Every time I've been here, the receptionists have been extremely friendly and helpful. I honestly wish all staff everywhere were as kind and welcoming as the team working here! The eye doctors are also friendly, professional, and clearly knowledgeable. I really appreciate how both Dr. Stacy Taketa and Dr. Pam Chin take the time to explain things in detail, while making sure the information is easy to understand--even for someone without a medical background like myself lol ;) I've consistently been very happy with the care I've received! Dr. Chin is an angel and your eye exam will be superb. Dr. Chin will go out of her way to make sure you understand what she is explaining, and make sure that quality of care is top notch. She is everything and more to what I was hoping to find in an Optometrist. I felt as if my questions were answered and more, and didn't feel shorted in any way. Dr. Chin really goes out of her way to make you feel welcomed and informed of your Eye health. However, I have had a very difficult time with the front desk. From rescheduling my appointment without a call/notice, sudden lost of appointment time, demanding my social security number over the phone even when I provided my insurance information, and unwarranted rudeness from the start. They have a very limited selection of glasses that is quite expensive even with insurance and I felt like I had to fight for certain pricy glasses features to be taken off when I didn't ask for it. When I picked up my glasses, I felt like the adjustments that I wanted wasn't a priority. The lady helping me was rather taken by a baby carriage passing outside on the street. I am now left with uneven glasses that I will have to adjust on my own under hot water. read more

I get anxious at eye exams and have a vasovagal response which leads to fainting during some of the tests. The whole staff, including front desk, were so understanding and accommodating, and treated me with such kindness around my anxiety and navigating my needs. We have been visiting CEW for several years now, and each one of my kids and wife have gotten our glasses, exams and checkups here. The service has always been exceptional and we love the neighborhood, small business feel of the place and the Drs. Dr. Chin has been fantastic, and even when my son broke his glasses 3 times in the span of 18 months CEW replaced them and sent back broken ones to the manufacturer. Rebates for contacts are hard and City Eyeworks doesn't really help you out, so this review is more of tips/advice on what you do to get your (Alcon) rebate: So as far as eye doctors go, I'm a fan. Doctors are knowledgeable and staff are professional. But I'm 2 for 4 on claiming my contacts rebates, meaning I've been out a total of hundreds of dollars. Here's what you do: At the end of the appointment: 1. Ask for the rebate form. Take a picture of it because it has a unique code that you can't find online. 2. Ask the staff at front desk to email you ITEMIZED receipts of 1) the appointment and 2) the contacts purchase. After 2 days: 3. Check your email for the receipts you asked CEW to email you. In my experience, they actually follow through with requests like this ~50% of the time. 4. If they did not email you the receipt, EMAIL them with your specific request. Emailed requests are more likely to be responded to. DO NOT CALL WITH REQUESTS. They always say they'll take care of it by the end of the day, but done so ~1 of 5 times for me across the span of 3+ years. When you get your contacts: 5. Take a picture of the barcode. 6. Go handle the rebate online. The rebate must be handled within 60 days, so don't wait until the last minute. This is especially true if you need to ask CEW for info (e.g. rebate code or receipt), because while they have gotten that information for me same day, they also have not followed through with requests ~50% of the time for me (across the span of 3+ years). So again, doctors are really great and in-person interactions are very professional! But CEW leaves it up to you to figure out how rebates work. And it's not easy. It would be helpful if CEW staff could walk you through the rebate process (e.g. tell you to keep the rebate form, handle it in 60 days) and do a better job following through with requests for information (e.g. phone call asked for itemized receipt). read more

Took my son here for his first eye exam. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. He had such a fun first experience. He's super excited to get his first pair of glasses. The eye doctor was very thorough in explaining the procedure she was doing and making recommendations. They have a great selection of eye wear for both adults and kiddos. I booked an appointment in mid-October for this coming Monday November 23. The excellent reviews on Yelp led me to believe waiting over a month was worth it. When I first booked I wanted to confirm city eyeworks accepted my insurance. Tammy was unable to confirm but said she'd have their insurance person give me a call. As of last Friday I had heard nothing, so I gave them a call to check in. They apologized and said they'd have the insurance person call me ASAP... OK. Fast forward to today (a week later) still nothing. I call again. Get put on hold, then hung up on. I call back. They put me on hold again. I finally speak with Tammy who cannot figure out my insurance and cancels my appointment. Mind you they've had well over a month to get this worked out on their end. City eyeworks was listed as an accepted provider for met life insurance. They also have a large decal in their window advertising that they accept met life, yet Tammy the receptionist had never heard of it. I'm sure the doctor is great, but she needs to fire her front desk staff. So disappointing to wait so long and land right back in square one. I am a Seattle public schools teacher spending a significant amount of time on the computer right now while teaching virtually. Was really looking forward to a new prescription and being able to see again. read more

The people who fit the glasses have been warm and caring, and bent over backwards to help me when my glasses were bent in a ball-to-face incident. City Eyeworks is seriously the best! I really, really love these guys. Rather than feeling overwhelmed and lost by the brisk conveyer-belt vibe (an experience I've had at every other place I've been to), I felt seen (ha!) and supported during my eye exam. Dr. Taketa immediately put me at ease as she was incredibly kind, patient, and knowledgeable. The first pair of glasses I got through them (141! Noting that this was the first time that my eye insurance was actually enough to help cover nice frames) are by far my favorite ever (they weren't carrying the style at the time, but I intentionally ordered through them because of how fabulous my experience was), and I'm already gearing up to getting my second great pair from them soon! read more

I was disappointed by the service at City Eyeworks. I first picked out frames with a friend then went back another day for an eye exam. The optician set aside the frames I picked out. When I went back for my eye exam, the exam itself was quick, but I had to wait almost a half hour while the opticians looked for my frames. Finally, even though they said they had set them aside, they couldn't find them. The optician did remember the frames I chose, so I ordered them. The optician was hard to understand. She spoke very quickly and did not explain my options for glare-free lenses, UV protection, etc. very well. I was told that they would call me when the glasses were ready to pick up in 7-10 days. After 10 days, I still hadn't received a call from them so I called to ask when the glasses would be ready. The receptionist said there was some sort of problem at the warehouse and the glasses would be ready "soon." After another 10 days, I called and the glasses were finally ready. I went in to pick up the glasses today. I have sensitive eyes, so I needed saline solution to store my contacts. The optician did not have saline solution available in the front, so I had to wait about ten minutes for her to get saline solution from the doctor. I feel like sensitive eyes are probably a common enough issue that they should have saline solution readily available. I'm happy with my glasses so far, but getting them took way too long. read more

This was my first ever eye exam and Dr. Chin did a good job explaining procedures, things she looks for during an eye exam, and different eyewear options. I felt very comfortable with Dr. Chin and would return for future eye exams. City Eyeworks bills your insurance directly and is familiar with the University of Washington's GAIP plan under LifeWise, which is a bonus for me. They also offer discounts for students. My total out-of-pocket cost for an eye exam was $40. The only downside is that they have a limited selection of frames and they were quite expensive even with the student discount and my insurance. The assistance I received in selecting frames was also a little subpar. The staff member working with me made me feel a little rushed. I ended up not buying frames here for the reasons stated above. SUMMARY: Great eye doctor and affordable eye exam. Would not buy glasses here. read more

From the front desk, to the optician, ending with Dr. Taketa, the entire office is amazing and sets the gold standard for customer service and professionalism. After getting my glasses back after a quick one week turnaround following my exam, I found the prescription didn't quite meet my expectations for the correction to accommodate my near-sightedness. I sent an email to Dr. Taketa explaining my reservations and she called me back that same day and got me back in for a Rx recheck the next morning. During the 2nd exam, she took the time to more carefully reassess her initial findings to adjust my Rx, taking into consideration my concerns, and made a slight but noticeably improved change. I felt a little sheepish about coming in again to begin with, but she totally put me at ease and understood where I was coming from and didn't make me feel the slightest bit uncomfortable for having her perform another evaluation. Dr. Taketa acknowledged I had the right to feel satisfied with the Rx of my glasses; even more so since I paid out of pocket for them. She and the rest of the staff are very patient and willing to do whatever it takes to make sure you have a positive experience at their clinic. I would recommend them without hesitation for anyone's eye care needs! read more

My reading glasses broke and because my prescription was two years old I decided to be smart... "Walk-ins Welcome," said their sign. A bit before 11:00 I walked into their establishment and asked when I could have an eye examination. In less than a minute, she verified my insurance and responded with "We have an opening at 12:00," said the receptionist, and so I returned after a light lunch. Pam Chin, very personable, very efficient and precise, told me something that I did not know. "I'm going with Cerulean Cataracts," was her diagnosis. "How much have they grown?" I asked. Instead of saying "Your cataracts have grown to the point at which no responsible person would drive," she showed me, with varying lighting and lens magnifications what I could see and what a person with average eyesight sees. At my request, with my smart-phone, she captured some images of what she saw through her lens. Facilitating this experience for me drove home what thousands of words might not have conveyed. I asked Pam about treatment options. She provided an informative website URL for me, offered to write a letter to my primary caregiver for a surgical referral, and explained how noninvasive the procedure has now become. I expect to have at least one of these 10-minute procedures by the end of this month. Pam's social skills greatly compliment her skills as an optometrist; she did a great job of telling me something that many would find difficult to hear. read more

I'm disappointed. The staff wasn't rude, but when I questioned their $45 contact lens "fitting fee" that is paid separately from insurance, they were short. I made it clear at the front desk that I was only there to get a glasses prescription and that I would go somewhere else where they don't charge additionally to get a contact prescription. Dr. Chin was very kind and very direct - I like that in an optometrist, but they did not communicate my preference to her. The next thing I know, she's suggesting Daily Contacts and talking to me primarily about contacts. I intentionally brought the conversation back around to my glasses and let her know that I would not be purchasing them that day. To be fair, she gave me a 5-day set of Daily Contacts to try, so I received a "fitting" I suppose. So I paid $50 out of pocket. I basically paid for the trial lenses. What's the point of requiring an eye exam to get contacts and paying for vision insurance if it doesn't cover the required costs associated with getting them? I'm bothered enough with the miscommunication that I won't be back. And in all honesty, I wish they would give me my money back. Update : The staff at City Eye Works recognized my frustration and reached out to me via email with a solution. They offered a refund of the fitting fee, but in exchange, I would not receive an updated contact lens prescription. I chose to take the refund, as I have plenty of contacts and was very appreciative that they reached out. When I called to get the refund, they made it very easy and had noted my account. Truly, thank you. I'm very pleased with the customer service, but I'll likely find an office that is more upfront about their fees and services. read more

I lost my old pair of glasses recently and it was the push that finally got me to go and get a check up. And I gotta say, I'm glad I did! Now I have a new optometrist up in the Seattle area and I love it! The staff here is probably the best you'll find anywhere around. They're super friendly and make sure they talk you through anything you would need to know. Dr. Chin was super sweet and I felt 100% comfortable with the examination. Throughout the whole process we made small chitchat and got to know more about each other which made the whole experience less intimidating and very casual. She also let me know that the contact brand that I currently wear may go out of production soon and let me take home samples of the newer kind to see if those would work out for me. The glasses selection process with the staff was so comfortable I felt almost like I was trying on clothes at the mall with friends. They'd pick out frames that they thought I'd be interested in and made helpful suggestions and observations. Thank goodness, because I'm totally indecisive when it comes to what I "look good" in. As for billing, they give a discount on exams to students - amazing! Also, since I'm still a poor college student, my mom (who doesn't live in the area) was going to generously cover the cost. They had no problems with choosing whichever method was most convenient for us - invoice, over the phone, etc. So nice! I'm so glad I found this place! I have no doubt that my vision will be better and that my frames are gonna look rockin'! read more

City Eyeworks is a great place to get your eyes checked. Definitely. I felt like it was very thorough and explained everything. Great! For more transparency, however,  if you have GAIP Plan through UW, on the plan it says if you go to an eye doctor that is within network, should be a 10 dollar visit. However, City Eyeworks charged me $40. When you are a student that is a big shocker, and doesn't seem right (according to insurance plan coverage). I called City Eyeworks and they apologized, explained the reason, and said they will do their best to be more transparent.  I also called the insurance plan and they said prior to making appointments ask: Whats the contracted rate for the exam that was performed? This is confusing to me, but what you should do is, say something like when I leave the appointment and I have to make the payment will it be 10$. If they say no, and you care about saving your money, go or find another place to be seen by the eye doctor. Of course, City Eyeworks is an amazing eye doctor place, but I love to save money when it is possible, especially as a student. Does City Eyeworks do a fantastic job? Definitely! Do I need more transparency in the cost? Definitely. read more

City Eyeworks is amazing. Dr Chin and all of the staff made my visit really quick, easy, and informative! I hadn't had an eye exam in years, I was long due. I never realized how bad my prescription was until she showed me the difference in what I was currently prescribed and what my new one will be. I was blown away. They helped me pick out the perfect pair of glasses for my face (my old ones are so ugly and not hip at all). I was told it would take about 2 weeks for them to come back from the lab. But guess what? I received a call yesterday that they were ready for pickup: a whopping SIX DAYS later. Super fast! I will be going back for all of my eye care needs! read more

Love City Eyeworks. Both Dr Taketa and Dr Chin are great. They are both very patient and always take the time to explain step by step their procedures throughout your examination and findings. You never feel rushed when finding frames. The opticians there are always so helpful and patient too. The entire staff is friendly and kind. The office is located on a busy street but their is plenty of free parking in the garage located on the back side of the building. First and only eye doctors that I have been too. I had several good experiences here, and though I didn't find what I was looking for due to the pricing I would definitely recommend it to anyone for a few reasons: 1) they were the only ones in town who sold the brand Eco - a good brand made from recycled materials, they plant a tree for every one sold (all info from the very helpful staff members) 2) Very helpful staff members 3) If you do not have insurance they knock 10% off The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is they charge 275 for the basic Polycarbonate lens, much higher than many other places I've been, but they do it in a week... Also the minimum for any of their frames was $135 and it got much more from there, though from the looks of the frames they were worth the price. Anyway I was happy with both the selection and the customer service, and when I need more glasses I will definitely check in with them! read more

I saw Stacy Takeda at City Eyeworks, and I could not have been more pleased. She was very knowledgeable, very professional, very informative and thorough, and had a wonderful disposition. I was VERY reluctant to go to an optometrist due to a previous negative experience at a difference optometrist. Finally I had to go because I could hardly see my books any more so I dragged myself to Dr. Chin based on her high Yelp reviews - I am so glad I did. When I walked in I was instantly warmly (but not in that weird uncomfortable way) welcomed by Joshua. He had such a calm demeanor. He did various eye tests and explained everything along the way. He was meticulous about cleaning everything in front of me and answered every question I had in a kind and non-patronizing way. He also helped me to pick my frames after I saw Dr. Chin and he was very knowledgeable but didn't steer me toward any frames in particular. He also left me alone to pick my frames so I didn't feel uncomfortable or like I was with a saleman. Dr. Chin is my ideal optometrist. She told me everything I needed to know about my eyes and I felt like a stereotype when I was so thrilled about how much better I could see with the prescription she gave me. Went in for a routine eye exam. I've been having some vision problems and thought I might need glasses. I requested an appointment online and got a follow up email confirming the time and date, as well as some questions about my insurance. I traded a few emails with the receptionist and went in for my appointment already knowing what my insurance was going to cover and what to expect. She looked up everything for me and was amazing about it. Molly, the receptionist is probably the chillest receptionist I have ever met. She's friendly in a genuine way and really REALLY knows her way around insurance billing. Dr. Chin is really nice, and as another reviewer mentioned, not in a creepy or artificial way. She is REALLY quick with all the sensitive parts of the exam, which I appreciate. She is really direct and tells you exactly what you need to know. Within about 15 minutes she already had a verdict on what my issue was (slight astigmatism). She helped me pick out frames herself, giving me suggestions based on my face shape and skin tone. I didn't feel rushed, but I didn't feel like I was being left alone to flounder by myself either. The carry frames made by 141, and much like TOMS shoes, they give a pair of glasses to a low income child in the PNW for each pair of their frames that are purchased. I was also walked through the options (anti-reflective coating etc) and made aware of the advantages and costs of each option. I never felt pressured into anything. I put down a deposit on the glasses, and they should be ready by next week. Hurray! I really recommend Dr. Chin and the whole team at City Eyeworks to anyone who is new to the realm of vision correction. read more

Pamela was professional, friendly, thorough and knowledgable. She discussed the pros and cons of my needed Rx and the pros and cons of a further consult with an ophthamologist due to a finding on my exam. Her staff were friendly and the choices of glasses great for me and reasonably priced. They all chipped in on giving their opinion on frames i was considering which was fun. I used the online scheduling which was incredibly easy and was able to get seen quickly.The parking garage is a little tricky (on the back side of the building)to find but plenty of parking at 3pm. Overall as a health care provider myself i would high recommend this office and will definitely return! read more
