This is a combo restraint that is the both the Junction and Pizza Hut combined. We were promptly seated and our orders were taken. It took a while for our meals to arrive and for the most part they were very good. The steaks were great, however the baked potatoes were refrigerator cold inside. They did offer and provide a side of fries to make this right. The sheepherder was a good beef sandwich but the fry bread was dripping oil. As a note we were some of the last customers before closing and I think they had started shutting down the kitchen before we arrived. We were thankful that they were open and we got served. If we were to pass through the area again we would give it another try .

Our party of four was seated in a comfy booth, and drinks came out almost immediately. Quick service is always a win! That said, the fountain drink tasted a little off--maybe something was up with the mix--but it wasn't a deal-breaker. I ordered the Sheepherder (yes, you read that right!) and it was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend if you're up for something a little adventurous and flavorful. One hiccup: our meals didn't all come out at the same time, so half our table had to wait while the others were already halfway through. Not ideal, but we rolled with it. Overall, it was an alright experience with some standout moments. Grateful for the friendly service and good food--just a few tweaks.

I haven't visited a cafeteria in maybe ten years, it's certainly a rare occurrence and a fun diversion for some food! In this case, we went for breakfast since we were staying at the Lodge and opted to share a stack of pancakes. The cafeteria is a bit unique in that there's both a traditional line to pick up prepared food, but there's also a menu that can be ordered from for freshly cooked food. Blue Corn Pancakes, 3 ($10) - These are plate sized pancakes, really fluffy, cooked perfectly moist on the griddle. There's only a really slight blue color and a tiny bit of grittiness from blue corn flour. There's a bit of corn flavor, but it's otherwise resembles a regular pancake more than anything. I'd guess the mix is more wheat flour than blue corn flour. Still, even for regular pancakes, this is pretty good. It comes with three tubes of maple flavored corn syrup and some salted butter on top. We decided to revisit for dinner, mostly for convenience since we were staying at the Lodge. Homemade Mutton Stew w/ Frybread ($15) - This is a pretty simple stew, filled with vegetables, including hand chopped canned tomatoes, carrots, celery, and potatoes. There's some, not a ton, of cubed mutton, which quite tender and is surprisingly not as gamey as the smell would indicate. It's all in a broth that's heavily vegetable forward, followed by a tomato umami, and then finishing with a slight mutton gaminess. It's very simple, hearty fare and similar to most other food in the Navajo Nation, isn't seasoned much, so it could be considered bland. The stew comes with a choice of frybread or tortilla. We went with both, paying an extra $2.85 for the tortilla ala carte. The frybread is fried pretty well, giving a nice crisp edge. It's puffy and chewy on the sides, flatter in the center - there's nothing wrong with the base mix, but unfortunately the amount of fry oil contained in the frybread is terrible. I mean, there was basically an entire puddle of soot-speckled dark-colored old fryer oil right soaking right in the center of the frybread in a pool. Bleh. Tortilla ($2.85) - I believe this is the same base used as the frybread, but then baked instead of fried. It's like a thicker/handmade Mexican flour tortilla. It's thick and chewy, a bit bready, and has a dry char taste. Thunderbird Lodge Cafeteria is a decent spot for food in the area. There honestly aren't many restaurants in general in Chinle; this place serves food that isn't special by any means, but also isn't unpalatable. Just be aware that they follow the more traditional method of Navajo seasoning - basically no salt or spices. Bathrooms - Two larger ones with multiple stalls

This is also another one of those times I will be a devils advocate among my fellow yelpers and elites alike. Seeing most bad reviews here it seems to be due to long wait times and broken kiosk: But come on people, what does that have to do with the employees, the food or the restaurant? To a point yes but prime season when a bus and herd of tourists pulls up to the few employees thats available here in the middle of nowhere, what do you expect?? I came during off season, beautiful weather, definitely less people, no issues with kiosk or better yet some need to learn how to use mobile app to order their food like i did and got my food quick without issues. Compared to many McDonalds I have visited in many cities and states, this was actually one of my better experiences especially being in the middle of nowhere. Place was clean! Employees were super attentive to look around to clean and mop immediately as people left the tables. In Los Angeles, some employees can care less. The kids play area was also well kept and clean. They also have a family restroom in middle of restaurant close to kids play area. First time I ever seen that so thats a definite plus! My iced coffee was also made perfectly. So to the native employees here who truly take pride into their work, keep it up. My family acknowledge it and thanks you for keeping it clean for my child to have a safe place to play. Oh forgot to mention, they also have arcade games at each corner seats at the tables also!

Sunday, August 11, a little after 4:00 p.m., a friend and I stopped on our way home. I love the Chicken Pesto with Ciabatta bread. Well, this is what I ordered, but they were out of the bread. First strike, so I chose a different bread. Then I was going to add a drink and chips. I can't have sugar and I don't drink sodas, so ice tea is my drink of choice. Well, they were out of tea and was told they were not making anymore. So, then I proceeded to just get a cup of ice so I could get water. I'm traveling 8 hours home, a small free cup wasn't enough. So, they charged me for the cup. So, I asked her if she could at least give me the cup since they were out of everything I wanted. She didn't even apologize, she just said, "No, that's just how it is around here" Didn't care in the least that my first visit at this store will be my last. I'm sad the owner employs such disrespectful employees for their business. Hopefully Subway can send in an undercover boss to this store. It won't be in business very long with poor customer service and less than enthusiastic employees who don't want to make more tea or more bread.

This place has grown through the years, and now it is complete updated inside. From the simple walls from the past to faux brick walls and native American art and design. This simple American restaurant has aged nicely. They have updated menus, and updated POS systems that take cash, card and now, ApplePay. So tap your phone and your food will be securely paid for. Whoever upgraded the interior of this building deserves a free meal or two. The brick work, the wooden ceilings, and the artwork alone makes this a cozy place to devour your food. (I've attached photos). They have a clean patio section as well, if you prefer to eat outside in the warm sun as you watch cars pass by. If you're in a hurry, you can order by phone or drive-thru. Their menu is mostly American foods: burgers, bbq, chicken fish sandwiches, full dinners and stews. They also serve native American dishes, like navajo tacos, green chile stew, frybread and more. Desserts are a must, as I grew up eating their delicious ice creams (butterscotch being much favorite). They also carry iced coffee, smoothies and shakes. Making this a one-stop shop for any kind of hunger or thirst you're craving. Come by and support this small business, and skip all those nearby chain restaurants.
