Greg and his team just finished my backyard (stamp concrete). Before choosing G&L Pavers I did an extensive research and interviewed close to 15 companies. Greg stood out amongst all for the following reasons: 1. Did an extensive walkthru of my backyard and explained the whole process to me in detail in a very professional manner. 2. He came well prepared with samples of his prior work 3. After the initial walkthru, he followed up the same night with a very detailed quote. Every thing was laid out in the quote with no ambiguity and a with a clear timeline for completion. This was missing from the other quotes I got from other companies which were basically 2-3 liners. His quote was very reasonable and I had a fair idea (after all my prior interviews and quotes) that Greg was a genuine guy. He mentioned in his contract that he will there on-site all the time and will not be working on parallel projects. This gave me a very good feel. I have heard horror stories that contractors sub-lease to others and the main guy is never there on the job. 4. After the email, he followed up with a courtesy call and at no point I felt pressured nor did he tried to upsell. He is a straight forward guy and I felt that right away when I met him the day he came for the initial walkthru. I decided to gave him the contract and I was glad that I choose Greg. He completed the project per the timelines mentioned in the contract, throughout the whole time he communicated with me constantly, he was there on the job everyday and supervised his workers. There was a day where he was really sick and still showed up to ensure his team was supervised. At the end he delivered a quality product. Few days later, I noticed a few minor things about the job and contacted him. He replied right away and addressed the concerns. Overall, great guy, straight shooter and great service. We were looking to get out pavers done for the side of our pool. Came to the Yelp community to find a reliable and top quality paver contractor. I read the reviews of several contractors including G & L Pavers and Landscaping. As anyone, I read the great along with the negative reviews in Yelp. I realize you cannot please everyone, but you also needed to hire a reliable and top quality contractor. I decided to contact six contractors from Yelp. They all provided bids, some extremely high and others extremely low. Obviously, the high bids I decided to not use them. The low bids, when contractors come out to measure, they seemed to be starting out in the business. Greg came out from G & L pavers and provided a reasonable bid. I was impressed by his experience and knowledge regarding pavers. That evening he provided a type up bid clearly outlining the labor and material cost. He also provided the option of me getting the materials on my own to save money. That gave me comfort in that he was a professional but also was looking to make the project affordable for me. When we got started with the project, we was here working alongside his crew. Unfortunately, I made an error in my measurements and ran out of materials. Greg kindly went to get more sand and pavers to ensure the project was completed on time. It took him and his crew two days to put pavers on 429 sq foot of area. I was impressed with their dedication and efficiency. Moreover the work is solid, quality and with attention to detail. Based on this experience, I would highly recommend Greg and his crew to anyone for paver installation. If he seems short at the beginning, give him some time. He warms up once he begins the project. Greg is fantastic! He did some veneer panels and bull nose bricks for us and did a really good job. He spend a lot of extra time/care to ensure that the existing concrete wall was level so that the lines for the veneer panels would come out looking great. And they did. Yesterday, Greg came out to finish the joints, and worked all day in 100 degree temperatures. Greg is flexible, trustworthy and has integrity. He left the area clean and overall I can't say enough about his commitment, despite the supply house having to split the order (due to stock-out) and forcing him to do it in 2 stages. Initially, Greg worked fast and communicated well. I was quite satisfied with how things were going. Following the concrete pour (poured/stamped concrete on a ~600 square ft yard) I was pretty dissatisfied with the end result. Foot impressions in the concrete, stamps misaligned, inconsistent coloring throughout to name some of the issues. When discussing it with Greg, blame was directed at the concrete company used. Further, Greg requested that, in writing, I agree and start communicating directly with the concrete company instead of with him to resolve the issues. Obviously I was not willing to do this as I didn't hire the concrete company, I hired (and paid in full) Greg. Long story short, Greg did spend the time and some money to attempt to remedy the issues(that he agreed were unacceptable), but near the end had little interest in communicating with me at all and just wanted to be done with the job. Overall I don't love my backyard and it wasn't cheap. Can't recommend. read more

Thank you Greg for all the great work. I hired Greg to install a 60' long, 40" high CMU wall, so i could later add a rock veneer to it. Upon his first visit we talked about how I was also going to do Astro turf in our back yard and concrete. Greg mentioned he did that work as well and was very knowledgeable when discussing everything with me. He showed me pictures that showed awesome work and we were so glad we had greg do not just the wall, but also the grass. My only regret was not having Greg do our concrete as well. Greg did a really great job on our backyard. This was my first landscape project and I had a design I had been working on but Greg offered practical advice that enhanced my dream backyard without breaking the bank. He taught me what would work and what wouldn't and has done so many projects (see his extensive portfolio) that he had many suggestions on how to spruce things up some more, pun intended. He was quite candid about what design elements would put us over budget and was never pushy with his ideas. He told me he would be done within a certain timeframe and he stuck to that pretty well. He worked on it for maybe a week (we have a medium sized yard in a new community in Modesto) and kept things tidy at the end of each day. Everything was clearly detailed in our contract so we knew what we were getting and when payments were due. The end product is amazing, adding value to our home! We wanted a modern, clean look with the right amount of grass, rock, cement and low maintenance evergreen trees to line the back wall and he provided all of that without having me worry about buying anything from Home Depot or Lowe's. Really the most I did was give him my concept and look at certain plants that would go with my design. Greg is a great guy that would go above and beyond to deliver the design you've envisioned. He's also easy to reach with just a phone call. We also had he pleasure of working with his wife Linda who handles the payments for the job. Wow! I contacted Greg based on the reviews I read here. Our experience with him was the complete opposite of what I read. I'm sure his workmanship is great, but we'll never know personally. He started out fine, but then completely changed when it was time to schedule the job. His communication turned out to be horrible and he came across rude and moody. No return texts or calls. A simple "I'm sorry I can't do the job" would have been great. I visited one of the people he gave us references for to see his work. They said the same about his personality...grouchy and moody, work was ok. But at least he showed up for them. So all I can say is GOOD LUCK if you call this company. I will say his failure to get back to us ended up being a huge blessing in disguise. We found someone to do double the retaining walls we spoke to Greg about for half the price! read more

BUYER BEWARE! We hired Greg Smith, aka G & L Landscape, aka Evergreen Landscape, to landscape our back yard, which included sprinklers, sod and shrubs and plants. He will show you an album of his work (mostly rock, pavers, etc.) and explain his one-year warranty on all work, but what he fails to explain is the fact that he charges double for all materials. For example, we were charged $1,290.00 for plants. The plant, shrubs, flowers, etc., were purchased from Home Depot. We went to Home Depot and priced the plants he purchased and discovered that the plants actually cost $687.08. He charged us almost double what they actually cost. When we realized what he had done, we e-mailed him and texted him requesting receipts for the plants, which he never provided to us. The next time he came to our home to inspect the sod we confronted him about the his excessive charge for the plants. He told us it was his mark-up in order to warranty the plants for a year. Had this been explained to us in the beginning we would have purchased the plants ourselves. We first posted a review on July 27th.....we are rescinding that review given the fact that the work that was done did not meet our expectations and we are still having problems with the work that was done.
