I've been hearing lots of good reviews of Black Pearl. They lived up to the hype. My King Pao Veggies were delicious. The meal comes with 2 spring rolls and rice. The egg drop soup was also really. It was really worn the wait. The cashier was very friendly! The wait for the good wasn't very long. The music was very relaxing so I didn't mind waiting at all. Pay attention to the hours. My family and I got a 2 hour estimate wait time for Cracker Barrel on Thanksgiving and we stumbled here instead. I was very skeptical since it's a small hole in the wall and I'm a Chinese food snob with a good pulse on the bham food scene .. surely if I haven't heard of it.. it's probably not good? I was wrong! Everything was so fresh and top notch. Of course the dishes on the menu are of the Americanized variety but it was delicious . This place is quite good. I had the drunken noodles and spicy chicken. I had no idea that it was primarily take out when I went. They have one table and that's it. The prices are kind of high for what it is. I know, I know, supply chain and inflation. I get it but spending $15 on an entree seems a bit high all things considered. Also, they charge a credit card fee, which more places are doing but spending $20, roughly with tip and fee, for take out seems crazy. I stopped by here during a food tour and fell in love with the Thai Red Curry Chicken. After a week, I was finally able to make it back. This time, I tried the Thai Red Curry Shrimp. It was full of shrimp and the red curry was just as delicious as I remembered it. Spicy with a little sweet. I got there around 1:30 and had just beat the lunch crowd. The lunch comes with 2 sides + entree + steamed/fried rice. I chose ginger salad, hot and sour soup, steamed rice. Everything was delicious. Hot tea is green, aromatic and inspires calm. The aroma of the won ton soup arrived to the table before it did. The fresh parsley was a nice touch and unexpected to a very pleasant soup. Don't rush through it; savor the flavor of the broth even after you finish the won tons. The General Tso's Chicken dish is delish. Order it if you have a penchant for heat. This dish delivers the heat as advertised; it's not for lightweights. While there are considerable meat portions, I found more than acceptable empty batter portions on the plate. Just move them aside. The glaze/sauce did not have the overly thick viscosity as you might see at other establishments. I found the sauce to be welcoming. The steamed rice was perfect. Not mushy or clumpy and each grain held its own integrity. Service was prompt and attentive. There is a concerted effort to set the tone for Asian ambiance. Tonal piano music on the sound system, but it was drowned it some by the soda fountain cooling system. Brown and black color schemes are a mainstay and pleasantly accented with paintings, pictures, and pottery. I'd really like to try the Thai Noodles next time. For the szechuan chicken, the quality of the chicken was terrible; it was like soggy pork skin. It was barely even edible because of how chewy it was. So good! We had a take out order after a long day and it was for sure the best part of our day! We don't live very far from Black Pearl and when my husband arrived home with the food, it was still steaming hot! The house fried rice was exactly what my husband was wanting, full of vegetables and meats. Of course, he had to top it off with yum yum sauce which was quite tasty given that I do not ever touch the sauce. Kung Pao chicken was good and spicy and I especially loved the diced zucchini in it. This place has been consistent over the years for its freshness and portion size. Our lunch order included hot and sour soup for me. I'm a soup snob and I'm very particular about how it tastes. I love their soup! It was hot and yummy. The crab Rangoon were crispy, light and fresh (YUM)! My entree was the Mongolian beef! Again, my favorite dish so it's my go to. Here my onions were sautéed perfectly where they didn't taste like I was biting a raw onion (it has happened more times than I care to mention), the beef was yummy and the portion size was definitely nice for a lunch entree. Food was prompt and the owner is always personable and smiling. If you're looking for good Chinese food, give this place a shot! You wont be disappointed read more

I always order this dish as it is hard to get it right, but if you do you know your Chinese food and your a spice Master. Mapu Tofu is from Sichuan Province of China most places are fearful of spices or they overdue it and it's horribly spicy or greasy. These guys got it right very nice, I mix in my white rice and it so dang good! These guys have got what it take the rest of the menu is easy so I'm sure you'll love this Mom & Pop shop. Black Pearl has not flown but soared to number 1 on my list of Asian food in The HAM. I love that they have Chinese and Thai food on the menu because I love Thai and the hubby can't handle the heat. Lol. The menu is extensive, it's basically a book. They have traditional fare but also food for the more adventurous eater...think crispy intestines. Yum! We started out with crab Rangoon because we have to try them everywhere. These were the best I've had. Ever. I suggested Happy Family for my hubby. He was very glad he listened to me. He loved it. I loved it too. I had to try the Drunken Noodle because I really love it and while it can't compete with the one I love in Georgia, it was still very good. Cozy atmosphere, well decorated. It's hard finding a good chinese takeout spot, but Black Pearl would rate a bit better than most of the places in Bham I've tried so far. Today was my first time trying Black Pearl. I ordered the salt and pepper squid, beef and broccoli, egg drop soup and steamed dumplings. The squid was good but did become a little dry to eat for the whole meal. Wish it had come with a sauce or something. The beef and broccoli was good. The egg drop soup was alright. I liked how it wasn't too salty but I felt it could use some more egg drops in there. Steam dumpling was good but the stuffing had a slight sweet taste. For some, they may enjoy this but for me, it turned me off as I typically don't like eating meals that are sweet. Weird I know. Typically enjoy sweet tastes for desert. Again, this is more personal preference. Oh and the fried rice that came with the meal was actually fried rice and not that weird yellow rice that some of these other places have been servicing. Overall I would say a 3.5 to 4 star so I just gave it a 4 on the rating. Would I order here again? Sure. Would I say this is my all time fave chinese takeout place? Idk. read more

Third time getting to go from black pearl. First two times i really enjoyed and it was the best take out chinese i could find this side of birmingham. This order though my go to hot and sour soup was disgusting. I've gotten it all times ive ordered from black pearl so i know how it's supposed to taste. It tasted very off like there was some cleaning liquid like bleach in it. I smelled it and it definitely smells like some type of cleaning chemical. The space itself is very peaceful and calm. The woman who took our order was very kind. We ordered two lunch plates and loved that they came with two egg rolls (well, one spring roll and one egg roll). They were hot and crisp and tasted fresh. Maybe a tad under seasoned but nothing a dip in sauces wouldn't fix. The fried rice has a unique flavor (star anise? 5 spice?) that was the standout of the plate. We got two combos that included Mongolian beef with Sesame Chicken on one and General Tso's on the other. Tasty! The only downside was the Crab Rangoon. I like my wrappers crispier and my filling less sweet. Just a preference thing. All said, if I was in the area, I'd eat here regularly for the kind service and fresh food.
