I live almost 3 hours from here and have heard so much about this restaurant from a friend and about their chicken egg foo young. Well, today I finally got a chance to try it and it was delicious! I also had the shrimp and broccoli with fried rice. I was welcomed as soon as I came in the door. I will most definitely return here the next time I'm in the area.

General Tso's with white rice. Get egg drop soup on the side too.

Best Chinese in town. Always fast, hot, fresh and best of all, delicious. They know what they're doing.

Awwww No! We came to get these delicious award winning people's choice egg rolls and fried dumplings on a Friday night. But, these egg rolls too salty! Bae can't even eat! . This has NEVER HAPPENED. You are crowded with folks everywhere. You are simply our favorite. We won't give up on you, but somebody got to loose with that salt! I can't give up on you, yet. So, I won't. I'll be back.

Chop Suey Inn is solid Chinese food. I absolutely LOVE their eggs rolls!!! Hands down some of the best in town!!! Trust me. If you come here , be patient because depending on your visit , there will be a line. If possible, I advise placing a call in order. Thank me later. My recent visit was on a Sunday evening and it was crowded. It didn't take too long to order but it took a little longer to receive my order. My order consisted of 4 egg rolls , sesame chicken with fried rice and beef fun chow (spicy). Food was extremely fresh and the portions are ridiculously huge. Sooo much food- the dinner portions can feed 5000. Lol My only knock is how tight grip they are when you ask for certain sauces. Good grief, all this food requires more than 2 sauces. I think most Chinese places have this posture. Weird. They did leave out my steamed rice with my beef fun chow .... I didn't really want it anyways. This was my first time having beef fun chow - it was enjoyable/ flavorful. I loved the hot sauce! Gave the dish the extra kick I prefer whenever I eat Chinese food.

The best egg rolls in Birmingham and great customer service. This is great for takeout so not worried about the ambience.

If you don't like egg rolls but you haven't had the egg rolls here, then you don't really know if you like egg rolls. These are fresh! It's said by those who know that these are as good as those of Birmingham's first Chinese restaurant, the legendary Joy Young's. I've been coming here for over forty years JUST for the egg rolls. 3 for $5.45. I would strongly suggest you stick to take out here. This place started as take out only with no a la carte menu. They just had dinners for groups as in Dinner for 2, 4 etc. Then it was known for the huge portions of mandarin style Chinese American and even more well know for the impatience and brusqueness of the owner-operator. Not much has changed as far as the service goes. You should know what you want and don't ask any questions. They don't like questions. They don't serve ice water. Don't ask. They added a large dining room several years ago, but it's not welcoming- and DO NOT use the restroom here. You have been warned. It really has all the charm of a hot dog stand. Today, (late October 2022) only 6 tables out of ~20 had the chairs on the floor. It's not really fair for me to review the food here as I don't like this style of Americanized "Chinese" food. It reminds me of what we thought Chinese cuisine was in the 1960's. What was that brand of chicken chow mein your mother could buy in a CAN and warm it up on the night she ran out of Hamburger Helper? Ok-That's probably an exaggeration, as any restaurant surviving this long has to be doing something right besides their sublime egg rolls. I really can't recommend anything other than the egg rolls here. I usually regret ordering anything other than the egg rolls. I haven't ordered the family dinner in many years. Why 5 stars? Because the egg rolls are as real as it gets! Come for the egg roll, but don't eat them here. Eating them in your car in parking lot does me just fine.

The Chop Suey Inn has been on my radar for a while now. One of my Chinese friends recommended it. I respect his knowledge of Chinese cuisine, and not just because he's speaks the language. He told me this was the original Chinese restaurants in Birmingham, and they do a nice job on some traditional dishes. He also added that it was cheep. First impressions is the restaurant is much larger then it appears from the outside. It is a no frills, counter-order style restaurant. The decor is very dated, and it reminded me of my childhood. My mom and dad used to drag us to places like this. They were very simple, family-run places. The parents were typically first generation immigrants who worked hard to make a better life. They were not sophisticated restaurants; more like the Chinese version of the short-order grill. My grandfather cooked in a place like this in St. Louis. We affectionately referred to it as the "takee outee". So, David L and I stopped by for lunch on Friday. David ordered the Shrimp and Broccoli from the lunch menu. It was a huge portion, and David said it was okay but nothing special. I ordered the Beef Chow Fun (spicy) from the regular dinner menu. Again the portion was huge. I thought it was above average. The flat noodles had the right texture and overall the dish had a nice flavor. I appreciated the is dish was not too greasy from the stir-fry oil. My curiosity was worth the visit.

They were steady but there was still a table available for us to sit. The service was incredibly friendly and efficient. We both got the lunch sesame chicken with soup and added on an egg roll. The sodas are in bottles but not overpriced at $2.50 each. The total was $38 not including tip for two of us which, in 2026, is reasonable. I got the hot and sour soup and my husband got the egg drop. I didn't try his but he said it was wonderful but the hot and sour may have been the best I've ever had. It had just the right amount of kick, the mushrooms were big and fresh and perfectly cooked, and it was steaming hot! The egg roll was fantastic, and if you are a hot mustard fan definitely ask for a ramekin instead of the packet. It's super hot and made my nose run but the flavor was incredible. The sesame chicken had very light breading, was juicy, large in portion and piece size and all white meat. I think I managed one bite of fried rice before I was full but it was cooked perfectly. Some of the reviews complained about the lack of music playing or art on the walls but truly the friendly service more than makes up for it; I don't go out to eat to listen to their background music, anyway. We will make a point to come back any time we are in the area.

My moo goo gai pan had barely any chicken in it. There were huge chunks of vegetables and it was way too starchy. It was like they were trying to compensate for the lack of protein in it. Hate to leave the negative review, but I need to warn people that they're using filler food to complete the orders and charging more. What's not cool anywhere these days is paying more and getting way less than just a few years ago. All of us are working hard to earn money and it just feels so disappointing to not get what you pay for, especially when you're paying more than you used to. I don't know who to blame for this. If I wanted a carton of vegetables I would have eaten a frozen bag for $2.50 tonight.
