This is a painful review for me to write because I am a Cirque du Soleil fanatic. I have seen 13 different shows, some of them multiple times. I normally can't get enough of them but we were all disappointed with this show. With the exception of Ka, all of the shows I've seen have a general theme but don't have a rigid story they are following. It's just one amazing act after another. Before the show started they were playing audio that constantly encouraged you to download the smartphone app so that you could interact with the show. As I write this it currently has 46 reviews with an average rating of 1.5 stars on iTunes. I think 1.5 stars might be a little generous. It's such a cool idea but the execution is terrible. Supposedly I could interact with the fireflies that were buzzing around the stage before the show, but I didn't notice any difference when I did it on my phone. Even worse, the app makes your phone notify you during the show to use it. How completely distracting. I hated the app. This is usually what my thought process is during a Cirque du Soleil show: "That was incredible!" "How are they doing that???" "WHAT!" This was my thought process during Toruk: "I can't understand what the storyteller is saying." "That was nice I guess. I wonder when they're going to do some acrobatics?" "The lights on that tree look pretty." I think that my biggest frustration was that I kept waiting for the Cirque du Soleil acrobatics that always blow my mind and they never showed up. Because the show had to follow a set storyline there wasn't really a way to incorporate them apparently. During one part of the show a giant net got raised towards the ceiling and I got excited thinking it was finally time for some high-flying. Unfortunately the net was just part of the storyline. It took the place of a mountain that the characters were climbing. Sigh. Another part of the show had multiple people swinging kites in circles from the end of long poles that went on for far too long. I'm not paying this much money for tickets to see something I can do myself! I'm giving the show three stars because there were some interesting set pieces that looked good. They had giant cloth flowers that would "grow" out of ground and some water effects simulating a river that looked impressive. I also enjoyed the tree of fife and the giant flying puppet. Did I enjoy them enough to justify spending this much on tickets? Hell no. read more

One of the worst Cirque du Soleil shows I've been to. And I've been to about ten. This one wasn't that much of a cirque show. It was so disappointing! It was more of a theater show where they told a story. (Not a very good story). So, unfortunately there weren't that many acrobatic performances, The only thing Toruk had going for it was the cool light show. Even the music for this performance was not that good. There were a few people in my section who just walked out during the second act. I would not recommend this show. There was none of that Cirque du Soleil magic in this. Save your time and money! I'm an avid Avatar and Cirque du Soleil fan so as you can imagine, I was super excited when this series was developed. I actually flew from Albuquerque, NM to Phoenix for the day to watch the show at the Talking Stick Arena. Here's my take: While many have said this is by far the WORST show they've seen, I would respectfully have to disagree. I think the Michael Jackson CDS was far worse; however, I would agree by saying this show is second worst. Why? The stage design and effects are what made this show slightly interesting. The story plot was difficult to follow (especially if you've never seen the movie Avatar); and there was a lack of special stunts or any acrobatics for that matter (boomerang tossing doesn't count, sorry!) . The music was pre-recorded... the singer was lip singing. It's definitely more like a play and not a CDS performance. I'm not sure if their budget is dwindling and hence creating less interesting shows but I will keep my eye open for more spectacular shows in the future. read more

We really enjoy Cirque performances; however, "Toruk" was the worst Cirque experience, in my opinion. Toruk included beautiful set design that Cirque is know for. However, it contained none of the amazing human talents. Not the acrobatics or other performance art. Instead they used story-telling to compensate for lack of performance. That would be fine, if this was explained going in (and in that case, we would have avoided the show). But this really isn't the type of show we've come to expect from Cirque. In addition, the story telling was difficult to follow. Partially because there were many concurrent moving pieces, exacerbated by heavy use of the "Toruk" language, leaving the audience (who I assume was filled with people from the planet Earth) having to interpret the dialog through the drama. I get it. If I were a real thespian, I'd be fine without the dialog. Okay, sure. Unfortunately, I'm just an average person that wants to see an exciting, visually-stimulating, moving performance for the $100+ per ticket, once all fees are added. I decided to come here with my family after going a few months back with my girlfriend. My first time here was absolutely magical! I walked in and it was like I had just walked into the winter wonderland of Narnia! The exotic atmosphere, the unique costumes, the exquisite music, all had me turned upside down! The performance was like tasting water for the first time! The talents were amazing! Needless to say, I had to come back again and I hyped it up like crazy for my family. It was kind of disappointing because it wasn't anywhere near as exciting or jaw-dropping as the last one, but then again I cant expect them all to be amazing. Plus, this one was Avatar themed while the other was a Cabinet of Mysteries. Aside from that, the show was still pretty impressive. The actors showing off their acrobatic skills, the amazing usage of lights to create the world around us, and the wonderful set decorations all combined to create a very unique experience. A lot of work was put into the set design and choreography and it was mostly emphasizing the story so I am sure that is why they didn't focus on the tricks aspect of it. Overall I had a great time and look forward to more Cirque Du Soleil! First word in "Cirque du Soleil" is "Cirque" and we expecto to see some circus. The amount of "Cirque" in this show is close to nothing. It is a very colorful scenario though. Full of choreographies and disguises. It's a good idea to watch the movie before going to this show in order to better appreciate the story and meaning of some gestures. Being a semi hard core Avatar fan, I looked forward to this performance with great anticipation. Although the spectacle was bright and colorful, mystical and at times overwhelming, it somehow did not live up to my expectations based on previous Cirque productions. Although the Avatar-based story line was plausible, the actual circus style performances seemed sparse...nothing one could really characterize as "death-defying." I was also disappointed at the added novelty of downloading their "Toruk" app to be able to be part of the performance. First, it would have been great to know about this before the show so I could have my phone fully charged ahead of time so I wouldn't have to shut down before intermission. Second, since there was no wifi available to the public, I had to rely on my network, which far more often than not could not be found by my phone. Having seen five previous Cirque shows, I already knew of the high production standards that normally came with these performances. My wife has seen more than I, so I was excited to buy her tickets for Toruk when it came to our area. Sadly, it was one of the biggest disappointments I've ever paid $200 to experience. First and foremost, Toruk should never have been labeled as a Cirque du Soleil production. It lacks most of the core elements for which Cirque has come to be known. Traditionally, Cirque shows highlight dazzling acrobatics and pushing the envelope of human ability. This, paired with fantastic costuming, elaborate staging, and wonderful musical score, all combine into what we normally expect from CDS. Toruk had the costuming and staging (hence the two stars), and nothing else. Story has never really been at the forefront of a Cirque show. Let's be real, it's a glorified circus, and nobody goes to the circus for any sort of enthralling tale. We want to be wowed and left breathless. Toruk didn't have a single one of these moments, not to mention the story was straightforward and predictable. I was flat-out bored from start to finish. I'm not sure if it was because of the venue, but the sound engineering was awful. Music faded in and out, the narrator was barely audible, and the pre-show announcements about downloading the app (Don't do it!) dominated the arena. Again, not sure if they didn't know how the system worked at the Forum, but they were way off that night. The worst part about this entire debacle was that I bought these tickets for my wife's Christmas present. Walking out of the show, I felt so very guilty that I had given her such a horrible gift. If you've read some of the other reviews, the general gist of this one won't be much different. With all due respect to the performers, who are great and who do wonderful things I could never do, the show was just poorly conceived. Toruk is not a normal Cirque show that features numerous death-defying acrobatics and stunts. There are some impressive physical displays of strength and flexibility here, but they're few and far between, and they seem muted, as if the choreographers really held back for some reason. I kept waiting to be wowed, but never was. The "story" that drove the production was boring and flat, laying out a mythology that--even as someone who liked the movie--I didn't care for and could never get into. What usually works for Cirque is that the mythology of any given show is just a sidebar, allowing the performers and stunts to be in the foreground. The exact opposite happened with this show--with way too much narration and nothing happening, and not enough acrobatics and displays of talent. The set design is pretty to look at, but at times it also misses the mark. There's one scene featuring a bunch of performers on a wall, and the wall is way in the back and obscured by various set pieces in front of it, so all the performances that should have been appreciated were partially blocked and/or hard to see. My wife has been to numerous Cirque shows, and is one of the most optimistic, glass-half-full people I know, and she was utterly disappointed on the drive home, partly because we treated our family to this show at the Forum in Los Angeles, and for some of them, it was their first Cirque show. The sad thing is, I don't know if my little nephews will want to see another Cirque show after this one. This is a touring cirque show, so I guess the reviews for this particular one are all going here. Anyways, this was the 23rd cirque show that I have seen... and I can tell you that it is not the best... I saw this show with my boyfriend at the Citizen Bank Arena in Ontario, CA on November 4, 2016. I was very happy about the free parking at this arena. Let me start off by saying that based on previous experience, generally speaking, the touring cirque shows performed in a tent are much better than the touring ones that perform in different arenas. Other touring ones I've seen performed in an arena were Corteo and Drallion... which did not impress much either, but much better still. This show was different from typical cirque shows. I already knew that it was based on Avatar, so I was very excited... however, I was not expecting to see a "live-action" version of the film to sum it up. This cirque show had very few of the typical acrobatics and stunts that are done. It was more of a play almost with minimal "cirque" acts incorporated into the show. The typical "wow" factor was not there. However, I must say that the stage overall, looked pretty neat and the stage effects were cool. I liked how the effects created different scenes... but that's about as impressive as the show became. It was mostly the 3 main characters running around trying to obtain 5 artifacts, and frankly, boring at times. I really wanted to like this show as I was estasic when I found out they would be doing an Avatar cirque show, so trust me when I've seen 23 different cirque du soleil shows. I do not want to talk in details about what happens during the show as they are still touring, and if you are like me, you would want to see the show for yourself. I would list this in the top 3 worse cirque shows that I have seen and included in that list would be Wintuk and the touring Michael Jackson Immortal one. This show encouraged phone use, unlike other cirque shows. Unfortunately, the incorporation of phones was just mare different color lights that flashed on your phone. Apparently, with the app, the phone is supposed to sync and contribute to the effects during the show. I found it more annoying. No flash photography, but there were many people taking pictures and some that even took pictures with flash. Therefore, it was not enforced well. Also, I think since they had an app and encouraged people to use it to add to the effects made it harder to enforce rules. I glad I saw this show because I'm an avid cirque du soleil fan and this show has been my 23rd to date... so regardless good or bad, I want to see them all for myself. This show is not a typical cirque show, it's more of a play and a cirque show, but see it for yourself if you must. Don't splurge on the tickets because it is not worth it. The only thing cool about the show was the special effects. The show was overall boring, and even me who loves the cirque du soleil was getting bored. Watch the movie instead and save yourself the money, otherwise if you really must see it, skip the expensive tickets and know that you are seeing a play rather than a cirque show! There were hardly any acrobats in the show.. I'm pretty sure I could have been in this show since the majority of the performers were just waving around flags and running around in costumes... First off, my many thanks to out to the Yelp community for giving my wife complementary tickets to this show. The seats and view were awesome, and the BB&T center is an excellent place to have a show. We have been to a few other Cirque de Soleil shows in the past and this one didn't disappoint either. To my, it seems that there was a certain naturistic theme going on and this show has an excellent mix of acrobatics, comedy and theater all wrapped up into one package. I don't want to give too much away if anyone reading this is planning to attend the show, but some of the acrobatics are simply jaw-dropping, and if you've been to a Cirque show, you know what I'm talking about! Some of the performers were doing flips 30 feet in the air, juggling balls and batons while listening to a symphony of music that blends everything perfectly together. The show was divided into two halves, each seperated by a twenty minute intermission. Just enough time for you to get up and stretch your legs for the next half! We were fortunate enough to sit next to some other amazing Yelpers that we could share the experience with and had a great time! Another beautiful, mesmerizing, emotional journey by Cirque du Soleil. This was my second live Cirque show and I absolutely loved it. The only thing I did not like is the stadium set up and the people I was seated next to, and the fact that the ushers allowed people to walk in and out of the show (as if it was just a movie theater) at any time. The stadium is the Panthers stadium, so I feel like the show did not reach its fullest potential here, although I can't speak for that entirely because I haven't seen the show anywhere else. The people next to us and behind us spoke loud enough for us to hear for most of the show, and there were people walking up and down the stairs and through the aisle (I had to stand up three times through the show). It just didn't seem like the ushers did the best job here. I was also a little sad to see that there was no "real" gift shop. They had a little booth of goodies after the show, but nothing was worth buying in my opinion. At other shows, they have more souvenirs that looked like they were worth buying. Spectacular visual imagery is dampened by a storyline that is more fitting of a video game than a theatrical experience. The greatest moments are ones of simplicity where the audience is allowed to focus on the performers and the performers are allowed to showcase their talents. Often, however, there's just too much going on. From the cell phone notifications encouraging audience members to hold up their LED screens to become "part of the show", to sections of the show where performers are literally running, jumping, and scrambling all over the stage, when the music and story swell in dramatic moments, I was left feeling flat and observant rather than inspired and engaged. It's a shame really. The talent is clearly world-class, but I personally felt that the overall experience lacked that emotional spark that I've seen Cirque bring to game in the past. read more

My partner has always wanted to see a CDS performance, always missing out, always hoping to catch the next one. I got the tickets as a gift for her and she was super excited, I couldn't believe how well I'd done. It was rubbish. She's trying to hide her disappointment. I feel embarrassed I took her to such a s*it show. Lots of running in circles to drum beats, very little impressive feats. The highlight seemed to be that you could download an app on your phone that'd flash lights and make noises in line with the show. We've had more enjoyment out of our run-down local theatre. This was my 5th Cirque experience, following Saltimbanco, Alegria, Dralion and Varekai and I wasn't disappointed. No, the show didn't feature the usual plethora of familiar individual acts such as trapeze, contortionists, high-wire, juggling etc, but the sheer spectacle of the whole show more than made up for it. My friend who accompanied me (her first CDS show) was awestruck from start to finish. The show has received a good few negative reviews, mainly dealing with the disappointment of CDS's straying from the usual formula, but information and video clips about the show have been out for some time and a quick check would have given anyone a chance to decide if the show was for them. The information was there.That's what I did and was happy with my decision. My partner has just watched the DVD and is deeply regretting that she couldn't make the actual show. This show was such a disappointment! I went to see it in Berlin this past weekend. I'm a big fan of Cirque du Soleil and have seen most of their permanent and travelling shows, so I was really looking forward to seeing this production. Sadly almost no circus acts in the show...just pretty puppets and light projections. Music was pre recorded and dull so this left the audience feeling flat. The word 'cirque' in the title is misleading and disappoints fans. I'm very disappointed that Cirque put their name on this show. We left just after intermission because of how bored we were. I have seen Cirque about 6 times before but this one was terrible. There was really no acrobatics at all. I felt like the actors were pretty much running around in circles and waving flags the entire show. There was an occasion no joke when three of the avatars laid down on the side of the stage and stayed there for 25 minutes. It must have been nice to take a nap in the middle of a Cirque show. I wouldn't normally write a review of a Cirque show but, after witnessing this travesty last night in Philadelphia, I feel compelled to let people know what lies ahead. 1. Being an avid fan of the movie, Avatar, and having seen several Cirque shows over the years, I was ready to be blown away. I was surely disappointed. As many of us know, Cirque is never mainly about a story. At the forefront, it's about the amazing physical feats and flexibility, leaving us wonder how people can do that. Any story usually takes a back seat to the performances. In this production, however, they attempted to make the story the focal point and, without being able to understand any of the Na'vi language spoken (and no subtitles) I was completely lost. The narrator was our only guide to understanding a remote portion of the story and he lacked the Na'vi-English accent that the characters had in the film so it was not believable. 2. Although the projection technology on the set was amazing and quite effective at times, the props and set pieces were of terrible quality. We felt like we were at an inexpensive play at a local theater company. The 'animals' were laughable (just watch for the horses), the plants were fabric, and the costumes looked homemade. Nothing had that glossy, bioluminescent quality of the film. 3. If you're looking for the typical Cirque performances, you won't find them here. A majority of the action was running, jumping, crawling, falling, flipping, grunting, growling, and faux fighting. The only act to actually feature strength and balance was the see-saw. For me, the saving grace of the entire production was the female singer. Kudos to her; her voice was flawless, raspy, and gave me goosebumps; the star of the show in my opinion. She was able to pull off the ethnomusicological singing that was featured in the film. Overall, I would not recommend this show. It was one of those times where you're wishing the show would just be over! Sad to say we left at intermission:/ what a waste of nearly $300! I should've read these reviews before I excitedly shelled out over $300 for 2 tickets. I have been to 3 other shows (2 in Santa Monica, 1 in Vegas). Even the shows in the dinky tents in the pier parking lot were WAAAY more impressive. My perception was that this show tried to adapt Cirque du Soleil's more free form format into almost a play. It did not work. There was a lot of dialogue, much of it inaudible. The App thing was mildly interesting (I won't spoil it), but would've been more thrilling if not announced about 50 times before the "reveal". Most of the sets were up to par and I enjoyed them. However the "action" scenes mostly took place on a netted bridge and a Puppet-like bird??? It was a lot of running and shouting. Saw this last night. I have to say i was quite bored and found myself looking around the audience to keep myself from falling asleep. VERY limited acrobatic display. the performers spent more time jumping around and looking lost then anything else. Granted this performance was more story driven but if they wanted to go this route (i don't why they would? im paying to see come crazy death defying flips and balancing!) they should have at least made the story in ENGLISH and not Toruk language! I had no idea what was going on or what! Near the end of the show i kept telling myself, " Yes, Yes hurry up and save the tree so we can go home!" lol read more

This show takes CDS' reputation and flushes it down a toilet set in Pandora. The show has a narrator who would not stop talking! There is so much talking and explaining of the story plot, that you're continuously waiting to see special stunts or acrobatics. Actually, I can say there were no acrobatics which is what CDS is known for... I felt like I was watching that episode of the Office where Michael and Dwight are practicing parkour... except Toruk was not funny. Even the kids in front of our row were falling asleep half way through the show. I'm very surpirsed that Cameron or any CDS creative director would give the green light on this. My husband and I saw Toruk months ago, but I felt the need to warn others about this show. We saw the show in Virginia. Don't get me wrong, Toruk wasn't BAD, it just wasn't good either. My husband and I had seen Amaluna a couple years ago and absolutely LOVED it. It made us want to see every Cirque show that we could. Obviously, when we found out that Toruk was coming to our area, we were more than excited to see it. This show is full of amazing effects and all of the props and costumes were incredible, but the stunts were lacking.After we left, my husband and I both said that we were sitting there waiting for them to do something cool, but they didn't. In fact, at intermission, we both contemplated leaving because we were very disappointed. We went to the show thinking that we would see the amazing stunts and acrobatics that we saw in Amaluna, and we didn't. We drove 2 hours to get there and on the way home we got stuck in traffic, so it took us over 3 hours to get home. We both agreed that the money, time and effort were not worth the show. This is a good show if you don't have expectations of seeing a lot of stunts and acrobatics. This could also be good for kids, especially if they have seen Avatar. Otherwise, don't bother. read more
