About six months ago I got it in my head I wanted to do a boudoir shoot. I am in no way a classic…read morecandidate - 57 years old, 6 feet tall, boy body, nobody's idea of a pinup girl. Did my google searching for photographers in Houston and contacted about a dozen. Perhaps half responded they weren't available, and half didn't respond. However, one adorable young lady in Austin (3 hours away), Julia Vie of Vivian's Muse, said she was very excited about shooting me! We exchanged several emails about the process and logistics and had an extended phone chat. My trepedation morphed into excitement and anticipation. Let's do this!! The big day! Julia shot perhaps 400 photos in an hour or so, all the while offering instruction, incredible encouragement and showing me what she had captured in her viewfinder. All with a monster camera and first class professional lighting. We shot on the couch, on the stairway, in the window, on the bed. Woah, so exhilerating! Nervousness was gone and my inner goddess had taken over. I'm not one for exaggeration but this was truly one of the best hours of my life. Back the next morning to review and select proofs. Oh no, her computer jammed up, wasn't happening. No problem in the digital age. We had more girly chat, comparing notes on all of the fun we had had the preceding day. A few days later the proofs arrived via email. I was blown away. OH MY! That cannot possibly be me. But...it is! Being a goddess, even for a short while, really gets in your head. And stays there. Who would have thought the idea of having a little fun by trying something different would turn into a life changing event? Thank you so very, very much Julia! She seemed distant and distracted throughout the day, barely engaged with us, and did not take time to get to know us or offer direction. Several key moments--especially the large group photo and our couple portraits--were rushed, poorly composed, and lacked basic guidance. Important details were missed, lighting was harsh, and many images were unflattering or unusable. When we raised our concerns respectfully, they were dismissed as "personal preference," and requests for reasonable edits or a fair resolution were denied. We paid $350 per hour, including a full hour set aside for getting-ready photos with my sisters. Darby did not pose us or provide any direction, and those photos turned out so badly they're honestly crushing to look at. The best photos we have from our wedding were taken by friends on their iPhones, which has been incredibly embarrassing--we've had to ask guests if they have anything usable to share. Her profile and portfolio show one level of care and quality, but what she delivered was very different. We only have a handful of usable photos from the gallery. Considering that I had taken the day off work and had to wake up pretty early since I was doing my own hair and makeup, I was pretty upset about having to push back the photos till later in the day. Ms. Tagle suggested we arrange to try to meet at 4 or 5 in the afternoon. It's SXSW weekend and getting hotter and hotter as the day progresses and she wants to meet downtown during the worst time possible, seriously?!? It didn't help matters that my fiancé had specifically taken the morning off and had to go into work at the time she wanted to reschedule. Thanks to modern technology, I found out through facebook Ms. Tagle had spent the night before at SXSW till early in the morning and had the audacity to post status updates on her whereabouts. In others words, she lied to me on why she wasn't able to make our appointment. I immediately canceled our appointment and requested she refund my deposit.
