Five stars across the board! To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect of a local production of such a silly show. I'm happy to report the entire experience exceeded our expectations! It was our first time visiting the Shakespeare Company and the organization acknowledged that in several ways, from emailing us earlier in the week to answer any questions we might have, to the letter on our seat welcoming us and offering $20 off our next show. We saw The Play That Goes Wrong with is a silly (in the best way) and energetic romp with loads of slapstick humor and some audience participation. We often go to big broadway productions, which we love, but it was such a unique experience seeing a show in a small theater. No seat is more than 20 feet from the stage so you really get drawn in. Another wonderful evening at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company! My daughter and I see a couple/few plays here a year and always have a great time. We saw Mary Shelley's Frankenstein this weekend and the cast were superb, as usual. Great performances by all and a good set design as well! Each show has a signature drink and this play even came with an optional Frankenstein glass upgrade. We were there early and still missed out of them. But what a cool idea! The staff are always so friendly and helpful. There's plenty of parking around the theatre and a lot of restaurants in walking distance also. So, it's easy to make an evening out of dinner and play and, if inclined - cocktails and music afterwards at one of the bars/clubs that are also within walking distance of the theatre. read more

The Otto M. Budig Theater is a lovely theater located at 1195 Elm Street in the heart of downtown Cincinnati. It is a short walk to SCPA, Washington Park, restaurants, and plenty of parking. My God daughter and I came to see an early, World Premier of the stage play Kindred Spirits. First of all, as soon as you walk into the theater, you feel both comfortable and inspired at the same time. The esthetics are modern but not austere. The staff are welcoming and very friendly...from the guard at the door to the bartender/barista to the ushers that showed us to our seats. We got premium seats in the lower gallery, row F. But honestly, there's not a bad seat in this theater! We really enjoyed Kindred Spirits! It was a wonderful play! We loved the stage props, lighting, and decorations. The actors are very talented, also! We laughed the entire time! We haven't seen the first play in the series, but it was good enough to stand on its own. The actors were so good and I believe that anywhere you sit in the theater, you're able to hear the actors and have a good viewing as there are no microphones used and the seats are at a slope to allow the audience to see clearly. A beautiful theater in the heart of downtown Cincinnati, just steps away from Music Hall and Washington Park. The lobby is wrapped in windows for a beautiful view of life outside the theater doors while you are awaiting your performance. There is a small lobby bar that provides sweet treats as well as libations. Bathrooms are roomy and decorative as well as inclusive. Staff are very friendly and helpful. My recent performance was Kindred Spirits, and it was fantastic! The set was stunning and had some very special effects you do not want to miss! The actors did an excellent job with this unique comedy based on the characters and story of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit. There was lots of laughter and even some audience participation in the form of shout-outs at some plot twists in the story. read more

Everything I know about Cincinnati's theater culture I get from a good friend who lives and works in Cincinnati. It's a thriving culture. Go see something at the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, but check out what else might be out there. They do Shakespeare in the Park in Cincinnati, and I am disappointed that I wont be in town to see it (Hamlet!). I was in town for a conference. One of my colleagues suggested that we get a group together to see "The Play that Went Wrong." It was great! I was nonstop laughing during the entire play. The theater is intimate. There is seating down below, very close to the stage. My seat was in the balcony, where I could easily see everything that transpired on stage. The seats were comfortable and padded. There are restrooms upstairs and downstairs, located mysteriously around the corner. Downstairs there is a bar for patrons who need to get lubed before the show. As a visitor from out of town, I had no car, so I cannot say what the parking situation is, but if you are anywhere near the free trolley, it runs through the theater district and right past the Shakespeare Theater. read more

Part comedy but partly very realistic, Wrecking Ball is tackling a serious issue that had been 'swept under the rug' in Hollywood for so many years. Wonderful experience! Our company rented the theater for an afternoon business meeting and happy hour. We hosted approximately 125 people. The seating allowed the space to feel more intimate and relaxed than reserving a hotel conference room, and we were able to bring in an AV company to assemble curtains, lighting and microphones. During breaks and after our meeting our guests could get drinks at their bar. It was a fantastic happy hour and the team was ready to handle our crowd. Beautiful bathroom spaces and wall designs. We took a shuttle from our hotel so I'm not able to speak to the parking situation although you'd likely need to hunt for street or garage parking. Payment for the event space was easy to make. A credit card charge is a 4% up charge and very reasonable. read more

Have attended several performances here now for a date night or showing visitors the best that Cincy has to offer. It's located on the corner Elm & 12th across the street from Washington Square Park. Street parking is limited but there is an underground parking garage below the park. The building is beautiful, not surprising considering it is located next to more Cincinnati gems. These semi circle stage means a great view from nearly every seat. Attended the preview night of The Rewards of Being Frank and it was fantastic! Dialogue was well written, humorous (seriously did not expect to laugh so much!) and 2 hours passed by too quickly. read more

We watched the preview of 'The Taming of the Shrew' on the first day. Thank you Bailey (Yelp Community Manager at Cincy) for inviting us to this event! We moved to the area about a week ago from Iowa and this was our first fun outing. To top it off it's the beginning of our 5 yr wedding anniversary week! This was a perfect activity to get things started. We loved the location of the theater as it's in the middle of the city. There is an open air parking lot right next to the theater and event parking was $10 for 4 hrs. There is a bar inside the theater that serves alcoholic and a few non-alcoholic beverages. There is no food, so plan to eat before or after the show. The show was 2.5 hrs in length with a 15 min intermission, so it's good to plan meals around it. Speaking of the show itself, I loved the detailed consumes representing the era the story is based on. The actors we enthusiastic, energetic and put in all the efforts to do justice to the story. There was some comic addition to the show to add special interest for the audience. I personally have not seen a lot of theater so I can't quite comment on the quality of the production, however, we had a good time getting out and doing something outside of our regular entertainment choices. read more

Always a great night at the theatre! I've attended two performances, as of this writing, at the Cincy Shakes Theatre. Both happened to be Yelp! Elite Squad events. The two I've attended were "Every Christmas Story Ever Told", in 2021 and "The Living Dead", in 2022. In both of my visits, the cast has been fantastic. Personality diversity of characters can be a bit challenging but when you have the right people in the right places, it can all come together nicely. Both the performances that I've seen have been great examples of just that. Each actor portrayed their role in a very captivating manner. Simply put - If I met any of them on the street, I would have a hard time believing that they weren't the character they played in this performance. A job well done by all. If you've been to the Cincinnati Shakespeare theatre before, you already know that this is an outstanding venue. First off - There is truly not a bad seat in the house. Playing an in-the-round setting, with about a 3/4 round audience, it really doesn't matter where you sit. Small and intimate, this theater really brings an in-the-moment feel to it as an audience member. You feel as if you're right there, in the room within each scene. I would be surprised that, because of this intimacy, at times audience members aren't inclined to spontaneously answer a question or project a response during a dialogue. Taking a small space and making it "big" is something that Cincinnati Shakespeare has a real knack for. The transformation of taking this small space and taking your mind "there" is a real sticking point to the Cincy Shakes crew. Beautifully, creatively and thoughtfully designed sets really bring you into the world that the actors are in. It always amazes me to see these transformations from show to show. The crew at Cincy Shakes always treats the Yelp! Elite Squad well and I've found them all to be nothing but helpful and very pleasant to interact with. Aside from performance, also note that Cincy Shakes has a full bar in their large lounge/lobby. You can get a drink and socialize before the performance and you're welcome to bring a drink in with you during the performance as well. Each seat has a drink holder on the back of the seat in front of you. This way you won't be holding your drink the entire time or worrying about kicking it over. The parking situation is actually not hateful at Cincy Shakes. There are plenty of Pay-to-Park lots or you can easily park on the street with Cincy EZPark. For a two-hour performance, you're parking on the street for about $5. There is a valet option at $25, should you prefer this. Would I go back? Without a doubt. This is the second Yelp! Elite Squad event that I've attended at Cincy Shakes and I will always try to make myself available for more. Talking with some of the other audience members, I will remind myself to keep updated on the new performances throughout the year at Cincy Shakes as I've heard great things about some of the performances that I've not seen. read more

We almost didn't make it in for our tickets to "Pride and Prejudice" due to some severe weather ... but I'm SO glad we braved the rain and arrived just in time for the show! This was our first time visiting the Otto M. Budig Theater, despite driving past their Shakespearean pig several times. There's a parking lot right next door, so if you're running a bit behind like we were, you should be able to find a spot no problem. The lobby/entrance to the theater is absolutely beautiful. They had a stunning flower wall on display ... and a cute bar in the center with various wine, beer, and soda offerings. I've been to larger theaters in the past, which made me appreciate how intimate and thoughtful this space is. The theater itself is just as beautiful, and with only a few rows of seats, such a cozy setting for a play. Our seats were literally on the stage ... and seeing a show from this angle makes me never want to go back to being in the regular audience again! "Pride and Prejudice" was wonderfully done ... the cast was creative and likeable, and had so much fun with a classic that can be a bit stuffy at times. I've seen nearly all of the movie adaptations, and read the original novel, and I have to say this was one of my favorite takes on such a beloved story. My fiancé, on the other hand, didn't know the story at all going into it, and he was surprised to find that he loved every minute! If you can snag a seat on stage for any CSC production, I highly recommend doing so ... we had a few interactive moments with the cast during the show, and that really stuck in our minds as something we'll remember for a long time! If you're wondering whether you should purchase tickets to a show here ... just do it already! Even if you're not into Shakespeare, there's something in these shows that anyone will love. read more

What a lovely time my mom and I had here! First, the interior has multiple photo-worthy set ups. Even the bathroom was aesthetic and clean. I arrived a little early to order a glass of cabernet sauvignon and the bartender gave the opportunity of prepaying for a drink to be brought during intermission. I got a snack of delicious malted milk balls as well. The play itself, Pride and Prejudice, was absolutely delightful. I didn't expect to laugh out loud as many times as I did. They also had a cast of 9 people who alternated into different characters. The range these actors have is incredible! The theater room is intimate, so you get great views of the emotion on the actors' faces and some actors will interact with audience members on end isles! It's a great place to bring family, a date, or friends. I am excited to bring more people back here with me. I especially am looking forward to their upcoming performance of Little Women! I am so glad I got the chance to discover this place and to make fun evening memories. Consider me a new modern Shakespeare fan! read more

"Trouble in Mind" is a thought-provoking show that is dark yet humorous. They pulled this dark comedy off. We were lucky enough to attend a pre-opening show for young professionals. Best play I have ever seen. August, Osage County was funny, heartbreaking, and gut wrenching all at once. The set is amazing and the actors even better. The story follows a dysfunctional family with enough issues that anyone can relate to. I will warn you that this is the longest play I have ever seen to though, 3 acts. After the second act many audience members were unsure if the play was over, and a handful did leave. But I am so glad I stayed. If you go, just be prepared for a longer night than normal. read more

I have now seen four productions here, and I don't have the words to express my enjoyment. The current A Comedy of Errors is a hilarious production, with songs thrown in just to make it more special. Careful acting with gestures and intonation make the Elizabethan English pretty easy to follow, so little of the comedy is missed. Even in their pictures in the program, the two men playing Dromio could be twins. I saw Fences there, with the most amazing set I've seen in about 55 years of attending theater. Great acting there, too. Then there's Every Christmas Story Ever Written, which has the whole audience rolling in the aisles. This Company is a major jewel in the Queen City's crown. read more

Another great show by the Cincy Shakes! As usual the staff were great and the atmosphere was set for fall, very warm and cozy. There was no intermission since the play was shorter than most but I did snag a drink. The drink menu had spooky themed cocktails, one being a Rhinegiest beer that's called Sour Zombie Juice, I highly recommend if you're into sour/tart beers. The play was fantastic, probably my favorite so far. The cast did a great job and the audience couldn't get enough. The play had comedy, horror l, thrills, drama, and a little bit of romance! 5* standing ovation!!! This was my first night here, and I already want to go back! My wife and I saw Miss Holmes, and I highly recommend folks going to view this play...I was captivated how they pulled off 19parts with only 9 people!!! Just walking into the front waiting area you can feel that something magical is going to happen; the wall art and simple modern decor was very inviting. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the theater and the excitement in everyones face while we waited for the show to start. The theater was smaller, more intimate, and felt like you were apart of the show due to the cast being so close to the audience. This is going to be one of my new date night spots for some fun and a good drink! I didn't purchase a drink at first because I didn't know if I would have time to drink before the show...then I found out that you can have drinks in the theater! Plays I've been to at other locations didn't allow this, so it was nice having a local brewed beer and enjoy an excellent performance. This is a wonderful theater experience. It feels so intimate sitting there, able to see the whites of the eyes of all the actors, watching the subtle change of their facial expressions to add drama. We went to see Miss Holmes and I thoroughly enjoyed the show, they did an excellent job. The show itself was clever and exciting, and the actors are quite good! I'm so impressed how they perform multiple parts switching seamlessly without missing a line. The style of theater puts your attention so much more on the acting instead of the set or the music and everything else that goes into larger productions, I really enjoyed the experience of watching this show. A friend and I got to see Macbeth (one of my favorite plays by Shakespeare) after getting tickets from Yelp Cincy (thank you Tyler!). This is housed in the beautiful Otto Budig building. Parking isn't bad- multiple parking lots around and several metered parking options available. The interiors are classy, with a massive bar in the lobby. The staff are welcoming and friendly. Let me start by saying: when they proposed the design for the Otto Budig Theater in OTR I was a huge hater. To anyone with a sense of classical architectural aesthetic: it kind of sucks. It doesn't match the historic surroundings, it's hypermodern, and it was a bit anger-inducing that they didn't spend the money fixing up another historic venue rather than building something new (like, for instance, the Emery theatre). Well, that was the perspective I went in with. I am so glad that I had this experience (disclaimer: I got free tickets from Yelp, thanks Yelp & Cincyshakes!) Basically I had things all wrong. First off: this theater isn't really your typical concert hall or venue. Every seat is arranged such that you are very, very close to the show. In some cases the front seats are only a foot away from the action - there is not a bad seat in the house! Add to all this that the bar and modern interior are actually very well done and classy: me, the historic architecture purist, actually ended up loving it. Second: the production value is off the charts. I was expecting the show to be good - but from all aspects (acoustics, vantage points, stage construction, lighting effects, sound effects, special effects) they really have turned the show experience into one that I could not imagine in any other venue. The Otto Budig theater really is a special place. Even in the subtle ways that they worked in the tiered stage design and multiple entrances to the show - I was impressed. The show that I got to see was one that I had cliffnot'd many moons ago: Macbeth. Can I just say that, without giving too much away, some of the special effects were so gruesome and terrifying that it felt like a Saw movie? I mean you go in knowing Macbeth is gory, but they pulled off some truly disturbing stunts that I'm sure the audience will remember for the rest of their lives. I'm no theater expert but I felt like it was far above par. I love some good shock value. Case in point: I was a hater and now I love this place and want to see more from Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. You can come here as a plebe/casual watcher with zero theatre knowledge (as I did) or have Broadway-level expectations and you will not be disappointed. read more

We all know Shakespeare can be a bit of a challenge to read, but when these AMAZING actors and actresses perform they are able to make it so much clearer and sooo much more enjoyable. You can certainly see the dedication and love each performer puts into their part. It's one thing to be able to memorize a script, but to memorize Shakespeare??? WOW! They are all so impressive and I appreciate each and every one of them. The sets and props are beautifully made and designed. The costumes are exquisite. I have gotten free tickets through Yelp to see a couple of plays here now. I got to see "Romeo and Juliet" here on this past Friday and I enjoyed getting to see it, thanks to the free tickets from Yelp. The play was well done and I really like the one lady's costume that played the Prince in the play. I would have liked to have gotten a selfie with the lady in the Prince costume, (if that would have been allowed.) The set was beautifully done and the lady that played the Nurse was hysterical. I particularly also was pleasantly surprised to see a lady playing a friar, (new one for me). I think that it was a great thing to see more ladies playing traditionally male parts in this play here, when back in Shakespeare's day, it would have all been played by guys. I hope that I can see more plays here at the Shakespeare Company over the years. read more

We were so lucky to snag tickets to the early screening from the Yelp Cincy Community, it was such a phenomenal ensemble. I have seen all kinds of Broadway productions while I lived in NYC and I'd say this was comparable to the Drunk Shakespeare theater experience. The space is beautiful and very clean. I've always walked past this theater, and had interest but Shakespeare's dialog isn't my favorite thing to decipher. I'm so glad they do productions of this quality because it makes the original material so relatable and easy to understand. My friend enjoyed it very much and was worried about seeing the play because she hadn't read the book; she laughed all the way through it. Every cast member stood out in their own way, but there were three that I was hyper focused on whenever they entered the scene. Geoffrey Warren Barnes as Tranio had me crackling at every sentence while Mollie Murk as Biondello got me snickering with her body language. Josh Innerst as Petruchio was superb at portraying his character's every quirk with his cadence. The addition of characters that challenged the third wall was also kicks and giggles. Concessions staff were friendly and swift with orders. Can't wait to see another production. read more
