Been going here since I was in high school and now that I am grown and moved away I still go everytime I am in Scituate to visit my family. Everything on the menu is delicious and made fresh and the chocolate chip cookies are the best I've ever had. I've seen so many reviews about bad customer service and have to say that I haven't had that experience. People are always friendly and the owner is had always been nice to me. I think because some of the sandwiches take a while to make and are 100% worth it since they are really well made people complain about the wait but it is something to be expected and the baked goods are so great sometimes they run out and have a daily limit to keep things fair. Went here for some sandwiches based on reviews after performing at the South Shore Music Circus. It was located in a nice part of town... typical of an affluent upper - middle class Boston suburb. The location was cramped and the service was slow, but we stuck it out. After we ordered and while We were waiting is when i first noticed i had crossed into the Twilight Zone. What I hadn't noticed when We first came in was the little message on the chalkboard saying "all lives matter". I should have gathered the troops and left right then and there, but the kids with us had already opened their chips and We were pretty much committed. It still amazes me how privileged white Americans don't get it. We received our sandwiches, found a place to sit and stuck it out. While we were eating I was amazed at the sheer number of blonde, blue eyed teenagers who began pouring through the doors after climbing out of their new Jeep Weanglers wearing variations of "Cohasset Lacross" t shirts. As they came in to order I noticed many of them practically glaring at us with open distaste as we ate our sandwiches. It is important to note here...i am not black. I don't even belong to an ethnic minority. I am of European descent with French, German, and Irish roots... but the southern French dominates and I have very dark, olive skin, as do my children, and are often mistaken for Hispanic. when we lived in South Florida, plenty of folks actually thought we WERE Hispanic. My son also had a friend with him who IS Hispanic. But, because we didn't look like we just got off the boat from Norway, I think it was assumed we all were in their town illegally. It was very, very strange. Once I was aware of it, the xenophobia permeating the establishment was palpable. Folks there seemed almost offend that I, and my children were eating sandwiches in this small, well reviewed shop... like we didn't belong there. I have visited Circe's over the years and always enjoyed their sandwiches. Recently when my mother visited she picked up a couple chocolate chip cookies to enjoy after she and my dad finished up their sandwiches. She felt as though these cookies were absolutely amazing and worth the trek to North Scituate. She tried placing an order one week before Christmas for a dozen cookies (you can only get 8 at a time) to be picked up on Christmas Eve. The woman who answered told her that she couldn't take any more orders for the holidays. Fine - not a big deal. We didn't need them for Christmas. Shortly after, I called to see about picking them up the day after Christmas since they are closed on Sundays and the woman gave me the same story about not being able to take any more orders. I politely asked if I could call ahead on my way there to put some cookies aside. I really just wanted to make my mom happy because for some reason she thought these cookies were the most amazing thing on the planet. The woman on the phone said yes. On our way down there, I called and got the same response of no. We decided to go down anyway. There must have been some sort of chance there would be cookies. Upon entering Circes - they weren't that busy, I asked for 12 cookies and the woman said I needed to have placed an order. If only she knew how many times we TRIED TO PLACE ONE! I then asked for 5 or 6 cookies and received attitude from the woman behind the counter. She informed me that "they are not a bakery" and "cookies will be out in 30 minutes." I liked it. A lot. As others have said, terrific sandwiches, great, fresh ingredients - and quite possibly the best chocolate chip cookie I've ever had. I had the turkey, swiss, avocado and honey mustard on Tuscan bread. I asked for them to add tomatoes. They forgot. It was still delicious but I bet it would have been even better with those tomatoes. I realize it's not the most exciting sandwich they offer but it's what i wanted and it was delicious. House roasted turkey, fresh avocado, amazing chewy, crusty bread. My husband had the tomato, mozzarella, pesto sandwich and added chicken. His was pressed like a panini and it looked delicious. He really enjoyed it. We also got 2 bags of fancy-brand kettle chips (I forget the brand), 2 izzy's sparkling soda's, and we split 1 chocolate chip cookie (it's about the size of 4 regular sized toll-house cookies). I was a little surprised that the total was $28. Not so surprised that I wouldn't go back but it seemed a bit steep. Maybe that cookie cost $4 or $5 dollars? If so, it was worth every penny! THIS is why I got a cookie. I overheard this conversation: Guy in front of me: "Oh, and my cookie. How could I forget my chocolate chip cookie. I have to have one whenever I'm here!" The combination of tremendously fresh and tasty ingredients on Pain D'Avignon breads make this so much more than your average sandwich shop. If I'm anywhere on the South Shore I try and find a way here to Scituate to get their Chicken Pesto Panini. The pesto is probably the best I've ever had-- absolutely fresh and with whole pine nuts mixed into the final spread... oooh, yep, there's that drool I mentioned. In addition to the sandwiches there's a handful of amazing baked goods (chocolate chip cookie is a personal fave), gourmet sodas and waters, as well as some prepared soups and to go foods. The interior is cozy but tight- one communal table and some window seating. In nicer weather you can use one of the few two tops outside. In busy times, it's easiest to just grab your order to go and enjoy elsewhere. But let's be honest, you won't be able to make it far without digging in. read more

THE WORST. THE OWNER IS HORRIBLE. STAY AWAY. DIRTY. RUDE STAFF. $$$$$ and CASH ONLY AND ABOVE ALL COLD GREASY MEDIOCRE FOOD. Arriving there was a line of about 8 people, knowing how slow the service is, I asked each person if they minded if I inquired about the to go order. When I got to the counter, I could clearly see my order sitting there- when I asked the owner told me that I had to get to the back of the line and wait my turn. So I went to the back of the line. Circe's waits on one person at at time, and makes one sandwich at a time, so each order takes about 10-15 minutes to complete. While waiting I noted that something foul smelling had burned filling the whole place with an awful smell, and overall the store portion looked run down and dirty. Making me wonder about the kitchen. After 45 minutes of waiting it was my turn. They grabbed the same bag of sandwiches that had been sitting there when I was told to get to the end of the line. I told them that I feared the sandwiches were cold now and requested that they be reheated. It was at that point the owner started going crazy - grabbing the sandwiches out of the bag and telling me that they were warm enough. I told her I wanted the same as everyone else - fresh hot sandwiches as she made me go to the back of the line instead of taking my $60 cash for the pre ordered sandwiches when I first approached the counter. She flipped out and told me to take the sandwiches and leave her store. I put the $60 in the tip jar and left with my greasy cold uninspired sandwiches that I waited for over 2 hours to get. I highly recommend the chocolate chip cookies, brownies, or oatmeal raisin cookies. You can only purchase eight at a time. What a shame. Stock up when you can.
