A nice café overall -- I would give it 4 stars. The breakfast was good, the place was clean and well maintained, and the staff was very polite, friendly, and helpful. The only thing that could be improved is the coffee, especially the cappuccino. They kindly remade it twice, but unfortunately the taste still wasn't very good. One of two places I saw where you could grab something to eat and a drink. Not anything amazing but I enjoyed the bagel I ordered. I thought about getting a drink but the idea of having to use the airplane bathroom even once overwhelmed me so I decided drinking something that would make me go more was out of the question. Staff were friendly and the area was clean. They are also conveniently connected to the other restaurant in the airport, Bar Fly. Some of the treats were, in my opinion, overpriced. I decided to just stick with a bagel with cream cheese instead of some chocolate to store in my bag simply because of the price. Overall I wouldn't avoid them if I truly needed to eat but if I could get away with not eating until I'm at my destination I might just chance it. Airport food, even for a regional/national chain that typically has the same offerings everywhere, are rarely top tier. read more

This is a nice place inside the South Bend Airport Terminal to get a meal before your flight. This location is mostly a diner - café, but is associated with the South Bend Chocolate Factory and their regiinal chain of stores - Cafés. You order and pay at the counter. They have burgers, soups, sandwiches, salads, wings, etc. I got the BLT on sourdough bread, and it was great, a well-made, generous sandwich served with a locally made bag of chips. There's a bar that shares the space, if you want a drink other than the usual soft drinks. BTW, they do sell a few chocolates, as well as some other baked goodies, etc. They had reasonable prices, higher than a fast food chain but lower than most airport restaurants. read more

Ordered a Turkey Club. It was very greasy and soaked thru the sourdough. The guy behind me ordered the same but he didn't want tomato so I didn't get tomato either. My wife ordered the Chicken Bacon Ranch. Chicken was a little tough and greasy. I felt like I needed to wash my hands with Dawn after eating half of the "club". The other half was thrown away. Service was slow and seemed very apathetic toward her job. I can see why the other Studebagels location was permanently closed. SBN, you can do better. read more

My mistake. I bought 2 things - chocolate cherries labeled $16 and a $6 latte. In a hurry (they were slow), I didn't look at the total. I felt like the salesperson gave me a smirk but I didn't know why. I realized why when I was charged $31 when I should have been charged $22. I'll take it to my credit card company to refute. Also the cherries said best by 10/17 and were purchased on 10/27. I shouldn't have bought it and they shouldn't be out. My mistake. Buyer beware. read more

This cafe is actually attached to the Bar-Fly. And is the only spot that you can stop to get food in the south bend international airport single terminal. The food is below average but will satiate you until you get to Chicago or wherever you are going. The service is also below average, but that is expected here in SBIA. There simply isn't enough flow to offer experience to the attending crews. Of course, it's an airport shoppe, so you can get your newspaper with your chocolate bunny if you want, but the seating is only in the limited capacity at Bar Fly next door or the terminal seats. Not a lot of options, but the lighting in the terminal is nice and since it's a quiet airport, lots of seats are available. When in doubt, eat chocolate then walk it off with 4 laps around the terminal (1 mile) read more

There are a few really great things that I took away from Chocolate Cafe in South Bend airport a few weeks ago. Starting with my perfectly soft and toasted Sesame Bagel and cream cheese to the Ginger Ale over ice that saved my queasy tummy. Thanks to the oh-so-kind waitress/bartender Brittany, who was very busy tending to the line of customers, went out of her way to pour it for me from the bar tap. She easily could have said I am out of luck and offer I choose a quicker 7-up/Sprite option. And wait, it gets even better than this. An hour and a half later we landed in Minneapolis for a connecting flight. I noticed that my new Apple Watch slipped off my wrist unknowingly. I pinged it and sure enough it was Brittany who called me right away! Another kind person turned it in to her. Rather than turning it into airport lost and found she offered to ship it to me personally. I asked it if was her that poured me that Ginger Ale and she remembered who I was. I thanked her a hundred times and begged her to allow me to reimburse her via Venmo. She refused and simply asked me to write a nice review instead. You've got it Brittany! It is not as common anymore to experience a good deed from a someone you don't know so God led me in there that day. Other positive info worth mentioning is our kids loved the salted gourmet chocolates we bought there, and the cafe itself is extremely clean and well lit. The rest of the food menu looked fantastic. As an airline crew member, I've visited this location multiple times. I recommend you pass on stopping here on your way in or out of South Bend. Somehow they make espresso taste like hot water, and their drip coffee does not taste at all like coffee. I'd compare it more to a hot coke tasting beverage. It's just not good. Half of the time you go, the staff is not interested in helping you or even talking to you. Before I decided to stop visiting, I regularly had to get someone's attention after standing at the ordering station for several minutes. read more

The restaurant formerly known as Café SBN has been re-branded and is now known as Bar Fly, Studebagels, and The Pop Stop (pre-security), or South Bend Chocolate Café and Bar Fly (post-security). Two branches of the same little diner, sandwich shop, and bagel spot can be found inside the airport. One is before you go through TSA Security, and that's where your guests can meet you as you wait on your baggage. The second location is inside the main terminal after you go through Security and walk towards your gate. The menu at both places is nearly the same, and it's about the only place where you can grab a sandwich, soup, or a wrap, along with a soft drink, beer, or mixed drink inside the airport. Apparently South Bend Chocolates are a local sweet delicacy, and the ladies at the counter were handing out free samples of candy while you waited for them to make your sandwich. I was there at lunchtime, waiting on a flight out, so I just ordered a bread bowl filled with their homemade chicken & dumplings & fresh veggies soup. Plenty of seating, lots of charging stations, and the gift shop was right next door with all of your Notre Dame gift souvenirs. read more

The Chocolate Company / Bar Fly I have had positive and negative experiences here yet after an issue with a order I have to rate this place as 1 star. During my recent visit I placed a take out order. The person in front of me took what they thought was their order and left. They came back a few minutes later saying that they had the wrong order with the container half open. The grill attendant figured out they he had took my order and asked me to take it. I refused it as it had been gone for to long and I nicely asked for a new order. She refused and asked why I could not take the original one. In order to not make a scene I decided to say that I will just take a refund. She told her manager that "I wanted a refund because I did not want my food" without mentioning the order mixup. The manager did help me get my refund once she understood the situation. It is a shame that there are no other options at South Bend Airport after security. The food quality is decent but I will not return after this service incident. read more

I flew out of South Bend a bunch of times but only took the opportunity to eat here once. It's not your typical airport place, but that's not necessarily a good thing. The service is spotty, but the experience of actually sitting down and eating in a strange small-restaurantesque establishment in the middle of small-town airport makes up for that. Oh, and the neon sign is sad and exhilarating and memorable. read more
