I always saw the Custom Creations storefront driving down El Camino but then my best friend used them for her new construction home a few months ago (she was referred to Custom Creations by her builder). Her wood blinds and shutters look fantastic so of course I emailed Nick too. He was patient, had great advice, and was SO meticulous about every detail that we knew we could trust him. He helped us pick colors, took measurements, and a few weeks later the custom shades arrived! John came to install our blinds and we were also jazzed by his meticulousness. You can tell he's been doing this for decades and his perfectionism was obvious (despite working SUPER fast). Every shade is perfectly even and they roll up/down soooo smoothly! He explained that the original cellular shades could not be retro-fitted to be motorized, so we would have to buy new sets. No problem - and totally understandable! Rommel was very patient and thorough with his explanation of why and working with us to understand our project. We ended up purchasing four sets of shades for our primary bedroom to cover two large windows with a two-layer, motorized system of black-out and light-filtering cellular shades. Rommel's installation team (Rene and Martin) were amazing - super fast, diligent, and competent! They also moved the original set of cellular shades we had to our living room, which meant we didn't lose them after all! They also updated the cord pulls for the original set, which we appreciated. The motorized shades have been such a wonderful addition to our master bedroom! We love the total darkness it provides for sleeping in -- and the automatic scheduler to lower / raise the shades as well has proven very convenient. We are VERY pleased with this upgrade. It has a 50's-60's atmosphere sans multinational chain coffee shops, chain restaurants, chain bookstores, etc, etc. Even the post office is 50's. Consumer Shades is located next to Noodle Shop. The place is small, but they have lots of samples inside the showroom. The lady who runs the place is efficient and knows her products. Tons of sample books but frankly, too much info for me. Since I already had blinds from CD from years ago, the lady gave me her sample book so I could match the color and style of what I already have. Ordered the stuff and I installed it on a weekend. I am not sure if they r cheaper of Costco, but Costco won't have the person to person service that Consumer Shades offers.

When we stepped into midnight at the start of 2026, I heard neighbors setting off fireworks, and I never imagined that opening the window to watch fireworks could be such a simple, one-second joy. Having plantation shutters at home is truly wonderful. If I could give ShutterMark of San Mateo 100 stars , I absolutely would. Before deciding on window treatments, I did extensive research. I learned that plantation shutters are easy to clean, help reduce noise, keep the house warmer in winter and cooler in summer, and even increase property value . That said, shutters are definitely a premium investment, so choosing the right company really matters. I was incredibly lucky to find Eli on Yelp. He was the very first person who came to my home to measure and provide a quote. Normally, I always compare multiple vendors--but this time, I decided to go with him immediately. WhyBecause Eli is not only the owner, but also the salesperson and the person who personally came to install the shutters once the materials arrived. That level of accountability is rare. By contrast, my experience last year with Lowe's was absolutely terrible. It really proved that "big companies are always better" is a myth. They often make the process far more complicated, their so-called lifetime warranties are mostly marketing gimmicks, and the prices are usually higher as well. Originally, I planned to install shutters on only three street-facing windows. But after seeing the quality and the pricing, I changed my mind and decided to do my entire home. The value was simply too good to pass up. Now, I think of Eli and his team twice every day-- once in the morning when I open the shutters, and once at night when I close them. She was also very patient with all our questions and gave us lots of options as we were figuring out a price range that could work for us. I am still in awe of how she even measured some of the unique windows we had. We have a large half moon window and also a window that's on a high vaulted ceiling that required a motorized system. And when one of the second set of repaired shaded came back, the cheap plastic handle was broken off. The workmanship is not there and the repairs are costly and time consuming. Find a different model.
