I decided to give chronic tacos a try after finding out it is owned by Paul Walkers brother. So far I have tried the chicken and asada burrito. Food was delivered hot both times, the ingredients are definitely fresh, and the fresh lime and spicy salsa is tasty. But I do feel like everything else is a bit bland? The asada doesn't have the typical flavor you'd expect, tastes like it needs salt. Beans and rice was kind of a miss too. Underwhelming. I expected much better based off its reviews. First off, this is basically a small Chipotle. Second, the ordering process is not clear. Their menu does not match how you will order. For example, we ordered the Chronic Fries. They asked us what meat we wanted but the menu already had a meat chosen. Then they asked us about toppings but I had ordered it expecting the same toppings. The menu never mentions rice and beans in the ordering process but it is and it caught us off guard. Third, the food is meh. It's not nearly as good as the plethora of Mexican food available in the area. The fries in particular weren't good. And the bowl we ordered was just average. Lastly, the gentleman working on the line putting our order together was so rushed but there was like nobody there. Because the ordering process was confusing, we needed time to think. I usually enjoy Chronic Tacos, but this Laguna Niguel location was a huge disappointment. I placed an order, and first of all, my order kept getting delayed. When I eventually got there, I found out my food had been given to someone else. The staff tried to fix it quickly (props for that), but in their rush, they left the tater tots out of my breakfast burrito and forgot my guacamole order. The food also looked kind of messy. On top of that, this location doesn't offer egg whites like the Costa Mesa location, which is a bummer. Trying to order electronically is also a pain--this seems to be an issue at all Chronic Tacos locations. Chips were also stale. Overall, this spot just doesn't do it for me. I was there a month ago, the one in my hometown closed down for good because of the conditions, so I stopped off the I-5 Freeway South and took the turn off wanting to try the place, it took me awhile but I finally found it. I first learned of Chronic Tacos when I was in college and maybe tried it... once? I'm now what others consider somewhat of an adult and it was time to try them out again. THE FOODS | Tacos, burritos, nachos, etc. We like being able to customize our meals and so the following ensued... - Build Your Own Burrito | Al pastor, spanish rice, refried beans, cheese, onion, cilantro, lime, lettuce, and cabbage. Creamy, spicy baja sauce is thrown into the burrito, and I added sour cream ($0.54 extra) for good measure. It's got all the flavor components of a great burrito, but found the al pastor to be a little on the dry side. It seems leaner cuts of meat were used, which isn't a deal breaker; I just expected a little more fat content. - Nachos | Al pastor, refried beans, cheese, onion, and cilantro on top of crunchy tortilla chips. Salsa verde (medium) and salsa roja (hot) side sauces give this dish an extra bit of spiciness; complimenting the al pastor's savory/sweet flavors. I have to say - the food definitely tastes better and even healthier. You can see the changes made inside as well (love the gallery wall!) and the employees are so friendly!
