They are wonderful! When you first move, of course the first thing you forget to check on or get is Doctors! My boyfriend actually found Dr. Chow on Yelp, and visited him with a good visit, so I pursued. It was wonderful. I felt so taken care of! Everyone is smiling, happy, helpful and considerate. Especially Dr. Chow and the lady who cleans my teach. We always talk, and they always remember and keep in mind the things I say about my teeth or how I feel when a tooth is bothering me. They are also very up to date with their technology, which is very important to me as I know that they have the best available tools to help their patients. I just went for my second cleaning. Last Wednesday, I was in excruciating pain and found out that I had a cracked tooth, but my dentist couldn't immediately perform the procedure so he gave me penicillin and a pain medication until I came back in 12 days. That Friday, a friend recommended that I contact Dr. Chris Chow at the Ala Moana Dental Group. Dr. Chris & his staff were amazing! I was able to secure an appointment at 12:15 that day and Dr. Chris was able to perform the procedure and give me immediate relief from the pain. A follow up appointment was scheduled for the next week, and they even sent a reminder text to my mobile phone. While I am not a huge fan of going to the dentist, as I am sure most people aren't, this has been one of the best dental experiences, I've ever had. Thieves. Here my situation in brief: My front tooth broke in half. Not enough tooth for a crown. My "treatment" is either a bridge or implant. I don't like bridge cause the one I have (from Matsunaga dentist of Tooth Talk) got decay on both supporting teeth (my fault it is). So doc files down my tooth and makes a FLIPPER, which is a partial denture really. I paid my half for the flipper and the rest is covered by HDS. Now, here is the issue. HDS won't pay the doc until my front tooth is extracted. Implants are like $4K to do, and I dunno if I want to spend all that for one lousy tooth. So I vacillate whether to go ahead or not, whether to go ahead or not, etc.... Now it is 3 months and I still can't decide on this $4K future bill. Then I get email saying your account is going into collections unless I pay around $200. They fail to mention about having the extraction done so they can start the HDS claim. What I am taking issue with is that the office didn't relay this information about the extraction, just said YOU OWE US $200 or it's collection hokey for you! How about saying instead.... "please get the extraction done so our kid dentist can get paid?" To me they are stealing my HDS benefits... I am a senior citizen and it takes some time for me to think about things, especially $4,000 implant bills. Be Patient with your Patient! read more

I scored a deal by booking an appointment with Dr. Chow. It was my first visit and I was really impressed. The staff is incredibly nice, friendly, and professional. They REALLY did a great job. My teeth were thoroughly inspected and cleaned by the dental hygenist. She also used a special camera to take a picture of my teeth, which shows up on the flat screen TV on the wall for you to see. I also got digital X-Rays, which appear on a computer screen for viewing. The "results" are interpreted by Dr. Chow. I found out I have a cavity! I also received some other suggestions on things I may want to do in the future for my teeth. It was very insightful. I went away with a bag of goodies too. read more

I found this place through yelp so I thought I'd give it a try and of course come back and give yelp my own review. SO! I initially went in b/c of a aching pain in my upper molar (assuming it was a cavity) I was greeted by Jessica the hygienist. We started with the xrays (and they have this flat screen right in front of you and the shots come up instantly so you can see your own xrays right away. very cool :) Then there was the cleaning which was nice b/c Jessica kept the conversation going so it wasn't awkward or boring and also kept telling me how my teeth were in decent condition/fairly clean. It was refreshing to go to a dental exam and hear some positives for once instead of the usual, "you really should floss better" or whatever mean lectures they like to give you. Also, as she was looking at my teeth and doing the regular check up, she kept me informed on exactly what she was looking for/what all the numbers/codes meant..which I thought was really considerate/made them different from other clinics. Also, I might be moving soon and Jessica didn't forget to mention that they email the xrays over to the new dentist if needed which I thought was great! b/c i know xrays are the only things that would really be helpful to a new dentist. Then I met Dr. Chow and we found out that I had a minor cavity/they were going to patch up my filling that chipped off a bit. He also explained to me about crowns and how I'm a perfect candidate, I did feel a bit like he was really trying to push me into it, but he didn't forget to say that it's more of a "want" but after reading all the reviews on him not being a typical dentist that sells unnecessary things..I was a bit surprised. If I didn't bring it up my cosmetic issues, I would've like a more brief suggestion. Sorry Dr. Chow...this is where one of my stars are being dropped. The fillings took about 10-15 mins max? Everything was prompt and Dr. Chow even gave me a post opt call later that night to check up/let me know that was his cell in case of anything. All in all, they are a GREAT team and care more than your average dentist. If I wasn't moving off island, this would be my regular dentist. :( read more

I was a patient of Dr Chow's since he came out of med school. My teeth were very bad because of years of phobia and mistreatment from other dentist. Dr.Chow had the patients and expertise to keep me calm. I wouldn't even sit in the chair without nitrous. However after just a few visits he had me as calm as if I were getting a haircut. I am very proud of my smile now. Thanks to Dr.Chow and his gental demeanor. His office is equipped with the latest high tech equipment, which can really make a difference in your treatment. I'm used to going in and coming out of a dentist office without building any sort of relationship with my dentist...but with Dr. Chow things are a bit different. He always greets you with a smile, he connects with you, and he explains all the procedures and options thoroughly so that you actually understand. Doctor Chow is by far the best dentist I've ever had! He really cares about his patients and takes time to get to know people. I have genetic problems with my teeth, and this is the first time in my life I haven't felt anxious about going to the dentist. My very first visit I told him all the problems I had with my last dentist, and he has gone out of his way to make me feel comfortable. I have also had two times now where he's done something for me without charging me. The first time he fixed a filling that my last dentist messed up, but I was so scared to go back because of how much pain he caused me. The second time he redid two fillings that he had done that leaked a little bit. I'm very sad that I'll be losing him as a dentist when I move to the mainland in 3 months. Scheduling An Appointment: His office staff is great to work with as they are always warm, friendly and efficient. They call and/or text before an appointment to remind you. They also called me once when Dr. Chow was running early. I was able to come in sooner and got on with my day faster. During An Appointment: The office is conveniently located and has parking available in their lot. When you walk through the doors someone always kindly greets you. The office is extremely clean but it is also very welcoming. I have always been seen right away and never waited more than 5 minutes for my appointment. So far, I have seen Dr. Chow for a regular cleaning and to get veneers on my first four front teeth. He is always very friendly, kind and approachable and makes the not so fun task of going to the dentist a lot easier. Dr. Chow was always patient and willing to talk through procedures with me. I always felt like all of my questions were answered and that I was in good hands. His dental hygienists are also very nice and make you feel comfortable. The beautiful ocean views don't hurt either! I just went in for a cleaning, and it was a very pleasant experience. Dr. Chow has a clean & modern office, and the staff was very nice! I got to watch ESPN on a new flat screen TV while the hygienist did my cleaning, which made the time go by quickly. It was also pretty cool watching my X-Rays come up on the screen in front of me almost instantaneously. I was visiting from Utah and accidentally broke a filling early in our trip---this could have REALLY ruined our once in a lifetime vacation to Hawaii!!! Obviously an emergency, I found Dr. Chris Chow on Yelp, and after reading all the great reviews, gave his office a call to make the earliest appointment he had available. His staff was great---got me right in, and I was pleasantly greeted by them in his clean, modern office with a great view of the ocean!!! Like so many people, I hate going to the dentist, especially in a situation like this where I was in a LOT of pain from the broken filling. I am one of those people who love the dentist, but when I moved I had a hard time finding a dentist that would take care of me the way my old one did. I made my first appointment for a cleaning months ago. The staff was very friendly, prompt, clean, and made me feel comfortable. I went to see Dr. Chow for the first time after reading all these rave Yelp reviews. Boy, was I disappointed! I have not seen a dentist for teeth cleaning for about 2 years but I feel I am in pretty good dental health. I use an electric Sonic Care toothbrush. I made an appointment to clean my teeth and have a regular check up. Everyone was very friendly until my hygienist started cleaning. She was pretty professional and used numbing gel on my gum. But she spent a lot of her time selling me "deep cleaning" for periodontal diseases after she tested my gum. After she was done, I went to the bathroom and was disappointed my teeth didn't look that much cleaner and I didn't feel the sensation when I had my teeth cleaned before (like smoothness when running your tongue over the teeth). When it came to time to see Dr. Chow, he looked at my X-ray and commented I need a filling and crown over a chipped tooth. Then he saw I had some other chipped teeth and asked his assistant to call out a list of things to be done on a bunch of other teeth. He then left and said I need to do the filling and crown first and left. When I asked him why my teeth did not feel that clean he asked me where I had it done last. He said since I did it in Hong Kong the practice and approach was different:-( At any rate, he left and his assistant wanted to schedule the next appointment. When I asked how much this will cost and how much will my insurance pay, she went out to print me a "treatment case" with 15 items, for a cost of $2575 and patient's responsibility of $1812. I asked if I could think about it before the next appointment and she left. After I sat in the chair for 10 minutes, I asked what's next and they said I was free to go. When I left, the receptionist caught me and said I need to pay my portion of the fee, which initially she said was $10 but later changed to $53.15. I did not get an itemized bill though. I just wanted to get out and I am never going back. They may be good dentist and hygienist but I felt they were more interested in maximizing their revenue. I also did not feel they did a good job cleaning. Dr. Chow also did not explain the relative urgency and importance of the 15 items, which are the must do ( first priority) and which are the nice to do ( second priority). read more

It was not painful at all and I expected it to be much worse. It was far less painful then even routine procedures I have had done at other dentists in years past. When you step into Dr. Chow's office you don't really feel like you're going to the dentist. He and his staff are very professional, but it's their friendliness that really makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. It is not easy to find a great dentist but rest assured when you come here you won't have to look anymore. Dr. Chow uses the most modern equipment and its obvious he keeps up with the latest technology. He really takes the time to explain each procedure and answer any questions that you may have. The office also has a great text and email reminder system for upcoming appointments. After coming to Dr. Chow I now feel like my teeth will be well taken care of.
