    Sausage Breakfast Burrito Avocado Smoothie
    Jules K.

City Cup has been around for over a decade and managed to press on after covid so I wanted to support snd give it a try. I used to come years ago when I was in the office but it has been over 5 years. Now we are back to the office and in need of good eats. I am on a mission for a bomb ass breakfast burrito and go to smoothie. I ordered a sausage breakfast burrito ($10.95) and avocado smoothie and it came to just under $17. The smoothie was ok, not great. I honestly couldn't taste any avocado but I drank it anyway. The burrito was piping hot. It was ok as well. Instead of potatoes hashbrowns would be a great addition and to be grilled would be everything! Also, it needs a sauce on the side, no sauce is a crime. The search continues. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either but I gave it a try.

Inside the chorizo breakfast burrito. Lots of good flavors going on.

With inflation piling on to our already-high Bay Area prices, it's a good time to be looking for bargains. I thought I'd start with breakfast; after all, it's the most important meal of the day! Perusing my Uber Eats delivery options (that were not McDonald's), I settled on City Cup and Coffee in Oakland. I used to live near the place but never got around to trying it. So here goes ... Items ordered: - Chorizo breakfast burrito $10.95 - 2-item breakfast bar sandwich of egg, turkey sausage on an English muffin $5.50 - Green Goddess green juice $4.95 - Avocado smoothie $4.95 - Via UberEats Burrito 5/5: Decent size with really tasty chorizo, eggs, salsa, potatoes. I would definitely order this again. Breakfast sandwich 3/5: This wasn't nearly as good. In fact, I'd go as far as to say it was bland. However, it may have been my selection of fillings, and there are other fillings to choose from. But the price is decent for the area. Green Goddess 5/5 good price and taste Avocado smoothie 5/5 good price and taste All in all, pretty great breakfast burritos and prices for your most important meal of the day!

If you want some REAL coffee that tastes like coffee and isn't syrupy, give City Cup a try. This is a small business owned by very kind people. Each time I go, I get a breakfast sandwich with turkey, eggs, and cheese on a croissant and a hazelnut latte with almond milk. It's great to see small business stay on top and the people who work here have good customer service and take their time with your order.

    Everything bagel with cream cheese

We've come here a few times now since the pandemic started. We a cup of coffee, pastry, and most likely an everything bagel with cream cheese. According to my partner, the coffee there is just about average. There is no special taste to it and he has no problems with it. Doesn't seem like any special beans are used. The everything bagel is great - it's always perfectly toasted and has just the right amount of spices on it. The restaurant is clearly marked with tape so that customers stay 6 feet apart, but the place is still a bit on the smaller side when it gets busy, seemingly crowding out at around 6 guests.

Chicken Tikka panini with a smoothie

Whether you work or live in the area, City Cup is always a decent and affordable option. A typical breakfast/lunch cafe offering coffee, breakfast sandwiches, premade baked goods, lunch sandwiches, salads, smoothies, and a bunch of snacks. With Paris Baguette closed, for those of us on the western edge of downtown, this is now our closest coffee shop, and the coffee is decent enough. There are better options if you're willing to walk a few more blocks, but if you just need a cup it's easy to walk in and out. And I'll grab a premade baked good as well. Likewise, I will stop in about once a month for their sandwiches. Their paninis are actually worth it - affordable and filling. I've had the chicken tikka and the pastrami, and both are tasty, hot, and gooey. Make sure you have some napkins. Their other sandwiches are fine, I'm just partial to other spots in the neighborhood. Ultimately, if you live or work in the area, I do recommend City Cup. It's not going to be top of my list in any category, but if looking for something quick and affordable, it checks those boxes and that's its niche.

I pedaled my bike over there this Wednesday morning, aiming to secure a proper breakfast that would actually carry me past 11 a.m. The shop is cozy, definitely on the smaller side with a few seats inside, giving it that familiar, neighborhood spot feel. It's not a sprawling, antiseptic café, and I appreciate that. I ordered the Laney Breakfast Sandwich, which features egg, fresh spinach, sliced turkey, and Swiss cheese on a toasted English muffin. What impressed me was the intentionality--this wasn't something sitting under a heat lamp, looking defeated. It was clearly made to order. The egg was seasoned right, the turkey wasn't flimsy, and the spinach added that necessary fresh bite. It was a damn good sandwich, simple as that. I paired that with the Berry Lovers Smoothie. The original recipe calls for banana, but I asked if they could swap that out for mango. My people know that mango adds a different kind of sunshine, and they executed the substitution flawlessly. It came out thick, perfectly blended--a rich mix of blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and that mango kick. It was super refreshing and didn't taste like I was drinking melted ice. The service was quick and friendly, which is key on a weekday morning. Everything tasted clean, fresh, and intentionally prepared. If you're looking for high-quality breakfast fare that feels less commercial and more like something someone actually cares about, stop by. The short bike ride and the intimate seating are worth it for what comes out of that kitchen. They earned this review.

Our orders were taken and we sat down to wait. There were a TON OF FLIES buzzing around and I kept having to wave them off especially when we got our order to the table, which honestly was gross. We were called to pick up our order, but only 1 of the 4 items was ready: Zadie's Masterpiece Breakfast Sando - Really tasty and enjoyed the biscuit it was on. Skimpy on the bacon, there was ONE piece but overall good breakfast sandwich. Next item ready 5 minutes later: Khadija's Slow Burn Harissa Hot Honey Breakfast Burrito - Really tasty. Definitely flavor packed and would order this again. *BUT there was an issue. Apparently the person that ordered before us asked for the same burrito to go...they NEVER got it and yet our order was ready. The person was pretty cool about it but they were definitely annoyed and gave us a look although it wasn't our fault. *The ordering system seems unorganized with the cashier writing orders on a slip of receipt paper and putting them on a stand by the kitchen. I wonder if the slips were out of order or fell and they skipped this persons to go order? IDK but they need a better system! We tried waiting for our coffees before starting to eat but then our food started getting cold...YOU KNOW WHY?... because the poor person that was taking orders was also in charge of making drinks. Having one person as cashier and barrista is NOT a good idea on a busy Saturday morning. It was hard for them to take a moment and focus on the drinks becuase people kept coming in an placing orders which means we waited for 20+ minutes before getting our drinks. By then our food was mostly eaten! Thankfully we noticed they had a water pitcher for free water which was a saving grace! The wait for drinks was so long that people that were already sitting when we arrived and had already eaten their food were JUST getting their drinks before us. HORRIBLE! I felt really bad for the cashier/barista :( Another turn off, there is no understanding on what to do with dirty dishes. Do we bus our table? If so where do we put it? We noticed people leaving plates by the water pitcher and cups, some put them on the long counter by the coffee area. There wasn't a garbage or compost bin, so we weren't sure where to put food scraps. There was a bin for "Plastic Only" but only the cup lids were plastic and the cup itself was paper, so where TF do you put that? We noticed a black plastic bin that someone had brought out from the back, so we placed our stuff in there but wasn't exactly sure. We tried to ask the cashier/barista but they were slammed with customers so we ccouldn't get their attention. IDK the place is just poorly organized and messy! There are tables for people to make artwork which is nice but on a busy Saturday it might have been nice to clean those areas up to allow people to sit. Sorry guys... *You need a dedicated barista! People waiting 20+ minutes for drinks is insane especially when the food comes out relatively fast. *Please clean up your restaurant. The amount of flies was gross and no one wants to swat them away from food & drinks. *Tell people if they should bus their own tables and if so.... *Make it clear where to leave plates, cups, garbage, compost etc.
