They were able to get it running and sharpened the blade the same day.

I confess I've passed this place hundreds of times without a second thought, but I finally stopped…read morein last week, and I'm glad I did. It's the textbook essence of a mom 'n pop operation, which means personal service by people who really care about treating you right, 'cause this is what they do. It's all they do. I rented a gas powered "jumping jack" compactor, to tamp down some decomposed granite. Brand new device. Worked like a charm. To be fair: because it's such a small place, they might not have *everything* you'd want. So, for example, I'd hoped to rent a vibrating plate compactor, but no luck. They also didn't have any wheelbarrows, which I needed. But the *do* have ladders, which I'll also be needing. So it's a bit hit-and-miss, selection wise. But the personal service is such that I just can't give 'em any fewer than 5 stars.

One year later I went back to this hardware store to find the solution for another project. Andy was so patient, knowledgeable, and spent time explaining tools to me. I was there for 15 minutes and only spent $0.12 to get the right thing. He could have easily tried to sell me things that I didn't really need considering my lack of knowledge in this field. I walked out the store all smiles and am just grateful that I have this cute little store in my neighborhood. Andy is like a grandpa that I don't have!

But another 30 years has gone by and you're still a business we can depend to be there for us!!! I love that a small, family business, that has products that we need and do not want to buy from big box stores exists for us. I don't think many people understand how important this is, to have a real person (not a corporation) to talk to and buy from, someone we can trust to be there for us. Again, congratulations!! Here are a few photos of the edger I purchased in 1990, still runs great!!

The office entrance is at the side of the building - you enter through the driveway and follow the painted arrows on the building. When you enter you come face to face with Dave. Oh, Dave, Dave, Dave. He is a Character. He's an older gentleman, extremely nice, and will talk your ear off while helping you. He's SUPER helpful and likes to smoke cigars while conducting business; believe me, the smoke is a small price to pay for getting to listen to this man talk. He is hysterically funny and is truly a nice guy. I got to hear the entire story about how his son is creating a website for him so he can sell lawnmower parts online. He has "parts they don't make anymore" so I imagine the site will do quite well once it's up and running. J & N has been at this same location for more than 50 years. It looks like there have been few changes since then - there's a computer on Dave's desk that he types at using a forceful hunt-and-peck method that gets the job done, but that is the only nod to modern technology. The entire place is piled high with random junk parts and equipment. His main business is lawnmower parts, but he services all types of outdoor power equipment. If you need some strange, esoteric lawnmower part you can't find, check J & N - if Dave doesn't have it, he probably knows who does. I came to meet Dave for his side business - he manages a few rental trucks for U-Haul. My saga began when I arrived at the local Budget rental facility to find out that (1) they decided NOT to honor my reservation and (2) the only vehicle they had available was a panel van. Apparently every truck was booked for some huge auction going on, and Budget decided to screw the little guys (i.e. the general public). I was moving a 2-bedroom apartment with a TON of furniture - not having a truck was NOT an option. We called the U-Haul 800 number and were shortly told to go see Dave. Dave's trucks were clean, well-cared-for, and he was very intent on making sure we understood everything involved with the rental agreement. He spoke to us like we were friends and made sure that we had everything we needed. The difference between J & N and Budget was staggering both in the degree of customer service and professionalism. J & N is definitely a "little guy" local business and has the kind of personalized customer service that you simply don't see anymore. Dave took a genuine interest in our story and in helping us get everything we needed. I would recommend this business for anyone who needs outdoor power equipment service, parts, etc., or anyone who needs a moving truck. Dave truly turned what was an awful day into a good one.
