Christos feels like a little piece of downtown Pittsburgh history. It isn't super fancy, but it has a lot of character, and you can tell it's a place that means something to the owner. Seeing him still there, working hard after all these years, was genuinely heartwarming. We visited over a busy holiday weekend, and although things were hectic, I couldn't help but feel for the owner, who was doing his best despite his age. I just wish the younger staff had stepped in to help him a little more. The food had some great highlights. The lamb kabob was tender, juicy, and full of flavor, the hummus was delicious, the lemon potatoes were amazing, and I enjoyed the sampler platter with the stuffed grape leaves. Overall, Christos has a lot of charm, history, and heart. I truly hope this Pittsburgh staple is around for many more years. Interesting experience. This is during the midst of picklesburg and was surprised there was only one other patron in the dining room, so it was very empty although there were a lot of people walking by. The server, Christos, who is 86 years old, came out to greet me as I was looking at the menu on the window. He certainly has a lot of charm and decided to take a chance. He doesn't understand English too well but definitely knows how to upsell. He asked me if I wanted hummus and bread, so I naturally thought it was part of the meal, but it was an additional four dollars. I ordered the great version of the Shepherd pie and he asked me if I wanted boiled potatoes since it was his grandmother's recipe. Again, I should have asked, but didn't realize I was going to be charging another five dollars as well as for anchovies on the salad. He seemed a little offended when I said I didn't really enjoy the Onassis dessert which he raved about and suggested that if I didn't like it, he would not charge me. Because I did not, and wanted to try the baklava sundae, he instead deliver the regular Baklava although it was not very crunchy and actually pretty soft and soggy like it had been sitting around and then microwaved. Probably the worst I've ever had. But he didn't charge me for the Onassis dessert. The salad was actually very good, particularly because of the added anchovies. The boiled potatoes were not anything special so I would pass if offered another chance. Sorry, grandmother! The main dish was also not very fresh and the Lamb tasted a little gamey. The "complementary" vegetable with the meal was green beans, which were very soggy and overcooked. Similarly, the rice tasted like it had been sitting around and prepared days ago. I also found two hairs on my plate. For $50, I would've expected a little bit more other than some interesting stories of how he used to work for Jackie O. But the worker who was sitting in the dining room and doing his own belching contest certainly added to the ambience as he was organizing the cutlery. Now I can understand why the place was so empty. I had planned to go to gaucho's down the block, but the wait was 30 minutes. Next time I will go to gaucho's instead. read more

Years ago, my family and I went here before seeing a show in the theater district. We decided to go back and it was an enjoyable stop. The pita was very thin and it really well with the hummus that was very solid. I got a large Greek salad that was pretty standard and good outside of a slice of banana that the owner said was for good luck. I tried a grape leaf which was the usual rice and herbs. I thought it was a solid grape leaf. The owner also brought out a combination of dipping sauces that I liked trying out. I got a chicken kebab which again was pretty standard, but the chicken was seasoned and cooked nicely. The owner also suggested a side of lemon potatoes which were tender and tasty. I thought the food was good, but the owner really made the trip worth it. He treated us like friends and was happy to share stories such as talking about cooking for Jackie Onassis. It felt a lot like going back in time as the atmosphere is just very different to most spots you'd find today. I didn't try any, but I've heard several folks say that his wine is excellent. An authentic Greek dining experience with delicious homemade food. The elderly Greek owner is kind and means well, although he shakes and is hard of hearing. Service is relaxed, and everything is cooked fresh to order, so be prepared to wait--but it's well worth it if you're not in a hurry. The cook even came out to speak with us, which was a nice personal touch. Our salad included a slice of banana, which isn't traditionally Greek, but we were told it's part of their good luck tradition. The owner may offer you extras like homemade hummus, house wine, and lemon potatoes. Just be aware that these are additional items and not complimentary. Everything we ordered was excellent: the lamb, spanakopita, moussaka, hummus, lemon potatoes, rice, and tyropita were all flavorful and authentic. The prices were very reasonable, making it a great value for the quality and generous portions. I've walked past Christos countless times and finally stopped in for dinner before a show - I'm so glad I did! The owner is a sweet older gentleman who ran the front of house and offered great recommendations including the lemon potatoes (a family recipe) and of course the Jackie Onassis cake. I have no clue what was in the cake, but it was AMAZING! The prices are super affordable - I can't remember the last time I had a salad, entree, and dessert for around $20. Christos feels like you stepped back in time to the 1990s and you might be in a Seinfeld episode. Stepping in there is no clear indication if you seat yourself. Christos seated us quickly and our experience began. Christos is keen to upsell you on all the goodies, offering wine, sardines, cake, and more. Our food came quickly and, while it was a bit more on the bitter end of Mediterranean flavors was enjoyable. Oddly, there was a single slice of banana in our salads. The grape leaves weren't our favorite and dolmas are one of my beloved dishes. The spanakopita also was so-so, but was enjoyable enough to want a bit more. I was looking for some nice Greek food, and decided to order Christos for delivery. To be honest, it was a somewhat disappointing experience. I tried the tiropita, the galaktoboureko, and the rice pudding. When I received my food from the delivery man, I noticed the bag was soaked with a white liquid. Upon investigation, I realized it came out of the rice pudding. This may have been just an issue with the delivery man, but it could have also been poor packaging from the restaurant. The food itself was pretty good, though. I really enjoyed the tiropita. It was super crispy and flakey on the outside, and packed with delicious, creamy cheese on the inside. The cheese seemed like feta and maybe another cheese as well. Very good and an okay portion. The galaktoboureko was also quite nice. This is a custard wrapped with phyllo. A nice combination of creamy and crispy, too. This dessert came with a somewhat odd lemony syrup that I wasn't the biggest fan of. Quite a bit of cinnamon too, but good overall. The rice pudding was creamy and had a nice amount of sweetness. It is unfortunate that some of it spilled out because the flavor was great. However, once again, it also had too much cinnamon. All in all, this is a solid spot for Greek food. I'd like to maybe go in person because the owner seems like a nice guy. For delivery, it just wasn't that well packaged, but the food is fine. read more

This was one of my worst experiences at a restaurant. First sit-down dinner of Pittsburgh and the food was close to inedible. For appetizers, we got the pita bread with tzatziki, baba ganoush, and hummus; all were pretty decent. However, when the rest of the meal came out (2.5 hours later), I was extremely disappointed. We got served salads that had bananas and lettuce as a starter. Odd combo that didn't work. I got the chicken kebab with spanakopita- everything on the plate was super sour and soggy, including the green beans and spanakopita, paired with tough overcooked chicken. Although we had a large group, the wait time for the amount of food was horrible- we were also the only ones in the restaurant. The conditions of the restaurant weren't the best either: bathroom was in the back of the kitchen, no walking space, no masks, fingers in food, etc. The waiter was an elderly man who had many difficulties communicating and performing his duties, such as spilling salad vinaigrette on me. I appreciate the family-run backgrounds of this restaurant, but there was no safety/quality to the food or service. read more

My dad and I stumbled upon this charming restaurant after the pirates game. We were unable to get any food/beer at the game and were both starving that we settled for this place, and so glad we did! We sat outside which was adorable and a fun spot to enjoy the view and city. The owner was very friendly and helpful. I ordered the baked salmon pireus, which was light and delicious. I loved the seasoning mixture on top of the salmon. The side vegetable and rice pilaf complimented the dish and tasted delicious. My dad ordered the lamb kebab with spanakopita and the meat was so tender. The spanakopita didn't blow me away, but still tasty and very satisfying. We finished dinner with galactoboureko and omg so delicious, airy and light! We couldn't believe how reasonable everything was! We also ordered mousaka to go for my mom and it was so flavorful. My parents thinks it tastes way better than the 2 Mediterranean restaurants we normally eat at. Highly recommend all the dishes I mentioned! We stumbled upon this wonderful restaurant walking around downtown Pittsburgh. We were a group of 9, and we were seated and served very promptly and efficiently. The food is amazing - like eating at your Greek grandparents' home. We had pita/hummus, Greek salad, chicken/lamb kebabs, potatoes, etc. They even have their own wine, which is made in Greece by the owner, Christos', father who is 105! We finished with cake for dessert, which was so tasty and satisfying! Christos is an amazing person. He is very humble, yet passionate about his restaurant. He briefly shared his life story with us also - such a welcoming and heartwarming experience! I can't believe the positive reviews I see on this page. They must be from family friends. My husband and I were looking for a place to eat after a Heinz Hall performance on Sunday. Since most of the 6th Avenue places were closed, we ended up at Christos. Since I love Greek food, I was pleased at the menu and surprised at the low prices. Christo took our order and continue to scurry around because the restaurant quickly filled. Where he manages to cheat you, he breezes by your table and says, "do you want wine?" We said "yes." So now we had wine. Then he breezes by again and says, "do you want salad?" Stupidly, we didn't ask if it was included in the meal and said "yes." Same thing, "do you want potatoes?" The actual lamb kebab dinner was a joke. It was about 4 ounces of lamb cooked to a crisp with a piece of phyllo dough filled with a slab of slightly melted cheese. I fought my way through the lamb because I was hungry, but the remainder of the meal was memorable only because it was so terrible. The icing on the cake was the $56.00 check for what started out as two $10.00 meals. I can honestly say Christos tops the list for the worst place I've ever eaten! read more

I had high hopes for this place. We sat outside so that may have affected the service but it was not busy inside and the service was very sketchy. Usually had to flag someone down after ordering. They only have homemade wine, red and white. We tried red but would definitely recommend bringing your own alcoholic beverage. Hummus was good. Lamb was dry. Gyros were ok but not much on plate. Chicken kabob was dry and minimal ingredients. Spinach pie was soggy and not that flavorful. Rice pilaf was good but not the main of the entree. Salad with potatoes was good and fresh. Baklava not the best I have had. Pistachios were over toasted and affected the taste...not good. Only one restroom which is entered through the kitchen. Prices were very reasonable but they should up their presentations and freshness and up the ambiance/cleanliness....location is great for theaters but I don't think we will return. read more
