Nice little cafe within walking distance of my hotel. Plenty of seating and welcoming decor. Service was great, very friendly and helpful. We came in during happy hour which is buy one get one free drinks - and you can mix! So I got a soft drink with my meal and a smoothie to go! The po boy was really tasty. The shrimp was fried just right and the sauce gave the meal a nice touch. I was kinda bummed with the beignets, they were a little over cooked and the dough was very bland. I really wanted to like the banana split milk too. I have been going crazy looking for a good banana milk somewhere. Staff behind the ordering counter were friendly and patient, as we have never been to Chicory before. I had the Cobb salad (no bacon, no tomato) and my daughter had the Cobb as well. The Mac and cheese and other hot dishes sounded and looked great, but we were so hot from being outside all day. The Chicory is definitely a cafe-style and not an actual restaurant. You order at the counter and bring a table sign with you for your food to be brought out. The winner of this meal were the beignets. Hot, fresh, soft, puffy, perfect beignets. Came here as it is a family favorite. Service was friendly. Getting your food was a challenge. We ate in rotations as the food came out. I tried to order the chicken creole. I don't eat pork so that wasn't an option as it is already mixed with the chicken. I settled for the shrimp po boy which was ridiculously salty. Everyone else liked it. I tried again and got the caprese grilled cheese. Yum. My son ate half of it because his food never came out. The oven wasn't working so they refunded our money. We tried to get him a smoothie and the blender was broken. Lol. Third try and he got the Mac and cheese. He had to wait an additional 8 minutes but the dish was hot and yummy. Service was friendly. I just went in to get a white mocha. The drink was given to me way too hot and it burned my tongue, the boy that took my order had a burger in his nose and not his ring, I asked her to remake my drink and asked if she knew the temp? There is a temp you are not to go over as for many reasons when serving coffee, I also watched the boy make a shaken cold coffee for the woman behind me. The drink was shaken with a towel over the shaker instead of the steel top. That unfortunately says insanitary all over it. I used to help run coffee places. I am hoping the espresso is atleast timed between 21-24 seconds for best performance and taste! This was a great place to come and I havent been here in some time... unfortunately it needs some TLC and overlooking by someone in charge! read more

Super friendly staff and very welcoming to two out of towners who stumbled in 15 minutes before close! Fish Po Boy was on point, crispy fried fish that was tender and so good. This is such a cool cafe downtown! I love the New Orleans theme and their location across from Studebaker Plaza is nice in the summertime to get food to go and enjoy live music across the street. We all enjoyed the turkey club and especially liked the honey mustard sauce on the sandwich. Of course we tried their beignets and loved every sweet, warm bite. They have a stage area for live music and a bar that serves adult beverages. The coffee menu is a whole other huge menu behind the food menu. I'm looking forward to coming back! read more

I was hungry for some beignets- haven't had any since a visit to New Orleans a few years ago and they were quite good! Today was my second time at Chicory and it's still AWESOME! Last time I got their Seasonal - Sugar and Spice Latte and this time I got the Christmas Cookie Latte! I did get both latte's "half sweet" as my coworker suggested to me that they are super sweet. Both latte's were amazing and this is definitely a go to as it's located right downtown South Bend! Now onto the food, I got the havarti and bacon jam egg sandwich. The bacon jam was delicious, and the egg was so fluffy. One of my daughters got the chicken bacon ranch flatbread, and omg it was mouth watering good. My youngest got the traditional baked macaroni, which did not disappoint. This is my first time checking out chicory cafe and my it's delicious. I got a bowl of jambalaya and an order of beignets. The only unfortunate thing was I didn't get cornbread with my jambalaya so I was a bit disappointed. I had already left before I realized there was no cornbread. Besides that, the food was tasty and piping hot! Update: * don't get the rose lavender tea latte (I think that's what it's called). I got a medium iced one so that it wouldn't be over $5 and I was almost charged like 1.50 more than what was stated on the menu price. I asked why it was so much and she was like oh it rings up like that ... but then I pointed out the board so she had to try to manually fix the price since it seems like it's just charging all lattes as over $5 before tax. The cashiers always seem to be new or something cause I've gone a few times and they are always fighting with the cash register. Oh yeah, don't order this, they didn't steep it long enough so I basically had a faint taste of rose. Plus, it was 80% milk and barely any ice. The Downtown South Bend restaurant options--at least for places that serve any meal other than breakfast--used to be pretty limited. They still may be. As evidence of this, my dad and I had some (rare) alone time on one of our football-weekend visits to South Bend. We needed to eat lunch because we were going to meet up with our friends and wouldn't be eating dinner till much later. He wanted to try something downtown, and I told him that other than Jersey Mike's I didn't know what he would like there. (He has really fond memories of moving me to South Bend in 2001, and for some reason, he associates that one block with the South Bend Chocolate Cafe and the former College Football Hall of Fame and Le Peep as the place to be downtown.) We drove around looking for something that looked interesting, and after parking near a casual place that appeared to be open but was actually closed--on a Saturday before a football game? why?--I spied Chicory Cafe and tried their door. And behold, it was open! The place really is impressive spatially; I'll give them that. There are different rooms, and people are really busy, not just the workers, but the customers as well--waiting in line, waiting for orders, asking for things, rushing to snag empty seats, etc. It's a happening-feeling place. The line does take a long time, but they seemed understaffed that day, so maybe it's not always a problem. Once we did order our food, it came out pretty quickly, although there were still so many people just sitting around chatting long after having finished their meals that my dad had to play the age card and shame someone into getting up and leaving--he absolutely hates doing this, but I'm glad he did, because if he hadn't, we would have had to eat standing up. The food is OK. There were three or four things that definitely looked good to me, and that's a rarity for me, especially in the Midwest, because I'm vegetarian. I don't remember what I ended up getting, but I definitely want to return to try other things (I'll remember once I see the menu in person.) My dad wasn't impressed with his sandwich, but he said the coffee was particularly good. This probably should only be a three-star review, but Chicory Cafe is trying really hard, and I want more small businesses like this to survive in Downtown South Bend. read more

I ordered an iced French Quarter Carmel Latte with oatmilk. Perfect balance of sweet and amazing espresso. I ordered the Cubano Sandwich. It was hot and crispy. Every bite was full of flavor. The environment was active and welcoming with lots of seating. The touches of NOLA decor makes you envision you're in Louisiana. The staff was friendly and sincere. Just passing through this morning on our way to Minneapolis and thought we'd try this cute New Orleans style cafe. It's spacious, clean, and has sweet staff. The menu is expansive but we kept it simple. My fiancé ordered the chicory roast coffee which he found to be good. The egg and cheese po'boy is just a hoagie roll with egg and a slice of cheddar cheese. Nothing special but if you want something simple and predictable, that's the move you should make. I had the full order of biscuits and gravy. The gravy is andouille-based and is absolutely delicious. I'm glad I ordered the full size because my fiancée ate some of it too!
