I was enthralled walking into this space and the gallery displays were phenomenal! One of my favorite artists was actually there talking about her pieces- and it is always wonderful to meet the artist behind exhibited pieces! She made wonderful sculptures of busts and heads with what I would call brain chaos sprouting out of the tops of the heads. For me- I love art that sparks an emotional response, is something relatable, or something that just sparks my curiosity and imagination. There were plenty of other artists work there too and I loved several different pieces. On this particular evening I was sprinting through town hitting up several galleries- but this was my first stop and made a huge impression on me. The space itself is also wonderful. We were only allowed access to the downstairs gallery, I assume classrooms were upstairs or downstairs (or both) and I could see there were other exhibits, but those were closed. Cincinnati really embraced the NCECA pottery crowd and made sure to have as many exhibits across town as possible!

The Art Academy has come a really long way in the past few years. They used to be located in Mt…read more Adams but recently purchased a larger building in Over-the-Rhine and have moved everything downtown. It's a beautiful building on Jackson Street that was re-done to fit the style of the Art Academy. Inside there is a sprawling atrium that looks up all the floors around the staircases. There is gallery space all over the building and chances are there is some show up. Right now the SOS Political art show is hung up as well as the Visual Fringe Gallery for the Fringe Festival. The Art Academy generously donates a classroom to the Fringe Festival as well for it's use for a few plays and it's a great space for them! The Art Academy unfortunately had a rapid decrease in enrollment since their move downtown, which was to be expected. However, with the revitalization of the gateway quarter (as it's now being called) things should be looking up for them. If you are looking for a great art school for all aspects of visual art and design, this is the place to go!

One of my absolute favorite things to do is a James Reynold's "Not Your Average Paint and Sip"…read moreclass. I've now done five classes and I'm so excited about his new space in Walnut Hills, which will provide options for all sorts of events. His creativity and imagination is endless and his students benefit as a result. Like the name says, this is not your average paint-n-sip. The drinks are flowing and it's a full bar with beer, wine, and liquor, as well as n/a options. You get guidance from a theme and inspiration photos and images, but you ultimately decide what you're going to paint. Some people choose to recreate an existing piece but many go wild, like I do. The Pendleton Art Center space was brilliant and eclectic and full of color and inspiration. I have high hopes that the Walnut Hills space will be the same and I'll be one of the first ones there. James is a delight. He's supportive and encouraging but absolutely no-nonsense. He will give guidance when requested, or gentle nudges when things go awry (or you're taking too long lol). He's an excellent teacher, an outstanding entertainer, and you feel like you're best friends by the end of the class. Do yourself a favor. Whether it's a date, girls' night out, or you can fill the whole space, book a class with @NYAPSC_OTR.

I have done several of those "paint party" type classes at other venues so this was a great change of pace and I actually preferred this type of class- no stress, no artistic ability needed, and I liked the end result better than any of my other paintings. The instructor, Patricia, was very nice and accommodating, we were offered wine or water upon arrival and then went to the downstairs of the gallery for the class. We arrived early so had the pleasure of walking through the gallery beforehand. It's a beautifully renovated space and had a lot of nice pieces displayed. I came to visit my son in Cincinnati and decided to do a mini yarn crawl. I was blown away by this…read moreshop! I meet 2 of the three co-owners, Francine and Lucinda. They made me feel so welcome and comfortable. I felt like we were old friends! They spent time showing me around, explaining their different events throughout the year and invited me back for open Knitting Thursday night. The store had some of the best displays, samples and pattern ideas I have ever seen in a shop. They had many sweaters knit up and labeled which were put in a 20 Sweater Idea workbook. The book contained pictures and all the information for those same sweaters. To help you make one of those sweaters, you can sign up for the workshop for a fee of $50. You can get all the help you need to finish. They have different times during the week scheduled that you can come in and get all the help you need to get the project done for that particular sweater you're making. That continues until you have finished the sweater. Their philosophy is they want to help everyone finish without having to worry about making it to all of the classes for a project, such a good idea - strictly scheduled classes are sometimes hard because you might not be able to make it to all the classes and then you're stuck. They were getting ready for Christmas and they had the best idea! They have at least 27 small Christmas items to either knit or crochet, made as samples for the store with a little picture and number next to each one. Then they have a book with each project listed by number with the pattern and a list of supplies that are needed. What a very creative idea! I wish I lived closer. I would be there every week. The vibe is so, energetic and enthusiastic.Laughter abounds and you can tell the staff all get along so well and enjoy what they're doing!!
