This is one of the nicest rest areas we have been to. It's basically a visitor center and rest area…read morein one. There is lots of information inside on things to do in the area. I probably spent 30 minutes looking through the brochures here. They also have a bulletin board with events in the area but unfortunately it doesn't look like it gets updated . The majority of the flyers were from July and it is now October . It would have been nice to see current events and things happening in the area . They have vending machines and they even have a microwave for people to use, which is unique and very thoughtful. There is a button you can push inside if you need the police, so that helps with a feeling of safety and I did see a red and white sheriff's vehicle parked there with two deputies inside on my visit. There are lots of tables outside with chairs and a grassy area where you can take your pets. Plus the view of the water is very beautiful, especially right now with all the fall foliage.

Pithole is an interesting excursion, especially if it follows a visit to Drake Well…read more Pithole was formed after "oil strikes at nearby wells in January 1865 prompted a large influx of people to the area ... most of whom were land speculators. The town was laid out in May 1865, and by December was incorporated with an approximate population of 20,000. At its peak, Pithole had at least 54 hotels, 3 churches, the third largest post office in Pennsylvania, a newspaper, a theater, a railroad, the world's first pipeline and a red-light district 'the likes of Dodge City's.' By 1866, economic growth and oil production in Pithole had slowed. Oil strikes around other nearby communities and numerous fires drove residents away from Pithole and, by 1877, the borough was unincorporated." (Wikipedia) The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Today, it is an empty field, though with some signs around the grounds explaining what buildings would have been where. There is a visitor center, but it's barely open any more - I assume due to budget cuts, which is sad, as the story is so very interesting. Hopefully someday someone will take some interest in this old site and restore it to Drake Well Museum standards!

Washroom are large and the water bottle dispensers are an underrated resource. Prices for food and drink are very high, and be prepared for the high volume of people is you are visiting on a weekend. However, this place is well worth a visit.

Postcards to pick up. More brochures offering ideas for a lazy Wednesday afternoon. This organization is terrific. They offer tours to people. They have volunteers trained to answer most any question a local or tourist can throw at them. Next time you are downtown, pop in here for a few minutes. Its bound to be worth your time and effort.

One thing they could do a bit better with this festival is communicating when events are changed/postponed/cancelled. I highly recommend buying the iced wine chocolates, and I regret only having bought one tiny box of them, because they're absolutely delish. This was our third stay at the Athenaeum, and we've now spent the last two years in Suite 8. We've…read morealready booked our return for 2027. Suite 8 has become our favorite room. It has its own private entrance and porch, and it's located right next to the Amphitheater. One of our favorite parts of the week is sitting on the porch in the evening and listening to the concerts without ever leaving the room. We still love the Athenaeum for its history, charm, and unbeatable location. Being able to purchase our Chautauqua gate passes through the hotel is another nice perk. They're printed and waiting for us when we check in, making arrival quick and easy. So why did I lower my rating from five stars to four? Housekeeping has changed noticeably since our first visit. During our week-long stay, the room was never actually cleaned. Towels were replaced and the trash was emptied, but the floors weren't cleaned, the bed linens weren't changed, and the room was never refreshed beyond the basics. We also ran into a maintenance issue. Although the shampoo, conditioner, and body wash dispensers in the shower were full, none of them worked. We ended up buying shampoo and conditioner from the Plaza store and relying on the bar soap provided by the hotel. Neither issue ruined our stay, and we'll absolutely be back. But for a hotel of this caliber, I expect housekeeping and basic room maintenance to be better than what we experienced this year.

I stayed at the Athenaeum July 19-25. Before arriving I called to inquire whether there would be a…read morehairdryer and iron in the room and was assured that there would be. It did not occur to me to ask whether there would be a mirror in the room, as I've never been in a hotel that didn't have one. When I found that, aside from the small bathroom mirror located far above my height, there was no full-length mirror in the room, I asked about this at the front desk. I was told that they would see if they had a mirror that could be installed. When nothing happened, I inquired again and was told that the hotel had no other mirrors. Apparently, some rooms have mirrors and some don't and this seems to be fully acceptable to the management of the Athenaeum. I got no apology and was, in fact, made to feel like my request was unreasonable. If I were managing the hotel, I would think it worthwhile to send a staffer to the nearest hardware or dollar store to purchase a full length mirror and install it in the $400 deluxe double room. Total cost: less than $20 and a half hour time. Furthermore, the prefab plastic shower stall lacked a grab bar or even a shower mat. Given the average age and mobility of guests at the hotel, this seems like an accident (and liability suit) waiting to happen. I tried sending this as feedback directly to the hotel, but could not get to a link or contact info that would have allowed me to do so.
