I was quoted an absurd amount by other contractors so when Lawrence gave me a more reasonable price I decided to use Choice Green. Lawrence and Rashaan came on time and removed the furniture and patched up the minor damage left on the wall. They were fast and really nice. I then asked if they could come back and patch a massive hole in my bathroom wall left by the plumber who installed my toilet. Lawrence came back on Labor Day Sunday and patched up the wall which was a very difficult job as the toilet pipe's placement required it to basically be built in to the wall. These Guys are compete crooks! They came out on Sunday because our rental property had low heat. We were told that the job was $300. I live out of town, we sent the money. They bled our tanks and now Tuesday we have no heat. I called back and now they are not guaranteeing our work and don't want to comeback without wanting more money. This is a complete scam and still have to pay more money and still have it fixed. This is just plain wrong and we are going to cal the Better business bureau to report this situation. Turns out Laurence from Choice Green Handyman was a great "choice." Here's why: I had a "work-in-progress" that I wanted to suspend from the ceiling over my bed, sort of a canopy. The sculpture is composed of sturdy plastic pieces that are attached to each other to form a porous wall. I first saw this on display in Vitra Design Store in Meatpacking and loved it! Long story short, I built the "wall" but needed to get it hung. Not as easy as it might seem since, as I was soon to discover, concrete ceilings are extremely difficult to drill holes into. Here's where Laurence came in. Through Yelp, I contacted a number of establishments. All gave me quotes, mostly low. Hmmmm, knowing what I was facing with the ceiling (again, sort of) I chose Lawrence simply because he didn't "lowball " me and knew what to do with the damn concrete ceiling! Key! Needless to say, two visits later, which included another visit to the hardware store along with a winter storm interlude, Laurence came back with his high-power drill and got the iffy (at best) job done. I'm pretty disappointed with my experience. My apartment's toilet bowl was not flushing properly, and each flush sent water up the bathtub drain. Lawrence came over with a water vacuum and spent hours sucking up water from the tub, walking it through my apartment (and spilling drain water all over the floors and hallway rug), pouring it onto the street curb, and repeating the process. When the tub was finally close to empty, he immediately started pouring really intense chemicals (that got so hot it smoked) down the drain. After a while, that didn't seem to be working, so he started trying to snake the drain, but wasn't able to get the snake very far. He didn't own an electric snake, so after a few hours, he went to the Home Depot to buy one, and started using that on the tub drain. Finally, even though no progress seemed to have been made (the drain wasn't emptying at all), he tried flushing the toilet again, which immediately fully refilled the tub. This was really depressing. So what did he do? He started the hours-long process of vacuuming up the water, again. Midway through, he tried to snake the drain and the toilet again, with no effect. Finally, I said enough is enough, if you don't think you can fix this, let's just call it a day. At this point, he picked up the trash lying around, wiped down a few surfaces of the disaster-area bathroom with a damp rag that was lying on the floor, and said that he would charge me $300 for the time spent. I was exhausted, and just wanted this to be over, so I said ok. It took me hours to clean up the apartment, my bathtub had (and still has) a lot of dark stains from the chemicals he used, which I still can't remove, and the plumbing still wasn't working. The next day, my landlord sent some new plumbers. They took one look at the half-full bathtub, put down cardboard on the bathroom floor, removed the toilet, used a machine for a few minutes, and within half an hour, they said they were done. The bathtub was empty, the toilet flushed, there was no mess, everything was good. Lawrence is a nice person, but he is not a plumber. Maybe he could fix a dripping faucet, but if you have an actual plumbing problem, call a different company. After seeing how easily the other plumbers fixed the problem, I feel pretty cheated out of $300, and if I could get the money back, I would. (He hasn't responded to my attempt to contact him about this.) He should not offers services for plumbing jobs like this. read more

I do not recommend. The task was to hang 2 curtain rods and a wall mirror. Lawrence broke one bracket of the curtain rod, which is not why I had a problem. Crate and Barrel should make sturdier equipment but Lawrence did not say anything. I asked him 'where is the middle bracket' then he tells me he broke it. He was trying to hide the issue. He does not offer to finish the job (meaning saying "hey get the bracket and I will come back later to fix). He says 'well the 2 holes are in the wall', implying I do it myself. Also he made several holes in the wall and never said anything...seems to be the theme of this. I cannot imagine a man who prides himself in his work would be so careless and not want to right his wrong. I did pay him the full $85 because I did not, as a small female, want to have an argument with a man in my apt alone. I called him and left a voicemail and texted him 3 times asking him to fix the wall and hang up the 3rd bracket. He responded with 'When you get the piece, contact us for scheduling' . I thought about it and NO THANKS....too little, too late. I decided I do not want him to enter my apt again. I called my Sup in my building and showed him the terrible work. I agree with what my Sup said 'this guy clearly doesn't know what he's doing'. My sup repaired and painted the wall, out of the kindness of his heart. A genuine kind man. I am thankful I did not trust Lawrence with hanging my flat screen and will happily pay BestBuy to do it. Ironically in my last apt my mother's 70 yr old handyman hung my 2 rods, mirror and tv ALONE and perfectly. Lawrence has a lot to learn. Please see my attached picture of my wall in which Lawrence made several holes in an attempt to hang a Crate and Barrel rod. Lesson learned. I think I understand why there are so few negative reviews here since these men know exactly where you live, but having chosen this company because of raving Yelp reviews I encountered such incompetence and dishonesty, that I feel obligated to warn others. My advice is as follows: 1. Choose someone else, anyone else 2. If you exhausted all your options and you have to go with Choice Green - never ever pay upfront 3. If you have to pay upfront - never ever pay cash 4. If you have to pay cash upfront...well, too bad for you I needed two AC units installed and got a quote of usd 370 plus the actual cost of Plexiglas. As I was planning to pay cash, I asked how much is the maximum cost for Plexiglas is likely to be and got a reply that it would be usd 70. So I was prepared to pay a maximum of usd 440. I guess you can imagine my surprise when I was asked to pay usd 614 and after detailed discussion of items had to pay usd 600? I was charged several other things not mentioned in the quote, but to come to my point about incompetence - Lawrence told me that one of the units requires Plexiglas and a very intricate manual cutting of it, which (the cutting alone) costs usd 70. This was not true, the Plexiglas was not required and no manual cutting work was needed. Lawrence was not competent enough to see that while standing in front of the window and the AC with a ruler in his hand (either he is incompetent or he was outright lying about the necessity of it). You can say it's ok to make an honest mistake? True, but what would you do if you made an honest mistake - you would probably return the money for the "intricate cutting work" that you did not do and at least leave the store receipt for the Plexiglas? Well, not Lawrence - he came up with all kinds of excuses why he would not return the money he charged for cutting that he did NOT do (at that point I already stopped asking why I had to pay for the Plexiglas that was not necessary and was just trying to get back at least the money for the cutting), trying to say that he charged me for the removal of the child guards ( while he made me get the super and it was the super who removed child guards and whom I had to pay additionally), blaming the building management for this and that and the other, and even listing the heat as the reason that he kept the money, nice huh? After a lot of discussions, during which I had to hear about his working all night for other customers and A LOT of other irrelevant stuff, he agreed to refund me 50 dollars (which is nowhere near the price of plexiglass+the nonexistent work). I waited for 4 days, needless to say the money was not returned and messages and calls were ignored. Oh, and by the way, the installation job is botched as well (see the photo) AC unit is attached by a screw on one side only, leaving a gap for air on the other side (that's again to the incompetence). The first guy was available 2 days after Lawrence was and was going to charge me $10 more to do the job. I had sent a million yelp messages out to different businesses and he quoted me the most competitive price. Lawrence did an excellent job installing my air conditioner. I called him this afternoon from my office, and he came over later in the afternoon - as soon as I was available to meet him at my apartment. But first HE called several hardware stores on my behalf to find a store that (1) was on my route home, (2) was open on Memorial Day and (3) had the air conditioner window support that I needed in stock. I picked up the support and we were good to go. My air conditioner presented a trying case. The accordion pieces barely stretched to fill the window frame, and so Lawrence made doubly sure that there were no cracks for air to leak through. And once we had it installed, it started making weird noises that required additional adjustment (and some banging), at which point it was silent. Lawrence also added the plastic well that channels water out of the AC, which might seem like an obvious detail, but the person I used to install my air conditioner previously hadn't bothered with it. There are some caveats: This was not a difficult task, so I don't know how Lawrence would do with a challenging problem (thus, four stars rather than five). I install my window A/C unit annually once the hot weather hits, however the machine was not working. I could feel the evaporator producing cold air, but the fan was not moving and the air could not be moved into my apartment. Using Yelp, I sent out a bulk email to different repair shops and most replied that they cannot help. Lawrence L. got in touch with me and saved me both time and money by simply having me open the unit myself and spin the fan manually. I immediately noticed the fan was jammed with gunk when I attempted to move the fan blades, but once moved and powered on the fan motor was able to spin the blades and clear out any of the left over debris. I admit I was being lazy at first and did not want to bother with it myself (plus the heat may have got to me a bit), but I cannot thank Lawrence enough for his simple suggestion. read more

We had bathroom projects in NJ. After we called Lawrence for an appointment on weekend for an estimate. I blame my self for this part as Choice Green is not expertised in such field. The team showed up, 90 minutes late due to traffic, and we understood. The first flag raised when they asked me for a tape to measure the bathroom size. All the other contractors came with their own tapes. During the measurement, Lawrence showed me some of his finished projects and they look nice. That was 30 days ago and we haven't heard from Choice Green ever since. read more

Great job by Lawrence wall mounting my new Samsung TV. I spent a lot of time and paid up for the slimmest set and wall mount option, so wanted to make sure the actual mounting was perfect. Larry came in and obviously had a ton of experience, and had worked with my set and mount before. He did a great job with numerous "tricks of the trade" for the mounting and in wall wiring and I am very very pleased with the outcome. Process-wise, Larry was great. Was able to come promptly, kept me informed on his ETA and came on time. Got the job done reasonably quickly. Asked me a ton of questions to make sure it was installed exactly where I wanted it installed. Only nitpick would be that I wished there were a more polished solution for where the wires entered the walls. Given the powercord has to go through there I don't think there is. But if there were a more optimal solution, I'd gladly hire Larry to implement it. And the solution that Larry did bring is pretty good, don't get me wrong, and would work perfectly for most people out there. read more

I had my air conditioner removed last night by Laurence from Choice Green. He responded to my text inquiry by phone call in less than half an hour and was able to complete the job the night of the request. He arrived about ten minutes after the end of the window of time we had agreed on (he did text me to let me know he'd be a bit late), but upon arrival he completed the removal quickly and effectively. He was courteous, communicative, and engaging, taking the time to explain to me how the air conditioner could have been better installed and giving me tips for reinstalling it next spring. I paid the flat rate of $80 that he quoted to me during our initial phone conversation. Generally, he seemed knowledgeable, diligent, and responsible. I have no experience with anyone else from the company (I don't think he's the only one, although I do think he might be the owner or a manager), but given my experience with Laurence, I'd recommend it if you think the price is reasonable. read more

If I could rate with negative stars I would. Lawrence was very unprofessional and I WOULD NOT HIRE HIM FOR ANY WORK I NEED COMPETED. Lawrence said he would come out and charge a $60 fee to give me a quote to paint my apartment. This $60 was supposedly a discount because he was referred by a friend. He said this could be applied to any work he completes. Lawrence comes to my home (an hour late) with another gentleman and proceeds to look at and access the space to give a quote. He comes to me and asks me what other work I needed him to complete as I had sent him a list of needs prior to him arriving. Because he decided to show up late I had my father and another handyman already working and so I told him he could finish the outside locks tonight and get me the quote to bid for the other job. Prior to quoting me a price on the locks Lawrence begins work, while I am downstairs working on another project. He comes downstairs with the lock in his hand and asks where I want it. I instructed him as to where I'd want the locks and he and "his helper" begin to work on the locks. He finished in 30 minutes or so because it was literally a lock change that I was going to do myself but allowed him to do it to put towards the $60 assessment fee. I asked him how much the quote was for the paint job on an apartment no bigger than 1500sf and he quoted me $7k. I then asked how much it was to replace the locks and he said $350. Lawrence has lost his mind to think that anyone would pay him such an absurd amount. I had already gotten a few quotes earlier and the others were about $6k cheaper than his. On top of all this when he left my inside door would not shut and I had to hire an actual professional to fix the lock that he supposedly fixed. STAY AWAY AT ALL COST! You'll thank me! read more

Bottom line...I would not hire Lawrence again and I advise you not to. For details, read on... I hired Lawrence to replace an electrical junction box in my living room ceiling, so I could hang a ceiling fan. He represented himself as someone with experience with electrical work, so I took his word for it. To make life simple for him, I had all the wires capped and separated into groups. I made it easy for him to remove the old box and install the new one without losing track of which wires belonged with each other. Lawrence decided to separate all the wires at the same time and proceeded to lose track of which ones belonged together. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, but in NYC pre-war buildings, wiring is a bit of a puzzle. I soon figured out that he actually had no real experience with electrical work. Anyone with basic electrical experience knows the color coding of wiring. Black = HOT and White = NEUTRAL. Lawrence did not know this. In the end, Lawrence left me with a completely unpowered living room. He attempted to leave me with a completely unpowered bedroom, but I insisted that he keep working until he restored power there. And, after he left, I discovered that he left a bare wire in the junction box, which shorted out and rained sparks in my living room. This is a big deal in old buildings with a lot of dry wood in the framing!! Of course, Lawrence wanted his fee, which I paid him because the box was physically installed. Before he left, he recommended an electrician to come fix the wiring...almost done...So, the electrician came to see what had been done and laughed after I explained what Lawrence did. He found broken and unwrapped wires (Major fire hazard!!) and he had to remove and reinstall all of the work done and re-splice all the wiring. I contacted Lawrence the following day detailing what had to be done to fix his work. I asked him to pay for the electrician, which still would have left him with a profit. It's been three days and I haven't heard back from him. The negative reviews on him are real. I only wish I would have put more weight on them. Good luck with your projects. :) read more

When you're in the client service business, as I am, there is no reason to treat your customers with as much eye rolling, deep sighs, and excuses as I had to face with Choice Green. Choice Green/Lawrence spent two days installing two window A/C units, and the entire process was difficult and defensive. Choice Green prides itself on having over 10 years of experience in installing A/C units (I was told this repeatedly), but too many errors in judgment (leading to multiple pained discussions about rising costs and increasing fees) lead me to believe this is not the case. Even when I attempted to mitigate labor costs by asking my super to pitch in, Choice Green couldn't stop complaining about the burden of this job to him. He only stopped complaining about his labor costs when I informed him that I, too, had to take two days OFF of work to deal with this. Even something as standard as preparing a certificate of insurance (a typical policy these days in Manhattan coop buildings) was met with unprofessional exasperation. Beginning with the apartment visit where we agreed on the work to be performed through till the final product, Choice Green: (1) Forgot to record at least one measurement of the A/C unit and had to call me to take measurements for him; (2) Miscalculated the cost and the ETA of getting a custom-cut plexiglass piece (turning a 1 day job into 2 days); (3) Installed the wrong size bracket; (4) Ran out of supplies. When I pointed out the gaps in window caulking, he refused to patch up the work unless we renegotiated a fee for the time it would take him to buy more -- what kind of 10-year professional doesn't bring enough window caulk for 2 A/C units? (5) LEFT HIS TOOLS ON MY BED and DIDN'T CLEAN UP AFTER HE LEFT (I had to hire a cleaning service, who noticed bugs underneath a pile of bolts he had left). Finally -- don't look at the 5 star reviews -- look at the 1 star reviews and the attitude of Choice Green's response. Never have I seen a more petulant retort come from a "seasoned" professional. Avoid at all costs (when it comes to A/C work... seems like the TV mounting reviews adore him). read more

We hired Choice Green to split a room in our apartment. The wall is built at an okay standard and we feel overcharged for the end result. They took many breaks which caused the job to last two days longer than they predicted. The mess they left was terrible with dust everywhere from sanding down the wall. We didn't understand why they didn't bring some sort tarp to layover the floor in the very least. Various items were left behind including big chunks of sheet rock. They claimed they would clean behind themselves which was the total opposite. This job was done in a totally unprofessional manner. What takes the cake is Lawrence went back and forth to our bathroom, which we had no problem with him using but after the job was done, our toilet isn't working properly. We believed plaster was poured down there which has completely clogged our system. We certainly should be compensated for this inconvenience. Two words- con artists and awful ! Guys are pro at blackmailing and doing shoddy work!!! The entire experience was horrendous starting from get go. I needed to get closet doors sawed from bottom as we recently installed new carpets and Lawrence gave me a quote of $310 which included taking doors to basement and sawing it off. He arrived about 1 hr later than he texted me he would come and started on the job. However 30 mins in the job he decided the price had gone up to $410. That I think is the work of a con artist- he knows now that job has started I had no negotiating power with all doors sawed half way through- he made up a lame excuse that his saws were not appropriate and he didn't want to damage it so price was up $100 or I give him in writing that I'll accept a shitty job if I agree to original price! That was blackmail and totally unethical. They barely got a 1/3 done on that day and decided to finish on second day. Second day one hour in they realized they have forgotten the sand paper and having started work- took a 1.5 hr off to make a trip to home depot and take a break. Later at 2 pm Lawrence tells me he has made another appointment at 2 and he'll need to come back to finish my job at 4pm. That is again mismanaged jobs and he makes it sound like he's doing me a favor by squeezing in my appointment on that day!! The quality of work is also poor with uneven spaces under doors and misfitted dooors. All in all- do yourself a favor and never hire these guys again- shitty work, blackmailing folks and totally mismanaged time schedule!!! read more

The reasons for my poor rating are twofold - arriving two hours late and poor quality work. We agreed to a time for my window unit AC install, 10 am, and the day prior he called and asked if he could move it to a later time because it would work better with his schedule. I agreed to change the time to noon, but explicitly stated that it shouldn't be later than this because it was going to be a hot day and we really wanted the AC installed early on in the day. He said noon it was. By 12:40, he still hadn't arrived. I messaged him, but heard nothing back. A little after 1 he called and said he would be there in 20-30 minutes. He didn't actually show up until 2. No reason for his delay was given, nor was an apology offered. Then there is the quality issue. I paid him $25 extra to install plexiglass on the side of the AC unit in order to cover the whole window. He cut two pieces of plexiglass and had them awkwardly placed over each other since the opening was larger than his single piece of plexiglass. In short, it looked terrible, not only because it was cut and placed poorly, but also because the plexiglass was all marked up and dirty. After he left, I tried to clean the plexiglass, but the outer side of the glass was the one that was really dirty, and it was impossible to clean without taking out all of the screws. So that is what I ended up doing, only to find that the plexiglass was all marked up and imperfect, therefore impossible to clean and make it look halfway decent. Lastly, we just had this whole apartment painted, and he made a large dent on the inside of our windowsill, removing a chunk of paint along with it. The AC works, it is in fact installed, and I do think he tried, but his timeliness was terrible and the quality of work was poor. I would not recommend him for an AC install. read more
