We were at a program at MDC and needed someplace nearby for dinner. And there was this Chinese restaurant. Truthfully, the food is very old-style Cantonese, freshly prepared and delicious. My husband had a dinner combo - beef in spicy garlic sauce. It came with a bowl of egg drop soup (a bit too muich corn starch) and an eggroll (he loved it). The dish also came with fried rice and loads of vegetables. I had the house special - seafood tofu pot. It came out steaming in the cutest little pot. Lots of tofu triangles, shrimp, fish, cuttle fish, and fake crab along with vegetables and the most delicious mushrooms. served with steamed rice. This will make two meals, at least. Yes the name is so generic you think this place is for the uninitiated. However, this is a seriously good Chinese restaurant for people in the know. Just look at those trendy Shanghainese kids who somehow ended up at UM sharing the hot pot in their Valentino athleisure outfits! They could be eating at Komodo every night if they wanted. But instead, they come here because this is a true taste of home. Just focus on the menu in Chinese. Ignore the other one in English and Spanish with the "classics." I recommend highly the stewed pork belly, Dan Dan noodles, the salt pepper mixed seafood, the eggplant with minced pork, the bok choy in oyster sauce, salt and pepper pork ribs, the beef pot with chilies, the king fish with green onions, beef with pickled mustard leaves, fried dumplings and wash it all down with Tsing Tao beer. If you are living or even visiting Miami which is an area bereft of suitable Chinese food options, and you are craving for Chinese food, Chop Suey is the bee's knees - it's the best! My friends and I love their food and we come here almost every weekend! The restaurant is a decent-sized place near Little Havana, comprising of 2 sections, with bigger round tables towards the back of restaurant for bigger groups. The service is quick. We always get seated immediately and given menus to look through. Here they serve 2 different menus: 1. Chinese food menu, and 2. Americanized Chinese dishes menu, the true gem is in the first menu that is in Chinese and partially in English. They also serve hotpot here, however that is not my favorite. The food is flavorful and comes out quick. Here I have some recommendations for you: - chilled cucumber in sesame oil (涼拌黃瓜) - excellent appetizer - fried green bean (乾煸四季豆) - eggplant with fish-flavor sauce (魚香茄子) or fish flavor sauce/pork (魚香肉絲) - spicy fish (水煮魚) - spicy chicken (辣子雞) or da pan ji (大盤雞) - mapo tofu (麻婆豆腐) - three-cup chicken (桃園三杯雞) - salt and pepper squid (椒鹽魷魚) - sweet and sour fish (糖醋魚片) - salted egg pumpkin (鹹蛋金瓜) They serve very authentic Szechuan cuisine, not the fusion style. It is now owned by a Professor at University of Miami (UM) when he took over the restaurant from a Cuban owner many years ago. That is the reason you can still find many Cuban customers having Cuban food here. Even the Chinese waitress here can speak Spanish! They also offer lunch box delivery to UM during weekdays at a very cheap price (only $5 for a box if you order for a week and the portion is huge!), which is perfect for student like me. The vibe of the restaurant is really nice and great for a group dinner out. The food is reasonably priced with good portion. The waitresses are extremely courteous and attentive. It's so well flavored and the portions are very generous. I ordered the honey chicken lunch special and it was obvious that it was made fresh. I pulled the bread away from the chicken to see how much chicken was inside and was pleasantly surprised to see a good amount of chicken unlike the usual Chinese restaurant with mostly breading and hardly any chicken in their honey chicken. The food tasted below average but because there are not many options during the COVID 19 pandemic we mistakenly gave them a try. My husband ordered from this place, spent $57 bucks on drinks, soup and two plates. Wayyyy too much in my opinion but that wasn't the problem. The issue I had was a few bites into my Szechuan chicken was a chunk of metal from one of those metal dish sponges you use to clean off a mess that has been around entirely too long. This is low-key one of the best Chinese restaurants in Miami. This is authentically cooked Szechuan food. If you are unsure of what to order let me make a few suggestions. My personal favorites here are the chilled cucumbers for an appetizer. For the main course, try the eggplants in fish sauce, the hot and spicy fish pot, or the salt and pepper ribs. Their Americanized Chinese food is about standard. Nothing special here but it is done very well. You can also order bubble tea which is very good. If you bring enough people and are interested in cooking your own food, you can try the hot pot. Many Chinese people frequent this restaurant and you will see them eating here. The "secret" menu is only secret because it is mostly written in Chinese, though if you ask, you'd probably get an explanation (or, in my case, go with someone who can read and speak Chinese!). Their strengths and weaknesses lie in the very fact that they're authentic; you're not going to get your deep fried battered pork/chicken slathered in some sauces when you order from the secret menu, you're going to get a very Szechuan style dish with the spice to match. Others have recommended their spicy fish, and their 3 cup chicken, I agree with them wholeheartedly! My most recent visit I went the food was very bad, either the cook is new and have no idea how to make the Chop Suey house/ Nicaraguan style, or the quality just went down.. We typically go to Canton when we are down here, but this time we decided to get some take out and take it back to my grandmothers house. This was the closest place and had good reviews so we gave it a shot. We ordered fried rice, vegetable lo mein and some moogooguypan, they said it would be ready in 20min but probably took longer like 30-40min as I had to wait a while once we got there. The place was very busy with takeout orders and they also have a few tables for dining in. I don't mind waiting if the food is good but it was below average. Everything had the same brown sauce on it. I'm use to moogoo having a different white style sauce. It did not taste like moogoo at all, lo mein barely had any vegetables and used the same exact sauce from the moogoo. Egg rolls tasted frozen. Only decent thing was the fried rice.
