This was my second visit and I decided I really needed to rereview it! My first visit was during Covid. They were open but I think items were limited at the time and we were still masked up. My experience then was less than stellar but honestly, I think we were all still on edge. For this visit, we stopped in before heading home to pick up some pastries for a light breakfast. It was around 10 am and it was bustling. Clearly it is a popular spot but the line moved fast. We ordered ham and cheese croissants, an almond croissant, cinnamon roll with raisins (you can get them without as well) and an apricot pocket. Everything we tried was delicious and I mean DELICIOUS. The pastries were buttery and flaky and I am craving another almond croissant as I write this, lol. We didn't want to order any hot food since we were about to hit the road but they also sell breakfast sandwiches and burritos and it smelled heavenly in there. It is a little cramped with a few small tables but there is also a patio with a kind of wild garden which was very charming. Stopped by to try some of the cupcakes, as they're on the preferred vendor list at the wedding venue we've been scoping out. Got the chiffon marionberry and lemon curd at almost a whopping $5 a cupcake. The whole cakes in the display case looked nice, but the cupcakes sure did not. I was hesitant when I saw their raggedy appearance (I photographed the best side!), but was hopeful the taste would blow it out of the water so much I wouldn't care what it looked like. So, both cupcakes were light, but dry...the marionberry moreso than the lemon curd. The marionberry also had buttercream, which we both don't care for, which of course, is a personal preference. Ok this time I bought marionberry puff, tomato pastor croissant, ham & cheese croissant, dark berry cakes and pecan pinwheel cookie. The marionberry puff was a feast for my stomach after being a feast for my eyes... The pecan pinwheel cookie's chocolate puff is made out of all your hopes and desires.. The gf likes pesto, and it was good. But surprisingly the basic ham & cheese croissant is as good as you would expect without fail.. The Buttery is a cute bakery and cafe. Unfortunately, we had just finished a late lunch and decided to get a dessert or something and this place popped up so we decided to check it out. They had a busy day so the selection was sparse. The service was very friendly and thoughtful. She was patient and recommended some of her favorite cupcake flavors. We ended up getting a slice of carrot cake, and a couple of cookies (snowball & peanut butter). The carrot cake was moist, though the icing seemed to be butter cream and not the usual cream cheese frosting. It was still good and I'd get it again. The snowball cookie was good. The PB cookie was firmer than I liked. But it had crunchy peanuts in it and a good flavor. They have indoor seating and a lot of picnic tables outside surrounded by flowers and other plants. I was introduced to this place by my former manager. Whenever I'm in the area I have to make a pit stop here. Service is quick, there are multiple cashiers. The place can get pretty packed. There is a decent sized dine in area. Don't expect nice decore or instagram-able ambiance, you're there for the food and that's all that matters. If you want to make sure all the flavors are available, I'd suggest going earlier if it's a weekend. The price is average and reasonable. One of THE BEST carrot cake cupcakes! And I honestly could not care less about carrot cake flavor, but this one blew my mind. Oh my gosh my mouth is watering just thinking about it lol. My husband and I tried their tiramisu and some other cupcake options and all are literally SO good. The dangerous part is they're not too sweet (best Asian dessert compliment btw lol). The staff were so friendly and it was based on their recommendations that we tried the the carrot cupcake, one of the chocolate cupcakes (there were a couple, but can't remember the one we tried) and this sugary cookie with pecans. I tried the sugar cookie on the way home and it took all my rationalization that I would come back when I am in Santa Cruz not to make a u-turn to get another! This is not a bad review of taste of bakery items but rather labeling for nuts. They do a poor job of labeling for nut allergies. Some items labeled and others not. It makes it confusing. Creamy, well seasoned, had bits of bacon inside, it was clam chowder done right. Their menu has it only on the breakfast side so if you get there close to the time limit order your lunch first. I told them I had both so I wish the staff would have told me that. From the looks of it they had been taking apart the sandwich kitchen area for a bit. Also, I came here trying to get a birthday cake. They do not so cake decorating much any more. I went in about a month and half before the birthday and I was told they were too busy to decorate a cake but they could do the printing like Safeway or such and put that on a cake. This place was on top of my list to try in Santa Cruz and I am pleased to say that it lived up to the hype. Their hot chocolate is to die for - very rich and creamy. I can't recall the exact name (probably brown sugar) but the cookie we had was something like a stroopwafel but thicker and quiet buttery. Their outdoor patio is like a lush garden filled with seasonal flowers. Just thinking about it makes me happy. Their baked goods like the tomato pesto croissant and apricot roll are perfect if you want something delicious yet easy on the stomach. This salad ($12.45, June 2024) is "comfort food" for my son-in-law, who follows a Paleo diet. Our intention was to buy a freshly-made salad for him, but when we went into the bakery/cafe, there was a long line so we decided to just get one from the still-fresh shelf. This salad features half of an avocado, filled with curried chicken salad (roasted chicken, dried apricots, cranberries, chives, apples, celery, mayo, and curry powder), and served with red leaf lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and lemon vinaigrette dressing. Got the ham and cheese croissant this past Monday and it was a good size, loaded with a thick layer of cheese and sliced ham (nice and salty), and wrapped in a perfectly cooked flaky pastry shell. Would have been better heated, but surprisingly they didn't offer this. Also got an iced mocha with nonfat milk and two pumps of mocha, it was yummy and made just right (and I love that they offered nonfat milk as an option, which is rare). The cafe has some tables and seating and a bit of art/decor on the walls, but it didn't exactly feel welcoming inside, a combination of the service slightly lacking in care, the limitations noted in various signs (related to service and offerings), and just the overall vibe of the place on a weekday afternoon. They didn't even bring out napkins when another customer informed the staff that there were none out front at the coffee condiment station. That being said, I believe they probably have better days, and I wouldn't mind returning to try other stuff on the menu. read more

The food at the Buttery is consistently good. The service has improved greatly in the past few years. I enjoy their salads and often have them for lunch. However.... they need to change their dressings. Their salsa is bad and their salad dressing is inedible. Please evaluate and change your dressings or at least give customers a choice. read more
