Soy Agave is a great spot for a special occasion. The food is consistently good, the atmosphere is beautiful, and it's definitely more of a destination restaurant than an everyday dinner spot. My only issue came during my most recent visit. I completely understand that gratuity is automatically included once you reach a certain party size, and I have no problem with that. However, our group consisted mostly of kids, and one of the adults wanted to order a kids meal because they weren't very hungry. The request was denied by our server. As someone who manages a restaurant myself, I understand the reasoning behind the policy. That said, I also believe there are situations where a little flexibility can go a long way in creating a great guest experience. It wasn't a huge issue, but it did leave us feeling like the restaurant was prioritizing policy over hospitality. Overall, the food and ambiance were excellent, and I'd still recommend Soy Agave for a nice night out. I just hope there can be a little more discretion in situations like this moving forward. read more

We showed up on Valentine's Day. They were slammed and we didn't see any open tables. The host of the staff did an amazing job taking us last minute and seating us within five minutes. I was pleasantly surprised because we just dropped in and out of nowhere. The food took a little while to come out, but we were complaining because we showed up on Valentines night without reservations. They were very accommodating and apologetic, really great service. Just like their other location in San Clemente, this Sol Agave was amazing! I had made a reservation for dinner but they really weren't that busy at all and parking is super easy to find. I'm sad I've waited so long to try this place it's been highly recommended forever and I've been too lazy I guess. But it was so good I'll definitely be back. The place was packed but the wait was minimal. Ambiance is nice with new decor and plenty of seating. Service was outstanding as we had multiple baskets of chips delivered and our drinks were always full. Our meals were absolutely delicious! The seafood enchiladas had plenty of seafood with thick and tasty tortillas making it the perfect combo. Add the rice and excellent garnish and it was one of my favorite meals. My group of 11 friends had a 6:30pm Rez to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and found ourselves standing in a crowded entry for 1 HOUR before we were seated. We spoke to the manager several times which was fruitless as he just made excuses for the fact that they overbooked and don't know how to manage their reservations. We were quickly seated and the waiter accommodated my daughter's request for strawberry lemonade even though it wasn't on the menu. Even though items on the menu were marked as gluten free, our waitress took the time to explain the difference between the items AND what I would need to modify to ensure no cross contamination. Delicious doesn't do justice to what we ate. The flavors were perfectly balanced - not over-seasoned, nothing overpowering, just full of flavor! The texture aspect was incredible! We went to Sol Agave last night for date night and had the BEST experience. We started with the Sugar Cane Filet appetizer and wow -- it was so good it could've been a main dish with the rice and veggies. The sauces were amazing. We also had Cadillac margaritas with a half Tajín / half salt rim and they were made perfectly. For dinner we split the "Para Dos - Taste of Mexico" and it was insane (in the best way). So much food and everything was incredible -- we had tons of leftovers. My husband loved the carnitas, the prawns had this buttery sauce with just the right kick, and the chicken fajitas were delicious. I'm allergic to bell peppers and our server immediately offered to substitute sautéed zucchini, squash, onions, and carrots -- which were so good. That meant a lot. My favorite was the steak with mushrooms and cheese, and the cheese fondue in the center was smoky with a little kick -- so flavorful. JJ, our server, truly made the night. He had great recommendations and was super attentive. The manager, Raphael, also stopped by to check on us, which was such a nice touch. Food, drinks, service -- 10/10. One of my favorite date night/ anniversary restaurant. This was our second vday celebrating with sol agave and I gotta say the food is just as good as the first time !! We really went for the calamari but it was sold out by the time we sat down, so we had the pulpo alas brazas and def a must try super flavorful not dry what's so ever or chewy it did have a bit of kick but with the salad it was really not noticeable. The drinks were super flavorful you can def taste the tequila lol I did wish we had a more attentive server he kinda kept forgetting us, but it was a busy day so I'm sure everyone was running around. I love the decoration and very inviting and just beautiful Our waiter Enrique was super nice and it was great service. There is live music on Tuesday evenings and the musician that was there on Tuesday night was so great. We even stayed a little extra so we can hear him sing more. It really added to the overall experience. But I have to say if you want to have a conversation it is a little loud and hard to have conversations but we managed and liked the music. You could always request to sit further away from the music like on the patio or on the other side of the restaurant. OK, let's get into the food. We ordered the pork belly bites as an appetizer and this was the best thing ever because there's a honey Serano sauce which I could dip anything in and it was amazing! Pork belly was cooked to perfection crunchy and delicious. so good! The presentation of the food was beautiful and very instagram worthy! I ordered the mahi-mahi tacos and I have to say I appreciate that the menu will tell you if it's gluten-free and vegetarian which is great for me so I knew exactly what I was getting. The fish was cooked so well, it was not overcooked the mango slices in there just added such a great combination of flavor. I also ordered a version, jalapeño pineapple, margarita, and that was divine My husband got the steak that came with the avocado jalapeño soup, which it's a cold soup that you have after which I think is a great palette cleanser and he loved it. Their happy hour menu is next level starting with their Ceviche al Gusto Mixto ($15) is fresh, flavorful, and the perfect light but satisfying plate. The Chile Verde Taquitos? Pure magic. The cheese inside just melts in your mouth in the most sinful way. Now let's talk about what I had yesterday starting with the Pulpo a la Brasa. When I say this dish sends me to another dimension? I mean it. Perfectly grilled octopus with out of this world seasoning, paired with a side salad that actually complements instead of just sitting on the plate. It's hearty enough to be a meal on its own. I also ordered the Taquitos al Gusto, and they were perfectly crispy, cheesy, and filling basically, happy hour hero material. Paired it with their Mexican yellow rice, which was flavorful and not just a filler side. To sip, I went for the Chipotle Raspberry Martini made with mezcal (smoky, spicy, and a little flirty). If mezcal isn't your thing, you can always ask for blanco tequila instead. We always sit at the bar, and Danny always takes amazing care of us he's friendly, attentive, and genuinely makes the experience feel elevated but not stuffy. So we went here a couple of years ago and it was amazing, pricey but amazing. Every aspect of the meal was perfect. Even the drinks. We went here today for a special occasion (I think it's under new ownership) and it was totally lacking. The drinks were great, but the food quality has gone down. Things aren't made the way they used to be. Not sure why things changed but it's not in a good way. The steak had good flavor but was full of fat. I ordered it medium rare and it came out medium well. My girlfriend said there used to be a specific flavor to her dish that make it special and that was completely gone. For $100 meal for two I was expecting a lot more. Sad that the food has gone downhill, honestly probably won't go back. Sad to say that because I liked this place. Server was great, customer service was excellent. I'm giving 2 stars because of the good drink and service, otherwise it would have been one star based off the food and food value. We went here at happy hour but the happy hour menu doesn't really have much that you'd want to eat. Disappointed that the margarita flight isn't on there but it's online.
