This was my first and last visit to this salon. I booked an appointment for my daughter under the impression that a curly haircut would be around $75. After two and a half hours, the total came out to $158. To be fair, Mel was wonderful--very attentive, entertaining, and made the experience enjoyable for my daughter. The playlist was great, and the overall vibe was welcoming. That said, I personally can't justify the price or the time spent for the haircut. If you don't mind investing that much money and time, this could be a great spot. But if you're looking for quality curly haircuts at a more reasonable price, there are plenty of other salons that won't run you close to $200. read more

Great place to come.... If you want to spend a hundred and fifty 22 hundred dollars or more on even just a basic trim and spend several hours getting even a basic styling done. Perhaps things don't always run this slow, but it took so long for me to get the basic trim and styling service that I had to leave with my hair wet and I looked like a drowned rat.... I definitely would not recommend this place to anyone who needs to manage their time or budget. They accommodated me last minute and perhaps they should not have.... If I had stayed for the drying I would have been in the salon for a total of at least two hours, probably a little more for this trim. The experience feels like a bad dream.I am still hoping to wake up from. I was charged $185 for the services I described, and was unable to make the obligation I had planned for after in time, so then I ost gas money driving out that way after. . The owner was rude and snarky, when I express my absolute dismay and shock at the pricing, and ask to be explained why it was so high and why I was charged an additional twenty dollars like on top of the master stylist quote of one sixty five I was charged $185 this basic trim, which took forever. Save yourself. Go to a regular salon and watch some YouTube videos about curly hair. This salon visit was one of the absolute worst ways to start my holiday season off. It was a rainy day and after 3 buses from Brooklyn to Staten Island I quickly noticed it was worth every minute of my commute. Obviously we live through new norms now which are to be followed in every establishment. Upon arriving you will have your temperature checked, hands sanitized and are not allowed to bring guest since there isn't a waiting area at this time. Seats and stations are also sanitized and cleanliness isn't a problem. Not many people are allowed a cut at the same time but it was nice to see many different curl patterns and the transformation of the before and after results. I had my hair cut by Melissa who has many years of experience in cutting curly hair. My hair needed a cut because after 7-9 months (I lost count) it was dry and needed its moisture back. Melissa asked what I wanted to do with my hair and after mentioning shaping she gave me advice and began her artwork. It's truly art. Jessica was my stylist who put in the perfect products in my hair to show the curl pattern and add moisture back. I was having a conversation with Jessica and forgot to ask which products she used but I did notice they carried Deva and NYC products. After drying, diffusing and a good shake, shake I was a new person. The results were fabulous. I walked out of the salon that same way Beyonce did in the beginning of her Crazy in Love video. WARNING: I'm very talky. So let me tell you about City CurL. I don't know haircuts from a hole in the wall. I just know that everyone has a better one than I have. I grew my hair out about 20 years ago and never actually got a haircut since. I loved the length, though I just had that triangular plinth-shape that was heavy and lifeless. I was tired of looking like Kim Thayil of Soundgarden. So years ago, the internet taught me that I needed a specialist. It also taught me that I was going to have to go into the city to find one. Another obstacle. After a while, though, an internet search showed me there were some curly specialists in Staten Island, and WHAT? A whole salon that's JUST for curlies? El Dorado had been found. I had Christmas coming up and I finally decided to take the plunge. I'm a trans woman, nothing special to look at, and the thought of walking into a salon where everyone is gorgeous felt frightening. (Yes, everyone in this salon is actually gorgeous.) I work very hard to just achieve the level of "Plain Jane," so yeah, glamorous women intimidate me. I should not have worried. There was not a smidgen of judgement or attitude from the moment I walked in the door. But, the visit actually starts before you walk in. Cara, the receptionist tells you how to do your hair the night before, and how to come in, you have to wash and detangle and air dry in advance, because they initially cut your hair dry. An assistant preps your head for the stylist. This was Jaye, who set up my head, in some manner, and then the stylist (Master Stylist Melissa H.) comes in for the dry cut. Jaye then did my wash and conditioning, and then back in the chair for the final... make-it-gorgeous part. I don't know what you call that. It's wizard stuff. I can't tell you how impressed I was with Melissa H. She asked for my uninformed opinion, and I can tell she took my fears and apprehensions to heart by the cut she gave me. The process was phenomenal. I could watch and see she constantly checked my head straight on, in the mirror, from different angles, and she wet the ends when needed, and snipped off about a jillion split ends, all carefully but efficiently. Because I wanted to be conservative with the cut, she basically kept a lot of length, but totally revitalized my curl, and the quality of my hair. She gave me a much better shape by chopping a lot of dead weight hair in the back that was pulling everybody down, but I didn't seem to actually lose much visible length. I tell you, they do magic here! I have not felt so beautiful in ages! Let me say this: When you look at the prices on the web site, they list a lot of a la carte items, and it looks like the cost can really add up fast. I got the "Master Stylist" cut, which INCLUDED the dry cut, the wash, the styling, the setting, and most importantly, the EDUCATION. They sell a lesson, without a cut, as a service, and I figured I needed to buy that, but they did not charge extra for it. I know it added a lot of chair time to my visit. They never make you feel rushed here. I swear, you can tell Melissa loves hair and making curly hair look good because she has SO much knowledge. I was way behind the curve, and she gave me a ton of real practical advice. She answered every one of my questions, told me what to use and not use, and taught me so much about my own head that I never realized. Every woman with curly hair needs this. I told her up front that money was tight for me right now, and she didn't push any extra services, or salon products, or anything to ruin my budget on me. I swear, the products they use there are phenomenal, (They used the NYC line almost exclusively) but that's a splurge for another day. In fact, Melissa clued me in to discounts and specials that I could take advantage of in the future, as time and budget permit. So, end of story, I think you will be happy if you make that call and get these women to fix your hair. Professional, kind, and knowledgeable, absolutely top notch stuff. read more

I can't say enough good things about my experience at City Curl Studio! I had been following them for a while on Instagram and by chance they had a last minute cancellation and I was able to snag it. I had a haircut appointment for my 6 year old daughter Friday April 2nd. Let me tell you, this is the best salon I have ever been to. Filled with the absolute nicest people. From the person on the phone who made my appointment, to the person who called me days later to update me on my appointment, to the front desk lady, to the two stylist that worked on my daughters hair. I called the last week or March to make an appointment, but the next available kids day wasn't until April 21st. Even so, the lady was able to accommodate my daughter for the very next week ( first week of April ) & I was so grateful!
