It was very obvious he had a serious dental issue, likely an infection. Instead, we were seen by someone named Soha Hemmat, who introduced herself as a doctor, but based on this experience, I seriously question her competence. She spent less than two minutes examining my son. No thorough check, no concern, no effort. She dismissed everything as "just a virus," told us to brush his teeth and give him Tylenol, and walked out like the situation didn't matter. That was completely wrong -- and dangerously negligent. My son's fever continued, and his condition did not improve. We had to contact his actual doctor and take him back to be seen again just six hours later. He was properly examined and diagnosed with a clear infection, and immediately given antibiotics. This could have gotten much worse because of her careless and dismissive attitude. I have been coming to this office for four years and have always had professional experiences, which makes this even more disappointing. But this encounter was unacceptable. No parent -- especially one with a child who has special needs -- should be brushed off like this. This office seriously needs to address this situation. Either provide proper training or reevaluate who they allow to treat patients, because this level of incompetence and lack of care is not just unprofessional -- it's dangerous. Even though we only come in twice a year, the front desk often remembers our names, which is such a nice personal touch. I love how kid-friendly the office is -- TVs in the ceiling, headphones, sunglasses, shows the kids can choose, and stuffed animals available for kids who need extra comfort. They also have separate rooms for procedures for privacy and to help keep other kids from getting nervous. They offer sealants, different fluoride flavors, and of course the prize box at the end. They are fundamentally unhappy people, you can tell, when they greet you when they go through their scripted lines to get you moving as quickly as possible. A fake smile here to reassure the unwary. Toxic. It comes out in other ways too. If you ask too many questions, ask for alternatives, discuss what is happening, these are things that slow down the conveyor belt. These are absolutely not greeted with happiness, and can land you in hot water. This horrid, well polished treadmill will not give you the service your child deserves. Go elsewhere.

The final level of completely unprofessional and unethical behavior, however, came today when she texted to schedule a followup appointment to complete treatment. While texting back and forth to find a good time to come in, I asked if I could make a business suggestion. She asked what I meant, so with every intent on being helpful I mentioned her website address as it relates to how clients see it, "delmarpedo.com", in that "pedo" these days is mostly used as shorthand for pedophile. As she said I am the only one who ever pointed this out, I replied that it's likely because it is an awkward conversation and maybe she should check with a trusted friend. This was all it took to have her refuse to communicate with my children and me about follow up treatment. She made a point of telling me as of May, she would no longer serve Medi-Cal patients, I assume to shame me for having Medi-Cal at present and to assuage her own tender ego. When she recently gave up her own office to share space with another practice, I assumed it was that the rent was high and she didn't have enough clients to stay there which is why I mentioned the web address. Being the "pedo" dentist of Del Mar, might be an extra bad look these days with the Epstein Files in the media, so my bringing it up was done in the spirit of helping a business owner who might not have taken the connotation into account. As she clearly looks down on her Medi-Cal clients, she was unable to see me as someone who could help her. Unfortunately, with this continuous pattern of poor behavior, I don't think anyone can.

I didn't find out that she was out of network until our insurance claim for 4 cavities and 1 extraction got rejected due to incomplete information. She kept blaming it on our insurance not trusting her, but after reading reviews here, I'm guessing our insurance has her record of unnecessary procedures. And it seems at least one of his teeth didn't needed to be filled since our insurance denied the claim even after submitting before-after x-ray. We ended up paying $734.03 out of pocket in addition to $289 co-pay. Insurance paid her $255.11 for 3 cavities (claim for 1 cavity and 1 extraction was denied again) but she refunded us $239.00 (I guess she really needed that $16.11 she didn't forward to us...). We will take this as an expensive lesson to do our research before going to any dentists, but I wanted to leave my review to warn others.

We first came for my daughter's tongue tie revision shortly after birth. The procedure went fine, but follow ups were only with an OT, not the treating dentist, Dr. Hananvash, until our lactation consultant raised concerns about possible reattachment. The office also recommended post release stretches for only one month, but several lactation consultants told me separately that was too short and could increase reattachment risk. By comparison, my older son had the same procedure at Tongue Tie Team, where we had easy access to the doctor and even her direct number for questions. We later went back for a tongue tie evaluation for my husband and me, and this is where things went badly. Meredith, who handles these consults, told us the office wasn't set up for adult consults, then promised a callback that never came. After I called multiple times over several months, I only learned adult consults were actually offered when the OT mentioned it during my daughter's appointment. Meredith claimed she had call logs showing she'd tried reaching us, but we never received any calls, voicemails, emails, or confirmations, even when I had her test my number live. The intake forms she gave us were also clearly designed for children and mostly didn't apply to us. We were then told we needed to pay $1,000 for a CBCT scan and to book the doctor consults, for both of us. No one mentioned a credit card surcharge. When I saw a charge of $1,030, I asked Meredith about it. Frustrated, I asked to speak with the office supervisor. Instead of connecting me with a manager, Meredith said she'd try to cancel the transaction. When she did, only $1,000 was refunded to my card. A few days later she called to say they'd recently switched credit card processors and couldn't figure out how to refund the $30 fee, so they asked me to pay $970 by debit card instead, which I did. On the day of our 10am appointment, after waiting about 20 minutes, Meredith came out to the lobby and told me, in front of other patients, with no privacy, that the card company said the $30 should have been reversed, and that I needed to pay it before we'd be allowed to see the doctor. I don't understand why payment was being demanded before we'd even seen the doctor in the first place. I pulled up my card's app right there to show her no refund had ever come through. She went back to check with the office manager and eventually let us in. At that point I asked to speak with the office manager directly, given everything that had happened. She came in, said she needed to review the call logs, and offered no apology or acknowledgment of any kind. When Dr. Hananvash finally came in and asked how we were doing, I explained what had happened. She told me I couldn't speak to her staff in a disrespectful or frustrated way. I hadn't yelled or been disrespectful. I was simply expressing frustration with how things had been handled. She insisted her staff had told us about the 3% surcharge before the card was charged, which is simply not true. My husband was present that day too and never heard any mention of a surcharge. She also said they could prove they'd tried calling me multiple times, but I never received a call, voicemail, email, or even an appointment confirmation. Even when I repeatedly told her I never received the $30 credit back from the credit card company, she didn't believe me. She wasn't willing to consider that we were telling the truth, and said if we didn't want treatment, we didn't have to proceed. At no point did she apologize for the staff's handling of things or for starting the appointment 20+ minutes late. We proceeded that day since we'd already waited months and wanted to start therapy, but I've since decided to find another provider. Because of this experience, I now have to find someone else, pay more money, and delay treatment further. I understand adult tongue tie providers are limited in San Diego, but that doesn't mean patients should accept unprofessional treatment because of it. A knowledgeable doctor doesn't make up for a practice that dismisses patient concerns instead of learning from them. Avoid this practice.
