We saw 'Tenderly' here over the weekend. The story of Rosemary Clooney's life. So well done. The actor's use of the small stage was impressive and the young lady portraying Rosemary was so spot on and her voice was outstanding. Her male counterpart was amazing as he constantly changed from one character to another, depicting various people in Rosemary's life. The venue is awesome and not a bad seat in the house. Kudos to the stage crew, too, who made the scene changes flawlessly. I love seeing shows here and will surely return again, and again. read more

This venue is so nice, I didn't see a play but I went to an event in the lobby and just within that situation everything looked nice . I would like to rate the event on this review also - for the event I give a 4 stars .. I was told to wear formal attire and bring my ball gown but I felt overdressed in my evening gown that touched the floor. I was told to prepare for a night of tasting and desserts .. the cake bar was cool but honestly I am not sure that I would have it at a adult function it would be more something for a work function or a kids birthday party but maybe it just is not my cup of tea . The steak taco bites were delicious and the salads with ranch . that is some of the best ranch I have ever had .. whoever catered coras cake ball - can I buy a gallon of ranch also please do popups! We had not been here for over 20 years, so well before the restoration and boy, were we wowed! Prepaid parking was a breezed getting in and out. The lobby was beautiful but crowded at intermission as people tried to get drinks. There was not a bad seat in the house and we were blown away by the production of Dial M for Murder. From the costumes, to the set, to the giant "MURDER" sign that was used creatively. And the actors did a spectacular job-we were super impressed! This was my first time back in nearly four years. So much has changed! The remodel is fantastic! Everything has been upgraded and it is much more spacious. The bar area is bigger and looked to have a bigger selection on alcohol. There's some seating outdoors to sit and enjoy a cocktail before the show or take in the views. Parking still isn't that great, if you don't have a garage ticket purchased in advance. read more

Ring of Fire!! This was the second show we saw here since the renovations. It was spectacular!! The small cast played multiple roles, and they were all SO talented. They all played multiple instruments also! We also grabbed refreshments before entering the theater, and the bartenders were personable and efficient. If you can, remember to prepay for parking. Performances are always great. Parking on site for $15 . Park on the garage underneath top parking area. We saw the Johnny Cash tribute. Very good performance as the multi/ talented cast each played several different instruments telling his life story. Many of Cash's hit's were weaved into the story. One small disappointment was not having them do "A boy named Sue". The cast and crew did a beautiful job with his story. Love Johnny or not, it was well worth seeing. read more

Was invited to join a friend for one of the plays here and it was my first time here since the renovation. It is very impressive! The big windows and layout takes better advantage of the views from up there. Also I like that you can drop someone off at the front doors without them having to walk up any steps and the same with the one parking lot on the same level. There are so many upgrades for the cast there and for the patrons as well. Do yourself a favor and go it you haven't already been. read more

Not a bad seat in the house. We saw A Christmas Carol last evening and despite some other reviews, it was really a wonderful show. The acting was top notch by many of the actors. The set and props moved on their own at times, and were very realistic. We had seen the play a few times in the last 15 years and this was the first at the new venue. While it was slightly different, it was definitely for the better. A word of warning though - Jacob Marley's ghost is very loud and it is a dark, powerful scene and you could hear the youngest children being frightened. Also, there is a lot of fog used, and the front two rows were in the fog that rolled off the stage for probably half of the play. All in all, great venue, excellent actors, easy parking (park on the lower garage level and you can get out of there a bit quicker), and a very well produced and directed play. read more

Don't waste your money!! We went to see the play Scrooge tonight, with an open mind. we have seen the reviews, we thought lets just go make the best of it!! I am sure it cant be that bad............ This would be our 8th year. What once was a Christmas Tradition for our family, will now just end as the curtain goes down. We will not waste anymore time or money with this one. We have bought as many as 15 tickets at one time, to take family member to see this once wonderful play. When the play was over in the past your heart was filled with the Christmas spirit. You didnt want it to end. You wanted to cheer for Scrooge & Tiny Tim. Our kids would go over some of the scenes and relive the fun parts & the scary parts for hours. We were sure we were making memories, that would last a life time. Not so for this year.... I don't even know what I thought tonight other than, How much did we pay for those tickets????? I hate to say it but this play was nothing like the plays in the past. the Story line did not even make sense. So much was skipped or left out. it was more like a string of scenes that didnt match up. with no story line! I think if this was the 1st time a child saw this play they would leave feeling like "hum " what was that about??? it was very confusing. long story short I feel so sorry for the actors, I know they are doing their best, but too much of the story line has been left out of the version. The props were low end with no wow factor what so ever, I felt confused through entire play. The biggest role was given to the CLOCK on the wall!! this breaks my heart because this was my favorite play, So Sad the Curtain has some down for my family for the final time. RIP Scrooge read more

I love this place! I've been coming here for a few years now, my whole family comes to see 2-3 plays a year. The venue is great, there are two stages the smaller one is called the Shelterhouse Theater. This is a a great stage for 1 or 2 person show, there is literally no bad seat in the here. Here is where we were this past weekend for "An Evening with Groucho". We loved it! Frank Ferrante does an amazing show, bringing back to life an amazing comedian, it was 90 minutes of abs killing laughter, my in-laws are huge fans of the Marx Brothers, so they were in love with the show. After the show I was able to get an autographed portrait, and Frank was so awesome, laid back, and friendly that he took several pics with us. Now the other stage is the Marx Theater. This is where all the large plays are. The last play we attended was "Shakespeare in Love". This was also a very well done play, the actors were great and even the dog had his moments. I would definitely recommend sitting a in higher seats, not only are they more affordable, but also a better view. If you're looking to see great works of art and not break the bank, like at other places, this is a great place to go. Plus it's a great place for a date, since it's close to a lot of restaurants. I highly recommend people to check it out if they haven't. read more

This is one of my favorite venues in Cincinnati! I grew up going to see A Christmas Carol every Christmas with my family. It made me fall in love with this theater! There is a large lobby and between that contains a bar, some hightop tables, and some seating. There is also a small Deli where you can get hot drinks and sandwiches. There is also a large bathroom located near the bar. My recommendation is to buy a parking pass ahead of time. They are $10 each. If you buy the parking pass, you can park near the theater and walk right in. If you don't pay for parking you have to find parking around Mt. Adams. If you get there early enough, it's not a big deal-- but be prepared to walk. There are some spots below the theater, you would just have to walk up the hill. If it's raining or snowing, that extra $10 is a great deal and worth it. They are actually two theaters in this venue. There is a smaller blackbox theater that serves maybe around 100 people. The large theater easily seeds at least 400 people. I have scene shows and both theaters, and I have enjoyed both. The smaller theater gives you more of an intimate field, as you were right there with the cast members... But the larger venue feels more like a theater. There is not a bad seat in the house! One of my favorite parts of Playoffs in the Park is that they previewed a show a long time ago, and it ended up doing so well it made it to Broadway. It was really neat to be one of the first people to see the show in Cincinnati before they headed to New York. Most of the times they have cast members in from New York but every once in a while, you will see an actor or actress from Cincinnati. Go support your local theater! read more

I came to see "A Christmas Carol" on Saturday night and the theater was quite busy and beautifully decorated. This was my first time at this venue. There is a parking garage for you to park for a fee, else you can park along the street. Upon entering the theater, you are required to present your ID and vaccination card/negative test, as well as required to wear masks the entire time. Although the theater was busy, it was not at capacity. When entering into the main concourse area, there are a couple places to grab drinks and/or snacks. I was able to get some of the red wine and it was quite delicious. When the show was starting and we were getting into our seats, I noticed how lovely the set was. I was in the third row - so pretty close to the stage. The chairs were quite small and uncomfortable to sit in for long periods of time. Overall, I was quite impressed with the show. It was brilliantly told and the actors were dedicated to their parts. I really enjoyed the moving set pieces as well as the opening of the floor. Excellent use of lighting! read more

Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Playhouse in the Park. A week ago was my first time ever going. I had heard about them but did not know where they were located. It's a cute venue and located in Mt. Adams. I was invited for a girls night out. It was about 9 of us. My friends mom ordered the Red Carpet package. It included dinner for so many and the play. When we arrived we were welcomed and they escorted us to the bar. Lol! We each enjoyed a cocktail or wine of our choice. We sat in a waiting room for a few before we were taken into the dinner room. It was simple yet nice. They offered more drinks while we ate. The table was set and of course already had salad and bread on it. The salad was delicious. It had a apple cider dressing that gave a good tang and sweetness. I had the salmon and it was served with mashed potatoes and veggies. The food was decent. Typical play food, not your 5-star restaurant style. Nonetheless, I was appreciative and it hit the spot of dinner. Lol! The desserts were pretty good. There were three small assortments which were a cheesecake, a brownie, and a lemon pie cup. Overall, a good meal to a night out for a play. The play we saw was The West End. It was about Cincinnati in the 40s. It was funny and the actors did a great job acting. I was slightly thrown off by some parts of the story line but overall it made sense. It's 1941 in Cincinnati's historic West End. Every day, the region grows as Black Americans migrate from the Deep South and forge new lives in northern cities. At the same time, German residents face growing hostility as the U.S. teeters on the brink of World War II. Grace, who has fled the South and settled in the West End, houses people of both backgrounds in her row house. When a stranger arrives in the middle of the night in her backyard, Grace must confront the secrets of her past and the irrevocable ripples they have made on her present. This world premiere drama by Cincinnati native Keith Josef Adkins shines a light on a transformative chapter of our city's history. I would certainly come back and watch another play. Now that OTR is the hotbed of entertainment and nightlife, Mt. Adams has become a little quieter and enticing for a less booze-filled, dance club night out. Heading up to the Playhouse has always been risky-parking is abysmal, the roads are winding and shabbily marked, and depending on the night, you may find yourself parking miles away from your intended destination. All of that to say, if you decide to take in a show at the Park, and arrive early enough to snag parking, you are in for a treat. They put on an ample season of theatrical fare that runs the gamut from comedy to tragedy. Most of it is good, some of it is stellar, and every once in a while you get a dud. The building itself is lovely. Beautiful theater spaces, an enchanting lobby, an abundance of women's restrooms! Drinks are typical pricing to other theaters-overpriced, generic, but fit the bill. The staff and volunteers are always cordial and well informed which is appreciated given a sometimes maze-like chaos when attempting to enter and find your seat in the theatre. This review is not meant to tackle the theatre within the building. As I mentioned, the shows vary and therefore so do those reviews. Rather, this review is for the building and front of house staff- that gets 5 stars. Parking gets 3 stars-it's on top of a hill and can be a bit of a pain, but if the show ends up being fabulous, you end up not minding so much. read more

Just caught Little Shop of Horrors here; my first time visiting the playhouse for a show. First off - what a fantastic stage. Little Shop has some "monster" set pieces and the playhouse pulled it off with 5-star quality. It was a Wednesday night show and there was plenty of parking and friendly faces to guide you around the property. The only drawbacks I could see are that the bathrooms can't really handle the intermission rush and though the on-stage talent was top notch, I would love to see them hire a few more locals. read more

We've been wanting to come and check out Playhouse in the Park for years now, and we finally got a chance to this month to see their annual performance of "A Christmas Carol". The theater itself is state of the art. You can tell that they've done a lot to keep things updated and innovative throughout the years. In the box office/lobby area they've created a really nice atmosphere for hanging out before your show begins. There really isn't a bad seat in the house it seems once you're inside. It's a pretty big theater but still has an intimate feeling to it. It makes it easy to get drawn into the show you're seeing..to get lost in it even. I look forward to seeing more shows here in the future for sure. read more

How have I not written a review for Playhouse in the Park?! Playhouse is one of those near and dear places in my heart. Some of my fondest childhood memories are coming here with my family during the holidays to see, "A Christmas Carol." We would all get dressed up in our Sunday bests, go to church together and then see this show. I have seen a number of plays here besides A Christmas Carol and each has had its own unique characteristics, and a reason to love them. Honestly I have not seen a bad performance here. I love the feeling of live theater and I don't think people are exposed to it enough. I was just here to see "The Three Musketeers" and it made me feel like a kid all over again. In fact, I even got my picture taken on their little interactive piece of Art where you stick your head in as the "third musketeer." They usually always do something fun like that in the lobby to tie in to their shows. Speaking of the lobby. It's stunning! The building itself is a work of art. High ceilings with beautiful draped canvases of their current's season's shows on them. They have a full service bar and the champagne splits are only 7 bucks! They also have a new artistic director this year and he changed the rule that you are allowed to bring drinks into the theaters this year to make you feel more comfortable. He is my new favorite person! Let's see how long this rule lasts, don't spill and ruin it for everyone people! Their shows change fairly quickly so you don't get bored, and there really is something for everyone here. All in all this is a wonderful, beautiful, fun, rich and cultural experience that everyone should see at least once in their life! read more

Great place for live theater. We saw Baskerville and it was an incredible production. We came early for a light dinner. I have to say the tenderloin sandwich was simply outstanding. I have attended many events in both The Shelterhouse and the Marx venues and both are excellent for watching the show. I prefer the Marx because there are no bad seats while the Shelterhouse seats against the sidewalls do obstruct some of the stage. Just a minor problem but given the choice, I would prefer the Marx. Of course, it all depends on what event you are attending. In this case, the play and the venue were a match. read more

I have been going to Playhouse for years. Every year we try to make it to see A Christmas Carol. If you have not been, do yourself a favor and revive your holiday spirit. I recently saw HANK WILLIAMS: LOST HIGHWAY in the Shelterhouse Theatre. It is the smaller of the theaters and is very intimate. You feel like you are in the play. There is not one bad seat in the house. The show was very funny and sometimes sad. I didn't realize how troubled Hank's life was. I am not a crier but this one got the tears rolling. I grew up in Cincinnati my entire life and didn't come here until a few months ago. What an awesome place! I love the set-up and the theaters, not to mention both productions I saw were excellent. I used my ETA pass for one (the people at the front desk were incredibly accommodating as I forgot to call ahead!) and was at a yelp elite event for the other. It's a great place to come for a fun relatively inexpensive date nite and makes you feel like you've travelled somewhere and are no longer in Cincinnati (Mt. Adams has a way of doing that to you in general :) Very fun, I would absolutely come back and have no problem paying full price for tickets! read more

This is the best theatre I have ever been to. I go to Playhouse in the Park at least once a year to see their production of A Christmas Carol. Although I see this play every Christmas, I am constantly blown away at how good the production is, and for the consistent attention to detail. I have enjoyed every second at this theatre, and here are some reasons why: 1. The theatre is small, which really allows you to be immersed in the production. There are only 600 seats in the theatre, and not one of them is a bad seat. 2. The staff is very knowledgeable, considerate, and fun. 3. The drinks and snacks they have available are reasonably priced, and they have a great selection. 4. The theatre is very accessible - you will be able to find free street parking not far from the theatre, or you can pre-pay to park in the connecting garage. This was my second time visiting and it was only a slightly better experience than my first. I saw Sooner/Later this past weekend in the Shelter House and I think I prefer the more intimate setting to the larger open space of the Marx. Everyone I interacted with this time was very friendly, the space was clean and easy to navigate and I felt fairly comfortable. I think with theaters, especially ones like this that consistently produce world or regional premieres, it can be pretty hit or miss. This show was enjoyable enough and my experience convinced me to continue to give playhouse a chance even though my first experience was less than exceptional. The only things I wish they would do is provide some kind of shuttle from the bottom of the hill to the doors of the theatre at the top, those stairs are killer!, and maybe have some training for house managers and ushers on better customer service. read more

Playhouse in the park is one of Cincinnati's gems that is a must-see for residents and visitors alike! Their shows are intimate and make you truly appreciate the art of theatre. My mother is part of a group called "leading ladies" who help keep the theatre scene alive! They are a group of women who donate to the theatre and in return they have very cute evenings set-up for them and a guest (at times). They had their "big event" last night in which we got to have a cocktail hour and small dinner before seeing the dress rehearsal of 'Marie and Rosetta'. We went to the Marx theatre to watch A Christmas Carol. What a stellar performance. The theatre is very well kept and the ushers are very polite. The restrooms are huge and well equipped to handle large clouds during intermissions. I think all the seats in the theatre have a pretty good view of the stage as well. Finding parking on the street is bit hard and the parking with the theatre is 10 bucks. If visiting this place in winters and with older folks, I would recommend taking the parking with the theatre. I adore Playhouse. We just saw Christmas Carol and I was pleasantly reminded that there is not a bad seat in the house! Though a costly holiday tradition for a larger family, it is worth it. (Keep in mind when you are buying the seats online that you can shop around for different price points.) I can only hope that the actor that plays Scrooge stays around for awhile longer!
