My recent visit was on a Sunday evening and it was crowded. It didn't take too long to order but it took a little longer to receive my order. My order consisted of 4 egg rolls , sesame chicken with fried rice and beef fun chow (spicy). Food was extremely fresh and the portions are ridiculously huge. Sooo much food- the dinner portions can feed 5000. Lol My only knock is how tight grip they are when you ask for certain sauces. Good grief, all this food requires more than 2 sauces. Called in order for eggrolls. 20 mins later I got there and still had to wait. Saw the cook out my order in queue for pick up. Cashier was talking 3 orders for walkins and answering phone. After she answered phone the 2nd time I loudly asked if my called in order was ready?! She gave or rather threw it in my hand and never once said "Thank You"! Customer Service is so important to me that I didn't want to eat those dang things afterwards. I got a VM the 1st time I called. Thinking they were busy I waited in a questionable parking lot to call back because I remembered I could hit one button on dashboard to call back. Cashier needs to wait on those in front of her b4 reaching for phone. They will call back like I did. They need a system to indicate when they out orders up too. If my order isn't going to be cooked until I get there, why bother? I hit brakes to avoid someone jumping in front of me. Bag slide forward and I touched eggroll with dirty hands to prevent it from hitting floor because they weren't secured in their bags nor the paper bag. My dog will enjoy that one when it cooks. Yeah not happy. How $5.95 x 2 turned into $13.83 is interesting. $11.90 plus Homewood tax doesn't come to that amount. There's no sign they charge a credit card fee otherwise I would've paid cash. If you don't like egg rolls but you haven't had the egg rolls here, then you don't really know if you like egg rolls. These are fresh! It's said by those who know that these are as good as those of Birmingham's first Chinese restaurant, the legendary Joy Young's. I've been coming here for over forty years JUST for the egg rolls. 3 for $5.45. I would strongly suggest you stick to take out here. This place started as take out only with no a la carte menu. They just had dinners for groups as in Dinner for 2, 4 etc. Then it was known for the huge portions of mandarin style Chinese American and even more well know for the impatience and brusqueness of the owner-operator. Not much has changed as far as the service goes. You should know what you want and don't ask any questions. They don't like questions. They don't serve ice water. Don't ask. They added a large dining room several years ago, but it's not welcoming- and DO NOT use the restroom here. You have been warned. It really has all the charm of a hot dog stand. Today, (late October 2022) only 6 tables out of ~20 had the chairs on the floor. It's not really fair for me to review the food here as I don't like this style of Americanized "Chinese" food. It reminds me of what we thought Chinese cuisine was in the 1960's. What was that brand of chicken chow mein your mother could buy in a CAN and warm it up on the night she ran out of Hamburger Helper? Ok-That's probably an exaggeration, as any restaurant surviving this long has to be doing something right besides their sublime egg rolls. The Chop Suey Inn has been on my radar for a while now. One of my Chinese friends recommended it. I respect his knowledge of Chinese cuisine, and not just because he's speaks the language. He told me this was the original Chinese restaurants in Birmingham, and they do a nice job on some traditional dishes. He also added that it was cheep. First impressions is the restaurant is much larger then it appears from the outside. It is a no frills, counter-order style restaurant. The decor is very dated, and it reminded me of my childhood. My mom and dad used to drag us to places like this. They were very simple, family-run places. The parents were typically first generation immigrants who worked hard to make a better life. They were not sophisticated restaurants; more like the Chinese version of the short-order grill. My grandfather cooked in a place like this in St. Louis. We affectionately referred to it as the "takee outee". So, David L and I stopped by for lunch on Friday. David ordered the Shrimp and Broccoli from the lunch menu. The owners speak Cantonese, so I knew that they could throw down some real southern Chinese cuisine, despite what the Americanized dishes show on the menu. I've come here twice now. I came late afternoon and luckily there was no line and only 2 ppl waiting. The egg rolls had a lot of great reviews but they were just OK to me. Definitely over hyped. The shrimp fried rice was pretty good. Had plenty of. But the star for me was the crispy shrimp with spicy pepper salt. The seasoning on it and the the green onion topping was delicious. But most of the seasoning is on the breading on the shell, so unless you're going to eat the shell, you have to peel shrimp. But either way, I would definitely get them again. read more

I was super impressed with the level of quality here. Tons of fresh veggies and I could taste and see the garlic in the Chicken with broccoli. I also, appreciated that they didn't load it with sugar and grease like other places. With that said this is a very standard American Chinese food but done right. The hot and sour soup is the best in town. You have to try it. They don't skimp on the ingredients or portions here. The prices are more reasonable then other places. You pay about .75 less and I hope they keep it that way because I will come back. With that said it's not a fancy eat in establishment. It's more of a take out joint. read more
