The main auditorium has so much character and wonderful, sumptuous design details! The secondary screening room is larger than I expected, has comfortable seating and decent sound. The Michigan hosts a mix of first run, repertory, independent, and experimental programming, including service as the main theater for the annual Ann Arbor Film Festival.

Whether it's a new release or seeing classics like Star Wars, LOTR, or The Big Lebowski on the big screen, the experience is incredible. The theater itself is breathtaking too. Around 1600 seats, the balcony, the chandelier, and the nearly 100-year-old organ that rises up before the movie starts while someone plays it live. It honestly feels magical in a way that no modern theater does anymore. Even just seeing the marquee glowing outside at night feels iconic. The whole place has this timeless energy to it that makes going to the movies feel important again. Whenever someone asks me my favorite place in Ann Arbor, this is my answer.

My husband and I couldn't remember the last time we had been to this Cinemark (all signs point to…read morepre pandemic?) and I was honestly a little apprehensive about how it would be since a lot of theatres have been falling by the wayside but to my pleasant surprise it's actually still in pretty good shape! Typically we go to another theatre that's a bit closer with some better amenities (a fairly robust food, menu, a full bar, etc) but we came here because it was the only theatre in the area showing a movie we wanted to see. Gone are the days of the giant movie releases where multiple concession counters are open, so parts of the building do feel like of deserted, but it was still pretty busy for a Monday night and there was a bit of a line, though it did move pretty quickly. A lot of it is grab and go (including most hot food), so it's convenient and quick, though the quality does suffer a bit not being made to order (compared to their local chain competitor who delivers your food to your seat). I got the chicken fingers and we split some fries and they were ok. Not great but not terrible. It got the job done. We also split some popcorn which was freshly popped. I'd probably just stick to that and a soda next time. The theatres are clean and the seats themselves are recliners and pretty comfy and in good condition. Projection was good, as was the sound. Commercials/trailers were almost a half hour long which felt a bit like overkill, tho. Over all, it was fine. Not impressive enough to get us to change our regular theatre but serviceable for a visit now and again.

Ann Arbor Civic Theatre (AACT) spreads out their 6-play season so that, as season ticket subscribers, we find that a play pops up about every 8 weeks. Because Ann Arbor is a rather large college town, there always seems to be abundant local talent to fill out the casts of the local productions even though AACT is not affiliated with the U of M. AACT does however, utilize two University theatre venues to put on their productions. Today's production is "Oliver!" and panning the audience of the Mendelssohn Theatre, I'm definitely seeing more kids in the audience for this Sunday matinee that normal. Bottom line is Ann Arbor Civic Theatre is one of the many great cultural offerings of this community...a theatrical 4 stars!

Ann Arbor is truly lucky to have the Ann Arbor Film Festival and anyone who has the chance will be lucky to take advantage of it!

Tickled Fancy's troupe is made up of lovely, expressive ladies not afraid to strip their clothes off to music in the truest burlesque style, mixing charm and a touch of coy smarm. Laughter is welcome with these delightful dolls. Their routines split between groups and solo performances, covering a gamut of different styles; mermaids and sailors opened our act, with all the posturing, fin-fanning, and peering over giant aviator sunglasses at heaving bosoms an audience could want. A hula-hoop wearing clown stripped down to her striped-sock skivvies, and that girl was adorable. I've never wanted sparkly red glitter-lipstick so badly after seeing the hostess of events shining in the limelight; that's a good thing, right? The piece de resistance was the superhero choreography where villains and heroes of DC Comics squared off on the stage. Robin, Batman, Catwoman (I think) and Poison Ivy duel in a feat of swaying hips, thrown punches, and dangling ornaments from pasties (yes, the bat symbol.). Poison Ivy stole the show on that one for me, though everyone was fantastic; I guess I've got a thing for deadly redheads with voluptuous curves and a killer "POW!"
