft tissue work until I started seeing her regularly. Within the first two visits to Dr. John and the massage therapist, I was already feeling relief. We have been going for over a month now and even though there is still a ways to go with my healing, I am able to do more things and sleep comfortably and I feel like myself again. I love Dr. John. I first came to see him in 1996 and I was in such pain I was crying. It hurt so bad in my neck,back and hip area. The regular doctors just prescribed pain pills and muscle relaxers,but I was still in pain. I had seen a few chiropractors before and none could help me. I was desperate . People in his office seeing him told me not to worry, that I would get fixed up. I thought to myself, yeah right , but gave it a go anyway. Within a couple of days the pain was better. My doctors were surprised when I told them I was out of pain. Throughout the years my hip rotates out of the socket causing me alot of pain. He is the only doctor that can fix it. This guy is amazing I heard about him from other friends and I came from Chicago to see him. Spent about 4 hours he explained everything and I've felt great ever since. I was only in town for a day and he came in on his day off to see me. It's been about two months since I've seen him and feels as if it were yesterday. I had an excellent visit with Dr. Helton. I stumbled upon this place on a trip to Portland as my Airbnb was located in the same area. Let me start by saying that this was on my second adjustment ever. That being said, I received much more than that. The doctor took his time with me and we ran a series of test with really cool state-of-the-art equipment. I learned a ton and felt very well taken care of. I came back in for another adjustment before leaving town and let me say, I felt incredible. My pain had diminished greatly and the effects were lasting. After a month of appointments, I know now the doc's philosophy is his way or the highway. I told him from the beginning that I have anxiety, am highly sensitive, and a dash of PTSD from lots of stress at home. He barely listened to me at the first appointment (evaluation) and it showed four weeks later (as I kept explaining to him, he finally asked questions at the last appointment). I went to them for help with headaches, which were actually migraines, but I did not learn anything about treating migraines from him. My migraines got worse while I was seeing him (from one month frequency to weekly while I was attending multiple appointments here per week). Manual adjustments at this place upped my anxiety, and the mechanical adjustments were better, but still caused mild panic. The things I asked for from the start (massage and recommendations for a pillow) were not given to me, although I was able to push my way into massage a few times and that was a great benefit! Alisa, the admin person is wonderful, but the doc is stuck in his old ways that did not work for me. read more

I have nothing but admiration and respect for John Helton. He helped me through a rough period after being injured on the job. I was in terrible pain and could hardly move without spasms up my spine and neck, my range of motion drastically diminished. Dr Helton has access to high tech equipment which can more accurately indicate problem areas, inflammation, as well as periodic improvement. In the past, I have had medical x-rays taken by M.D. orthopedic specialists which did not provide enough musculoskeletal detail. After several sessions (over a couple months) of adjustments, massage and laser treatments, I feel confident Dr. Helton is extremely skilled and knowledgeable in his field of expertise (significantly beyond the average chiropractor). As soon as I began treatments I experienced immediate relief and am gradually feeling better. His staff are also wonderfully compassionate and a great asset to his high quality chiropractic care. If you believe in metaphysics, cosmic energy, woo...maybe this is the right place for you. But unfortunately, my experience was not great. While Dr Helton is a nice man and possibly feels that he's doing his best, he just came off as extremely pushy to me. Trying to get me to pay $500 for these supplements that he couldn't even really explain (did this strange experiment where he'd have me hold my arm out, and he'd have me resist against his push, then would bring a supplement bottle close to my chest, and push my arm way harder and insist I had just gotten weaker, meaning my body needed that supplement). I tried to tell him multiple times that that was way out of my my budget (I'm a 22 year old working at a pizza shop living paycheck to paycheck) and the appointments alone we're $60 each. I expressed that I was getting a promotion/pay raise in the future and could maybe afford it then to try to hold him off for a while, but every time I came back after he'd ask if I'd gotten that pay raise yet. It was a very uncomfortable experience and he seemed to get defensive and rude when I'd tell him a certain adjustment he made didn't make a difference. All in all, this place felt very cult-y, like I was being brainwashed. The receptionist, Cassie is lovely. Like I said, Dr Helton seems to be a kind man and I respect eastern medicine and healing energies to an extent, but not in this pushy context. read more

Everything about this place is incredible! I looked up "Chiropractors near me" and, luckily, this office was only a short bus ride away. I started looking for a chiropractor because of my constant back pain and headaches and had heard that it would be a good option for me from my family and friends. Brendan the secretary is the nicest person I think I have ever met! She is so ridiculously sweet and helpful and makes my day as soon as I walk in the door. And that is saying a lot, because the readjustments have me leaving feeling like I'm floating on a cloud. Dr. Helton has helped me so so so so so much--he even stayed with me past office hours to finish my initial appointment, and had me crying after my first adjustment because of how wonderful I felt. I'm eternally grateful for the referral to Dr. John. I'd lived with chronic pain for almost 20 years and thought that's just they way it was. In fact I had an appointment to see a neurologist for a nerve conduction test the week before going into see him. After his review and 2 treatments the medical problem was on it's way to being resolved. Dr. John has changed my life. I feel younger now at 60 than I did at 40. I don't wake up with swollen hands, I can sleep in any position. I'm more limber and relaxed in my body in general. It was worth the commitment to treatment.
