We have been in Salem for awhile, but never ate at the Village Garden. The Salad bar was Fresh and tasty. The soup was very nice. The portions were huge, I took home a doggy bag and had enough for lunch the next day. We really enjoyed ourselves and the food. We will be back. read more

Requested light sauce on my vegetable stir fry (afraid to ask if the rice is made with a meat broth) Waitress hands me the dish saying "with light sauce". Nope.... it had MORE sauce. I made a comment she had to hear about requesting light sauce & it came with double sauce. She did not offer to have it re-done & continued on. Yesterday, came here for the first time & discovered nothing but the salad bar seems to have something for a Vegan & not too much there for a Vegan either. I'm visiting family from another state. I guess if you're a local you get waited on ,but hubby and I sat in the bar area for 20 minutes with a waitress walking by our table and never stopping at our table . Finally the bartender came over took our drink order and actually brought them to us. We sat there with menus closed, she never stopped by to take our orders. We wanted the salad bar, then they closed their below average salad bar. We finished our drinks and went to Applebees where we were seated and serviced within 5 minutes. read more

We stopped for lunch while traveling. Based on the name I was expecting a typical greasy spoon, and the layout suggests the same. But the menu is larger and more varied than expected. Grilled Mahi Mahi, for example and several Italian dishes including eggplant parmessan. I ordered the lasagna and was impressed by the tastiness of the red sauce. I've never had a bad meal here and I've dined in probably close to 100 times as well as ordering to go. Their food is always fresh & staff is always very kind. There have been dishes that I've ordered in the past that I thought would be their "generic version" of whatever like the gyro but I've always been surprisingly pleased as to how delightful the quality in taste was. My husband and I stopped for lunch while traveling through. We always look for local places to eat vs fast food chains. Very clean restrooms and restaurant. Great staff and fresh salad bar. Food was good. Only wish the beef on the Manhattan was like that in the photo. Instead of thick pieces of beef it was a thin sliced lunch meet-tasty though. Prices were reasonable. The menu is eclectic from American,Asian,Greek,Hispanic to Italian Cuisine this restaurant has it all. you can also order Breakfast,Lunch or Dinner from open to close. I was stopping through this town and happened upon this quaint restaurant. I got the chicken parmesan, caesar salad and some chicken tenders. The chicken parm was really tasty!!! We all enjoyed this dish. The caesar salad and tenders were nice too. Overall, the food was good! The customer service here is what gives this place such a high rating. The host and the various servers that I spoke with were so gracious and sweet! Very accommodating for my take-out order, quick service, very kind people. Great place for families! read more

Nothing special to write about. Average small town diner reheat of frozen foods (good sized portions of mediocre food). I hade the baked manicotti. The sauce was obviously pre-made with very little flavor to it. Another of us had breaded mushrooms that had been left in the deep fryer too long (some were almost black). Another ordered the French dip and it came with (ugh) American cheese. Most of the diners looked to be on in years and it seems to be a favorite of the retired crowd, but don't expect any Wow! from the Village Garden. read more

Firstly I just want to mention I'm giving two stars only because the server was pretty attentive. If it was based on food alone I wouldn't give it a star but that's not an option. I was asked if I would like my appetizer to come out before the main course and although I said I did It only got there 20 seconds before she sat my dinner down. I ordered the French dip sandwich and it was inedible. The meat tasted old, was grey in color and extremely rubbery. Do not recommend and will not be returning. read more

NEW OWNER, so time for an update. Positives: dining room decor has been freshened, new menus, better attention to restrooms... all good. Negative: higher prices and different "combos" with the new menu. We were shocked by a $24 breakfast for the two of us that used to be roughly $18. Ouch! Still one of our favorite places for any meal, food is still good. Maybe not "great", more along the lines of comfort food. With the new pricing structure we'll just have to be a little more careful about how we order sides. read more

Could very easily be a 4-star restaurant. very clean,friendly service, large parking lot, small bar area with some gaming available. all in all could be a really nice spot. the kitchen and or servers and managers would just pay a little attention to the finer details. such as produce, the burger itself as seasoned well tasted good, nice fresh bun, melted cheese but take a look at the veggies wilted lettuce, thin sliced tomatoes and hot pickles not very appetizing. read more

Had the corned beef hash ( from a can ) and an egg. It was hot and fast. The staff are quite friendly. I have to say I'm a bit put off by a waitress that is asking her questions as she walks up to the table and is walking away while I'm answering. 2 words: prime rib. It is perfect. The taste is spot on and tender and juicy. I will be back here next time I am in town. Salad bar had the standard selection but was very fresh. Cheese cake seems to been crafted from the cheesecake gods. Perfect. Friendly staff. They need to update their hours for yelp! Stopped in because we were hungry and there are precious few choices around. We should have gone next door to Wendy's instead. The beef soup may have been "homemade" but I'm sure they used a soup base for it, as that and everything else was very salty and had lots of flavor in the worst artificial way. We both got the specials: roast pork with dressing and potatoes and roast turkey with dressing and potatoes. By special I'm assuming the formed rolls of meat were on clearance from the Sysco order form. Gravies were unnatural shades; assuming the only natural ingredient was water. I as well of my close friends have had the pleasure of dinning at Village Garden. Very clean and friendly. I have had everything from the fried walleye to the country skillet. Service was fast and delivered with a smile. The salad bar is to die for the best in town as far as i'm concerned. The owner is very engaging. He always asks if everything was to our liking. This is a family owned spot that's been open in Salem for several years. We've been here at all times of the day & evening, the food is always good. Love their broccoli cheese soup (Fridays currently) and always good for breakfast, portions are generous. The salad bar is fresh & tasty. The owner is usually at the restaurant and always stops to say hello. We've never really had a problem with food quality, but on the occasion that something isn't quite right, the staff is accommodating and corrects it. My fiancé and I have eaten at this restaurant many times before and have always had a good meal with great service. Tonight was different. A new owner has taken over and the manager running it (may be owner) has awful customer service. We got fettuccine Alfredo and it tasted as if it was scorched. We choked down a few bites before we alerted the manager. Mind you there was still 3/4 of the meal still on both of our plates so it's not as if we were trying to scam the place. We told the manager about our meal and since we had eaten more than just a bite he refused to work with us at all. Not even just a small discount. The place smelled like they had just painted and didn't let it dry before serving food. It's just not the same as it was. Just beware the new owner:manager is definitely not great with customer service. They have also downgraded their ingredient base. The garlic bread was just Texas toast soaked in garlic. . read more
