I was a new bee and picked this salon because they let you book your service online which is so convenient. They also had ample availability so I got in the day after I booked. It's unassuming from the outside but when you walk in, it's spacious and modern. Jenny cut my hair. I'm not a super hair/makeup kinda girl so I told her I was there to donate my hair and asked her to take off at least 8 inches. Otherwise I let her do her thing and I was very pleased. I spontaneously felt like making a change to my appearance and Choices was the most affordable hair salon that was open on a Sunday so I went with it! I was booked an appointment with Sharon, who the receptionist told me had been there for many years (I later found out she's been there for 30 years!) Sharon was very nice and super quick! I showed her a few pictures of angled lobs (long bobs) with blunt ends and textured pieces. She advised me not to get too many layers because my hair would poof up (and I can confirm that this has happened in the past). She asked me questions along the way to make sure I was happy, and I trusted her judgment and let her do her thing. She was super quick- it was probably one of the quickest cuts I've ever had. Her experience truly showed! The only issue I had was that she put a little too much hair product (some wax and curl cream) in my hair to smooth it out but it because kind of crunchy and greasy, so I ended up washing my hair again at home. I was curious to see how even it was so I straightened it, and in the photos you can see how fabulous it looks! I'll definitely come back!! read more

New to area, long string of *horrible* cuts @ the low-cost chains. finally: researched the region and Choices had good reviews; rated one of the best in the area. Booked with Jean (same day appt) and got a *great* (basic "barber" ) cut at a great price. Jean actually listens to what you want and was very nice. Really like: they lay everything out; who is working, when, when\available, their level of experience (1-5) and related cost; so no surprises!!. Staff is courteous and helpful. They even offer discounts for seniors! My new favorite, reliable place! Great location, professional vibe. (Highly recommended; 4/5 stars cuz: I rank few things on the planet as perfect!). read more

Excellent hair cut from Joan! I found my first time visit to Choices Hair Studio to be a casual, comfortable atmosphere. As a new customer I always prefer the hairdresser to look at my hair, before shampooing, to better assess cut and style. Joan did this as a matter of routine which has not always been my experience at previous salons. The communication was easy and my haircut is fabulous. There was a stylist here who was just horrendous! She did an ok job with my hair, not spectacular. But she never took my hair texture into consideration when doing my hair. I have type 3a hair and she would always straighten it out when I would ask constantly for a curly cut! She was consistently late 15-25 mins to each appointment when I made sure to get there early everything. I gave her multiple chances to give me the haircut or color I wanted and it was always consistently wrong. I spent hundreds of dollars here and regret every penny! Not to mention, one of the times I came here a couple years ago to a different stylist, during covid and before the guidelines said that people who were positive could go to work as long as they're asymptomatic, she came in and only told me mid haircut that she tested positive! I am immuno-compromised and thank God that didn't kill me! This place is horrible, overpriced, and downright awful. I am never going back and I am going to make sure everyone I know never goes back here. If I could put a 0 star I would! read more

If you have curly hair - Avoid, avoid, avoid! Waited two weeks for a 'curly cut' from Elaine. I had a bad feeling when her initial impression when I took down my fine 3b curls, was "well I don't know what's wrong with your hair." Answer: nothing, I'm naturally curly, there was no product, chemical or color. She then began making ridiculous guesses about why my hair grew in asymmetrically, condescending inquiries into my medical history and giving just plain bad medical advice (I'm a doctor). I told her exactly what I wanted. It's simple, fine curls need a layered cut. Had my hair done curly all over the world, for decades, it hasn't changed. Told her this 4 times and she just ignored me. Said "well you've never had a curly cut." She literally parted my hair down the middle and chopped four inches of curls off straight across the bottom. FOUR CURLY INCHES. Then hacked at the back of my hair "to thin it out" and refused to put layers in "because your hair is too thin." When I complained that wasn't what I asked for she proceeded to style my hair into a giant Afro and exclaim how nice I looked. She took a course maybe 1997 and her approach reflects this. No knowledge of curl products. Said "well I've never heard of [products like Carol's Daughter, Miss Jessie, Curls] so they can't be that good." Recommend Paul Mitchell shampoo as the most important part of a curly hair routine?!? Then proceeded to up sell products that were clearly not right for my hair. Immediately sought out a corrective cut from another stylist, whose first comment was "you need some lift and volume" and proceeded to give me some BY ADDING LAYERS. Hands down worst hair experience ever. WILL NOT BE BACK. Will say it again - AVOID! read more

Recommended to me by a friend, I walked in to make an appointment and a senior stylist (Tina) was available, so I got my haircut right away. The staff were very friendly and Tina did not admonish me for coloring my own hair -- a first for a hair salon! The stylists are cooperative and engaging, it's a pleasant environment and even offers popcorn while you wait. I liked my cut and it was reasonably priced...even received a welcome gift. I have used this salon for years now and have been very pleased, for the most part. I have not stayed with any one stylist, but I have found that more experienced stylists give me better results. Big surprise there. I have straight hair that I've worn medium length and short, plus I do perms periodically, to make my hair a bit more lively. I strongly dislike fussing with my hair in the morning, so perms are preferable. Never have I been unhappy with a perm at this salon. The products are top notch and follow up care products are always available. If you are fussy about your hair, ask for an experienced stylist when you request an appointment. read more

I get the Brazilian Blowout once or twice a year, and am always left beyond satisfied. With complimentary beverages and a modern-chic salon, you feel comfortable and at home here. My hair stylist is Elaine, who has been doing my hair for years. She ensures everything is perfect and makes certain I don't leave unless I'm 100% happy. As a middle aged guy I was getting my hair cut here for several months before my 'stylist' left. After using someone else here a couple of times I will likely NOT return. Although the new stylist I've seen goes through the motions, she really doesn't scrutinize or seem to care much about her work, doesn't touch up after your hair's washed and dried (or drying) to adjust the cut. She simply asks, "Is that OK?" and, since she clearly doesn't care, when you say, "yeah, I guess it is", she disappears and you get a bill for $50+ for a basic haircut... Great service providers, true professionals in any line of work are so wonderful to find and support but this one... nah, later Choices. read more

DO NOT GOT YOUR NAILS DONE HERE!!! They redid the place recently but it seems that the nail room was an afterthought. There is no lighting back there. I have more polish on my fingers then I do my nails and they are not even or even smooth. When I woalked u=out I saw that the polish didn't even cover the center of the nails. I can do a much better job myself which is what I am going to do. Not worth even going back in to complain. Not qualified to do nails!!! read more

My first and last time going to this salon. We took my granddaughters (ages 5 and 11) to get a cut. When we called we informed the receptionist this was our first time at this salon. All the kids got was hair wet with a spray bottle, combed, cut straight across the back, combed and out the door we went with a bill of $70...YES you read that right and NO it isn't a typo. When we asked why so much we were informed their hair was cut by a level 3 stylist. We then said we did not request a level 3 nor were we told the price varies by what level stylist you want because had we been told that we would have asked for a level 1 or not go at all. Yes maybe it was my responsibility to ask prices before making the appointment however, shouldn't the fault lay on the salon who specifically asked and was told this was our first time there, to explain how their services work? read more

The males in my family have been getting their hair cut here for years, starting when I brought my now 27 year old son to get his first haircut. When he left for college, I kept coming and have no complaints at all. Lindsey always takes very good care of me, and I always get compliments afterwards. Curly-hair girl here who loves Choices Hair Salon so much that I make the trek from Ballston Spa to Delmar every six weeks and have been doing so for years! I could get a specialized cut for curly hair close to home, but no one...and I mean no one...has ever been able to give me hair that makes me smile the way Elaine does. For more years than I want to count, I would leave appointments at other salons and with different stylists just feeling ho-hum at best or horribly upset at worst. I NEVER liked, much less enjoyed, my hair. Elaine has helped me fall in love with my curls. Good riddance to the days when I would wear it chopped short in a pixy cut -- now I have long, bouncy, perfectly formed curls whenever I step out of Elaine's chair. And as if that were not enough, she has become a good friend caring for me as well as she does my hair. I know I will leave having enjoyed a few laughs or feeling supported if I am going through a troubling time. Elaine is the best. Everyone at the salon is professional and friendly. I went in to the Choices Hair Studio in Delmar, NY yesterday afternoon around 4 p.m. There were a few kids and parents waiting and at the front desk, there were at least 3 employees. I asked the first girl I saw if someone had time to just quickly cut my daughter's bangs. I didn't need a cut or a shampoo. She barely glanced at the appointment book and says, "No, sorry, we have nothing." Really? Nothing? For a bang trim? I wonder if she could have asked one of the stylists if they had time when one of their clients was getting their hair colored or something. She was not very friendly or personable. We ended up going somewhere else. read more

Got a haircut (if that's what you want to call it) at this salon on October 8, 2012. The absolute worst cut I've ever had. According to the website, the stylist who did the cut has seventeen years' experience. She was in a big rush; I swear the entire process from start to finish, including shampoo, cut and "style" took twenty minutes. When I got home, I noticed that one side of my hair had a chunk that was seriously 1/2" longer than the rest. I asked for layers, and she randomly chopped huge chucks out of my hair. I asked for it to be texturized so it has a little lift and, to my horror, I saw her running the scissors up and down my hair. I felt like my haircut was being done by Edward Scissorhands. The remedy? To go back in and have them redo it? No way!! I made an appointment at a real salon today. read more

I hate to give one star because I used to go to Choices quite a lot in the late 90s and early 2000s and my experiences in the past were all good. Now I just go on occasion when I visit my mother who lives in the area, and my past couple of experiences there have not been very pleasant and the most recent one simply awful. My most recent experience with just a simple color ended up with the stylist doing the most sloppy job I have ever experienced -- it felt like she were a 3 year old painting my head with a brush, and it got all over my face, my neck, in my ear and she was extremely rough, sloppy, and fast. (And might I mention also not very friendly). The washing was also rough and sloppy, the hair cut extremely brief, and the blow dry just a quick, rough thing without any attempt whatsoever to style it or make my hair look nice. And I paid $99 for that. When I got home I had to spend 20 minutes trying to get the color off my face -- I even still had some in my ear that I didn't realize until I got home. I just wanted to get out of that place. I hardly ever complain about service, especially if it at least standard, but this was ridiculously sub-standard and I will not be going back there. I know there are some stylists at Choices that take their job way more seriously, so I don't want to condemn them... but I had to share my experience so those interested in going there for the first time may be wary of who they may end up with as their stylist. read more
