The croissants are okay; we've had worse, but we have also had better. They are somewhat tough and chewy. The almond croissant has only a few actual almonds. They were very kind to fix my tea with hot milk and a little honey. My husband's triple-shot latte is fine. The ambiance needs work. It would have been nice to sit in peace without the radio playing in our ears. The shop would also be prettierand quieter without the drink machines, but I guess they simply don't have the space for those to go elsewhere. read more

Meet the Owner of City Cup & Coffee: - Even though it was 3 months, the owner has always had time for me. I have seen him drive hours from 3 Am to ensure his employees don't have to, and close. --he's the real deal. He's not just running a business; he's holding up a dream and a community. Through rising supply costs, credit card issues, even folks walking away because they can't pay cash--he's tried to the best of his ability to keep prices the same, kept his employees on payroll, and stayed grounded in service. That's rare. That's heart. The Product - Coffee & Many Others: - The coffee? Do you want a frappuchino? If not then this is as good as it gets. I usually go for a large coffee red eye, and it comes to less than 3 dollars, and it's never disappointed. The pastries hit the spot, the playlists are on point, and the space has this warm Oakland soul--nothing polished or performative. Just honest good vibes and better conversations. I ordered my breakfast sandwich with egg, cheese, and chicken apple sausage on a croissant. The order got to my house very quickly it was still really hot. It tasted fresh and it was absolutely delicious. Completely satisfied my craving for a breakfast sandwich and hot chocolate. Enjoy! read more

City Cup has been around for over a decade and managed to press on after covid so I wanted to support snd give it a try. I used to come years ago when I was in the office but it has been over 5 years. Now we are back to the office and in need of good eats. I am on a mission for a bomb ass breakfast burrito and go to smoothie. I ordered a sausage breakfast burrito ($10.95) and avocado smoothie and it came to just under $17. The smoothie was ok, not great. I honestly couldn't taste any avocado but I drank it anyway. The burrito was piping hot. It was ok as well. Instead of potatoes hashbrowns would be a great addition and to be grilled would be everything! Also, it needs a sauce on the side, no sauce is a crime. The search continues. This place is conveniently located to the federal building and garage. For more affordable options at the Oakland's City Center, you can't go wrong here. They open super early (I was told 530 am!) with palatable options when it comes to the cost of their coffee and tea (ranging between $2 - $5). They also have bakery options in the morning like muffins, bagels, yogurt, breakfast burritoes, etc. Lunch is also a good selection with ready-made meals or sandwiches. The cutest coffee shop. It feels like home walking in there. The owners and staff are so welcoming and friendly. We go for the lunch sandwiches and breakfast burritos! Even the smoothies are amazing and very filling. You could totally sit and eat if you wanted to or take to go. Everything is quick never a long wait. I live extremely close and would gladly have their food on the weekends but they are only open Monday-Friday during the busy business hours which I totally understand. Items ordered: - Chorizo breakfast burrito $10.95 - 2-item breakfast bar sandwich of egg, turkey sausage on an English muffin $5.50 - Green Goddess green juice $4.95 - Avocado smoothie $4.95 - Via UberEats Burrito 5/5: Decent size with really tasty chorizo, eggs, salsa, potatoes. I would definitely order this again. Breakfast sandwich 3/5: This wasn't nearly as good. In fact, I'd go as far as to say it was bland. However, it may have been my selection of fillings, and there are other fillings to choose from. But the price is decent for the area. Very nice place with great customer service! The portions are a nice size, and the food is ok. However, I didn't like that the staff weren't wearing gloves. It's 2025 -- with everything going on, hair nets and gloves should be mandatory in the food industry. Cute little low key coffee shop that also has a case with some fresh fruit, or deli type sandwiches. There are a couple of small tables inside but if it is nice outside I recommend sitting at one of the exterior tables since you get a dog parade and it is nice and shady in the courtyard. read more

If you want some REAL coffee that tastes like coffee and isn't syrupy, give City Cup a try. This is a small business owned by very kind people. Each time I go, I get a breakfast sandwich with turkey, eggs, and cheese on a croissant and a hazelnut latte with almond milk. We've come here a few times now since the pandemic started. We a cup of coffee, pastry, and most likely an everything bagel with cream cheese. According to my partner, the coffee there is just about average. There is no special taste to it and he has no problems with it. Doesn't seem like any special beans are used. The everything bagel is great - it's always perfectly toasted and has just the right amount of spices on it. The restaurant is clearly marked with tape so that customers stay 6 feet apart, but the place is still a bit on the smaller side when it gets busy, seemingly crowding out at around 6 guests. read more

I originally purchased a few items which included a bowl of fruit tightly wrapped in plastic however once I sat down after utilizing my entire break to purchase I noticed mold throughout the entire bowl. I called up to the location explaining that I didn't have the time to come back but instead had to use another break to resolve the issue but just wanted to tell them in advance to check out the remaining fruit left out for purchase. Once in the location I explained myself and attempted to show the representative the mold. He tried convincing me that it was just a bruised strawberry however it was actually patches of mold like fuzz throughout. I was offered either an exchange of the same fruit I still noticed in the exact same spot or a refund but solely for the amount of the item not the tax or transaction fee. I then asked if I could instead get a fruit smoothie which in turn I was charged not only the $1.50 difference but also their fee for utilizing my card that I already had been charged during the 1st transaction. I was brushed off when I stated that I should be given the smoothie for the same pricing as an inconvenience given that I would not have had to purchase had my initial service been provided. There was no disrespectful behavior or attitude from either party however the customer service just was not where it should have been given the circumstance, inconvenience & time spent. read more

Whether you work or live in the area, City Cup is always a decent and affordable option. A typical breakfast/lunch cafe offering coffee, breakfast sandwiches, premade baked goods, lunch sandwiches, salads, smoothies, and a bunch of snacks. With Paris Baguette closed, for those of us on the western edge of downtown, this is now our closest coffee shop, and the coffee is decent enough. There are better options if you're willing to walk a few more blocks, but if you just need a cup it's easy to walk in and out. And I'll grab a premade baked good as well. Likewise, I will stop in about once a month for their sandwiches. Their paninis are actually worth it - affordable and filling. I've had the chicken tikka and the pastrami, and both are tasty, hot, and gooey. Make sure you have some napkins. Their other sandwiches are fine, I'm just partial to other spots in the neighborhood. Ultimately, if you live or work in the area, I do recommend City Cup. It's not going to be top of my list in any category, but if looking for something quick and affordable, it checks those boxes and that's its niche. read more

Definitely don't use your debit or credit card here... I like the pecan bars here but from now on I'll only be paying in cash. Someone "adjusted" the total on our transaction and though it was small, it was enough for my bank to notify me and raise concerns. Whoever did it, did it as if i left a tip, but i only tip in cash, and i know for a fact that i did not tip on my card. If you are in the area - come here! My boyfriend and I are going to miss this little shop. This was our go-to for about a year now since we lived just across the street. The bagels/breakfast sandwiches are so good and their paninis are fire! I can't tell you how many times we skipped our meal prep just to get the panini and a coffee. And don't get me started on Sam and his staff - everyone is SO sweet and welcoming, and the food/coffee is always done in under a 3-5 minutes. I highly recommend this place! Been here soooo many times and the food is really good, the owner and staff are cool, but they need help cooking and preparing hot foods. Over the last few years there is one cook that is extra slow with all orders...my coworker just ordered an omlette 20 min ahead knowing how slow the cook is...we got there and they rang her up for her order, but gave her a completely different order (thankfully she looked at the food first), she got her omlette 4 minutes later....it seems they don't make food in the order it was ordered and simple items like hash browns take forever. Again good food, but if your breaks and lunches aren't long be prepared to wait unless you order well ahead (then run the risk it will be made quickly and sit there) This is one place, but feels like two separate places with the front of the establishment serving certain items and the back half serving different items...sometimes early in the morning there is no one in the back where they serve actual food versus the front half that serves coffee, drinks, Danishes, and fruit. The back half serves a lot of different items from burgers, nachos, and kabobs. They only have one cook as mentioned above, it's been about 2 years and I think they need to add more help in the kitchen. Good food, but I don't have time to wait anymore so I haven't personally eaten here in quite some time now. Great staff, but slow service when it comes to food preparation. The bagel was soooo thick and soft with the creamiest cream cheese in this lifetime! Smoothie, complimented the breakfast bagel very well. I've been regularly going to this cafe for their salads. The ingredients have been fresh and the salads have been consistently good. The cafe allows you to customize your salad using any of the salad ingredients. Their salad prices are competitive and a great value compared to a lot of places in the area. This shop was close to where I was staying in Oakland recently. When I walked in, the staff was all business and didn't really tolerate my inclination to read the menu. When I said I needed a few minutes, staff immediately disappeared, clearly perturbed with me. I ordered a bagel sandwich that was quite good. In Seattle, I get my bagel sandwiches in my building and they're excellent (but expensive). This bagel sandwich was better and less expensive. The quality of the bagel was clear. Toasted crisp with a tender inside, covered with cheese on the outside. The eggs, bacon, and sausage were cooked well and seasoned perfectly. I promised my co-worker I would share my breakfast. A promise that I instantly regretted when I opened up the bagel to take a bite. I shared but I wasn't happy about it. Service was very quick and there was about 5-7 employees running around. I grabbed a Red Bull and very, very large rice crispy treat for the road and was on my way. The prices were reasonable and I felt like it was all worth it! read more

Their cheeseburger is usually the number one meal that my coworkers are jealous of or inspired to get one of their own when I bring it back, its caloric breeze wafting through our cubicles. 2 out of the 3 times I've ordered it, it has been amazing, although the last time it was a bit burnt :(. You get fries and a drink and all for under $6. Come on! I've seen their salads and am definitely tempted to get one next -- that or a philly cheese steak! It gets pretty crowded and busy during the lunch hour, but they seem to be on point with the line and production of orders.
