This review is based on the mini workshop aimed at kids. I'm thinking the high average rating of this place is from the actual workshops that are not the mini one tailored to kids. The workshop advertises itself as a place to "make chocolate"; I guess I interpreted this a little too literally. The workshop consisted of literally pouring melted chocolate into molds and then adding some toppings like nuts or sprinkles to it. While this was very fun for my daughter who is a toddler, I felt ripped off for this experience. Furthermore, that you aren't even provided enough chocolate to complete your molds is a little disappointing in my opinion. Others in my group seemed to agree. The chocolate itself is very pricy, especially for the quality. It was more expensive than the pricier bars I've seen at Whole Foods. However, if you go to the botanical gardens, this chocolate is sold there but for about 25% more than what is in the shop. It also would have been nice to have had dark chocolate as an option for the experience. I think just having one type (milk chocolate) is an easy way for choco museum to improve. While our host was friendly and informative, it felt like a stretch to call this place a museum. I did learn stuff, but it seems you could only access the "museum" if you paid for a workshop. read more

Fun little shop to visit while walking on the Macelon, stopping in to just smell the fresh chocolate being made is worth the stop. There is a small museum upstairs that goes through the process of growing, harvesting, and making chocolate. This is where chocolate making classes and demos take place. On the main level you can taste a large variety of their products including bars, spreads, drinks, and other goodies. If you don't like to eat chocolate (what?!), there are other products to browse through including cosmetics, apparel, dishware, etc. The coolest thing to get here is a molinillo - a wooden tool used to make Mexican hot chocolate. That would make a unique and fun souvenir for any kitchen connoisseur. Prices are reasonable (about $5 a bar for homemade chocolate) especially given the free tastings and museum. It was enjoyable to get out of the heat, smell the chocolaty air, and explore. read more

Our group of four came here for a mole and a chocolate making class. Our host Elias was amazing! He was funny, friendly and gave us some great recommendations! We went to the local market to get some of the ingredients for our mole and that itself was a fun experience, the tortilla place we were taken to was so good we went back for more on another day. We went there for a family experience. The host Lizette was pretty bad at giving explanations. She sat there awkwardly and just told us to put the soft chocolate into the mold and said nothing --making it very weird. I informed her that the amount of chocolate I had was not enough to complete my mold, and she just said "sorry I can't give you any more. I gave all of you the same amount each so That's all you get." I asked her "What if I cannot even complete the mold?" She said, "yeah, sorry I can't give you any more" and just smiled. I thought that was weird but whatever. Later the rest of the experience was not very exciting. The chocolate itself was actually very good but the experience with the host, Lizette was not the best. She wasn't rude. She just wasn't very pleasant or social. I think that her lack of interaction with the guests makes it obvious that this is probably not the best line of profession for her. They probably picked her because she spoke the best English. read more

Delicious decadent chocolate with a cozy museum and wonderful cafe on the rooftop! Through a dozen or so compact signs, the museum walks you through the bean to bar chocolate process starting from extracting cacao beans from pods, roasting the beans, removing the husks, grinding the nibs, adding sugar and Voilà...a bar of chocolate is born! Fascinating to learn that majority of the world's chocolate is grown near the equator in Latin and South America and Africa while primarily consumed in the U.S., Western Europe, and Australia. After a quick walk-through of the museum on the 2nd floor, my hubby and I headed upstairs to the cafe. The classic Hot Chocolate and the Chocolate Tortilla made of cacao and drizzled with homemade ganache were divine! Definitely a chocolate overload, well worth it! So glad we saved our appetite all day for this. We sat outside on one of the small tables and soaked in the ocean view! As we weren't sure how the water was filtered, we avoided fresh fruits and ice - I requested to skip the strawberries on the tortilla and picked the hot coco over a frappe albeit the scorching summer heat! Glad we made those modifications and felt fine afterwards. After a delightful lunch, we sampled some of the chocolates and sauces on the main ground floor. The dark chocolate is silky smooth. We bought 2 bars of the 70% Plain Chocolate and Cinnamon Chocolate along with a bag of Cacao Tea made from the husks. The fresh Mango Dark Chocolate Truffle was delicious. Wish we had more space in our suitcase to bring back home! Looking forward to coming back and booking a truffle making or bean to bar workshop - maybe even both! This is a wonderful little place. Chocolate and related gifts on the first floor, history of chocolate and chocolate and mole making on the second floor. Our instructor, Fernanda, is knowledgeable and fun. My teen and I did the 2 hour workshop together. Sampled three different chocolate drinks we made together. Attended the bean to bar workshop last week with my daughter and two teenaged grandsons. We all had a fantastic time. Jorge, the instructor, was not only knowledgeable but also humorous! He answered questions, made us laugh, and succeeded in teaching our diverse group the ins and outs of chocolate making. I have been to PV many times, but was unaware of this gem of an excursion available, located just one block off the Malecon. A great treat for all ages. read more

This young lady named Gio was standing outside with a sign that said Free Museum and tastings. So my friend any I decided to pop in. She allowed us to sample several chocolates, covered fruit, spreads, tea and tequilas. I am not really a fan of chocolate (I know, I know, I am weird) so I wasn't that enthused. However, the items we sampled were truly amazing. I ended of buying several items. This little shop had all kinds of chocolate based goodies, including perfumes and body creams. I wish I could have bought more. Upstairs is the small little museum with pictures and some displays to show the cycle of cacao seeds to make cocoa. They offer classes but we didn't have time to take part. I would definitely come back and purchase more items. read more

The mole class was one of our top experiences from a week in Puerto Vallarta (and, maybe one of my top travel experiences ever). Our guide was fluent in English. He took us to the local markets and let us practice our Spanish. We then spent an hour making mole overlooking the beach. He was patient, funny, smart and an excellent teacher. We loved learning about Mexican culture, food and the history of Mole. At the end, we got to take jars home which made the perfect souvenir! Highly recommend taking a break from the afternoon heat at one of these classes. You'll enjoy the view of the Malecon, learn a new skill and have a great time. read more

We did the two hour class today with Elias-he was absolutely fantastic! So knowledgeable excellent English. If he didn't know an answer, he would look it up but he had studied the history of chocolate and chocolate making and he's been working at this chocolate museum for a number of years. He really made the class worthwhile as it is a bit pricey. The website is a little difficult to navigate. They say you should actually sent an email or try to call the day before to make your reservation.. everything is organic, and the class was very interesting and very worthwhile. read more

We tried the chicken mole and it was great. There are daily classes you can take where the chef will take you shopping and you make your own mole. Other classes cover chocolate making. The Choco Museo is worth a visit if you're in Puerto Vallarta. If you're looking for something different to do definitely make a reservation and try one of their chocolate making workshops. There are different workshops of varying times and cost. We took one that lasted 2 hours and made some truffles. The workshop starts with a brief history of the cocoa bean and how chocolate is made. The first floor is the store and also where you can watch them make chocolate. The second floor is where the workshops take place. There is also a small, free museum on the second floor as well as a restroom. The third floor is a cafe. The staff speaks fluent English. If you take a workshop, you get 10% off in the store. read more

Burnt Cocoa Beans! I bought 3 bags of Choco's cocoa beans and a couple of chocolate bars when I was in PV. I love cocoa beans and was excited to find them. However when I got back to the US and opened a bag I discovered that the beans were very burnt. The burnt spots carried through the outer shell and tasted as if I was eating charcoal. I emailed the company to see if I could get a replacement for my three bags and have heard nothing back. Make sure to check everything you buy from them. The bars were ok but the beans, unfortunately, were terrible. read more

Something very different to do while you're in Puerto Vallarta. The website isn't always accurate, so I do recommend calling if you want to do the chocolate making class (which I completely recommend you do!). The downstairs is a chocolate lover's dream, with everything from basic bars and pops, to chocolate BBQ sauce and more. A really excellent place to buy gifts for your friends back home (if they love chocolate!). read more

Choco Museo is a fabulous find just off the Malecon (boardwalk) in Puerto Vallarta. My teenage son and I walked in and were immediately greeted by the most friendly, and knowledgable chocolatiers ever. If you're as obsessed with chocolate as much as we are, I highly recommend putting this on your "must do" list of places to visit in PV. Deymi, aka "Professor Chocolate" took us through a quick (but really fascinating) history of cacoa plants, history, and production. The best part was donning the chefs hat and apron to make our own chocolate truffles, bars, cacoa tea, and mexican hot chocolate. Sooo much fun, and most definitely a highlight for my son and I. Deymi has so much energy, enthusiasm, and passion for her job, that it's not hard to fall in love with her, and her love for chocolate! We'll definitely be back. read more

This is a lovely gem on the water of Puerto Vallarta. Bf and I went here to get out of the sun and get ride of a margarita buzz but found a lovely little coffee shop full of coffee and chocolate. Little did I realize that this was actually a place on my list of things I wanted to see! So, this is a three story building and there is a cafe on the top floor, the choco museo on the second floor, and the shop on the bottom. The americano that I got from the guy at the top was perfect. The coffee was so smooth that we just killed time and sat there enjoying the view and the coffee for about 30 or 40 mins. I need to figure out how to get a bag of coffee from this place state side because wow. yummmmmmmmm and the chocolate! we have actually found this chocolate from somewhere in Seattle as i found out we already had a bar when we got home but I cannot figure out where we got it from. read more

This is more of a chocolate store to me than a museum. However, they do have a few tours and tastings. It's a small shop. We had a free mini tasting. The woman explained each chocolate and chocolate item such as jam. She gave us this really good tea made of chocolate husks. It was warm rich with a hint of chocolate and cinnamon. The dark chocolate tequila and coffee tequila is super good. They even have small travel size for going back in the suitcase. We had no problem storing that in our carryon back to the airport. The dark chocolate is good there. They have other products like chocolate shea butter and chocolate chapstick. I think it's worth checking out if you are by the board walk. Also some fun sculptures around the shop. read more

We stumbled into this place as we were walking along the coast. I learned so much about chocolate that was so interesting. The instructors let you be a part of the entire chocolate making process, from picking the beans and grinding them into a paste. The instructors speak English really well so I wasn't confused at all and they were so much fun. They gave my family an awesome experience. It's a great activity to do and only takes about an hour. You get to be inside and away from the humidity too, which is a nice break. Will definitely do it again on our next vacation! read more

This was the second class that we have taken at Choco Museo. Not only are the classes educational but they are lots of fun. The first time we went we took grandchildren thinking this was more for kids - we were wrong, everyone of any age will enjoy. The staff is very friendly and helpful, their English is perfect so not difficult to follow along AND you leave with lots of chocolate candies. We will do it again on our next visit!!! read more

This review is for the shop since I didn't have a chance to check out the museum upstairs. The shop itself if fairly small, but offers a lot of different type of chocolate and chocolate products. They pretty much sample all their edible offerings, so be sure to taste what they have. The chocolate tea was surprisingly delicious. I ended up purchasing that as well as their spiced pecan chocolates. So yummy. Their truffles are very affordable compared to what you'd pay in the states, so be sure to grab a few of those too. I do regret not grabbing any of their hot chocolate, I'm sure it would have been amazing. read more
