However, once you find it - depending on why you are there - it might not meet your expectations - at least if they are too high! The sleeping accommodations normally only have twin beds - in the colder months plan on your bedroom being cold - you might want to bring your own extra blankets or even an electric blanket and if you are very big at all - the showers tend to be extremely small. Now if you are going there to cook for an event - it's a huge kitchen and can almost be confusing - but there is one thing for sure - the kitchen area could use some updates - not everything works and not everything is clean, but I've had some very good memories in that kitchen! The other areas are less than spectacular as well, but it's most likely the event that brought you here and not the accommodations - so go with an open mind and enjoy the moments!

It's a few buildings down from the Amphitheater, so you can enjoy the evening symphony easily from the porch or terrace. Also, the entire staff was kind and helpful. They really tried to accommodate the guests, but there was this sense that these gals were quite fearful of screwing up. On the downside, the room was straightened up, but it didn't feel clean - especially post-pandemic clean. The room we stayed in had 1-1/2 bathrooms - both very small with no room to hold personal belongings. The shower experience was no better than you'd find at a campground. The amenities were cheap and never replenished, so we ended up buying shampoo, conditioner, and body wash at the plaza store. The floor wasn't level, evidenced by our roller bags rolling around on their own. The bed was way too soft and uncomfortable. There was no airflow in the room and there was no way to control the air conditioning. The windows were permanently shut. Despite the Spencer's charm and history, we won't be staying here again.

It has its own private entrance and porch, and it's located right next to the Amphitheater. One of our favorite parts of the week is sitting on the porch in the evening and listening to the concerts without ever leaving the room. We still love the Athenaeum for its history, charm, and unbeatable location. Being able to purchase our Chautauqua gate passes through the hotel is another nice perk. They're printed and waiting for us when we check in, making arrival quick and easy. So why did I lower my rating from five stars to four? Housekeeping has changed noticeably since our first visit. During our week-long stay, the room was never actually cleaned. Towels were replaced and the trash was emptied, but the floors weren't cleaned, the bed linens weren't changed, and the room was never refreshed beyond the basics. We also ran into a maintenance issue. Although the shampoo, conditioner, and body wash dispensers in the shower were full, none of them worked. We ended up buying shampoo and conditioner from the Plaza store and relying on the bar soap provided by the hotel. Neither issue ruined our stay, and we'll absolutely be back. But for a hotel of this caliber, I expect housekeeping and basic room maintenance to be better than what we experienced this year.

The room: peeling wallpaper, chipped paint, cracks in the floor and cracks in the ceiling, and floors so warped it's like a little skate park. The shower is small and dingy, also unlit. There's a light over the sink, but it's doesn't really reach the shower, especially with the shower curtain closed. The concert let out around 10:30, and we took a stroll around the grounds to skip rocks and look at constellations. When we got back to the hotel, bar closed. 11 on a Saturday night. Also no food to be had. Sunday morning continental breakfast was paltry at best. Even the coffee sucks, watery and tasteless. All this for the bargain price of about $400/night. For two of the crappiest double beds I've ever slept on. All that money is for the location.

The institution is a wonderful place to just walk around, enjoy the architecture, lectures, cooking demonstrations or church services. Bestor Plaza is the town square with some shops and restaurants around it. Once a week it also has an outdoor market and food trucks. You can walk around, it's a bit hilly here and there, but there are other options. Golf carts on smaller loops and shuttle busses on loops all around the institution. For the first time ever, Chautauqua Institution hosted a Naturalization Ceremony. 30 people from 18 countries got their citizenship after the Pledge of Allegiance to the USA. There were 500+ people watching the ceremony, most of them not family members; just people who wanted to witness this moving event.

There were also some food trucks and other vendors on the plaza today. What was very special today was a Naturalization Ceremony. It was the first time this has been done in the Institute. It was well attended, maybe 500-600 people. There were 30 new Americans, from 18 countries, who took the Pledge of Allegiance to the USA. The spectators were not family members, just people who wanted to witness this commitment by these 30 adults. It was beautiful and very moving. After this ceremony, I found out that most Naturalizations are often in a court house with few in attendance. The ceremony today had to be very, very special for the 30 new Americans. There was lots of applause! There are mini-buses and golf carts circling the grounds throughout the day, so getting around is very easy, if your walking is limited.

Our centerpieces were not elaborate at all, literally a vase refilled with rocks and branches and 4 glass candle holders with candle inside they had to hang 5 crystals from the branches and scatter refilled containers of gem table scatter. How that is elaborate I don't know. For such a godly woman, alot of lying and stretching of the truth keeps happening. I'm not going to keep going with this back and forth.
