I have a tough time reading these reviews. I went to see Trahan based on them and am now completely wary of anything written about doctors on yelp. I've seen him multiple times for allergies and anxiety, and my girlfriend (japanese) seen him for a bad cold and other women issues. The treatments were not helpful at all and the only worry I could sense from the doctor (girlfriend felt the same) is how are we paying. The sessions started and ended with "can you pay cash?". I felt rushed, and hated the acupuncture, my girlfriend said that he makes her nervous and this is not what the sessions should be like. I've recently found a real chinese doctor in queens that does a much better job for 1/3rd of the price and prescribes real chinese herbs, not tonics. As an Asian, I was already skeptical about going to a non-Asian but this guy was referred hence I wanted to be open. Chris Trahan is a great salesman. I was constantly told that I could fix this and that problem and to trust him but all I wanted him to do was focus on 1 part of body. Herbs and pills were constantly being sold to me. I should have stopped seeing him after the 1st session. During the 1st session, he was answering phone calls or getting the door. I got so annoyed that I said, "Are we done with the interruptions?" I started seeing Dr. Chris Trahan for stress-related complications due to moving to the end of the earth, aka Jersey City. My hair started falling out, my periods basically stopped, and I felt tense and irritable. Within one week of beginning acupuncture and herbal medicine with Dr. Trahan, I felt better. Dr. Trahan has a background in American and Chinese herbology, acupuncture, and other bodywork modalities that work in concert with the acupuncture/herbs. He's a very warm, caring, and patient person who welcomes questions about TCM (traditional chinese medicine) from his clients. His lobby is littered with books and magazines on alternative medicine and healing and he displays a sincere interest in your health and well-being. I'm just so damn pleased. Dr. Trahan (I think he pronounced it in a single syllable"Tran") was super flexible about my wanting to book a same-day appointment and I felt totally comfortable with him. Sweet guy. Admittedly, I was a mess when I arrived and a mess when I left, but after a day or two, everything was fantastic. Life, the universe, everything. No more pain, no more foggy head, and tons of energy. My Qi is in good shape, oh yeah. I will admit that he did a good job on making my back pain go away, and we also worked on my immune system, which was really horrible then. I definitely say that I got better. But.....He was so rude! He treated women as if they were second class citizens. I remember going to a session while my boyfriend was waiting for me, and after the session he kept addressing him instead of me, as if i wasn't even in the room (he did this more than once). Excuse me, I AM THE PATIENT! And second, he has no business talking to someone else about my health anyways. I tolerated him because he IS good at his job and I do think he is talented, but it's his bedside manner that desperately needs work. I have used Dr. Trahan on and off for over 20 years. I find he is gentle, kind, considerate, very knowledgeable, and yes I have had some very good results with his work. Why is it that people who use Grupon are never satisfied with anything? Hmmm? Me think they never wanted to go in the first place but did so to get something cheep something they had curiosity about. I don't love traditional Medicine; I do go to a Doctors when I have to. But when it comes to taking pharmaceutical junk that often only improves the cash flow of the Pharmaceutical industry, and most often gives people side effect.... I contacted this provider to get help with my insomnia. After the first visit I checked the reviews and I could not sleep that night. Nevertheless I decided to give him a chance. I learned my lesson. From now on I will only choose people with positive reviews when dealing with health issues. As other reviewers said, needles hurt a lot. One gets the impression that he is there just for the money. He is intrusive with his questions and very aggressive. I also suffered the yelling from him. He does not accept any criticism and will always find an excuse to continue his bad behavior. Made appointment for my daughter who needed help with depression and was just recovering from psychotic episodes. Was looking for a way to get her through till we could get in to see integrative psychiatrist. Thought Dr (? would not consider him a Dr) Trajhan would be a interim solution NOT. He could barely follow her history. I am a doctor so was dumbing down history and he still couldn't follow it. So badly that my own daughter even walked out of the appointment 20 minutes into it. This was before I could even recognize that this was a disaster. I am a doctor myself. He should not even have license as he is very scattered and can't follow history. He should be seeing someone for himself. We wanted acute homeopathy (incompetent homeopath for one) and he can barely prescribe herbs. To say the least we didn't even get through the history. Biggest waste of $300! Should have listened to my daughter and not even gone to get the cash because his appointment was a complete waste of time. It is no wonder he had open appointments during the jewish holiday where everyone who is good is booked! I came here via a Groupon offer that I purchased. I guess I should have known better than to try and cop a deal when it comes to any service that involves sticking needles in my body. From the very beginning, I had difficulty trying to set up an appointment with Dr. Trahan. The first 3 times I called, he picked up and said very shortly: "I'm VERY BUSY. Call back after 3PM." Let's just say that it took about 5 calls to book an appointment. And when I was finally able to book that appointment, his receptionist called and left a message saying that he would have to cancel and reschedule for another time. At this point, my patience was wearing thin and I sort of lost my cool with this guy. To add to that, I think during 2 out of the 5 phone calls, he kept trying to gauge whether or not I'd be a profitable customer going forward. He kept asking how serious I was about acupuncture and if I thought I'd be interested in coming to him long-term. Um... isn't the point of Groupon to TRY out the service at a low cost? Regardless of that cost, if he delivered great customer service, then he wouldn't have to worry about that, now would he? So going back to the story... when I confronted him and asked why he'd have to reschedule, he retorted back and asked why I couldn't be more understanding when all of his other patients were all OK with this. He also claimed that he had to go to a hospital to perform some emergency medical procedure... Um. Correct me if I'm wrong, but are acupuncturists ever needed in an emergency situation? I believe he told me that he was "needed at the hospital". Basically, from the get-go, I could just tell this guy was a quack. When I finally went in for my scheduled appointment, my impression was no different. I was actually shocked at how disheveled and run-down his office was. I had actually gotten the impression that he would be this dousche-y doctor with state-of-the-art equipment with how busy and important he claimed to be. To be fair, in person, he was a lot more personable and likable... but again, he kept trying to gauge whether or not I was only here to fulfill my Groupon purchase or if I'd be coming back. It really made me feel uncomfortable... and then after talking my ear off for 30 minutes, he finally stuck a few needles in me. Now because I've been acupunctured before and because my mother used to get routine treatments from a Korean doctor, I've seen what a proper treatment entails and how many needles usually go into this. I don't enjoy writing negative reviews. I would rather rave on about how awesome a service or person was. So I am only writing this review to warn people from wasting time, energy and money. I bought a Groupon for 2 acupuncture sessions and a herbal consultation. When I first emailed to get an appointment, I did not hear back and needed to email another time and then finally call to get a response. There is not secretary or assistant working at this office, so the doctor is doing everything by himself - answering calls, emails, scheduling appointment, doing treatments and mixing herbal concoctions. Because he is juggling many things all at once, I think that the consumer service that was provided was not very good. I had to call the office a few times to actually schedule and confirm my appointment. (Aren't THEY supposed to call ME to confirm and not the other way around?) Anyway, as soon as I got into the office I felt, again, like the customer service provided was very poor. I felt uncomfortable about they way I was spoken to and I felt pressure (even before we started the session!) to sign up for additional treatments and paying a lot of money. It was like that was the focus - not to provide me with good quality care and an enjoyable relaxing session, but asking me to commit to signing up and spending a lot of money when I didn't even experience the session first. Also, after the session was over, I felt that the doctor was irritated with me because I did not have cash on me right away to pay for the herbs. I felt overall that there was no genuine care for my well-being and more a focus on making money, getting me in and out and not providing me with a quality experience. The second time I went back, it was actually worse. The needles hurt me a lot - I have had acupuncture before and this didn't feel right. As soon as the needles were in and I was in major pain and needed to breathe to try to let go of the pain, I was asked about if I was going to sign up and come back for more treatments and pay a lot of money. Sorry, but THIS IS NOT THE RIGHT TIME to ask someone to come back and talk about money. I felt very uncomfortable. At the end of that session, I said I was not going to come back and I asked if it was ok if I gave some constructive feedback to explain why. I was told yes, and when I brought up the fact that the customer service was not so pleasant for me (I didn't even get into details or talk about how I felt pressured to spend a lot of money and commit right away), I basically got yelled at. I was SHOCKED!!!!! I was told that I am being rude, and I was insulted and the blame was put on me. As soon as I heard this, I said never mind and I said goodbye. I was not going to stand there and listen to to this ridiculousness. When I got into the hallway to get to the elevator, the door opened and I was verbally attacked in the hallway, hearing things like, there is something wrong with me, I am rude, etc. etc. I was SO HORRIFIED by this totally inappropriate and unprofessional behavior and said I was not comfortable with the conversation and left. He kept having me call back and was never politely. Instead of making an appointment he TOLD me when I was going to come in and literally said, "This is how it's gonna work"!! I went to Dr. Trahan for a chronic shoulder pain that I had been dealing with for a few years. Now, I've never received acupuncture from anyone else, so I suppose I have nothing to compare it to, but after getting used to it I found the sessions to be incredibly relaxing. After just a few treatments, my shoulder was feeling better than it ever had before. Furthermore, Dr. Trahan was super accommodating, both with the schedule and the cost. He always understood when I had to cancel last minute because of work and he gave me an incredible graduated discount. By the end I was probably costing him more than he was making but he still always made sure he could fit in my appointments. I've had a serious medical condition for some years, and modern medicine doesn't always have answers for me. In addition to my regular symptoms, over the winter my feet would get so cold at night that it interrupted my sleep. Warmer socks didn't help, but one session with Dr. Trahan did. Since then, he has been treating me with acupuncture for energy and balance problems, and now that allergy season is here, with homeopathy. I feel taller and stronger after my sessions, and the feeling tends to last the week. He asks very detailed questions about symptoms and sensations, and is a first-class listener. Eek! Methinks not is right! If you're reading these reviews I suggest that you continuing reading the rest of the ones on this site - it seems people fall in two categories - those that praise him and those felt extremely uncomfortable with him. This is going to be long so I apologize in advance. These reviews are meant to be a tool for helping others so I will describe my two experiences to the best of my ability and hopefully offer advice to others as well as Christopher Trahan. I came to Chris for acupuncture to relieve knots in my back and shoulders. Upon the first visit he explained his 'practice' is a holistic TCM that uses a combination of herbs and acupuncture to resolve many many issues ranging from fertility issues to depression and others. I am actually a believer in non-traditional approaches to solving medical issues and believe that the mind-body connection is an area that neuroscience is going to give great insight into in the near future. That being said if TCM offers a solution I am willing to try it out - but my issue that I came in with was knots and back pain resulting from sitting down at a computer and generally being stressed out. Chris used his battery of questions to correlate it to my depression and anxiety. When I asked if the herbs would interact with my medications his exact words were " You have nothing to worry about I AM THE DOCTOR" in the most grandiose way imaginable. He became visibly excited as I disclosed more health problems - which I will not get into - but it was obvious that he viewed the more aliments I had as a bigger cash cow to squeeze money out of. I will get to that in a moment. The strangest part of the whole ordeal was that I really didn't want any 'special herbs' - but since it's his life's work I gave him the courtesy of letting him 'sell' me on it but I couldn't even get a straight answer when I asked what he had mixed in there. Without going into detail, I take medications for depression, anxiety and adhd - medication which I emphasized works - yet he persisted in talking about the possibility that I may one day no longer needing medication and just do maintenance on his special herbs. Well besides it making no sense whatsoever economically, I found it even more repulsive when a quick google search got me connected with a supplier of the special herbs and it gave me the ability to add on extra herbs based on specific symptoms. The price difference is astoundingly marked up and doesn't require weekly visits to get my 'fix.' So after spending a rather significant amount of time talking during our first appointment (consultation) he finally got me ready for the acupuncture session. This part was actually enjoyable but as others mention he is stingy with the needles. He really pressures you into buying herbs and pre-paying for your next visit from the first time you meet him. I delayed this until my second visit - hoping it was a one time thing but was quiet disappointed that this seemed to be his entire agenda. If he wasn't so pushy I more likely than not would've continued as a normal consumer. He brought the issue of pre-paying for the next visit and purchasing herbs up right before he was about to stick me with needles (and making sure I had cash) so I said yeah sounds good. That was the final straw for me and ruined the entire experience going forth. I paid for the $25 weekly herbs mix because I honestly felt bad since the groupon I bought 'didnt cover his expenses' but since he continued to go on another spiel about pre-payming for our next session I made an excuse to get out of of there. He pushed it, telling me to go to the bank a half a mile away and proceeded email me and leave 2 voicemails wondering why I never came back. It's like he felt entitled to pre-payment. Here is a radical idea, instead of having some strange slowly depreciating pre-paid charge rate, to as he put it, "ensure that there is a commitment." Why not offer a 10 pack of acupuncture for a reasonable rate. It's a very strange if not unethical way to do business. But that is not his agenda it is to create some power dynamic and exploit the hopeless. Heres a list of what herbs chris should take: - Aurum Met - Lycopodium - Platina - Anacardium - Chamomilla - Stramonium Maybe he treats his non-groupon customers differently but I wish I read this before buying the groupon and saved my self from the sales pitch, plus at the prices hes charging there better be some opium in those special herbs. I won't be back. -It took many attempts to make an appointment and each time he constantly asked if I have insurance and if they provide coverage -I felt uncomfortable the minute I walked in but I wanted to give it a chance. When you walk in, you cannot feel at ease because the place is a complete mess with hundreds of bottles in every possible place. -During the consultation and each treatment, he interrupts your session to answer phone calls every few minutes. He's a one man show, which is ok, but not the way he runs his practice. -In the 1st session, he used a total of 4 needles the first visit (I could already feel the penny pinching). -He tells me how he does his pre-screening (insurance) because he wants to avoid many people who are just looking for some cheap acupuncture treatments, and wants to have clients that come back. I'm not sure if he realizes that he's scaring people away before they've even had a chance to decide for themselves. -He asked me to commit to several more sessions right after he put in the needles for the first time. I'm laying thinking -- are you f**king kidding me? You are asking now? -High pressure (really no choice) but to buy the herbs for $25. Look in the container, there's about 2 tablespoons. The most expensive herbs I ever bought. -Oh wait, when you come back, he says he will give you the remainder of what you paid for the first time ($25) but he wants to give you a stronger dose and more of it. Only $25 more of course. Oh and "can you pay with cash?" I didnt want any more herbs and I could see he was visibly irritated but nothing happened like the other reviewer who says there was some yelling. -Each conversation had some high pressure sales pitch to sign up for more sessions. Of course there is a discount if I commit right now. And of course, 2 sessions will not do anything so that's not giving it a fair chance. But I'm sure committing to more sessions costing hundreds of dollars will. -After telling him numerous times that I dont have insurance coverage, he asked how much I have on my flexible spending account (really? is that appropriate? Why not ask how much money I have in the bank? Then I will just write a big check because I feel really comfortable!) -All conversations had "can you pay with cash" mentioned as several other reviewers said. If the credit card fees are too high, then don't take credit cards. -I considered not even going back for my second visit and when I heard the additional pressure to buy the 2nd batch of 'increased stregth" herbs, I thought about just getting up and leaving even before I received perhaps another 4 needles (there were maybe 10 needles in the second session). He seems to be desperate to make some cash as quickly as possible and not really interested in helping you with whatever your problem is. I purchased a deal off of lifebooker for "dr" trahan and i must say, i was highly disappointed. dr. trahan was very attentive about making appointments; he did call me and was very flexible about getting me into the office, once i was there i was completely turned off. he was working on multiple patients at a time (almost like a factory) and was answering phone calls, the office was a cluster of clutter, he tried to push the herbs big time and once he found out he could bang out my insurance, he called nonstop to make other appointments. i personally felt very uncomfortable (like i was just being evaluated as a dollar sign for future business potential rather than trying to get the most help out of my first session). i'm not an idiot, i understand that there are things that take time to heal, but he wasn't in a rush dive right in and get to work, he was looking to streeeetch things out as much as he could. i had to pay tax, and he sold me herbs and only gave me a few needles for my first acupuncture session (i was just expecting much more, i didn't feel anything different at all after my session). he talked about how often i could come back and "deals" he could give me if i paid cash and bought multiple sessions at a time; i was expecting a lot more out of my first session and not impressed with the results or outcome. acupuncture shouldn't be stressful, it should be soothing and relaxing, i just felt stressed with the constant phone calls and the amount of sessions he wanted me to come back for. however, he was flexible trying to work out a price. overall, i just had a creepy experience and thought that other people should know. you can evaluate him/his services yourself, but i for one, was completely turned off & got almost a quackery vibe from my experience. read more

Dr. Trahan is an exceptional doctor. I have been seeing him for several months and in the time that he has treated me I have felt a substantial difference in the way that I feel! This is in part due to his tremendous knowledge in both acupuncture and herbal medicine, but also his generous personality. Dr. Trahan is super easy to talk with, I feel very comfortable discussing any concern that I may be having about my health and my body. As an art teacher, I appreciate the time the time Dr. Trahan has taken to educate me about my therapies, diet, and nutrition. I really trust the guy, and I have a very hard time trusting doctors! Sessions with Dr. Trahan are always generous. He always takes ample time putting in the needles, which he does quite swiftly, and never rushes to see the next patient. As of late he has also been doing some bodywork with me, which has been absolutely wonderful! It's like getting an acupuncture and chiropractic appointment in one, but far better! (This would cost three times as much with any other doctor.) Dr. Trahan's expertise is wide and he always willing to spend extra time to consider and treat me in the most holistic way. I also appreciate how flexible Dr. Trahan has been with his time. I have had to reschedule my appointments a few times and he has always been accommodating. Dr. Trahan was very accommodating about getting me in quickly for a Groupon appointment. I've never had acupuncture before but I left my first session feeling like I had had a spa treatment. My second treatment was equally good and has given relief for my plantar fasciitis as well as other issues. The herbal remedy I've been using has helped me to feel great, and I notice a marked increase in my energy level. I plan on going back as regularly as I can afford. To the person complaining about the number of needles, even a cursory understanding of acupuncture shows that the number of needles doesn't relate to the intensity of treatment. Dr. Trahan is an extremely compassionate, talented, and dedicated holistic healer. He WILL want you to go on for more than just one session if you are coming in with any sort of complaint because that is the only way acupuncture is effective. Your issues won't usually go away after one session. The body needs a bit of time to heal and this is how acupuncture is traditionally practiced in order to actually relieve you of your complaints. Same thing with his herbs: he'll want to support your efforts in every way possible for true and lasting change. And if you give his methods a try, in my experience, they work. I tell all of my friends and family that they would benefit from seeing Dr. Trahan when they tell me of their various physical/stress-related complaints. So again, highly recommended! I had a LifeBooker coupon for Dr. Trahan. Although he did try to sell me future sessions (I mean hey, he is running a business) I did enjoy our acupuncture session. I can't afford to see him regularly but often come by for herbs and he's been very accommodating with having them ready for me. He's very knowledgeable and really does want to help you. I think his office is a little off-putting as it's not a relaxing environment or spa-like at all. He also needs to have a full-time receptionist as our treatment was interrupted by the phone one too many times. Otherwise, he would have 5 stars. Small price to pay, I guess. I started going to Dr. Trahan to address an issue I was having with my shoulder. I had been having persistent pain for the better part of a year and my physician had told me repeatedly that there was nothing he would be able to do to help me. After starting treatments that included acupuncture and electric stimulation, I noticed a marked improvement within two weeks. Within 4 weeks, I would say my shoulder was 95% better. I checked out the company's website and the description of the deal certainly appealed to me and I was keen to experience an "acupuncture and bodywork session and leave feeling that "the process can de-stress, invigorate, and boost your overall health.." As the other reviewers noted, it was very difficult to make an appointment in the first place, although I did understand that they were inundated with people trying to make appointments before the Groupon's expiration dates. During my conversations with Dr. Trahan over the telephone when I was trying to make an appointment, I was also extremely put off by his abrasive manner and the fact that I was repeatedly asked if my medical insurance company covers holistic medicine/acupuncture and if they charge an office co-pay and how much it is. I told him that this was a Groupon, which meant that I was merely wishing to try out acupuncture before I commit to anything. From the minute I walked into the front door, he tried to sell me on the idea of making twice weekly appointments for an initial two week period, and then "we could decide from there..." He also asked me if he may bill my insurance company directly for these visits and then I would only have to pay the office co-pay when I saw him each time. I told him that I was not interested in doing that, because I was not sure if I wanted to commit to anything right now. Then he told me that he has been charging Groupon people an additional $25 for making their appointments after the expiration date of the 29th, but, that he was not going to do that with me, since I did have two appointments which were canceled by his office (he asked me several times if I was sure I actually DID have appointments that were canceled!) He made me believe that he was doing me a huge favor by not charging me this additional $25. He also wanted to prescribe herbal medicine to me, which, of course, are not covered by medical insurance, all before we even talked about any health concerns I might have. Basically, from the minute I walked in, I felt that I was being pressured into buying services and medicine that I was not prepared to commit to right away. I understand that companies might use Groupon to drum up business, but this was just such a blatant and pushy way for a business to operate, and this "doctor" was far more interested in making money and ensuring future business. It felt like he did not actually care about the welfare of people or improving their health. I feel that he just wanted to ensure that he signs up people who have medical insurance so that he can bill medical insurance companies directly and thus be ensured of future income. Far from the promised "consultation and evaluation and a discussion after your diagnosis about a treatment plan..." this Doctor was selling me services before he even knew anything about me. I also did not have any "acupressure and other bodywork techniques" and definitely did not experiencing a "process that can de-stress, invigorate, and boost your overall health," I left feeling that I had just been in a timeshare sale office listening to sales pitches for something I was not ready to commit to. I also agree with the other reviewer that the appearance of the office and the treatment room did not inspire any confidence in me that I would receive competent, caring or hygienic care of any sort. The so-called acupuncture session caused me pain and discomfort and has made me think that maybe acupuncture is not for me. When I expressed this to the doctor, he scoffed at me and said, "...people love acupuncture!" It was clear that the moment he realized that I was not willing to commit to anything or buy anything, he lost interest in me. I now worry that I will have to keep checking with my medical insurance company to make sure that he does not charge me for this Groupon office visit (or any future visits that I will not be making!). Good service ensures repeat business, not cajoling, pressuring and being abrasive. I definitely did not experience "a warm, caring, and patient person who welcomes questions about TCM medicine) from his clients, or "who displays a sincere interest in your health and well-being." Quite the contrary. What an unhappy and upsetting experience this has been and it has put me off wanting to try acupuncture ever again! read more

Dr. Christopher Trahan is my homeopath and accupuncturist who has been trained in traditional Chinese medicine. I went to him for help with my plantar fasciitis. After my treatment with Dr. Trahan, it went from being so painful to walk to being able to walk all around the city again. I never had accupuncture before and now I am a huge fan. I also experienced back pain and after one treatment, the pain was gone. Another aspect of his practice that sets him apart from other doctors is that he spends a tremendous amount of time getting to know who you are so he can help you become healthy again. Dr. Trahan has treated for multiple conditions, such as digestive issues, bronchitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, cold/flu, viruses, etc. I did not have to take anti-biotics for any of the infections - it is pretty remarkable. He is also versed in pretty much everything, it seems. So, when I go to him i know he is thinking of solutions that span herbs, homeopathy, acupuncture, etc. And he doesn't just treat mild conditions either! read more

I went to Dr. Trahan for intense migraines I was having. A few years ago I had Sinus Surgery to relieve pressure in my temple, only to have it come back a couple of years later. I had surgery complications and wanted to try an alternative way to cure myself. Dr. Trahan treated me 3 times a week with acupuncture and herbs and I altered my diet a bit. i went to chris.. trahan for 13 yrs, and he served me very well. he is a comclipated, but, extremely caring person.. His PHONE PERsoNA---is NOT who he is. do not be scared by his deep voice. in person, he is warm, and extremely caring and knowledgeable. when i went to him, he had an incredible on-site herbal pharmacy. i have not found this with any of the many of chinese dr. s i have since seen. he also helped my with homeopathy. he was very suporitive to me, in all levels. read more
