She warned me that my straight, fine, virgin hair will have difficulty holding a curl after day 1, but it ALWAYS came back after a wash. I don't live in SF anymore, but I make the 1 hour trip just to go to this studio every time I need my hair done. I love Romi and I will continue going here to see her!! Compared to the other studios I've been to, they are the most consistent, honest, and detailed. I have never walked out of this studio unhappy with how my hair looked, even if it deviated a bit from what I originally wanted. In the most recent time I went, I was absolutely blown away with how my hair turned out! This review is for Yumiko. I had specifically requested her because of all the great reviews I've seen. I was going to make a huge change starting with 27 inch long hair and no bangs. I wanted to try out short hair with bangs! It was kind of a shock when I saw the final result, but I ended up really loving what she did with my hair. It felt so light afterwards! She understood what I had wanted just from a few words/photos, and even taught me how to cut/style my hair by myself if I wanted to recreate the look. I had one of the worst salon experiences here. On my way to the salon, the assistant told me they allow a 15-minute grace period. I arrived exactly at 1:15, but once I got there, both the stylist and assistant denied the policy, refused my appointment, and spoke with a rude attitude. They even argued with me for nearly 20 minutes instead of simply doing the haircut--clearly showing they don't value new customers. Such shame for a Japanese salon to represent Japanese standards of service in this wa y. Not recommended. read more

I have been visiting arty for years. Mako has been a great help to style my Asian hair and I am super happy that I found her throughout the years. I took my mom over before (she was fluent in Japanese and loved it here). I also recently took my little ones over and they both looked lovely after and very happy. Their hair stylists are both super friendly and patient. LoL I believe their pricing is fair for Japanese salons. They are very efficient, attentive and friendly. The salon is located across the street from the main Japan town plaza. It is on the second floor without elevator nor lift. The facility has been well kept over the years. In terms of the timing quote on appointment, the front desk answering the calls are often trainees at the salon and might not know the timing requirement well. It might be better to talk directly to your stylist to get an accurate timing estimate. Sometimes, language could also be an issue. But overall, I find them very accommodating and friendly. This review is for Romi. I saw her a few times for highlights and color. It's been a while, so this review is a bit late. She is skilled, but her attitude really threw me off. When I showed her some pictures of how my hair used to look, she just laughed at them in a disrespectful way. Then she made a sarcastic "wow" when she found some grey hairs--not in a nice way at all. Totally unnecessary reactions. The part that really made me uncomfortable, though, was how she treated her assistant, Sakura-san. Romi kept picking on her bleached hair, saying things like, "Look at her hair, it's so damaged," and just kept going on about it. Honestly, I thought Sakura-san's hair looked nice. Meanwhile, Romi's own hair didn't look any better, in my opinion. The whole thing felt mean and super unprofessional. Even though she's good at what she does, I won't be going back. She is always amazing and beyond my expectations! I don't usually post reviews but I have to for Mako at Arty Hair! I've been going to Mako for my regular haircuts for several years now. I never had a regular hair stylist until her. Mako always gives me a consistent hair style for my thick, wavy hair just how I like it. Luckily I was seeing her for a haircut a few weeks before my wedding at City Hall and realized I had no idea of what to do with my hair. I asked Mako if she could style my hair and all I can say is, wow. She came up with a hair style that felt true to me and it stayed in place all day. She's already a little hard to book (I'm a last-minute kind of girl) so writing this review poses the risk that she will be even harder to book but I just had to write this glowing review. It was extremely disappointing since I went out of my way to pick a very specific picture. First of all let me say my overall experience with the place was a w e s o m e! They're all so nice and attentive! I got there 20 mins late (sorry!) and Kyoto greeted me by my name with a big smile on her face. I was there for a digital perm and she recommended to have a normal perm after assessing my hair. Best decision ever! I've always had flat and really straight hair and she did wonders with it! She was honest and said it would only last about two months cause of the texture of my hair but that's ok. It doesn't feel dead and that damaged which is a plus. Also, it was 125 dlls (which I think was a great price) but that's because i have short and very little hair. Massage to die for by the other girl (didn't get her name). Will obviously come back!!! Update: been here twice and my perm still stands after a while (about 8 months). I haven't taken proper care of it in hopes of it going wavy and it did. I love it! read more

What I asked for vs what I got. The hair stylist said the look couldn't be done in one session or on Asian hair. It also took 6 hours. It looks ok but it's nothing close to what I wanted and I spent $360 on this cut+color+parking. There's no ombré, no blonde color panels, and the color is much more orange and brassy than the color I wanted. I've seen the blonde highlights on my Asian friends so I'm not sure what she was talking about. Overall pretty disappointed. read more

I asked for 4 inches off my hair and some long layers in the back and what I got was ~7 inches off my hair (I came home and measured with a measuring tape from before/after photos I had). What bothers me is that my hair dresser chopped off all the length (with very rough and inaccurate measurement of what 4 inches really looks like to her) the moment I sat down. I showed her some photos of the kind of layers I wanted and she copied the photo itself with the length of the hair being significantly shorter rather than following the direction I wanted - which was only getting 4 inches off my currently longer lower back length hair and then giving some layers. She cut 7 inches off my dry/dirty hair right off the bat and went to shampoo and wash it. I saw the length of hair on the ground and I immediately questioned if that was even 4 inches off? I can visibly tell that my hair was significantly shorter (than what I asked for) than before. I don't mind medium long length hair. It upsets me the most that the length was already gone from the beginning and what's done is done. She told me that herself. I get that hair grows back but this is definitely an unresolvable situation at this current moment since she could've cut less from the start and cut more as she went. My hair stylist was actually pleasant and also detail oriented when it came to doing layers/textures. But I know for next time if I was to get a hair cut again, it would be much better to ASK for less in the beginning and to cut more if needed while still in the chair... since I am still very unhappy about the inaccurate length she cut off because now I'm left with significantly shorter hair than what I wanted... the length is at least 2-3 inches above my chest area which is what the length would've been if she followed the instructions of 4 inches off. read more

Romi! Romi! Romi! I can't say enough good things. I had let my platinum hair grow for 13 months! 13 MONTHS! Leaving me with about 6-8 inches of dark roots. My hair was a mess and of course my difficult ass wanted to go platinum again AND then go baby pink. She told me the risks and warned me of the possible damage but I said YOLO and went with it anyways. She spent 5+ hours with me double bleach and then Pravana pink over it. I live in TX. Believe it or not, I only cut my hair when I visit SF and Beijing. Yes, I am Asian. And yes, I have special hair!! I find the average American hair stylists have no clue how to cut Asian people's hair. I got a haircut once at an American hair salon for a basic haircut that cost $80 plus tips. It was absolutely the most horrifying haircut I had ever gotten. I thought to myself "NEVER AGAIN"! I like Japanese hair stylists b/c they are known for being on top of international fashion trends and haircut techniques. When I first visited SF Japantown, I decided to get a long overdue haircut over here. I forgot to make an appointment before my trip, so I had to just try my luck. I called Japan Center Beauty Clinic first but they didn't have any openings. I then called Arty and was told I could come in the next day! I came in the following morning with my dad. The hair salon isn't very big. The stylists don't speak much English but they do wonders to your hair. My stylist was very sweet and professional. We had a great conversation while she was working on my hair. My layered haircut came out amazing, even my dad thought it was very nice. She also recommended an authentic sushi place in Japantown. My dad and I went later for lunch, it was outstanding! In sum, the haircut I got at Arty is definitely THE best I've gotten in the States so far! It's actually been a year and a half since I've gotten a haircut here but, after experimenting with other salons around my area, I must say that I was most satisfied with the cut I received at Arty. I booked an appointment with the earliest available stylist, showed her a picture of what I wanted and she did her thing. One of the things I loved about this visit was that my hair was done with scissors only. I assumed that clippers would be used on the sides but, she was able to get the look down with a series of snips. Honestly, I was a little skeptical of the final product. It may have been because it was the first time I went with this particular style but, it really grew on me as the week went on. I'm annoyed at myself for being unable to remember my stylist's name but, from what I saw, I believe that any of the staff can provide a quality haircut.
