Hospitality is a large part of the food service industry. I understand it's busy, perhaps there was a staff meeting that went south as we got there at opening. However, a welcoming hello or acknowledgement of a "good morning" is necessary if you want to retain business. I said something like thanks for working today, those donuts like really nice, to three different people, one of them the owner with zero response. I expect it from the post office, but not when buying overpriced overhyped donuts. The chocolate croissant had almost no chocolate in it. The other donuts were ok, coffee cake bland, spent $100. My partner and I stopped in here during our vacation, and LOVED it! The quality of the coffee as well as the pastries. And of course - gluten free options which were delicious AND seasonal (gluten free pumpkin chocolate chip during the fall)!!! The line was incredibly long to get in - but worth it. However, when there's a line out the door, employees need to be acting like there's a sense of urgency... and not like we love being in line watching them goof off behind the counter. So good I went twice on my 2.5 day trip to New Buffalo. I got a donut, quiche, and cold brew the first day and just a donut the second day. Everything was delicious. Go early to get a better selection, as pickings were slim the first day (a Thursday) when I got there around 11:30am. Also expect to wait in a line - Friday morning around 9am I waited for 25ish minutes. Staff is friendly and efficient. There are a few tables inside but I ate my stuff outside. They have a big selection of donuts, muffins, cookies/brownies, quiches, cakes, and more (including a gf / vegan pastry option). I stayed in New Buffalo for the weekend and ventured out to find breakfast in town each morning. I am so happy I found Black Currant Bakehouse! Their bakery offerings were delicious and I visited all three mornings that I was in the area. Their menu was large and had variety, so I believed I tried something new each morning. I loved their fall menu and their donuts! The flavors were very unique and delicious! I live in Chicago and brought an Apple Butter Danish back for a friend that was visiting. The service was great and I told the owner how much I enjoyed his bakery. It was also decorated for Halloween when I was visiting, so I loved how festive it was. I love the donuts here so much, better than any other place in the area. The texture is so amazing, soft and pillowy. Like the chewy texture of mochi donuts, if you are into that. The little brownies are fudgy, very good. I liked the wedding cake latte. As someone who loves sugar, the apricot filling in the jelly donut was veryyy sweet. The quality of the pastries and coffee are top notch. We wandered in, on our way to another business. The room was bright and refreshing. Big windows allowed a ton of natural sunlight in, warming the room perfectly. The choices of pastries were endless. Unique flavor combinations and classics were all very tasty. The young lady behind the counter assisting us was very sweet. She had a big smile and a positive attitude. I'm sure she is used to people oooh-ing and ahh-ing all over the pretty pastry case. The coffee creations took a while. I guess it takes time to prepare perfection. Our beverages were rich and smooth. Delicious! I wish there were a place this good anywhere near me in Chicago. The East-West Reuben is perfection. The donuts are fresh. I ate more than I needed to because the food was so good. (FWIW my personal preference is for most sweet baked goods to have half the sugar they usually do, so I found it all overly sweet, but it was still excellent and probably a normal level of sugar for around here.) We went on Sunday in November at 1:30. Almost no one there and not a huge selection of baked goods, but it was a great experience. read more

We decided to try the Lemon Cornmeal Cookie and the Sprinkle Sugar Cookie. They were both AMAZING!! Some of the BEST bakery cookies we've ever had. Good taste and texture! Second time here and it gets better and better! Black Currant Bake House is a quaint little coffe, tea and pasty shop, with some tasty goodies. My go to is the Chai Tea, which they seem to make perfectly! In addition the I love their cinnamon rolls and I decided to pick up 2 vanilla sprinkle donuts! On their menu you're able to get scones, muffins, bagels, sandwiches and much more! The best part of coming here imo is the staff are truly great. They're laughing, smiling and will start a conversation with you. They truly seem happy to be working here and it shows. You'll be lucky if you get half a smile at Starbucks. They're tons of items I'd like to try on my next go round the next time I'm in the area as I hope this place keeps doing what they're doing! read more

Wow! This place is soooo good! We stopped in here while on vacation and there was a line outside the door before it opened. Once the shop opened, the line moved fast. The employees were kind and efficient. The shop itself was really cute and had a modern, artsy coffeehouse vibe. I don't know how often it happens but there was also a mini farmers market happening with fresh, delicious looking produce and more. Now on to the food...wow! We got a good variety of pastries. My favorite was their coffee cake, yum! We also loved the chocolate, vanilla, and caramel coldbrew donuts. And the cinnamon rolls were incredible! This bakery is seriously amazing!! Everything over here is just fantastic, so much so that we went back the next day! The banana chocolate chip muffin is just the right amount of sweet and fluffy, and studded with tons of chocolate chips. The death by chocolate cookie is one of the most decadent cookies you'll ever have if you're a chocolate lover. The fudge brownie and turtle brownie and fudgy and soft and chewy and delicious at the same time. The donut (chocolate cream filled) was an absolute delight. But let's not forget the savory pastries! The quiches are definitely one of the best quiches I (and my quiche disliking husband) have ever had. Fluffy eggs mixed with veggies housed in a delicious puff pastry. Seriously the best. If you love doughnuts and/or are vegan/vegetarian, you will love Black Currant! (Sound contradictory, but read on) So, I was lucky enough to be vacationing within a 9 minute walk of this place. It's in a micro downtown-ish area right off Red Arrow Highway, which can be seen as sort of the main drag of west Michigan shoreline. A local told us to go early to avoid the lines, as in, within the first hour of opening, or expect to stand outside. Well, we arrived a minute or two before the doors opened, and there was a line..already. We were about 3rd or 4th in line of the 6-8 people gathered early...makes you nervous, but it was worth it! Now, given Lea's (the local shop girl) advice, I studied their website the night before, so I'd be prepared and not hold up the line. Well, my well-intentioned plans we a bit of a bust, as I planned on ordering a filled doughnut to try, and upon ordering, they were not out of the oven yet. :( However, the black current glazed doughnut was simply divine. Well balanced flavors, light and fluffy. Truly carbs worth eating! I might include that in the last meal it was so good, and I don't consider myself a doughnut person! My spouse was happy with his choice of cinnamon, and he can be particular. :) Far exceeds any fast food or mainstream place! Wish I could walk there again tomorrow! Also tried a cupcake, it was decent, but I've had better. The doughnuts are where it's at! Also had a selection of coffee cakes, cookies, and the like. In my research, I thought maybe we could grab a breakfast sandwich here as well...but beware they are all vegetarian and vegan choices! I'm from the Chicagoland area where we have a ton of great bakeries but this bakery is the best one I've ever been to (and I used to work at one!) Our AirBnB was right next to this bakery and I went every single day on my long weekend trip and tried different things everyday. The mushroom quiche was amazing, donuts ate so fluffy and rich, and the crumble bars are outstanding. My favorite thing I had from this bakery was the cream cheese and fruit danish.
