In a sea of bad chain restaurants and fast food, Chuckwagon is a welcome locally owned restaurant off the high way. We all had burgers and you can't go wrong with any of their burger creations. If I can give them a ten star I would. My father is an 88 year old veteran that is not too easy, usually doesn't eat out. As we traveled, we stopped with a very tired group and they treated us extra special. Our waitress was happy and extremely patient and helpful. I can't remember the last time I felt so welcome. They gave my dad an extra surprise which made his day. I can't tell you how much he talked about having such a good meal. It was very good. First, I rarely give reviews but felt the need to let others know this place is great. Restrooms have been remodeled & are very clean! Updated Farmhouse country feel to decor. Very clean, fast friendly service. We travel I80 often & usually grab fast food but felt the need to support local today. It was great & we will make this a must stop place! My teenage girls had brisket Mac & cheese, portion was huge. They will have another meal with the leftovers. They loved it. I had the Parm Burger Melt. Yum oh. Hubby had the Rueben, he said it was great, lots of sauerkraut. We planned to try the shakes but we were so full we didn't have room. Please stop by & try this locally owned business! Service was excellent. Very good and very hot coffee. I had sunrise burger with side of hash browns. Hash browns some of best I've ever had. Hubby has a burger with Mac and cheese. We came here after a long days work, tired and hungry. The best part was the milkshakes...they were quite good. It went downhill from there. Living in Kansas City, we know two things extremely well...BBQ and burgers. We have arguably the best of both in the country. Needless to say, if this burger place was in KC, it wouldn't last long. Maybe it was a bad night, but I kind of doubt it. Normally, a good burger place will ask you how you want your burger done...we were not asked, when we ordered. And I'm not sure how it made Iowa's top ten for burgers... My wife's French Toast tasted good she said, but looked like large pieces of Texas Toast with a small amount of egg in them. My burger along with our kids, weren't even as good as the French Toast. All three were dry, overcooked pieces of supposedly superior Iowa beef....ummmm, no. None of us finished our burgers, and mine will be left in the Motel...Mine was the "chili burger", which came out cold, and of not very good chili-quality...To double check the burgers, I tried all three, which were not good, and overcooked dry pieces of meat. The supposed "homemade fries" came in three varieties: over & under cooked (majority), and just right (vast minority), all slathered with enough grease to fill my engine....they were not good. And probably cooked in Peanut oil (we are not sure). My son has peanut allergies, took a look and determined they quite possibly were cooked it peanut oil. If so, in this day and age it should be noted, what with the number of food allergies out there. Our waitress seemed overwhelmed from the get-go, even though she only had a few tables...it took fifteen minutes for a refill of water, even though we asked three times. And this was with the excellent Manager making the shakes, clearing tables, and delivering orders (to the owner: your Manager is underpaid!!!). I would give this place another try, but my family ate there before and stated pretty much the same (this time we were with local relatives, and didn't want to offend them). The two is for the very average food, raised MIGHTILY by the excellent shakes...you should get the picture. Do yourself a favor, stop for a shake on a hot day on your road trip, tip them well, and move down the road...the shake is worth it. A wonderful location to meet family, great food, excellent service. Our family from Des Moines, Council Bluffs & Sioux City met there today. We had a table for 6 in the corner & spent almost 3 hours talking, laughing & enjoying a delicious meal. Our server was super, she provided excellent service while we ate then keep checking in on us. (Even told us we could stay until they closed, we got there at 11:00.) I would recommend this restaurant & have to other friends with family on I80. read more

Stopped here on the drive from Denver to Milwaukee. 2:00 PM on a Monday only customers in the place, so very easy to social distance. The waitress was great and friendly, and the chicken fried steak and french fries were sooooo good! Sent us on our way with leftovers and two slices of pie, the apple and the cookies and cream. Don't usually take the time to write reviews, but this restaurant hadn't had one in a while so I felt I needed to! This is a fantastic stop to support a "mom and pop" establishment! Very clean, even the restrooms. The food was delicious!!! We both had read on the reviews about the tenderloins, and being mid-westerners from "tenderloin" country we both decided to try them, especially since it sounded like they prepared theirs how I prepare mine (cracker breading). Was not disappointed at all, very tender as well! Also, the fries were true to their word too! My husband looked at me when I ordered fries and said, I can't believe you ordered those, but I told him the reviews said they were so good! Again, I normally will not waste calories on fries unless I already know how good they are, I ate every last one! Would love to know their secret!!! A must stop! Not sure where to start? First the service was outstanding. Exactly the service you hope to receive when you sit down. Genuine people who believe in the product and it shows in the high standard of service. Ok. Now the Food! I only wish I could have tried more things especially the chicken fried steak. If you are a French Fry person you should go for the fries alone. We went because we saw a write up on the pork tenderloin sandwich. It's like having a child words will never be good enough to describe it. My best words are get yourself some!!!!! I have never written a review before but the food and service was so amazing I felt compelled to do so. We had a rehearsal dinner for 35 people here on a very busy Friday night. We chose to order off the menu instead of having a buffet. The orders were taken and the delicious food started coming out within 15 minutes. Tonight we ventured out of the metro for dinner. A story road trip to Adair brought us to the Chuckwagon. We started with the combo platter, and although they were out of the fried pickles, they doubled up on the mozzarella sticks for us. The seasoning was amazing, and the onion rings were a great cross between the big rings I enjoy and the straws my husband likes. I'm guessing they were hand breaded. Then we both had small salads with meals...pretty unexciting iceburger, but good sized. Then I had the brisket sandwich with a Mike's Hard Lemonaid. It was delicious, and there was plenty of meat!!! My husband had the chicken fried chicken dinner with homemade mashed potatoes. This is where our experience skewed just a little sideways...there was a full fly in his potatoes. Very very sad, but Emily, our server was amazing. She whisked it away, and said they would remake the whole plate, over emphasizing how that never should have happened. Eh, it's summer in Iowa. Obviously he wasn't going to eat it, but it happens! We weren't mad or upset at all, but she was wonderful. As they remade his meal, she came back and told us she was comping our whole dinner. All of it. Drink, apps, my food, his meal. Shocked is an understatement! This is the kind of customer service that is above and beyond, and we were absolutely amazed. We truly tried to pay, but she wouldn't let us. We did pay for my drink, and left a very generous tip (I deliver pizza on the weekend, so I know how much that is appreciated!!) I read the reviews on the Chuckwagon Restaurant and had to try the brisket and Mac cheese, I was not disappointed (my plate is empty). Moist, sweet barbecue brisket on a heaping helping of Mac and cheese with Texas toast on the side. My husband had the tenderloin sandwich (no gristle) tender and flavorful (very filling all he could eat). I would definitely return here and you should definitely stop! Truly incredible! Although all I had was breakfast- Eggs, pancakes, sausages, it was quite simply one of THE BEST breakfasts I've ever had. Stopped in for late breakfast while on a cross country trip. Breakfast served until 11AM. Bloody Mary hit the spot but wasn't anything special. Coffee was great. Biscuits and gravy with hash browns with onions and cheese and over easy eggs. Food was tasty and cheese was Velveeta. Two eggs with bacon and wheat toast, delish. Salli was our server and was running her tail off! Other staff in restaurant but minimal assistance was given. Salli greeted, sat, served and bussed. Ladies room had only one stall operative. Was a good breakfast. Stop by if you're in the area and if Salli is your server, be sure to tip her well. She's gonna need another pair of running shoes soon! read more

The food was delicious (I loved their buffalo chicken salad on a taco shell), the service was always excellent and fast, and everyone at the restaurant is super friendly and professional.
