I've been coming here since I was a kid and it's still my favorite ham and cheese sub on the planet. Is their mayonnaise better than Hellman's, or does it just taste better because someone else made it? I swear it's better! Excellent bread too! Ordered a large meatball and provolone for lunch to split. I don't know why we expected the sub to be toasted but it wasn't, nor was it offered. The meatballs were small and diced into even smaller pieces. To top the off mediocrity they were lukewarm at best. Nothing about that sub would make me return for another. read more

I have been coming here for about 3 years now. Their food is pretty good, and the service could be better but it's not the worst. There has been a lot of flies whenever I went. But today, it was absolutely disgusting. There were ants and flies all over the counters, including the food that I was going to eat. There was food on all of the tables and chairs as well. Placed an online order at 7:00om on Saturday when their website said they close at 8. Arrived at 7:40 to pick up the food to find they were closed with someone sweeping the floors who refused to look at me as I tried to get his attention, then turned off the lights and left 15 minutes before they supposedly closed. Upon being begged to try it again by Bob S. I did so yesterday. I stopped in for a slice and a steach and cheese. It was a tad better than my recollection. The bread and pizza tasted fresher than my memories held. It's hard to respect a place selling pizza that doesn't make it's own dough. Still pretty mediocre. I've given this place so many chances due to its convenient location but no more. The food is okay on a good day and barely edible on a bad day. There is ALWAYS a wait for your order even when it isn't lunch/dinner time. I call my order in on my way to the beach and it's never even started by the time I get there. There is always a palpable tension in the kitchen between the owners and the staff because of the complete confusion and lack of organization. I am all for giving high school kids summer jobs but please, someone who knows how to run a business needs to be put in charge to oversee the operation. Many times I've overlooked the wait and sub par food just because I've gotten an apology from the owner but all too often he/she are in the weeds and customer service goes out the window. I might be biased, as a friend of mine works here, but I really enjoy Benchwarmers. My turkey sandwich was delicious and was just the right size. Service was great, the owner is awesome, she made good conversation with us and was pleasant. Only thing: don't eat inside the restaurant. I grew up in Duxbury. Benchwarmer Subs has a very special place in my heart. They used to be located under my dad's office so I went there a lot as a kid. They used the very best bread for their sandwiches. To this day, they make the most incredible BLT I have EVER had. Great place and the people who run it are wonderful. read more

Having frequented Benchwarmers Sub Shop over the years, today will have been our last. We picked up cheeseburger subs on the way to the beach only to find that the subs were cold and initially we thought they had forgotten the burgers....we had to search through the bread before we found a little meat....not sure if there was any cheese. So basically, for $9.03 you got a sub roll with a smattering of lettuce and tomato. The sub roll has also changed from the last time and was not a typical sub roll. The subs are out of this world(I am a big fan of the chicken parm and steak and cheese) and the pizza is the best around. I found this place very bland. The chicken salad was literally just chicken with mayo on it. It would have been so much better with some onion and celery chopped up into it. My husband described his steak and cheese as "meh", but 2 stars because my mom's salad actually had fresh veggies, which is somewhat hard to find at a lot of the local sandwich shops. Very reliable good food! I've been going to this shop for many years! Pizzas is N End NY style. Always great crust pepperoni is plentiful! Always piping hot! Subs are stuffed with ingredients, although from time to time a little too much lettuce. Yes I've had sandwich that could have been a little better once in a while but not often! They hire local high school kids and some times it takes them a while to learn! But for my money it's Benchwarmers! Try a Roast beef or pastrami or one of their specialty sandwiches! It sounds crazy to have a store dedicated to making just subs, but hey, these guys did it and they did it so well. Subs are supreme. They have everything that you could possibly want (great selection of subs) so if you feel like traveling, hop in your car, drive 5 hours away (unless you take the Mass Pike, then you could make the trip in under 3 1/2 hours). It's a great ride this time of year, go to Duxbury.
