This review is for the one (same) item the three of us ordered so we may give it another try in a few weeks and update if our opinion changes. This place is located on the main stretch of the vert touristy and BUSY stretch in Tatamagouche. It's small - about a dozen tables - so expect to wait if you're coming during the obvious hours (lunch/supper). The three of us got the last table for 4 but it was squishy because the place was packed! Service is friendly and quick! We honestly came specifically for the chowder and didn't try anything else because we all planned a visit to the chocolate shop, the brewery and the winery. The soup was a really good sized portion for $14 and it was creamy - something that's often lacking when you order chowder. It comes with two pieces of baguette which is great to dip into the chowder. The only complaint would be is that the chowder really lacks the staples as advertised. We did find LOTS of shrimp in each bowl, but one of us got one rubbery scallop in our bowl where the other two had none. The fish was also very difficult to catch as it seemed very little made it into the bowls. Despite it being very busy, the service was prompt and the food came out fairly quickly. There was an event going on at the winery up the highway so it is possible the menu was rushed that day. Overall, for the price, I really don't have too much to complain about but it would be nice to find more fish in the chowder. Lots of street parking available and they have an extensive menu. Google/Facebook say closed Sundays, but call ahead because we came on a Sunday in the middle of November and they were definitely open. Worth a shot and the rest of the menu looked like it had some great options. read more

we ordered a Caesar Salad, two lobster rolls, a bowl of chowder, a crispy chicken burger, a beef liver dish I forgot the name. The waiting time after the order is about 40 to 45 minutes. there are two people next to us, ordered after us got their food first, I noticed they ordered fish chowders as well. It's a chowder in a medium size blue colour bowl. we got our other food first then after a while we got the chowder in a salad bowl, same bowl as our Caesar salad. It's a triangle shaped bowl. I thought they may run out of regular chowder bowl so I didn't say anything, then later on I noticed other customers got their chowder in a regular chowder bowl, with bread and butter. I didn't get butter. I didn't say anything because I don't want to my kids feel because we are only Asian people there so they gave us a salad bowl for a soup dish, maybe they think we can't tell the difference. Honestly I don't think my kids and husband even notice that. Back to food, the chowder is ok, not Good enough to name the restaurant based on this dish. Lack of flavour and fish and shrimp are tough, lots of potatoes not much of fish. I found one small scallops and one shrimp in the bowl. I don't think there is lobster meat in there. Maybe they think we are tourists but we go to Tatamagouche quite often because we have our camper near by about 10 minutes drive away. Probably won't be back, if we do, next time I got a special bowl or plate I will sure to ask Why. read more

Stopped in for a bowl of chowder as we drove through town on a particularly cold and rainy day in May. We were a few weeks ahead of the tourist season and the place was packed with locals, most of them enjoying the chowder. (yup, I'm the kind of gal who walks in and scopes out what everyone is eating before I order!) I followed suit and ordered a bowl and was very pleased with how big it was, the quantity of clams, haddock, shrimp & scallops in my bowl and the thick creamy well seasoned soup. With a little bit of fresh bread and butter it made for a very satisfying meal. My husband had the daily special, a beef and cheese wrap with french fries. It had plenty of onions and peppers and was almost like a philly cheesesteak. He was pleased that it was nicely seasoned and mentioned if we were ever back this way he would definitely order it again. Service was quick and pleasant. Could have used a little music, and we felt a bit like everyone was staring at the out of towners since we were seated right in the middle of the room and clearly most everyone there knew each other. Stopped by for lunch on a chilly fall day. The business is located in an old home which has been refurbished as an eating establishment seating about 24 people. The decor is modern. The menu items are what I would call traditional local. Burgers, fish & chips, salads, pasta & chowder. The usual drinks & alcohol were also available. We opted for the clam chowder, the full bowl was quite substantial. As I peered over to other tables, the other dishes looked very good. Price was very reasonable for two people with a drink. Service was great and food came out fast. We noticed some fresh baked muffins & rolls, but opted to leave them there this time. read more

We came there on Thursday evening, it was 6:25pm (restaurant should close at 7pm). We were a group of 10 people (business dinner) and 3 others young girls came at the same time. After knocking the door (because the restaurant was already closed) the waitress came to us and said " sorry we just closed the kitchen ". I concluded, they don't need to sell or do business. First time at this place and even though its was a Sunday, it was busy. Service was fast and friendly. Decided to go with the Turkey Dinner special and it was REALLY! Delicious and home made tasting. They even make their own cranberry sauce, not that canned crap! Next time the chowder, after all the place is named for it. Will let you know. read more

Okay part three folks. First of all just saw a kid with an aerosmith type or something mullet with blonde highlights rock on kid haha. Huge portions. Our server was good the food was good and everyone seemed pretty happy with it, most of us couldnt even finish our food thats how big the portions were. We seated ourselves. Funny story our waitress was wearing a shirt from the tatamagouche beer place small world. I asked for ketchup she brought it "want more water? Worst meal in years.. 1 star for the good fries and pleasant waitress. How do you make haddock tough to eat? Perhaps thaw it in the microwave till it is cooked and then fry it. The mixed vegetables tasted like they had been in the freezer too long in an unsealed bag. The potatoes had no taste. What self respecting sea food restaurant would give single serving packets of Kraft tartar sauce. It is not that hard to make. read more

So after cottaging in the area for 45 years I finally decided to try the Chowder House. Quaint interior, quite nice actually. My mother and I ordered the chowder. What else would try in a place called the Chowder House? It was terrible. It wasn't hot and frankly tasted like it came out of a can with a few scallops thrown in to jazz it up. So disappointed, I couldn't finish it. I had coffee and a cinnamon roll after because the server said they were really good. They were ok. Mediocre coffee in a small diner style cup. My mother at first didn't want coffee then told the girl she changed her mind and would like a cup. She never got it. I'm giving it 2 stars because of the nice interior and because it's in Tatamagouche. Won't be going back. read more

The food was good but the restaurant was greatly understaffed. Waited for 10 minutes with someone else's dishes on our table. The people at the table next to us had the last customer's dishes on their table throughout their entire meal. 25 minutes after we ordered they came to tell us that they were out of what we ordered. read more

I've been here a few times and each time the wait is absurdly long and the food mediocre at best. I was there recently and our food was over an hour, despite being the only people not eating when sitting down. I watched other people busk the tables on the patio to sit because the servers were no where to be seen. Customers at tables were swapping jams and creams amongst their tables because again servers were nowhere to be seen to offer these. There was no apology. The one positive I can say that the hash browns are good but overall food was not worth it. Would recommend you go elsewhere in Tata, or do the Sandpiper in Pugwash. read more

The wait was long and I wish I could tell you the wait was worth it....it wasn't. Less than mediocre. The staff weren't overly interested in the customers and seemed eager to go home. I had the lobster roll which was stringy and small for the bun. My partner in crime had the bowl of chowder, and although the portion was big, she described it as slimy and only ate a quarter of the bowl. The beer from the local brewery was good. Overall, I'd suggest giving this restaurant a miss and heading to any of the other restaurants in town. Disappointed without a doubt. read more

Stopped on a motorcycle ride on route 6. Enjoyed the seafood chowder - cream base with chunks of lobster, scallops, shrimp and fish. Not much else on this stretch of road looked interesting enough to stop. The food at this place was good. read more

Great little restaurant. Come hungry and leave happy. Seafood chowder was just as expected, fantastic. Hippie beer was a pleasant hoppy compliment to the perfectly beer battered fish and chips. Would highly recommend if you are cruising along the coast to the PEI ferry. read more

We have been vacationing in Tatamagouche. Once we tried the seafood chowder, we were hooked. The blueberry pancakes were sooo good, i had them 4/5 visits. Within a week. Burger and fries - excellent. Breakfast specials- very good. Soup and sandwiches also very good. We thought the serving sizes were "just right" to "more than i can eat." The service was fast and friendly. We stopped for a late lunch, looked at the menu, I asked the girl behind the counter if they had seafood casserole, she said yes, it's just called something else "seafood bake", so we thought, why not. We went and sat outside, she saw us go out with the menu, she didn't bother coming out, after 10 minutes or more my husband had to go get her, she was on the phone. We both ordered the seafood bake, she said it came with rice and described it as really good with lots of spices such, ya, right. What it was was their seafood chowder in a shallow dish with some cheese tossed on top and baked, it was watery, not creamy, and the rice was horrible, dry, and clumped, we pointed it out, all she said was sorry, and left. When I went in to pay the bill, she didn't ask if everything else was ok, didn't offer to take a small amount off the bill (my plate was still full of the rice and mushy veggies), she just said thanks, so I asked, did you mention the rice problem to the chef at least, she said, oh yes, they're going to change it, I have no idea what that means.
