Having arthroscopic knee surgery a couple of months after that ordeal opens a whole vortex of suckage. Carolyn Alter, PT helped me get from a percocet-addled, two week post op basket case on crutches to the high heel wearing, ass-kicking goddess I am now. Well, maybe not goddess but I'm on my way. For six weeks after the first surgery I was on strict orders not to put any weight on my leg. Not even a teeny, tiny bit. I went to Carolyn three times a week and she slowly got me doing exercises to try and improve my muscle tone and flexibility. It is frightening how quickly your muscles atrophy after surgery. My left leg looked like the Incredible Hulk compared to the shrunken little twig on the right. After that six weeks of hell, I was sentenced to six MORE weeks on crutches but allowed to be 50% weight bearing. We upped the types of exercise and soon I was seeing marked improvement. As with all PT, you really have to stick to a plan, including doing exercises on your own. Carolyn explained and demonstrated everything I needed to do at home. Some days were full on hour+ workout, some days were massage and ultrasound treatments. It really depended on how my leg decided how to behave that day. That's Carolyn's true talent: sussing out what's going on with your body and encouraging you to listen to its cues. Carolyn is part coach, part therapist, part personal trainer, part cheerleader, part older sister. She knew when to push me and when to lay off. She is just generally awesome. Due to the second surgery, I ended up being in her care for eight months. I don't miss being in pain, but I really do miss seeing her a couple of times a week. Now where are my skis...

I choose Mitchell Physical Therapy because they were so close to my home, making it easy on me to drive there and, they are on my insurance plan. Brendan Thompson was my therapist and I can't say enough good things about this young man. He listened to me when it hurt really bad, came up with solutions so my pain level was tolerable and got me through each session as I needed too. There were a few times I had to cancel because the 32 staples were hurting really bad and after the removal I had some bleeding as well. The staff and Brenden understood my problem and worked with me on setting up more appointments to finish out my prescription. When I had completed my physical therapy, Brenden made sure I took home exercises to do that will help keep my knee limber and eventually bend 110%. I only got as far a 97%. I will be using Mitchell's again when I have my right knee done this year.

Definitely NOT a run of the mill type of PT Clinic, which you may get with large practices. First of all the building looks like a house and the staff makes you fee like home! Front office manager Kim was professional and helpful in getting my process started. Randy the Physical Therapist is a character! Funny and very easy to talk to put me at ease which was extremely helpful since I was in so much pain. His wife and assistant Michelle was also very tender and easygoing. This mom and pop shop so to speak was actually a breath of fresh air from all of the sterile feeling clinical doctors offices I went to. Appointment times are staggered so that you really feel as if you are their only patient. They ask you to set aside an hour and a half for them and they spend the entire time with you, listening to everything you say (this is unheard of in a great way!) I felt that the exercises and therapy services were excellent and really sped my healing process. Although a jovial man, Randy is also all business and knows his stuff, and I felt as if I was in very capable and knowledgeable hands. The office was very, very clean and I felt even though being alone with either of them at times in the office, they were always appropriate and completely professional. Their large standard poodle even met me at the door one day! Talk about a family atmosphere! It really makes me think about how wonderful the days must have been when doctors made house calls. Somehow the environment of a home feel really does make you feel much less anxious about being treated, and you feel more like an instant friend and not just a patient. You can reach them by phone any time you call, you can be seen if you just drop in with a question, always available for your needs. They also worked with my insurance and were VERY generous when I had some financial difficulty. I am still so amazed at my experience. My trainer referred me to Nick's office. After two visits with Nick, the pain was reduced. A few visits later and we had avoided a frozen shoulder and surgery. Three months later and I'm virtually pain-free, my range of motion is at 99%, and I'm recovering my pre-accident strength. The entire staff is friendly and professional and both the PTs are experts! I would highly recommend Nick Rinard PT.

I had persistent low back pain after being rear-ended by a careless driver while stopped in…read morebumper-to-bumper city traffic. After seeing another physical therapist frequently for a solid six months with little improvement, that practitioner basically gave up on me and suggested I see either a physiatrist or a go to a pain clinic. That's when a colleague recommended I see Lee O'Connor at Synergy Spine Therapy. Thank goodness she mentioned him. What I like about Lee is that he is a scientist at heart. He practices a philosophy called the McKenzie Method. Essentially, each visit he put me through a torture scheme (he called it an "algorithm," but I know better). He systematically tested what made me improve and what made me worse at every appointment, using the same assessment each time. While I sometimes left my twice-weekly visits with him "flared up," overall, I made immediate, positive progress, after being stalled for six months. As I told Lee, "It's a good thing I trust you so much, because otherwise I wouldn't allow you to torment me like this." As part of gathering background information, Lee guessed, "I'll bet your last PT gave you about 30 exercises over the course of your work with them, right?" True! He remarked that this occurs frequently when PTs have a patient that confounds them - they throw many exercises at them to see if, by chance, one of them works. He also inquired whether my other PT had me work on strengthening exercises, and again the answer was yes. He said this was another common "go to" for PTs who were out of ideas. He definitely thinks there is a place for strengthening, but that typically is most effective AFTER the main complaint has improved or resolved. I love the fact that Lee gave me one or, at most, two exercises to do at home. Bonus: he hand draws the exercise instructions for you with adorable, smiling stick figures. Lee has a great sense of humor and is entertaining to chat with as an extra plus. I would recommend him even if he were the crankiest, grumpiest PT in the world, though, because he is a master of his profession. He zeroed in on what my issue was in two visits and I then started improving rapidly. He predicted that the characteristics of my back problem would change somewhat after we starting addressing the problem correctly, and - right on schedule - this occurred as he foresaw. He mentioned that flare ups and setbacks are a part of the journey. When that happened to me because I overdid yard work one weekend, he helped me quickly get back to my new, less painful baseline. Lee's whole goal is to teach you how to correct course yourself when you have issues arise so that you can stop seeing him. He actually wants his patients to graduate and not come back. Boy, is that unusual and refreshing in a PT! Lee taught me what he calls "rescue exercises" for when I have a flare up. I still have some back issues but - thanks to Lee - I have the tools to make them better more quickly. If you have what seems like incurable back problems, do yourself a favor and make an appointment with Lee. If everyone else has given up on your back getting better and/or you yourself have given up, take heart and have hope. I believe that if anyone can help you, Lee can. I've never written a review for any provider, but I felt moved to pen this one because I know it has the potential to help people who are in a dark, hopeless place find their best chance at getting better by seeing Lee.

Several years ago, I was in a car accident and Dr. Bowman repaired two torn tendons in my left…read moreshoulder. Everything went smoothly and my recovery went very well, so when I tore a tendon in my right shoulder playing golf last spring, I returned to his office for treatment. My surgery was originally scheduled for October, but my insurance company denied the claim because there were "no doctor notes attached." The office had 30 days to resubmit the claim, but they did not do so. The surgery was then rescheduled for early March. Before the procedure, my primary care physician ordered my pre-op labs and told me the surgery needed to be completed within 30 days of the lab work. The lab staff confirmed the same information. I called and emailed Dr. Bowman's office to let them know my labs had been completed, but I did not hear back for two weeks. When they finally contacted me, the surgery date they offered was beyond the 30-day timeframe. When I questioned this, the woman I spoke with told me, "Oh, that's okay, we do surgeries up to 90 days after labs are taken." I explained that both my doctor and the lab had told me otherwise, but she insisted they were wrong. After the problems with the insurance authorization, the lack of communication, and the conflicting information regarding pre-op requirements, I decided to seek care elsewhere.
