Citadel brings an interesting mix of small theater with professional acting, limited staging but clever design, and very close seating all-together-in-one. On my visit to watch Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, I was a bit surprised by the quality of the production I saw given the low price of the tickets. This overall was a small, but well run operation. Tickets were easy to purchase and receive at the will-call. The hallway was full of banners of past and future productions, and the playbill was designed nicely. The show started a bit late, but seating was orderly and the pace of the show was good -- with very quick set changes. The actors were skilled in both dancing and singing. Though the choreography was not extremely challenging, they made very good use of the space available and told the story well through the distinctly different characters they portrayed. The singing was very good here -- where the mix of the voices was done well. Even with minimal amplification, I never felt that the leads were overpowered by the chorus. The small theater allowed me to hear the harmonies very well, which were sung loud and clear by the ensemble. I was pleased at the effort taken to ensure that the different characters also had distinctly different vocal mannerisms and tones. Overall, this was an enjoyable experience. The small setting is used to its maximum potential, allowing for a great view of the entire show instead of limiting the quality of the show. The quality of the actors is good and the price is very reasonable. Worth a visit if you live in the area.

A sweet burb setup close to home that I just stumbled on. A laid back theater space situated in a school. Seats can be tight in a full house. Attended a production of Elemeno Pea recently. The cast did a good job with the production. Getting there is easy and the prices are affordable. Treat yourself and support the arts at the same time.

In today's society, things that are broken are often discarded and thrown away…read more I attended a kintsugi workshop at The Art Center Highland Park. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage. Kintsugi treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object. The broken pieces are mended together then painted with gold, silver or platinum paint. The result is that the broken piece is now transformed and by highlighting the flaws and accepting the imperfections, this is now a completely different and beautiful object. Our workshop was taught by Takahashi, Mami, a skilled teacher from Tokyo (by Ghibli Museum she told us). All materials were provided, even the broken pottery (an advanced student brought their own broken vase). The upstairs studio was open, well-ventilated and set up with all materials laid out in an orderly fashion. I appreciated the knowledge and experience that our teacher had, as a skilled working apprentice under a Grand kintsugi Master. She walked around, demonstrating and providing hands-on instruction. As a philosophy, kintsugi is similar to wabi-sabi, an embracing of the flawed or imperfect. Maybe I can incorporate a bit of this practice myself, and accept flaws or imperfections rather than deeming something less than perfect and thus must be discarded. I've taken classes here before and attended gallery showings. This is a close location to downtown HP, has a parking lot and street parking.

I stopped a young man who was a student and he explained exactly turn by turn how to get to the Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse which houses the rink. He was a shining example of the type of friendly, respectful and well spoken student one would hope to find here. The ice rink was state of the art and spectator seats were comfortable chairs and not the usual bleacher style seating. It was a comfortable temperature inside as well.

The coach is also the athletic director so his behavior can affect multiple sports. We filed a complaint with the school administration including the new college president regarding this matter, but not sure if anything will be done to address the issue as the president did not want to be directly involved despite our multiple attempts. Another administrator who is very professional reached out and assured that necessary steps will be taken to improve the athlete experience. I sure hope improvements will be made as Lake Forest otherwise is a good school with friendly and caring professors. The team/class/roommates were also friendly.

Then the realization hit that we would be stuck at home for weeks (maybe even months...fingers crossed not the case) local businesses got creative. Since then I've been a bit overwhelmed with my kids virtual schedules and would do anything to drop off one of my kids somewhere...and even drive a carpool. Some virtual classes have been better than others. Yesterday we had a music teacher (not at Rootz) send out the wrong zoom passcode and teach the entire class without realizing any kids were on there. But today we had my one of son's favorite classes, Super Hero Boot Camp, here at Rootz take place on zoom and it was the best virtual class I saw yet. Mr. David was well prepared by sending us parents some worksheets (scavenger hunt and coloring page) ahead of time. He had a fun superhero background on zoom and engaged the kids for 40 minutes with super hero activities. Since they are so young it did require a parent to be present and think my husband had so much fun that I may have to sign him up for the class in the future. Are 43 year olds allowed? My son did get distracted a few times, which probably also happens in class, but overall he had so much fun. While he wishes he could see all his fellow superheroes in person, this is a great plan b.
