    Callahan's Bar

Friendliest bar in town! Three pool tables! Four dart boards and a private dart room! Has a private gaming room too! With two pinball games and two old school stand up games. Cocktails in a pint glass is the norm here! TV's from all angles! No smoking indoors anymore, thank God! But if you must you can smoke out back in the new fenced in patio (thanks to Covid). There is also an area on the side where you can escape for a smoke or some fresh air. The juke box is always going at this bar! Good luck getting in the queue. Best come equipped with the touch tunes app! Excellent food next door and a hotel across the street just in case you have a little too much to drink.

    Getting it started at 1:30pm!

Was out bar hopping for St.Pattys day and we started at a quaint watering hole by the name of Callahans. It was a real chill spot and you can tell the patrons were regulars there because how familiar everyone was with one another. The have a giant foam Jinga and 2 pool table for your beer drinking entertainment. I also had the pleasure of sitting on one of the most comfortable couches I've ever sat on...no lies. I only had beers so I can review their drinks. BTW! There's like this hidden bar behind the bar. It's a hidden speakeasy that I'm going to rent out one of these days. Oh they had free pastries. Pastries for the win. I do recommend Callahans and look forward to my next visit. It was a nice escape from what I'm use to in Cupertino, Campbell and Santa Row. The air was free of pretentiousness.

I come to Callahan's for one reason. To see Chelsea. Chelsea makes this bar what it is. Without her: It's a shell-of-a-dive bar With her: It's a party. She livens up the place. She fills up the place. It's regulars are a little bit country and a little bit rock 'n roll and everything in-between. Bikers, babes, boozers, tatooers and losers. You can find 'em all here thanks to Chels. She draws everyone in by mixing the best cocktails and as always giving the most professional service. Always love visiting her.

Callahan's is the kind of neighborhood bar that made the t.v. show "Cheer's" so popular. It is a place to come where people know your name and if not, they will by the end of the evening. Walking through the front door, you are greeted by a big, stone hearth and roaring fire.which is so welcoming during the "winter" months. Rachel, the Owner, is generally around with a big smile on her face and if not, she has a "posse" of beautiful women making everyone feel at home. She has changed Callahan's from a "hole in the wall", "dive bar", "biker bar" to a place where EVERYONE feels comfortable. It's large enough to hold pool tournaments (every Wednesday night at 7p), dart leagues, fundraising events and holiday celebrations (great for office parties) yet the big, overstuffed chairs sprinkled throughout add a feeling of intimacy. The whole staff are super engaging, fun, social and eager to please, making an array of exotic cocktails, many times bringing fresh fruit from their own gardens. The beer is always cold, excellent for watching your favorite teams on any one of the 6 flat screens T.V.s perfectly positioned throughout. Wednesday is the infamous pool tournament that is anyone's game from beginners to "damn good" players and women are more than always welcome to show them who's boss! Don't be surprised if you walk in the back door to yummy homemade dishes that'll only cost a few bucks and many times the proceeds go to someone in need! Not to be forgotten, Callahan's is THE ONLY BAR IN SC that has CROWN ROYAL ON TAP to add a bit of class! So, yes, it is a place with an open door policy where jeans and cowboy boots compliment diamond tiara's, lobster (great restaurant next door that delivers) is swilled down with PBR and S.F. Niner fans shake the hands of Oakland Raider fans! I know, I just went too far! But if there were such a common ground, Callahan's is it! Disclaimer: I have nothing to do with the operation of Callahan's. I am not on staff, paid or otherwise. I just happened to find a place where everyone knows my name!!

The restaurant has an open, beachy décor, and everything inside looked clean and well maintained. The food is definitely on the pricey side, but we did enjoy what we ordered. Service was excellent: we were seated quickly, given time to settle in, and then the waiter took our drink order. He even offered a small sparkling wine tasting so we could choose the one we liked best. We ordered the breakfast burrito, which was very flavorful. The chorizo added a great kick, and the avocado we added really rounded everything out. The small cup of salsa was tasty and added some heat. The burrito itself had a nice char on the outside, giving it a well‑done finish. We also tried the Seaside Benedict, which was both beautifully presented and delicious. The potatoes could have been cooked a bit longer, but they were still edible. We liked the fresh greens on the plate, and the English muffin had a sourdough‑like flavor that worked really well. Overall, we enjoyed our experience.

The drinks here did not disappoint, they were well balanced and hit the spot perfectly. We perused the bar menu since that's all that was open at this point, and while so much sounded good, we ended up doing a custom order for a regular side of fries and the onion dip that normally comes with chips. Fries were good, not my favorite kind, but still good, and the onion dip was really great! The bar and surrounding area was open seating. We got a table close to the bar, so some ocean views just from a far. Service was friendly and even though it was pretty crowded, we never had to wait too long to be checked in on.

A restaurant dedicated to The Cheese. Cool…read more I moved from Santa Clara to Santa Cruz in 1972 and thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I bought my first website from the O'Neill dive shop at the Harbor. Learned to surf at Cowells Beach, wearing O'Neill Seal Suits and Super Suits and Animal Skins, chasing Jack O'Neill around in his balloon with Mad Mike driving. Timmy O'Neill pushed me out of a dingy in the harbor channel once but I've forgiven him. They called Jack "The Cheese" but apparently I've been gone a while because I wasn't aware there was an entire restaurant, bar and lounge dedicated to The Cheese. Went there on a Thursday night in June and didn't have enough quarters to pay the parking meters on that uphill. Got lucky and found a parking space at Cowell's and used the change machine to get $5 in quarters, which is what it cost to park for a couple hours. Walked past a mural dedicated to several decades of Jack O'Neill going back to the 1950s: wetsuits, boats, hot air balloons, smiling girls. The air smelled like stale fish and salt. Inside was a clean, well-lighted place somewhere between funky and luxury .But closer to luxury. They've done a nice job with this place. The prices are reasonable in a city and a state and a time where prices can be unreasonable. Sat at a table up against the window, with a view over Cowells and the wharf and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and the lights of all the fishing boats in the bay I ordered the loaded fries with avocado, which is kind of like french fry nachos. And they were good. Lots of Cheese. It's a smart idea to dedicate an entire restaurant to The Cheese, as this place is over the dirt where the first O'Neill Surf Shop was in Santa Cruz was way back when starting around 1959 when Jack moved his business and his family down to Santa Cruz and was perfectly positioned for the surf boom lit by the movie Gidget that exploded into the Beach Boys and Frankie and Annette and everybody went surfing. Only glitch was when I asked the bartender for the bathroom code and he looked at me askance and wouldn't give it up. He said it was for hotel guests only. Aren't food establishments required to provide bathrooms to customers? If I had any friends, I would take them to the Jack O'Neill Restaurant and Lounge. It's got atmosphere. P.S I've interviewed around a dozen white shark attack victims. I get their stories and tell them: "You had a rough day. I'll see if I can get you a new wetsuit. Look at the O'Neill catalogue and tell me what you want and I'll call Pat O'Neill." And Pat always comes through with quality neoprene, so maybe a restaurant for him some day?
