EDIT: I have raised my review to 3 stars based on the fantastic customer service I received after I posted my review. The owner was not only open to hearing my criticism, but followed up on my complaints. He walked me through step by step what had happened, and said they are making tangible steps to improve the process. Based on this customer service, I will try the store again, with hopes that the improvements have been made. -- I bought a goat leg a year or so ago, and it was expensive, but I was okay with spending more for quality, and didn't have an issue. I recently came in to buy some more goat meat... I needed 2 lbs, but they only had 3 and 5 lbs packaged and that's all they were willing to sell, already packaged, already cut meat. I should have walked away then but I didn't. I bought the already packaged and already cut "bone in" meat. I've never before bought cut meat that was bone in, and when buying leg meat not stew meat, it's just plain weird. I am willing to pay more for quality, but I didn't get quality. The meat I bought was 1 lbs of bone, not usable for what I needed. So in reality I ended up paying not $13.99/lb but $48.55/1 lb and 13 ounces, a ridiculous price. I also feel a bit cheated, since when I weighed the meat it home, it was short by a good 1 lbs from what the package claimed. Now if the meat was good quality, that would be one thing. But the thing that really bothered me, and caused me to write this review, was the clear lack of care that went into butchering the meat. It clearly was not butchered at all, but sawed through, bone and all, into chunks. Bone dust was all over the meat, meaning I had to carefully rinse each piece to get off as much bone dust as possible. I know how to butcher meat, and should have done it myself, but this is just unacceptable from any place calling itself a butcher shop, let alone at these prices. read more

I was a big fan of this place but they've sold me and my mother rotten chicken on 3 occasions (twice it was boneless thigh meat and once a whole chicken). We won't be going there anymore. On 2 of the 3 occasions we got a refund but it required going back to the store, which is a pain. My mother actually lives 1.5 hrs away, I'm only 25 mins. Now they post their return policy and satisfaction policy in the store. The satisfaction policy is vague but I sense they're visible bc they've been seeing rotten meat to a lot of folks (just read the Yelp reviews). The other interesting thing about the newly posted policies is not all the meat is organic. They clearly state they try their best to source organic lamb and beef but it's not always possible. read more

Great place to get organic, non-GMO and most importantly humanely treated animals' meat. Apart from the sourcing of meat, the quality of meat is also great. They have options of marinated (great marination I.e. spicy but not hot) meats as well as deli meats. Their website has the option to order online and pick it up later. The prices are competitive to other organic,non-GMO and humanely treated options. I have not seen any butcher shop so neat and clean. Meat is neatly packaged which for me means (hopefully) no waste. I have their yearly membership that gets you 5% off on any order. I would definitely recommend this place to friends and family. read more

I have been using Chops and Steaks for the last year or so. During this time the majority of what my Fiancée and I purchased has been Chicken. I haven't experienced any problems in that regard and I will most likely continue to patron Chops and Steaks in that capacity. However, over the year there has been a few times that I have ordered a steak, generally ribeye at close to 30 dollars a pound that were improperly cut. They fell apart on the skillet and didn't have a pleasant presentation. During my last visit I saw a customer come in wanting to have a BBQ for some friends. This person attempted to purchase several different items which ultimately were not available and where was also confusion regarding the difference between flank steak and skirt steak. I once again, disregarded this interaction as a failure to plan by the customer and had a hard time believe that a butcher shop was unable to provide what I always believe to be standard cuts of meat. Before I continue I will add that I have yet to find a Halal butcher that has been able to provide me with what I want so the following is not a symptom of Chops and Steaks alone and I am struggling to find any butchers similar to what I was accustomed to in South Florida. Unlike the previous customer I mentioned, I wanted to make sure that I was as prepared as possible for an upcoming BBQ I was having. I went so far as so download cutting specifications which included what part of the beef should be used, the direction of the cuts, how it should be cleaned etc. I was unfamiliar with the English translations of this cut of meat but with the extremely detailed instructions, I figured it would be self explanatory. I called ahead several days before and even e-mailed the instructions so that they could order in the rump cap / top sirloin from the distributor if needed. The day before the BBQ I called in to make sure that everything was in order and I was surprised to hear that there was still confusion and uncertainty regarding this order. Finally, someone told me that they would be able to provide me with the cut and that it was a "rib eye" eye at a cost of just over $27 per pound. This sounded extremely odd by I at first accepted it and then went online to do more research. Within 5 minutes I discovered that not only was is not a ribeye cut but that the sirloin cuts tend to be about 1/2 the cost of the ribeye cut. While I stress the fact that I do not this mistake was malicious or a play at inflating the sale price, I am however disturbed nonetheless that a sirloin, borderline rump cut could be confused for ribeye. Context: I am of Brazilian decent where BBQs are a focal point of family life and from a very young age we are thought how to buy, cook, and grill. It is very possible most people simply do not care nearly as much as I do, but for me, the inability of this butcher as well as others this past weekend to bring a little piece of home to NJ was really disappointing. read more

I've been going to Chops for the last few months for chicken as I find their lamb and steak prices pretty high. Today, however, my wife and I noticed a foul odor throughout the house and we narrowed it down to the chicken. I couldn't believe it was the chicken as we just bought it a few days ago. To my amazement another poster just had a similar experience for the same time frame. It had such a rancid smell that we threw it out. I am planing on going back to get a refund and I will stick with Costco. I don't require halal but I liked the fact that they promoted themselves as clean, environment friendly, and organic. If I can only give zero stars. The idea of organic whole chicken cut up is great. Especially when it is cleaned. Ready to cook and worth the few extra dollars. I expected the liver and other internal parts to be missing and that's totally fine since we will not eat them anyway. Good business plan that needs to be appreciated. But then when I get home I can only find one leg. Are you selling one legged chickens or deliberately cheating your customers?? Then I question my naive judgement - 5 to 6 pound chicken can weigh about 2 3/4 pound after cleaning. I didn't put together the breast and thigh pieces to see whether they are full or already sold to another naive customer like me. Only God knows whether the chicken is fresh, it is organic, it is cut per halal guidelines and all the other words used possibly for marketing purposes only. Dear chops and steak, if you need to increase margin you have earn the trust of your customers and not by cheating them. You lost my business for ever. read more

Only Zabiha and Organic place in the area, little bit of a drive for us but so worth it. The first time I only bought the non-marinated burger patties to "try it out". Everyone was so impressed with the burgers but I didn't do ANYTHING to them! it was a great test, and Chops and Steaks passed with flying colors. read more

I have purchased a lot of meat from Chops and Steaks since it opened, the meat has been pretty good until recently. I bought 10 pounds of chicken thigh and it smelled so bad it was completely inedible. Luckily they gave me my money back completely when I brought the meat back, but they should not have sold it to me to begin with. read more

Fantastic place! Upon walking in, I was greeted by a man named Amjad. It was a rainy afternoon and Amjad's warmth and hospitality warmed me to my core. After placing our order, he asked if we would like to watch as they prepared our order in the back. Amjad even offered a recipe of his for the meat we were purchasing and texted it to my phone! The meat we purchased was absolutely delicious and reasonably priced.
