The staff were very nice and explained a few of the food items and what they really enjoyed. The wait time wasn't long at all, only 15 minutes. There are multiple versions of Mr. Chin's, this is the largest and it's inside and even larger building that has a huge Chinese grocery store. The restaurant itself is also fairly large with a lot of seating a few TVs and a nice dark-wall ambience. In the past, I've had Gen. Tso's chicken with fried rice, which I highly recommend, but today I wanted to do something different so I went with Kung pow chicken, which ads nice fresh vegetables and peanuts to a spicy chicken mix. It's a bit less sweet than General Tso's. I also had egg drop soup which was pleasant and mild as an appetizer. I might want a bit more rice delivered with my meal, my friend today asked for a second rice serving with his dish, and mine was a little short on the very pleasant fried rice. We had terrific service from our waitress, she was helpful and attentive and friendly. After your meal explore the grocery store. Review for those with Celiac or other Gluten Restrictions: We tried Mr. Chen's based recommendations that they were able to make Gluten Free dishes and my husband has missed Chinese food since finding out he had Celiac. The setup is a little unusual as it is a restaurant within a grocery store, but once you're inside it is very nice and you can't tell that you're in a market. When we informed him of my husband's need for gluten free dishes, our waiter immediately and confidently showed us what could be made Gluten Free on the menu (pretty much anything not fried or with lo mein noodles). When I ordered something with gluten the waiter immediately told me it could not be made gluten free, which we appreciated even though my husband is the one with celiac and I don't have to eat GF. Gluten free dishes were brought out first with the waiter confirming them to be GF when he put them on the table. GF beef and broccoli and GF pork fried rice were both excellent- probably some of the best beef and broccoli we've ever had, GF or not. I also very much enjoyed the Chicken Lo Mein. That like order bar-b-que and not getting bar-b-que sauce. We didn't enjoy the food. The honey chicken was dry. You didn't taste any honey. Fire Chinese food. Service is always very good and the ambiance is nice. The prices are pretty expensive for dinner, but the portions are huge. Really great unassuming Chinese food! My husband and I popped in for a quick weeknight dinner and we're not disappointed. Our server was friendly and attentive, and I'm so thankful for his recommendation to try the chicken with black bean sauce because I never would've thought to choose it myself, and the flavor was out of this world! Portions were huge. My husband got general Tso's and we shared an egg and spring roll. You walk in through "Hometown" an incredible Asian grocery store-- it is enormous with an amazing variety of items - fresh, frozen, produce and much more, and we were sad we didn't have time to explore it all (plan for extra time if you want to go shopping because there is a lot to see!) but we will definitely come back for that. Mr Chen's entrance is from the grocery story and it's such a nice surprise-- it's large, clean, and has cool modern decor. We were there on a quiet night and were seated right away. The server was so nice and the food came out quickly. It was just me and my daughter so we got dumplings, chow fun, and sizzing tofu- it was all so good and we had more than enough for dinner for two nights. Mr. Chen's seems to be a popular spot for Asian families; the place was packed around noon on a Sunday! My group of 4 visited soon after they opened, and were quickly seated and served. The waiter was helpful in answering our questions about their dishes. We got four separate dishes: a stir fried green bean, mapo tofu, beef chow fun, and a pork dish (in garlic sauce). The tofu and pork were very saucy, and the green bean was nicely seasoned. I wish the beef chow fun had more flavor, but we added hot sauce, which was a great topping! They don't have house made hot oil, but a generic chili sauce. Most dishes also come with rice; they'll give you a large bowl to share. Atmosphere: Mr. Chen's is located in the Hometown Supermarket in Homewood. We ordered for pickup, so we didn't get a chance to experience Mr. Chen's sit-down environment. Service: We ordered on their website and noticed that the one of the menu options we wanted, the Sauteed String Beans, was not available online. Shortly after placing our order, we called to see if they could include the String Beans and they were happy to add it to our order. Our order was ready promptly, and we had no problems with picking it up. Food: We ordered the Crab Rangoons (A3), Twice Cooked Spicy Pork (P14), Sauteed String Beans (V5), Cumin Beef (B14), and the Szechuan Beef Stew Noodle Soup (N1). The Crab Rangoons came with 8 rangoons, and they had the perfect balance of crispiness on the outside and creaminess on the inside. The string beans met our expectations but did not wow us since it lost its fresh texture and flavor from being in a pickup order. The Twice Cooked Spicy Pork was very flavorful and had a unique heat from the spices. We wished that the pork was a bit more crispy, but once again, the softer pork may have been the result of eating it take-out. The Cumin Beef was thin, tender, and well-seasoned. We appreciated that the beef was the centerpiece of the dish and that the proportion of meat and vegetables was reasonable. The cumin also wasn't too overpowering, which we have experienced when ordering this dish at other Chinese restaurants. Lastly, the Szechuan Beef Stew Noodle Soup was rather salty so we had to water it down. Additionally, it tasted more like instant spicy beef soup, but there was a generous amount of soft beef in the soup. Overall: We were satisfied with our food from Mr. Chen's and can imagine it being better if eaten fresh at the restaurant. Came here for dinner Sunday night after searching online for a place that served dumplings. Saw some really yummy pictures and was sold! We walked in to a smaller seating area and immediately commented on how good it smelled in there. I mouth started watering immediately. We were shown to a table by a nice waiter who gave us a VERY extensive menu (if you're looking for a variety of adult drinks, though, this isn't the spot). After scanning the menu we settled on dumplings for an appetizer, beef noodle soup, and dry fried shrimp. The dumplings come either steamed or fried, we went with steamed, and they were PHENOMENAL. Sometimes dumplings can be bland but these lacked nothing. Perfectly cooked, flavorful, sauce was on point; I had to make sure to pace myself to make sure I wasn't hogging all of them. The soup was amazing too. Extra large, tender meat, yummy veggies, and a bursting broth. My only complaint is that I wish it had a little more noodles, but I can never have enough of those so I'll let that slide. The pan fried shrimp came out in such a cool little set up, similar to Mexican fajitas they were steaming and still cooking on the pan with a flame underneath. Super cool. And it tasted just as good as it look. Chock full of spice and flavor with a good bit of rice on the side. I will say though, if you're sensitive to spice I would recommend trying something else or seeing if they can tone it down. I pride myself in my love of spicy food and even I broke a little sweat! Our whole meal wasn't even $50 and we had left overs (which if you're dining with someone like myself and my friend, it's rare that food is left on plates!). So you get a lot of bang for your buck! For Red Pearl fans this is a good option. Also attached to a grocery store Mr Chen's offers an authentic Chinese environment with friendly service and good food! The Ambiance is pleasant and spacious so you can have easy conversation. I wish we took pics of food but we dug in too fast. My dad got combo fried rice with large shrimp and tender meats. My husband and I got spicy cauliflower with chicken bean curd w cilantro. It was a great combo! This place was delicious. The service was friendly and the king pao chicken, dumplings, fried rice , egg rolls and mei fun (rice noodles) are tasty. They seemed to be following the same precautions most restaurants are now when dealing with COVID 19 and do offer dine in along with takeout or delivery. The place was clean and well managed. I chose takeout and the process was seamless and the staff patient and friendly. They also have various boba teas and if you have to wait for your order you can pop over to the market right next door and check out some amazing Asian and multi cultural offerings. All in all two thumbs up though I do wish their utensils and packaging was a little more earth friendly. I will definitely visit here again. read more
