The building is old which is cool but seems a little grimy at the same time. I got the 2 dogs with fries and she just got a chili cheeses dog. The fries came out first and were decent. Then the dogs. Like others have said the chili isn't what you think of. Very sweet and tastes a lot like ketchup. Since on a dog not a big deal but don't expect your usual chili flavor. They also put sauerkraut on the dogs. Didn't know that and I do not like sauerkraut so hard to judge dog. As a transplanted Chicagoan, hot dogs are an art form to me. I ordered two hot dogs, great taste, the chili sauce brings an interesting twist to the flavor. Not a Chicago dog but very good and different. My wife ordered the burger and hot dog combo. She loved the dog, burger not so much. I took a bite and the taste was flat. Not a fan. The fries were amazing, hot and perfectly crispy. The staff is awesome. There was a group next to us that had I been the server I would have not been as friendly and cooperative. I started taking my nieces there when they were old enough, and last year my great-nephew had his first Chris' experience -- carrying on the tradition. I visited last week for only the second time since the beloved owner passed away, and something just felt different. The ambiance is still the same, and the staff remains wonderful -- Eleanor was as sweet and attentive as ever. But the food quality has noticeably changed. The food was decent but the portions were very small as far as the burgers go. I wouldn't be afraid to say the patties weigh less than a McDonald's cheeseburger. The hot dog was good and the onion rings were very good. The prices are very reasonable. The seating isn't ideal. Very small booths and I'm a bigger guy. This is Alabama's oldest family owned and operated restaurant. Dating back to May 1st 1917, it is absolutely steeped in history. It's still family run, now by the second and third generation of its namesake Christopher "Chris" Anastasios Katechis, an immigrant from a small island in Greece. The restaurant is located on historic Dexter Avenue. Dexter is where the Montgomery Bus boycott (1955-1956) started with Rosa Parks being arrested for refusing to surrender her seat to a white person. I then gave a healthy cash tip to our waitress friend, as did my entire party. So far so good, right? I keep my receipts. Always. The young lady, the youngest one working, with braids and a severe attitude, was working the cash register. Again. I keep my receipts. When I go through my weekend expenditures today, I find a "written in" addition to my payment. If she did that to every person paying with a card, she made a pretty good amount under the table. It was a few days after Christmas and we walked over to Chris' from our hotel enjoy all of the lights and decorations along the way. We were so fortunate to meet Gus (the Grandson of the original proprietor) who walked us through the history of the place and it's celebrity guests. He was jovial, knowledgeable, and proud of what his family has built. The food? Excellent. I really enjoyed the hot dogs Chris' way with mustard, onions, kraut and their chili sauce. Important caveat before I start: I don't love hot dogs That said, I have wanted to go to Chris' since I moved to Montgomery, and I recently found myself near Chris' during lunch time. So, I figured, why not? What I got: I went with the two-dog combo. I do wish I had gone for the hamburger and hot dog combo because the hamburgers my dining companions got looked good. But, I went all in on the hot dogs. I got them the Famous Chris way with the kraut and the chili. It was too much. It was messy and caused the bun to deteriorate. I needed a knife and fork to eat it. I think this is a less-is-more situation. I thought the flavor of the chili was good, and I do like sauerkraut. Just too much. My favorite part of the meal were the onion rings. They kindly let me get those with the combo in lieu of chips. I love onion rings, and these were perfect. Fresh, crispy batter with a nice soft onion interior. The location: The restaurant is cramped and the air is thick with the smell of fried food. You walk in and down a sort of narrow hallway. There are two small narrow rooms with booths and tables. The space is tight, but it has personality. I love the local, folk style art on the walls, the news write-ups, and other paraphernalia of a local business serving and existing in its community. Our group had a wonderful meal at Chris' Hot Dogs in Downtown Montgomery. We were welcomed as soon as we walked in by Theo the second generation of Chris Hot Dogs. He shared with us his father's story and the history of the restaurant, hearing about Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Elvis Presley and several American Presidents enjoying their hot dogs. Our server took our orders and our food came out of the kitchen minutes later. We couldn't decide between the hotdog and the fresh burger - Theo told us the meat is fresh daily, so we went with the hotdog and hamburger combo, which came with wonderful hot crinkle cut fries. The burger with cheese was good and so was the hotdog with mustard, onions, kraut and the chili sauce - yes the chili sauce which we were also served with a side for the fries. It's a good value for what you get. I will say the burgers are thin. They are tasty, but I wish there had been a little more substance.
