I love having a reasonably priced, safe go-to salon within walking distance of my house! I haven't gone since early 2020, so I'm not sure if she's open during shelter-in-place. THE COST My hair has been somewhere between ear and shoulder length during my time going to Chit Ma Ma, and my cuts have cost either $35 or $40 depending on the length. BOOKINGS I usually call with about a week's notice to make an appointment. She's busy but always has space - I think I've gotten an appointment with just one day's notice for a weekday evening cut. She never takes more than 60 minutes. THE CUT She'll do whatever you want - just be descriptive and show her photos! I haven't tested her creativity to see what she comes up with on her own - I've just had a vision since I started going to her, but she's a good sounding board. FYI she can be a bit blunt ("you've lost hair since you took this photo - your hairline is further back". Yep, that's when I realized I'm a woman who's balding), but it's always comments that help you understand how your hair will fall, or why a certain cut won't really work. read more

I got my second haircut here a few days ago and it was amazing. I have very curly hair (3B). It was the longest it has probably ever been (in part due to COVID and in part due to my preference for long hair) and I asked for a cut to get rid of the damage but maintain as much length as possible. Sometimes it's hard to accept a shorter length after having really long hair for a long time, but I must say... I've never had as many compliments after a cut. And so far it's been well-behaved without much fuss (my curly hair often has a mind of its own regardless of my daily routine or what products I use). I usually have my hair straightened after a cut, but this time I decided to just go with my natural curls out the door. Angela is my regular hairdresser -- she is consistently excellent, very nice, easy to get an appointment to, and very affordable. This review is specifically because she was our make up artists and hair stylist for my wedding. This was a complicated endeavor because 1) there were 2 brides and 2) we had 6 sisters and 2 moms who also wanted their hair and make up done. Long story short, here are the highlights: 1. She handled everything like a pro and was very timely -- all 10 people had excellent hair and make up within 7 hours. 2. Her hair and make up jobs were INCREDIBLE. All of us sent pictures of what we wanted beforehand and she was able to replicated what was wanted flawlessly. She particularly adept at up-dos and I agree with the assessment that she is the "pin up" queen. 3. Her make up was particularly great -- light enough to look natural, heavy enough to appear in photographs, dolled up enough to make us look like models. People would stop by partner in the street to comment on it! 4. All of this was exceptionally affordable -- we did the price analysis and her services are much cheaper than others. 5. Angela is super sweet and really listens to what you want. My previous experiences with hair stylists included telling them I wanted 2 inches cut and they'll cut 3 inches. Not with Angela--she will follow your instructions very carefully! Sadly, I will probably not be returning. In the past 3-4 four times I called to make an appointment for a specific date/hour, she will always counter back with another time that's 30 minutes later. For ex: "Can I come in at 11 am?" - me "What about 11:30?" - Angela. It's very discouraging to have this dialogue. I would rather be told that the salon is busy at that time because that will prompt me to ask for the salon's schedule instead of having me offer my availability. I also find the way that she brushes your hair as she's cutting it to be pretty harsh. There was one time when she actually accidentally yanked off my earring while she was brushing my hair. Lastly, I think she charges customers differently. The last time I was here to get a trim, I was charged $35 instead of $25, like usual. There were two other women before me who also had a trim (similar hair length to mine) and only paid $25 (I watched them at the counter). Perhaps I was charged an extra $10 because I had mentioned to her that I was flying out in a couple of nights to visit family from out-of-town for the holidays. Perhaps she thought I could afford paying the extra $10? Regardless of her reasoning, in that same conversation, I had also mentioned the reason that my immediate family (mom + sister) no longer lived in San Francisco was because we got priced out as a family in the city. I only see my family once a year because I can only afford to fly out-of-state once a year. Now, I am very aware that I often get mistaken as a gentrifier because I'm young, I live on my own, and I work in the city. In reality, however, I'm a local and I grew up in the city. My family was unfortunately pushed out because of the increasing prices of rent and it's much cheaper to rent a room with a roommate instead of renting an entire house or even one floor of a house. As a young woman of color who is desperately trying to not get priced out of the same city that I grew up in, I did not appreciate being overcharged based on the assumption that I may be a gentrifier. Don't get me wrong. Angela is very knowledgeable about her trade. The first time I came here was probably sometime in late-2012 or mid-2013. I had surgery in 2010 that made me lose a lot of hair. When I came here for the first time, Angela noticed a lot of hair growing at the base of my skull and asked if I had surgery in the past two years and/or were taking a lot of medicines.
