Working at a food pantry truly gives you life perspective. If you aren't hungry and have a place to…read morego tonight, you're blessed, something I always try to keep in the back of my mind. You'd be surprised as to how many people don't have those luxuries (and yes, even people in Carmel). Families come into the food pantry all day and they're guided through the fruits, veggies, frozen food, frozen meats, breads, and dessert sections of the food pantry. Based on the number of family members they have to feed, they can select different amounts of each food item. The food pantry is often in need of those fresh fruits and veggies (especially in winter when they aren't getting the leftovers from the summer farmers market down the road). Toiletries are also always needed: deodorant, diapers, toilet paper, soaps, shampoo/conditioner, etc. Check their hours, then you can donate foods or sign up to volunteer and it's much appreciated.

The program matches college graduates with high school students who are typically going to be first generation college students and whose families' income falls within a range similar to the requirements for the 21st century scholars program. I was matched with a wonderful scholar who needed a rematch in her sophomore year because her previous mentor had to withdraw from the program. We took art classes, visited colleges, explored some parks, museums and ate out at fun restaurants. We also worked on college applications and stressed waiting to hear back...and I'm thrilled to say my scholar just started this summer at IU!! I'm looking forward to exploring Bloomington with her on my upcoming visits! If you're looking for a volunteer experience that will give you the chance to build a relationship and help make a difference for a young person I highly recommend Starfish! Time commitment needs to be regular, at least twice a month face to face with texting and calls in between, but can be anytime and anywhere that works for you and your scholar. I'm signed up to be matched with a new freshman in addition to staying on as a mentor with my now post Starfish college student. I'm hoping some other Yelpers will join me!

Based out of Second Presbyterian Church, Northside Food Pantry offers food support to Washington Township residents up to twice monthly and is open three days per week. In order to utilize Northside Food Pantry, you need to take in a bill or some other mail received within the last 30 days indicating your address within Washington Township (zip codes 46220, 46228, 46240, 46250, 46260 or North of 38th Street in 46205 or 46208). Northside Food Pantry utilizes quite a few volunteers for positions such as client intake, client liaison, data entry, car loader, food delivery processing, and off-loading for Nora donations. Northside Food Pantry receives its items from a variety of sources including public donations, area residents, area businesses, Gleaners Food Bank, and others. I had the opportunity to visit the food pantry recently and was impressed with their organization and the variety of healthy foods available including fruits and vegetables actually grown by the children and youth of Second Presbyterian Church. They also offer a variety of personal care supplies including the always needed diapers. I was also impressed that they offered similar personal care items for adults in need. The process has changed due to the pandemic and individuals are actually served in their vehicles. It's an effective, efficient process that seems to work well. Church leaders are actively involved in the church pantry and it's not uncommon to see Senior Pastor Chris Henry driving the Northside Food Pantry truck. I also saw that they even had some books available for the kids! Northside Food Pantry serves approximately 17,000 people annually and over 400 families monthly.

Much of the food I received was expired or no longer edible. As the food accumulated and continued…read moredeteriorating, I spent hours sorting through it, trying to determine what was safe to eat. I continued accepting the deliveries because I was confused and was trying to do the right thing. I should have spoken up sooner, but that does not change the condition of the food I received. This got to the point last Thursday where I was picking up a pineapple that was left at my home- the result tore up my back and now I am in incredible pain! And any kind of movement hurts. I'm telling you this not only for my own benefit, but because other elderly or vulnerable people may not be able to inspect everything carefully and could become ill.

Indiana Children's Wish Fund

The Indiana Children's Wish Fund grants wishes to Indiana children ages 3-18 who have been…read morediagnosed with a life-threatening or terminal illness. They were established in 1984, a year after my graduation from high school, and children are referred by parents, nurses, social workers, doctors, etc. To date, they've granted over 3,200 wishes with most wishes costing an average of $8-10,000. As someone who has, quite literally, grown up with a life-threatening illness that was considered terminal when I was born, I've long admired the work of Indiana Children's Wish Fund and even presented an award from my own charitable efforts to one of their active fundraisers. It was at that time that I became increasingly aware of their work and aware of local media personalities who are involved in supporting it. Fun facts - the most common request is a Disney World trip for the entire family. However, other wishes have included meeting former Presidents, the Pope, bringing a relative all the way from Ethiopia for a visit, and one young wish recipient even ended up being an extra in a Tom Cruise film. These Wish coordinators are really quite amazing and creative. When I was young and not expected to survive (I'm in my 50s now - I guess they were wrong), I sort of had a pre-wish (since the organization didn't exist) when it was arranged for me to meet my idol - Mario Andretti. It's an experience I've never forgotten and I still cheer for an Andretti in every race where there is one. I was in awe of this experience and I'm in awe of and strongly believe in this organization's mission to provide some light and love for children facing life-threatening illnesses and/or terminal illnesses. The Indiana Children's Wish Fund is a 501c3 non-profit organization and they're constantly fund-raising. While the pandemic has certainly impacted wishes, they do continue and children continue to be in need. Terminal illness doesn't really slow down for a pandemic. They are known as a fiscally responsible organization and, perhaps most importantly to me, also a truly sincere and compassionate one. They're undeniably one of Indiana's true non-profit gems. They are based in the Castleton area, however, they grant wishes statewide.

I've been looking for a coffee table for a while, and I found three different ones that I would have taken home with me immediately. The tables -- and all of the furniture -- were quality, made of solid wood and many of them were mid-century style. I did end up buying one of the coffee tables, and I'm very happy with it! I'm actually planning on going back soon to check out what else they have, because I was so laser-focused on coffee tables. The person who worked there was very kind and helped me carry and load my table into my car.

They do not run big outlet locations like Goodwill where they dump donations in huge bins for people to root through and damage. You can drop off items behind their store, or in off hours bring them into the store. They so not spend tons of money on fancy TV commercials and fancy stores. Their profits go to directly serve homeless people and those with substance addiction problems. I personally know one of the people they helped to turn their life around. Please make the little extra effort to go to their thrift store which is east of the super Walmart on 96th to shop and donate. Help this small organizarion continue to do good work in our community.

This location is on the same side of the road as the Walmart and in the same plaza as the Petco, Platos, and the Autoparts store. The staff are super nice and there are a lot of volunteers walking around as well. I have found several things that are new with tags (priced accordingly), tons of name-brand goods, and there is rarely that funky thrifted smell that permeates everything you get from the WMS. They have everything from clothes to furniture/household goods to really nice jigsaw puzzles. Everything is super easy to find. Prices here at the Mission Store are a little higher than places like Goodwill, but every purchase supports the Wheeler Mission by providing meals and funding for training to their residents. There are also hand-made candles and other wares that the residents make while staying at Wheeler for purchase. Once while shopping I noticed it was busier than normal and the associate explained that they allow Wheeler residents to come and shop for what they need to get back on their feet. COOL!

They shortened hours on Labor Day. From the outside, the place seems small with bigger items typically outside to grab drivers' attention. They have a variety of (new and used) merchandise including furniture. It is like a Goodwill store but more organized. I was told that the items were donated, and they do not have sales. I bought a lap desktop with folding legs and section holders; it would be so helpful especially when I tend to find writing utensils that have fallen between the couch cushions. Also, a green long-sleeve dress shirt caught my eyes so I had to go look at it, which happened to fit me; how could I resist buying this name-brand, attractive shirt! I used that coupon for the shirt, so I got more savings than for the desktop. There seem to be a couple of spots I would like to try to wash out of the shirt. So both $5 or less. Sold! When I got home, I realized that maybe the shirt was new because there was a spare button attached. I will see if the ink on the sleeve comes out. I think the store changed its name to Noble Cause (but still led by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul) and did change their hours to M, T, Th, and F 9-3 with Wed. and Sat. only to serve from the Society of St. Vincent de Paul's food pantry. I would return when and if convenient but definitely if I get a coupon.

As a reseller the China and dish prices were so high nobody could get them in the hands of a collector at a decent price. Please revisit that and try not to compete with goodwill. I also noticed that usually the place is packed but this time hardly nobody was there and it may be the prices. Since it's hard for me to get here because of no evening hours if it continues I won't be back on a regular basis, it's sad because money goes to a decent cause but things need to be bargain prices not boutique.

I didn't think that this particular location will have many good offerings. However I have found the best items ever at this particular location. There is definitely been some hidden jewels that are brought to this location. For instance I found a beautiful gala dress for only $9 here which retail price is about $100. This dress is definitely consignment store quality. My friends have raved about this dress and I tell them I got it from the 38th Street Goodwill! Currently I am rocking a beautiful green trench coat from Saks Fifth Avenue which was also $10 from this particular location. I would have never thought I would be rocking a Saks Fifth Avenue coat because I definitely can't afford it on my own, but Goodwill 38th Street made it possible. Lastly they have some great winter scarves that go great with my sweater collection to liven up my wardrobe. I would definitely recommend putting this location on your 1st Saturday Goodwill list. Don't underestimate what you can find in this store. I would suggest coming every so often outside of first Saturday's to find some good buys. I have seen consistently that the furniture quality here is not that great, so I'm usually looking for clothes and shoes here.

Sometimes coming in off the street isn't something the veteran is interested in or prepared for so HVAF even helps to meet the needs that they can for those who remain outside. This center also has a partnership with IPS and helps students find additional educational help, as well as a safe, quiet place to study. If you are having issues with your children, tell Miss Sherry because she is going to give you everything you need to rectify the situation! I have never heard Miss Sherry say, I don't know how to help you! Miss Sherry has the resources you need to succeed! All you have to do is DO THE WORK! When I needed them, they made room for me from the Eskenzia hospital also beautiful nurses and social workers. Wheeler Mission has strict program for women to have enough time to get on their feet also mom with children. However, bc I use a walker like other women. I suggest to them not to have the elders and walkers residents stand so long for mealtime. Also the elders 60 and above has to rush eating. I worked nursing homes over 20 something years. Elders can choke easily on their food. They can't swallow like young people can. The meals sometimes are bowl cereal and coffee for grown adult women. I'm sure showing a net income of public records 82 millions dollars. They can serve the homeless women still be hungry. Clients have to keep the building clean. My only gripe about that. It's not giving clients time to work on their issues. Therapy, counseling mental health healing. Also gripe from 7:30 A.M. to 4 P.M when the dorms open back up. No real positive activities going. Some women are been on job skills, need education for new technology world training. Instead of having clients clean do workers paid jobs. Clients need classes, sewing, crotchet something positive, arts crafts to keep hope alive in their trauma filled lives. Other than that. Wheeler Mission is safe, women keep your personal items close to you. Staff is overworked need to hire more staff. They get drain but yet women on a God Mission. Remember the women are human beings not a building. People aren't giving bc of the building. They are giving bc of the human being clients inside of the building. Feed Jesus Christ children, sheeps flocks. Also in dining area. Wheelchair and walkers should be seated in line first. The first two front table should be designated for handicap accessible. Pitcher of water should be place on their tables. It was challenging having a walker and carrying your meal tray with a drink on it without spilling it all over the place. People first! If no homeless clients. There's no jobs for case management. Speaking of case managers. Ms. Q is the greatest. See got her own GODLY Gospel rap out as well. Ladyqmusic YouTube. Oh please donate lots of sugar so the women can have two scoops of sugar in their coffee if they need it. If you drink coffee black that's one thing. However. I love two scoop than bitter coffee All the women I met at Wheeler Mission. I pray in the name and by the blood of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. He will continue to watch over his flock, sheeps his babies. After my baby Natisha Vernelle Lax at Marion County Jail. She wanted to help take of her mom. With history of two strokes, heart afibs and kidney renal failure. I use walker for the severe arthritis in my right knee. Keep my balance from falling. I call that a perfect trifecta. All the folks here are just really friendly and upbeat. I have never encountered a rude employee/volunteer here. Got leftovers from a company catering, or bought too much groceries, or run a business that may generate food waste? Bring what you cannot use to Second Helpings. No donation is too small or too big. Rest assured no food goes to waste. What they cannot use, they will pass on to other organizations. They do have guest speakers available if you want to do a food drive for them or inspire others. I try to attend their events like the Souper Bowl... Be prepared, this event is a mad house, but so much fun... Soup stations all around the building, try one, try all and then vote for your favorite. Some soups are also available for purchase. Non-alcoholic drinks are usually provided. So next time you don't know what to do with food, your time or money, consider donating or volunteering for this organization. Well worth it.
