Used to eat at this restaurant on a regular basis it was always delicious and always enjoyed it but. Yelp says it's open. I call them and they get a message drive all the way out there and it's locked up tight.. it doesn't matter what day of the week or what hour it is there's no one there. Moral of the story is don't believe everything yelp says I seriously doubt they've ever even been there. There are no hours listed on the door. So, the new owners reopened Circa 1880 about 9 months ago. This is our first trip in since then. A slightly smaller menu, but some new additions that got my attention. After ordering, one of the new owners dropped by our table. Mark was quick to tell us that his better half, Leslie, was busy in the kitchen preparing our feast! And a feast it was. Glenda's Monterrey Chicken Sandwich was outstanding. She loved it. The house made potato chips that came with it were seasoned and extra crispy. I chowed them down! My feast was the Friday night special, a brisket chimichanga. Brisket in a deep fried flour tortilla, covered in a smokey sour cream sauce, and drizzled with a jalapeño BBQ sauce. OMG! This was fantastic! Everybody likes brisket, but throw in a flour tortilla, sour cream sauce, and jalapeno bbq sauce, and your taste buds will be in flavor heaven! Yes, it was that good. In my opinion, of course. The true test will be when YOU come next Friday and try it yourself! We were stuffed, which meant no homemade ice cream, five different flavors if I remember correctly! And, to top it all off, Nancy Robinson Masters, a nationally known author, was there, autographing her books. Glenda and I bought 3 for Glenda's great niece, Baylee. A great meal, a great evening. Had a great meal here on our way home. The chocolate pie is to die for, kids loved the homemade ice cream flavors (Reese's and Milky Way). The jalapeño burger had a homemade bun that was delicious, the smoky chicken enchilada was the special of the day and was delicious, loved that it was a twist on a classic! We were extremely disappointed to find out that this restaurant had new owners and a new menu but decided to give it a try anyway. Before the changeover, this adorable little restaurant was fantastic. Unfortunately, the chicken fried was underwhelming, the mashed potatoes were lumpy, and the onion rings were greasy. The brisket sandwich was fine and the hamburger was ok. No one asked if we liked our meal and this was a little disheartening. We won't be returning. read more

We stopped in at Circa 1880 on a recent quick trip to Abilene. We came back twice that weekend to eat there again. We are from the DFW area and I LOVE small, home-cooking places. If we can find them here in DFW, they are either blah and/or charge a million dollars. Circa on the other hand gave us heaping helpings of delicious, scratch-made food at affordable prices. Even though Circa has everything I look for in a home cooking eatery, the food was not the best part. The people, from the owners who stopped by our table to the waitress/waiter, were over-the-top concerned that we were taken care of and enjoying an exceptional experience. That is a level of service that is so rare to find and I absolutely would make the two hour drive to enjoy that kind of dinner again. It's a place to go where you feel like they actually care about the customer. In this economy where I have to be stingy with dollars, Circa 1880 is a place I'm happy to give my business to! Good Ambiance, old stone downtown store. Roomy, definitely set up for the locals. Visitors quickly find their way around. Nice road stop. CFS is large but undercooked and tough , same for fried squash. Tease for desserts extra large cake slice in case but not size served. I'm trying again, burgers look amazing. read more

My husband and I went on a Thursday, and apparently we came on the right day, because it was all you can eat catfish. Husband got that, and I got the jalapeño burger. Just driving through the area and stopped here for some dinner. I got the Cream Cheese Jalapeño Melt and my boyfriend got the Country-Fried Steak. Both meals were relatively inexpensive and came in GIANT portions. Absolutely fantastic home cooked food!! The building and town look like they came straight from an old-timey country movie. We are buying a place in Granbury TX and we were driving home to Albuquerque and decided to stop at this restaurant for lunch. My husband had chicken fried steak and it looked delicious!! The sides were fried okra and french fries and he couldn't begin to finish everything. I had the patty melt on a homemade jalapeño bun which was so good and salad bar. I haven't had a salad bar since before the pandemic and was really looking forward to it and it was very good too! We had a very sweet waitress she really helped us decide on our entrées which were both fabulous!! When we drive again to Granbury we will definitely stop at this place . So when you're driving don't stop in Abilene keep going a little further and come to this precious gem in Baird Texas! read more

We thought we'd try something new and drove out to Baird. It was easy to find in a little downtown strip. The building is nice and comfortable. Southern home feel. Holly was excellent and took great care of us. The food is delicious and overflowing. Come hungry and leave your diet at home!! The Fries and onion rings are great, unless your afraid of grease lol. The chicken fried chicken was excellent, nice juicy meat covered in tasty gravy. The beer battered fish and shrimp was tender beyond the crust. It was very enjoyable. I do not run a restaurant, but I know a lot about how things should be made. This is what you put on your club sandwich. Three pieces of huge Texas toast, big pieces of ham and turkey with the rind still on, very little lettuce and tomato and not much dressing. You also used the thick, tasteless bacon that is hard to bite and chew. The thin bacon has more than double the flavor of the thick. This is how it should be made: Three pieces of white toast of square shape and on the thin side. Mayo on one side of two of them and on both sides of the toast that will be in the middle. Shaved thin ham and turkey, not too much and not too little. Crisp and not greasy thin bacon, 2 or 3 slices. Crisp shredded iceberg lettuce, sliced tomato and onion and good American cheese. Stack all neatly on the bread and slice on the diagonal and then slice again in the other direction so you have four triangles. Put a frilled toothpick through the center of each triangle and stand the pieces on end with the points facing up in a circular pattern. Usually potato salad is put in the middle of the circle. You make good potato salad, so there is no need for the potato soup. Please do yourself and your customers a great favor and make this wonderful, tried and true sandwich the correct way. read more

AMAZING!! While traveling, I love locally owned and operated restaurants that are soo yummy and unforgettable. Circa 1800 Restaurant- Best chicken fried steak sandwich and potato soup (that was included with the sandwich) I've ever had. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the shrimp basket with fries! I know everything on their menu was superb. I wish I had room for dessert. The meal was very reasonable, The service was more then fantastic. It looked family owned but not sure. First time visitors for my husband's birthday last Friday night on our way home from Abilene decided to give this small town gem a try. The place was packed, awesome to see in a small town joint! Because of the high volume of customers and take out orders, our food did take quite a while. However it was WORTH THE WAIT!! Husband had the special ribeye/shrimp, I had a club sandwich and onion rings. The best club sandwich I've ever had and I consider myself a club sandwich expert..haha.
