Ordered the olive plate. It didn't specify warm or cold. (Didn't get a photo) but it came with a slightly warm toasted baguette, weird (because it didn't go with the olives) shredded vegan cheese; and the olives were ice cold. The different contrast made it an undesirable combination. Told the waiter, who was not very nice, even from the get go! He just took the plate without trying to fix or make it "right". He came back and I inquired, " so, you're not going to fix or rectify this " "uh, I took it off your bill" and walked away. Was not very welcoming. My friends even said so. There were interesting art pieces on the wall but didn't really look around. I got a pizza (vegan) it was meh... I don't really want pizza. We have a tremendous meal at the Cibo cafe during a short visit to Winnipeg in July. Even though it was a beautiful evening, we sat inside at a wonderful table for 4 in the back of the restaurant at a table with a view over the river. This section is elevated above the main floor and has wonderful golden leather chairs where I could have lingered for hours. The menu is broad with Italian, Spanish, and even African dishes so it's not hard to find something tempting. To start we shared some bruschetta-there are six varieties and you can choose 3. We LOVED the pear/prosciutto as well as the Brie/apple varieties but the standard tomato variety was also great. At 6 pieces to an order you need 4 people (like us) unless you're only having a salad (like my wife) as your main. We also tried the Piri Piri chicken-very flavorful, the paella-yummy, and the chicken and chorizo pasta. They serve cocktails and the margarita and the whiskey sour were both standouts for their quality even if they were a touch lite on booze. Our server was super friendly and helpful. Lovey location on the riverfront. Restaurant was full when we arrived for an impromptu Friday night dinner, but we found available seating at the bar. I enjoyed the beet and beef salad. Delicious flavors. The only drawback was that we would have enjoyed a 2nd drink but the bartender promptly brought us our bill when we finished our food. The Salmon with Garbanzo beans is in and of itself worth the visit to Winnipeg. This gem of a restaurant is situated on the bank of the Red River in a former pump house which supplied hydrants for the Winnipeg fire brigade. The fig bruscetta is out of this world. 2 Check-ins...one breakfast, one dinner, and three beers - maybe more! The place is located behind the Mere Hotel and it is a cool place. Not sure what it was before the turnover to a trendy and hip restaurant...cool nonetheless. That's where things end on cool side. The two meals I had were nothing stellar. My breakfast had burnt eggs and sausages that might rival IKEA on the dollar menu. The coffee was decent and at least the conversation with the server kept me going and ignoring breaky. Made a note to try elsewhere for the rest of my biz trip as the food did not merit the price. The next night, I had no place to go as I finished work late and didn't want to wander around the waterfront and at -17 degrees. I ended up at Cibo once again. Dinner was not any better, the small garden salad was drenched in dressing and I could not even taste anything but balsamic vinegar. Why oh why do some many people think that we are all on the edible vinegar diet fad!!!! The pizza was ok at best - I needed to eat so I finished half of it and asked that the rest be packed. The plan was to have a snack if needed. I didn't need it so I tossed it. If not for the great gal bartending that night and ample beers, the whole evening might have been shot. The local brews are pretty good but not good enough to make up for two Meh meals. Fool me once same on you...fool me twice shame on me...I guess it's all on me. :( 2.5 stars for me... I ordered the chicken burger and I know I will be having dreams about it tonight. I couldn't be more surprised by how juicy the chicken was and yet how crunchy it was. There was so much flavour in the entire burger. This doesn't even include the fresh French fries that came with it which I couldn't even finish. Had a really unprofessional experience trying to book a private event here. Had to push back my event due to poor communication and the price kept on changing. I originally inquired 3 weeks ago about a private event booking, took a week to get back to me after I inquired again. As an event planner in Canada, US and Europe, normally when you rent a restaurant, you only pay a minimum spend of food and drink. I inquired at 12 restaurants in Winnipeg that all got back to me quickly and the average cost was $4000-$4500 minimum spend-no extra fees. Cibo is the only restaurant in Winnipeg that rents out the space for $4500 plus you have to buy food and drink on top. When I tried to get clarification of the high price, she switched the pricing to $4500 minimum spend. Pleased with that response, I moved forward with the menu but wasted multiple weeks waiting for responses and not getting any replies or clarification. I finally sent my mom in (I don't live in MB) and she was told it was now $4500 just to rent plus having to buy food and drink. My mom was really frustrated by the different price and wasting our time. Then I called frustrated by the price difference and she said she made a mistake and it is just $4500 minimum. It is now Feb 17, 3 weeks wasted and I don't trust this venue. My event was supposed to be at the end of March and really like the look of this venue so was being patient, but now have to push it back due to poor communication and management. I would not recommend an event here until management is sorted. I booked a different spot that fast, easy and clear on pricing. read more

Nothing but outdated hype here. We held out going for a few years because it's such a small space with limited hours that you always needed a reservation for which we're not into. While it's easier to slip in than it used to be, I would suggest making a reservation to avoid waiting an hour plus. Now that we've been a few times, I really don't see what the big deal is. Maybe it's the location which is beautifully set on historic Waterfront behind the Mere hotel. Sadly, there is no waterfront seating but there is a small patio that forces you to look at the back of the hotel but is split with a nice walk/bike path. The food is hipster-style priced and the service is something you'd get at a local chain restaurant. After a few visits, we decided staff was practising to walk down a runway - no personality, frowny and looked like they were extremely annoyed to be there. While the food is ok, it's nothing special. It's the service that makes this experience subpar and for the price you're paying, you'll likely be pretty disappointed. read more

The salmon was cooked perfectly but was on top of stewed chickpeas and red peppers - which tasted like ratatouille- which did not pair well with salmon with garlic aioli. Cibo opened about a month or so ago in the former Amy Street Steam Plant (in 1923) at the foot of Rupert Avenue. Cibo is tucked right behind The Mere Hotel which is this funky colourfully striped box structure near the condos on Waterfront Drive. This eatery is associated with the hotel but oddly enough doesn't provide room service to the hotel. We didn't spot Cibo right away so the easiest directions is to park on Waterfront in front of the hotel on street parking and walk through the lobby and straight through and you'll get to the adjacent building. Apparently there's only a couple of spots for the eatery so it's easiest to park on the street. The long rectangular space has high ceilings, a bar on the right side when you walk in with a large open dining space in the back. There's lots of windows to give you a spectacular view (more so in the summer but even in the dead of winter) of the Red River and all that is Winnipeg. The vibe is fun, cool and relaxed where the menu offers up lots of bruschettas, antipasto, pasta, pizza, pannino and grilled items. Their wine menu could be improved a lot more as a space like this would definitely benefit from a wider wine selection and more by the glass. Service was knowledgeable, friendly and efficient. The best items were the bruschetta as there are 7 flavours to choose from plus a special. For $12 you can choose a combination of 3 - brie/apple/balsamic, mushroom herbed goat cheese and the artichoke/pesto/parmesan were all delish. Burger ($14) - beef patty with pickled shallot and reggiano aioli was a let down as the patty was overcooked and completely dried out with too much aioli and the matchstick fries were soggy and stuck together like hashbrowns. The lamb and mint pizza ($18) has ground lamb, shallot, parsley and mint. The crust is thin crispy with a very slight chew. The pizza needed more flavour as there wasn't much to the ground lamb meat and there was no discernible mint flavour. Overall, I would go back and try other items and their breakfast too. But definitely a good place to have a drink and some eats in a cool space especially if you're going to the MTC or Concert Hall for a show. Really great to see how busy this place was on a week day evening in the first month of opening. ***** I've gone back 2 more times since my first visit. Sunday lunch was quiet and breakfast ends at 11 am so we had to order off the regular menu. I loved the carbonara $14 - double smoked bacon, yolk, chili and pecorino. I don't usually order pasta as it's not a fave for me but this dish was pretty damn good. It wasn't as heavy as a traditional carbonara though I am not saying this dish was light in calories by any means. There was a nice heat to this dish and all the components were just perfection. Get this one. The spanish chicken panino $14 - paprika, chicken, spanish goat cheese, peppers. Excellent sandwich. Fries were still soggy. Third visit was a friday lunch - it was very busy with nearly all tables taken. I had the pear and prosciutto thin crust pizza $16 - there was fresh arugular sprinkled on top of the pear and prosciutto and blue cheese. A decent pizza with good flavour but crust was not the same as my last visit and tasted more thin and cracker like. Service has been good and decently knowledgeable. I love the space here. read more

Here is yet another place out of many I tried during Le Burger Week. This place has great well thought out dishes. They offered the previous years burger on the menu as well as the new burger for this year. It was like walking through the doorway to Narnia. I was introduced to the White Witch as soon as I bit into the burger. I completely forgot there were fries; I just stuffed my face and mumbled to Tilda Swinton about the magical taste sensations taking me over. She laughed at my rambling and then she cursed me because she is evil. Am I overly theatrical and ridiculous? Who knows, but I need to try everything on the menu. read more

I found the atmosphere to be very good, location is alright but is an automatic pass in my books considering the parking isn't so bad considering it's in downtown and you get a good view of the Provencher Bridge and not to mention the Human Rights Museum, but also don't forget they placed it in an old Winnipeg Building which, like I said, makes the atmosphere exquisite; also it's got a park-like feel when you're coming and going which makes for a nice thing to do after a date. But the big fault here is the food portions as I found them to be quite small for my liking, and in all restaurants, food is a big factor to all them and very much overpriced for those portions, but I do admire the effort the cooks put into the food and how kind the servers are. read more

You know, it would have been 4. Good dinners, we were at the Mere during the Fringe Festival and it was great to have this place to have drinks and bruschetta and such, friendly servers, great service. But we went for breakfast one morning and everything went wrong. We were seated. Lots of tables with people with nothing but water. 5 minutes later, nothing changed, including us not having been acknowledged or being offered even water. Hungry... we went to Forth instead and had fantastic food. Just walked out, no one bothered to say anything. Maybe they didn't even notice we were gone... maybe they were so overstretched, they were happy about it. So, 1 for breakfast, 4 for dinner, 3 because don't go in the morning I guess but I'd say go in the evening still. read more

Breakfast is reasonable, the salads good, but the blackened chicken club was just great. It is a generous, succulent chicken breast with Cajun spices. Some comments included "I could make a better pizza at home and I don't have ingredients to make pizza.", "A frozen Safeway pizza is way better then the cardboard I just ate." The capper being "TOO MUCH BREAD RELATED COURSES!" It is an Italian restaurant , sooo. The view was good and my drink was alcoholic. The water glasses were a danger though. Cibo is an upscale cafe located on Waterfront next to the Red River. It's an excellent place for business meet-ups, dates and casual hangout! The menu selection is limited but the food is generally pretty decent. My go-to/favourite items on the menu are: Bruschetta - must have!! Cibo Pizza Carbonara Cibo serves shoe string fries. The fries are very skinny to the point that they remind me of Hickory Sticks. They are alright the way they are, however, they get quite greasy after having a few. We had the Beef Bourguignon Poutine at one of our visits and we would not recommend it. The stew beef, cheese curds and gravy are great, however, because of the nature of the skinny fries, they sink straight to the bottom of the gravy so you are left with a soupy bowl of poutine. The poutine would be much better if it were to be served with thicker fries. Overall, Cibo is quite a neat place to visit! Check it out if you have never been! read more

Expect to wait a long time for service. We sat on the patio for lunch and nearly took almost two hours from start to finish. We tried their speciality burger for Burger Battle and it was very dry and bland with a crunchy old bun. Our fries came out soggy and had to ask the server three times just to get our bill. I came in with a friend on a Friday evening at 5 without a reservation. The restaurant itself was almost empty but the hostess informed us she could give us a table until 7 and asked us if that was enough time. We were seated and greeted promptly with an offer of the daily features. They sounded good but we decided to share a few items from the menu. Arancini, seafood pizza and the bruschetta. I selected the fig and ricotta, Brie and Apple, and the mushroom goat cheese. I started with a Rosie cocktail and finished with a glass of Malbec. My friend stuck to her usual Caesars which came with pickles, olives and lime and a smoked paprika flavoured salt rim. The cocktails were great. I wish they provided a plate for the olive pits, discarded stir sticks and like wedge. There were three arancini on the plate on top of a bed of sautéed tomatoes and onions. The bruschetta was delicious and in my opinion still well worth the money. Two of each flavor and they are on long slices of delicious crostini. Can't go wrong. I missed the grilled vegetable crostini I had the summer before. The seafood pizza was also excellent. Loads of great toppings on a barely there flakey thin crust. Service was attentive and not at all intrusive. Everyone in the restaurant was friendly, welcoming and overall contributed to a nice evening. Congrats to the management, kitchen and staff at Cibo. Service was supbar. Went with a three friends and we were seated promptly in the very nice dining area. Ambiance was modern and cozy. We started off with some great appetizers. Helpful tip the beef bourguignon poutine is definitely a shareable item, if not a full-on meal. The bruschetta choices were great. As our appetizers were nearing completion a friend still had 2 bruschetta she was working on, but the waitress took away all our appy plates including hers, (weird). Also, the servers were slow at times with water and bills. They all just seemed not to keen on server etiquette, ie. reaching over water glasses and stuff. My wife and I were in Winnipeg for the World Cup and ended up at the Forks park around sundown, looking for a good option. Although the map in Yelp left us hanging, we figured it out and arrived. Place was packed, but they were able to seat us within 10 minutes. Atmosphere was great, service was great...the only thing keeping me from a 5star review was the food. It was good, but not great. I had the bolognese, which was quite good. My wife had the seafood pizza, which I would give a 3/5. Flourless chocolate cake was yummy. My father passed away a couple weeks ago, yesterday was his birthday and I wanted to commemorate him by having a nice meal at Cibo. My partner's birthday was also 2 days prior so we were celebrating that as well. We looked on google and saw Cibo was open until 11pm. I went onto the website at 9pm and booked a reservation for 10pm.  30 minutes later I was called by Raeann from the restaurant. She told me that the kitchen closes at 10:15pm. I told her that I would try to come earlier so I could still have a dinner to celebrate my father. On the way we pulled the menu up on our phones and decided what we wanted before arriving so it would be quicker easier on the staff. We only ordered apps so it would be quicker for them too. We entered the restaurant at 10 on the dot and were greeted by Raeann. Before sitting us at our table she abruptly told us we had 5 minutes to place our orders because the kitchen was closing in 15 minutes. While walking us to our table Raeann loudly said "It's been slow tonight, the cooks have been in the kitchen for an hour and a half with nothing to do and we wanted to shut down early" In a passive aggressive attempt to guilt us. (This was an hour before Cibo closed) We sat at our table feeling incredibly guilty and placed our order immediately, as to not make the staff wait on us. After placing our order we noticed Raeann walking around cleaning, shaking her head and rolling her eyes at us. She was also standing at the bar, complaining about us with a woman that had blonde hair and was counting money. When our first plates arrived Raeann brought them to us. She slammed them down onto the table, didn't give us eye contact, didn't say anything to us and quickly walked away.  We started nibbling on our first plates, feeling incredibly rushed and uncomfortable. While waiting for our last plate to arrive, Raeann was cleaning up around us, closing the blinds to obstruct our view of outside, shutting off the TVs, and vacuuming near us. All while shaking her head at us and rolling her eyes. (This was 40 minutes before you were set to close) She brought us our last plate of food, again she sat it down in an aggressive manor, didn't give us eye contact, and didn't say anything to us. She stormed away, rolling her eyes and shaking her head again. At that point my partner and I were so uncomfortable we decided we should leave. I grabbed my jacket, and quietly walked out of the restaurant. I am not exaggerating when I say I was in tears. My father had just died, it was his birthday, I was trying to have a meal at a nice establishment to commemorate him and share memories. Instead I was treated awfully by a staff member and was made so uncomfortable I had to leave. Before knowing we even wanted to leave, Raeann approached my partner (at 10:35 - approx 25 minutes before Cibo closed) she asked him if he wanted boxes to take the food because Cibo was closing. She brought the boxes, tossed them on the table, didn't say anything to him and walked away. While paying, he spoke to another waitress and explained the situation since there were seemingly no managers in the building. She explained that Raeann had been called in for 3 shifts because another employee had the flu. That is no excuse for her behavior. I used to work in the service industry for 10 years holding management positions. I have never in my life made a complaint about service. Normally I heavily sympathize for service workers because of my service experience. I have been incredibly frustrated with customers and have never in my life treated someone that way. Our evening was ruined by the interactions we had with the staff. We had to go home and eat our $19 charcuterie out of a takeout box to commemorate my father instead of inside the restaurant. I have been to Cibo about 10 times and I have never been treated this way. I will not be back. I was made far too uncomfortable and I will be too uncomfortable in the future because of my experience there and I don't want risk being treated that way by her again. read more

The wife and I had always wanted to check out this place so we called a ride share and off we went. First thing to go wrong was when we were walking around the side of the Mere Hotel to get to the restaurant you could see that the walkway was shiny and slick and had not been salted or sanded and sure enough I slipped and almost ended up on my backside. So now I'm kind of pissed off but put it aside and we go in and get seated. The waitress comes around with ice water and we ask if there's a sampler dish of appetizers or whatever and we're told that there wasn't. OK ... so we order a couple of cocktails and while we wait wife and I take a drink of water. I don't know how to explain it but the water tasted off ... it was like drinking something that was old or musty. I looked at the water in the glass and among the ice cubes I could see little pieces of some black substance floating around. So, we fished out the black gunk and put it on a menu and at that point I'm fed up with this place. We show it to the waitress and she says she's going to show it to her manager. I tell her to cancel the drinks and that we're leaving. There was no apology or offer of a free drink or whatever. So we left. Bad experience. read more

Quite possibly the worst experience I've had. I ordered a club sandwich for dinner through Skip and was extremely disappointed with what I received. The club is $17 and thought it was a bit pricey but I was curious to try it. When the food arrived and I saw what was given, I was completely shocked. They put an embarrassingly small piece of chicken on bread and called it a sandwich. The one half of the sandwich had maybe 3 bites of chicken and a mouthful of bread. The other half, with a bigger piece of chicken than the first, was just a surprising. It looked like they threw scraps together! read more

Located right behind the hip Mere Hotel is this sexy little spot. Really a GREAT one two punch for a night visiting Winnipeg. The waitresses are SEXXXY and cool.
