I stumbled upon Absolutely Outer Banks a handful of years ago and I was impressed with the selection of locally made arts and crafts. Ever since, this is my go to spot for legitimate and tasteful Outer Banks souvenirs. In addition to locally made items they also have some vintage items and even some new items for sale. One item that this store specializes in is really cool resin windows that are unique and exude happiness. Absolutely Outer Banks has artwork in all mediums and in all price points. They have jewelry, wood signs, candles, prints, glass work, textiles, metal work, etc.  On my most recent visit I enjoyed looking at a vintage pin ball machine and eyeing up the beautiful array of Fiestaware. There is plenty of opportunity for ooohhhing and ahhhing.  The owner is super friendly so that adds to the overall great experience. Absolutely Outer Banks is centrally located in Kitty Hawk in the former spot of a bank.

The exterior of the building is nicely maintained and upon walking in the store I was totally mesmerized at all of the stuff to look at. They have tons of yard flags and other cute little knock knacks to stick in the garden. They also carry a variety of OBX souvenirs, Christmas ornaments and other knick knacks. They offer a lot of cool classes and even take home canvases that have a pre-drawn image. This is what we ended up getting. We got three for about $100. Sadly, we were pretty disappointed with the actual product we got. When you get the canvas it shows what the image is supposed to look like when it's completed, and it comes with paints. I don't know what I expected but I got a canvas that had a hand drawn, in pencil, horse on it. That's it. With written instructions. Honestly I didn't mind the canvas being hand drawn but please get someone to do a better drawing? I don't know. For $30 each it's just not what i personally expected. I think overall maybe just stick with the classes and skip this part.

Something unique to do at the beach…read more Just as any other place like this you pay for time, the piece and here extra paints (.50, which is to discourage paint waste) the fees are standard and help cover the staff helping with keeping studio clean and the kiln. Free Wi Fi for dads while kids design masterpieces. Anyway besides the prices the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The smells from next door are a nice bonus too!

When I got in, a young girl explained prices and procedures, $8 dollars for "studio time" for painting, and then the additional cost of the ceramic pottery. When I got my pieces and sat down, I was told I could only pick 5 colors from their selection for my decorative plate and 5 for my nephew for his piece, each additional color was another charge. I think it was .50-.75 per extra paint. Bogus. Whatever, my nephew and I painted. It ended up being about a $70 activity which was surprising because at Plaster Fun Time with $70 I could probably paint a quarter of the store. Just over priced. Especially asking people to pay for "studio time". This studio time should be included in the price of the pieces. You have to pay for the time, the pieces, the paint, I'm surprised they don't charge you for the brushes or water. I won't be coming here again :)

We thought it was going to rain today in OBX, so we planned for a no beach, indoor activities kinda…read moreday. This place was a great afternoon break for our kiddos. You pick your shirt (i.e. t-shirt, tank, love sleeve, dress, onesie, etc.), put on some gloves, a smock and get to "dyin." The store sends you home with washing and care instructions. IMO, it is on the pricey side, but overall, our group had a good time and the girl there was friendly and helpful. Notes: Douse that fabric with the colors you want because we thought we soaked it, but all the adults still had lots of white shirt areas after we washed it. Sizes of the clothes run on the smaller side. I got an 18M onesie for my 10M son and it fit him perfectly (it was Gerber's brand). Hubs got a Large (Gildan brand) and doesn't love tight-fitting clothes, so he would've gotten an XL had he known. They don't have pastel colors. They have 3 patterns (only) of tie-dye pattern to choose from. This activity was under an hour for us (with kiddos), so it didn't "kill" a lot of time, but I imagine it might take more time if there was a group you are waiting on or taking your time tie-dying. You Can bring your own shirts/dresses/whatever, but dying it will cost $10 (more if it's a sweater or thicker fabric). You Can opt to buy a pre-tie-dyed merch, but that really takes the "fun" out of it.

BLUF: Unique and nostalgic gift shop that plays off of local history in the area…read more I feel like Bluegrass Island Trading Company has been in business for a long time so I am surprised it's not on Yelp. I love this store so I wish I had taken more photos so the people of the Webernet could see what a neat vibe it has and be sure to stop in. Immediately upon walking into this unique and quaint gift shop, you feel like you have been transported somewhere else with a magical story to tell. We enjoyed looking at classic National Park-esque shirts from Woodsy Owl with slogans like, "Give a Hoot, Don't Pollute," Sasquatch-brand soaps, gifty food items, and novelty drinks. Also, I loved the moonshine merchandise and that they had a really nice exhibit on Buffalo City right in the store. Having studied the history of Dare County a bit, I was somewhat familiar with Buffalo City being known for logging but I didn't realize that where all of the moonshine magic happen was just about 20 miles away. We visited nearing closing time so I didn't want to be too thorough in my perusing by now I wish I had spent more time in this chill store. Neat place with neat stuff and a neat story to tell.

My favorite collection is the Outer banks motif which captures my memories and time spent at OBX. I will definitely be back!
